Years ago when I graduated fromcollege and got my first job one

of the first things that occurred to mewas ldquoI canrsquot wait to retirerdquo Nowhalfway to retirement I still envyretired cruisers who can explore theGreat Lakes with a flexible scheduleAfter all conventional wisdom amongsailors states that the best way toenjoy a sailing vacation is to throw outthe schedule and do what the weathertells you to do

There are few sailors who havenrsquotheard about the celebrated NorthChannel on the northern shore ofLake Huron The magazines that caterto our sport repeatedly include articleson the North Channel and boat showsoften have one or two people givingseminars about cruising thereUnfortunately the articles and semi-nars often describe cruises lastingthree weeks four weeks or more Tosomeone aching for the day when hecan sail for four weeks at a time thesearticles and seminars are entertaininginspiringhellipand frustrating The North

Channel is full of beautiful anchor-ages quaint marinas and quirkytowns It isnrsquot possible to see it all ona quick one-week vacation

But you donrsquot have to see it all atonce In one week you can sample the

highlights and have a pleasant vaca-tion On August 4 2006 my wife andI did the unthinkable With two guestson our Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 452ldquoPassepartoutrdquo we sailed from SisterBay WI and explored the NorthChannel mdash using only six vacationdays In this article yoursquoll learn howwe did it and yoursquoll see that althoughwe had to make some sacrifices wehad (and gave) a lovely 10-day vaca-tion

ldquoVacation moderdquo is that relaxedstate one reaches after long stretchesof leisure time The schedule ceases tobe important the daily inefficienciesthat creep into onersquos life stop beingsuch a big deal and my bitten-downfingernails start to grow back It takesme three days to get into vacationmode and it takes my wife Kimcloser to four

After a good nightrsquos sleep we ate breakfast and looked over the mistyglassy-smooth waters of The Pool Photo by Jason Beren

Inn We had just finished dinner andwere laughing and listening to a duetplaying the blues The innkeeperplayed the drums and a friend of hisfrom the Carolinas played guitar Wehad made it to the North Channel inthree days we were checked in withCanadian customs and now as prom-ised the pace was going to settledown to something resembling avacation Our only set-in-stone sched-ule was to have Passepartout in LittleCurrent by next Sunday

That night I also discovered myfavorite food Itrsquos spelled poutine butthe locals pronounce it as if itrsquosVladimirrsquos last name Itrsquos not a healthfood You start with crisp French friessmother them in gravy then meltmozzarella cheese over the top Imade it my mission that week to sam-ple poutine wherever it was served Igained ten pounds

Following the advice of the BeachBoys we had decided to get there fastand then take it slow so the first twodays are a bit of a blur We left Yacht

Works marina at 4 AM Friday andarrived at Beaver Island thirteen hourslater We had time for a quick walk

and a shower before dinner and afterdinner we went right to sleep OnSaturday we sailed to Mackinac

Island and it was the same story awalk a bar a restaurant and sleep Itwas a full dayrsquos sail to Meldrum Bayso we had to get up early Sundaymorning We were still in ldquodeliverymoderdquo

The schedule on Friday andSaturday was a sacrifice You see Ilike Beaver Island and MackinacIsland you could easily spend a fewdays in each place But we only had10 days so we pushed on

Monday morning we watched a40 Carver leave Meldrum Bay only toreturn an hour later It was blowing 30kt out of the northwest and the seaswere kicking up But the weather wasclear and we were headed east so offwe went for some of the best sailing ofmy life Seas were four to six feet andour beamy cruising boat with a yardsale of toys tied to the deck could stillsurf It was a fabulous five-hour sail tothe Gore Bay marina which was wellprotected We had a nice time kayak-ing around the anchorage and talkingwith other boaters The staff ofCanadian Yacht Charters based inGore Bay was particularly helpful insuggesting other North Channel desti-nations

Tuesday we anchored in the

Benjamin Islands group I spent theafternoon learning how to ldquoEskimorollrdquo my kayak It never worked and Iwas mainly rewarded with a lot ofswallowed lake water The BenjaminIslands however did offer us beauti-ful scenery and a chance to anchorNorth Channel style with one anchorout and another line to shore With ourdraft of 68 we typically donrsquot getthat close to shore

