Rabindranath Tagore(7May1861-7August1941)sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali person having
wide ranging knowledge who reshaped hisregion's literature and music. He was
authorof Gitanjali . He became the first nonEuropean to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in1913. Tagore wrote poetry as an eight-year-old.His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and
essays spoke to topics political and personal. Hiscompositions were chosen by two nations asnational anthems: theRepublic of India's JanaGana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar
Bangla.
Tagore was born in the Jorasanko mansion in Calcutta,Indiaon 7th of may 1861,as son of Debendranath Tagore and SaradaDevi.Tagore Family patriachs were the Brahmo .His motherhad died in his early childhood and his father traveled widely.Tagore had three brothers & a sister who were Dwijendranath,Satyendranath,Jyotirindranat & Swarnakumari. In 1883 hemarried Mrinalini Devi.they had five children,two of whom diedin childhood. His family
Tagore largely avoided classroom schooling and preferred to roam here and there.Hisbrother Hemendranath tutored him. He learned drawing,anatomy,geography & history, literature, mathematics,Sanskrit,and English-his least favorite subject.His father tutored him History,Astronomy and Sanskrit. He briefly read law at University College London, but again left school. He opted instead for independent study.
Known mostly for his poetry, Tagore wrote novels, essays,
short stories, travelogues,dramas, and thousands of songs.
Tagore had started to write in his early age of 8.
His works are frequently noted for their rhythmic,optimistic
and lyrical nature. Tagore had early success as a writer in
his native Bengal.His poetry include Manasi,Sonar Tari,Gitanjali
etc.Tagore's major plays are Raja, Dakghar , Achalayatan
He is the author of several volumes of short stories and novels
like Gora,Ghare-Baire and Yogayog. Tagore also left
numerous drawings and paintings, and songs.
Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature for his work
Gitanjali in1913. Gitanjali is collection of 103 poems originaly
Written in bengali translated in english by himself.He translated
Gitanjali in1912.He was first Indian even first Asian to recive
a noble prize.
Tagore composed 2,230 songs and was a good painter. Tagore
influenced sitar maestro Vilayat Khan and sarodiyas Buddhadev
Dasgupta and AmjadAli Khan.In 1971, Amar Shonar Bangla
became the national anthem of Bangladesh.Jana Gana Mana
was written by him which was adopted in 1950 by the
Constituent Assembly of the Republic of India as its national
anthem.It was first sung in 1911 at a Calcutta session of the
Indian National Congress his painting
At sixty, Tagore took up drawing and painting; successful
exhibitions of his many works—which made a first
appearance in Paris.He was likely red-green color blind,
resulting in works that exhibited strange colour schemes.
Some of paintings were similar or related to his lyrics.
He founded a small experimental school at Shantiniketan,a place 150km from
Calcutta,in 1901,which later came to be known as the Vishwabharti University.
He attempt to make Santiniketan the connecting thread between India and the
world and a world center for the study of humanity somewhere beyond the
limits of nation and geography. Teaching was often done under trees. He
staffed the school, he contributed his Nobel Prize monies. In mornings he
taught classes; afternoons and evenings he wrote the students' textbooks. He
held events for fund for the school in Europe and the United States .
He died at the age of 80, on 7th of
August in 1941 at Calcutta,India
