The Classic Fleet assembles

From about 10:10am the Classic Fleet numbers grew. Trim had arrived from Sandringham. The Tum fleetpresence was noticable, 6 of them, all set to Race. Thesight of the day was to see Huia running hard to make thestart time, the Classic Fleet of 16 were ready to go.

Martini’s track around Race 6 Course 2

Gybe-O

Course 2 assigned for Race 6

To work in with the RMYS two handed race, Course 2 was assignedby the RMYS Race Director. Course 2 was to be a tight beat beatalong Beaconsfield Parade to the RMYS Mark G then a gybe run toMark F then a hard beat home into a 25 knot Northerly breeze. Noproblems said the Classic Fleet. This is what we’re here for. To besure though, the RMYS Rescue Boat William Paterson was all setto mother the fleet. The RYCV Rescue Boat Thorsen with RYCVRace Director David Leroy was also on the water with the ClassicFleet at short notice.

The on the button start.

On the button starts were seen by Mercedes III and Avian. A recallsignal went to Charlie Salter Sirocco who was on her way back tothe start for an all clear start after a forward recognoitor.

Across the Classic fleet, as the page one images shows, there were many Classics closly following these twofleet leaders. Avian and Sirocco kept pace with Trim while Serifa and Dingo were well up with the fleet.Frances and Marie Louise III worked hard to make the top mark in one tack.

Rounding the Top Mark.

Frances had to pinch to make the top mark. The cost to lose her cover on Mercedes III. Marie Louise IIIhad to give way to many starboard tackers such as Avian and Serifa while rounding Mark G. Cyan was notfar behind Marie Louise III.

On the gybe run

With the breeze building many classics opted for a pole out run. Several Tums and Serifa went for the kite. With the tight handicaps it’s racing decisions like these that make the difference with corrected time results.

Mercedes III crew did a headsail change on the run to prepare for the hard after mark rounding beat to thefinish line. Again another payoff with the corrected time results. Much too busy on Marie Louise III for thehandicapper to take note on what else was happening arouind the fleet on this run.

All across the fleet no drama gybes were being. One Classic, Akuna made the mark F with no gybes afterlots of heading up into the wind. Chris Havre knew Akuna was paying him back for all the work put intoher to allow this hard racing with no problems to happen.

The beat to the finish.

Watching the Tumlarens take on the 25 knot mild slop conditions was a sight. This was what they weredesigned for. Down at the front end Mercedes III with reduced sail for no leeway made the finish line inone tack to take out Race 6 line honors . Frances chased her hard. Starboard calls on this beat were frequentas the fleet as the Classic fleet tacked their way to the finish line. Close across the line battles such as thedead heat between Serifa and Sirocco and the Tumlarens Zephyr and Snow Goose finishing with 3seconds between were some of the across the fleet features of race 6.

Corrected time results

Below are the time of day across the finish line details and the corrected time placings. The corrected timeresults show how hard work or small mistakes affect placing. No doubt that handicapper of yours will bebusy once again to come up with adjustments to hopefully make the corrected time results tighter for Race 7

Line honors congratulations to the Mercedes III crew which was made up George Fischer and MichaelRhodes with some of their Boambillee crew plus Mercedes III regulars while Martin Ryan was racing at theCowes UK Classic Yacht regatta.

Congratulations go to Michael McTavish for his helming performance and his crew spinakker workperformance that bought Serifa home to be first on corrected time in the 25 knot conditions.

Congratulation go across the fleet for the way our fleet raced in the conditions that were at top of the limitfor Classic yacht racing

After race reports from allboats revealed another day ofgreat classic Yacht Racing. Aspecial report was receivedfrom Hui and how she handledthe conditions slowly but withno problems.

Next RaceRace 7 August 7 at HobsonsBay Yacht Club.

Panerai Cowes Classic Yacht UK Regatta

Attached is the latest and final report from Cowes UK by Mike Daddo.

The results performance from all three Classic skippered and crewed by CYAA/.CYANZ members indicatelots of hard work in between race work to bring these chartered boats up to being competive with local boatsand crews. Reports from Martin Ryan indicate to participation of the CYAA and CYANZ members has putClassic Yacht racing in austyralia and New Zealand on the international Classic Yacht racing map.

More will be heard of this when the many eventful Cowes Regatta stories are retold.

Conversations with Bob Munro.

To begin with there’s no such thing as aconversation with Bob, skipper of Tandanya. Youron the receiving end of another valuable historylesson.

Bob still kicking goals in his 89th year. He willadmit that working in drying kapok cages in theirmatress manufacturing business or filing lead fillerin thie car repair business of mixing blue asbestoswith epoxies in his boat building years may havecontributed to a bit of lung scaring.

Perhaps his many years of athletics competitionswhere he mixed with all the names of Australiannational and Olympic administration are stillpaying off.

Back to todays sailing. Discussion about the CowesRegatta results led Bob to recount how the topInternational 8 metre of the Regatta, Saskia, cameto Australia. A well known international companywanted to give aparting gift to their CEO. Afterfinding out the CEO’s dream gift, out came Saskiafrom the UK. How about that. Incidently the othertop International 8 metre at the Regatta was Erica J.Another peice of Austyralia Classic Yacht heritagegone.

Lot’s more stories from Bob. His mens shed is now in Abbottsford after departing from Munro’s corner atthe Victoria Market.

RGYS Festival of Sails, Date change.

Recently a note was received from the RGYC informing that FoS will begin with the Williamstown toGeelong passage race on Saturday 21st January.