On Wednesday we sailed toKillarney and spent the night parkedat the Sportsmanrsquos Inn Then it hit meAlthough we had all made the transi-tion to vacation mode we were stillsailing from place-to-place every daynot taking the time to truly experienceeach destination Did we really needto leave Killarney I brought it upwith the crew and we agreed to stay inKillarney a second night

On an absolutely calm Saturday morning we motored down Baie Fine onour way to Little Current Photo by Jason Beren

Staying put was the right decisionnot in the least because I discoveredthe best poutine in the North Channelat Gateway Marine After Kim and Iwent on a short bike ride I inflated afloating mattress and lay on my backsipping a dark and stormy all after-noon That night we dined at theKillarney Mountain Lodge

The highlight of our trip almostdidnrsquot happen and it wouldnrsquot havehappened if Jason hadnrsquot brought ahand-held depth gauge We kept hear-ing that Baie Fine (pronounced BayFinn by the locals) and The Pool wereamazing places Baie Fine is a fjord-like bay that leads to a narrow channelwhich in-turn leads to The Pool abeautiful and remote anchorageAlthough Baie Fine itself is deep thechannel at its west end is only sevenfeet in places and the channel at itseast end which leads to The Pool ismarked with five-foot depths Jasonsurveyed the depths ahead with thedinghy and we crept over both shal-

low spots seeing a minimum depth of7 ft We had made it to The Pool

The Pool was extremely calm andthere were only two other boatsanchored there We kayaked hikedand swam in a crystal clear lake justnorth of The Pool Although the wholeNorth Channel was beautiful BaieFine and The Pool were exquisiteThis was a perfect finale for the trip

Saturday we headed to LittleCurrent our rendezvous point for thecrew change Crew change Thatrsquosright the aces up my sleeve that madesuch a short trip possible were JoldquoTorpedo Jordquo Reis and Tim Nolantwo extremely competent andabsolutely trustworthy friends of oursThey brought along a volunteer crewfrom the Hoofer Sailing Club inMadison WI

After looking at the cost and timeof other modes of transportation weall agreed that chartering a twin-engine plane was the best way to dothe crew change We hired Orion

Flight Services in Sturgeon Bay WIJo Tim and the Hoofers flew out ofCherryland Airport in Door CountyWI and into the Manitoulin EastMunicipal Airport After handshakesa boat briefing and well wishes weswitched places Erin Jason Kim andI flew home

It was just 10 days and we missedmany beautiful North Channel spotsbut we saw enough to know that wewill definitely return We experiencedsome fantastic sailing and brokePassepartoutrsquos speed record (114 kt)we met interesting people we sawamazing scenery and I discoveredPoutine Not a bad vacation at all

The Return Cruise When I ( Vickie Eiden) was invited tojoin the return crew for the NorthChannel trip I was thrilled for severalreasons 1) our crew of eight wascomprised of good friends includingseveral expert sailors 2) Irsquod neverbeen there and 3) therersquos a lot of

interesting history in the areahellipandIrsquom a museumaholic A perfect blendbut a lot to squeeze into seven dayswe enthusiastically jumped on boardknowing there would be compromisesbut that wersquod have a good time regard-less

I should mention that the out-bound and return cruises had ratherdifferent vacation styles Both groupshad fantastic weeks in the NorthChannel and visited several of thesame spots but with distinct vari-ances Firstly crew size the ReturnCrew had twice as many crewmem-bers which made for ldquofriendlierrdquoaccommodations but a highly socialatmosphere Secondly we anchoredout more allowing us a few morekayaking adventures and severalnights gazing up at the final dazzlingstreaks of the Perseid meteor showerThirdly we had four enthusiastic hob-byist chefs on board who enjoyed thechallenge and camaraderie of creatinggourmet feasts in a tiny floatingkitchen which also greatly pleasedthe remainder of the crew

The hidden message behind theseperks for those who are wont to bemore budget-conscious a brilliantvacation can still be had Our crew

was comprised of a number of indi-viduals who are currently paying foradvanced degrees starting new busi-ness ventures and buying homes Wespent less by anchoring out eating inand splitting our costs between eightpeople and our thriftiness rewarded

us with a very rich experienceindeed

The morning of Sunday August13 our crew met at the CherrylandAirport for a chartered flight toManitoulin Island the 10-seat air-plane gave us an aerial preview of thewaters we would enjoy for the nextweek During the cozy cab ride to theLittle Current Marina Irsquoll admit I felta twinge of longing as we sped pastthe Little Current-Howland Museumbut it was only Day One and therewould surely be more museums

The chatty crew change gave usthe opportunity to hear a first-handaccount of the highlights of theOutbound Crewrsquos week and get sev-eral recommendations then we in thequartet of chefs provisioned the boatAnother perk for the return voyagewas that the Outbound Crew hadthoughtfully abandoned a fair amountof rather nice ldquoleftoversrdquohellipincludinga few cases of Canadian beer Wespent our first night in the marina din-ing on chicken curry washed downwith bottles of Molson

Eagerly anticipating a bit ofdown time I had brought a book Irsquodbeen meaning to read for ages thetitle of Jules Vernersquos ldquoAround theWorld in Eighty Daysrdquo seemed tohold a challenge similar to that ofsailing through the North Channel inone week At the time I hadnrsquot real-ized that it contained our vesselrsquosnamesake Passpartout a characterwho had earned this name by his

ability to get himself out of tricky sit-uations I considered this a goodomen for our voyage

Monday we followed the windtowards Killarney Bay timing ourexodus with the opening of the his-toric Little Current Swing BridgeThe shorelines we passed were sim-ply exquisite in their natural formand my imagination took flight as Idaydreamed of early fur-traders nav-

igating these waters in canoes ridinglow under the weight of raw fur over200 years earlier I waved wistfullyas we motored past Killarney and thered fish and chips bus but Tim ourGreat Loop veteran had good reasonto be enthusiastic about proceedingto Covered Portage Cove A climbup the rocky cliffs revealed wildblueberries beautiful outcroppingsand a morbidly fascinating pile ofdried bear scat laden with pink cray-fish exoskeleton Back on board weuncorked a Shiraz and created ourldquoItalian nightrdquo dinner mdash spicy pastasauce over penne

We arose early Tuesday to beginour journey along the stunning fresh-water fjord that creates Baie FineAnchored in The Pool we hiked upto Topaz Lake for a swim Peeringdown into the bright clear water ofthis aptly-named lake the rock wallscradling it seem to drop into the cen-ter of the earthhellipfreaky but coolKayaking that evening we discovereda small waterfall and impressivebeaver dam in the stream connectingThe Pool to Artist Lake then sleptwell after a hearty dinner of mush-room-zucchini risotto and a few dicegames

Wednesday morning we cut theweed ball off our anchor and began

Keys to Success atDownwind Starts

There arenrsquot too many races thatstart downwind anymore but

when they do itrsquos good to know afew strategic and tactical moves

Most downwind starts are a lotlike upwind starts You want to beon the line near the favored endwith speed and clear air However

itrsquos harder to get a good startdownwind because if yoursquore in thefront row you often get bad airfrom the boats that are not Andsometimes itrsquos hard to rememberhow barging works when youapproach a starting mark on areach or run


One obvious difference is thatmost downwind starts involvespinnakers This places an addedpremium on preparation and crewwork Here are ideas about gettinga better start when the first leg is areach or run

Picking the lsquofavoredrsquo end At an upwind start the favored end is

the one thatrsquos farther upwind or on thehigher ladder rung At a downwind start(one where you canrsquot fetch the first mark)the favored end is the one thatrsquos moredownwind or on the lower ladder rung

To determine which end is moredownwind you can use the same tech-niques you use for finding the favored endat an upwind start In fact one easymethod is to pretend that you are startingto windward If you figure out which endwould be favored for an upwind start theother end will be favored for going down-wind

The real lsquofavoredrsquo end is the onewhere you will have a better start takinginto account many factors But often weuse this term to describe the end that isfarther to windward or at a downwindstart to leeward

Starting on a reachWhen you start the race on a reach

picking the favored end is usually a littlemore complicated Sometimes you canjust choose the end thatrsquos closer to the firstmark but this does not consider the factthat starting at opposite ends will give youdifferent sailing angles (and speeds)

If the wind is light or the first reach isbroad itrsquos often better to start at the lee-ward end so you have a higher and fasterangle of sail But if itrsquos windy and the firstreach is tight it may be better to start atthe windward end especially if you areoverpowered or if yoursquore having a hardtime holding a spinnaker

Another important factor is clear airOne good thing about starting at the wind-ward end is that you can usually avoidwind shadows That may not be so easy todo if you start closer to the leeward endunless your apparent wind is forward ofthe boats lined up to windward If yourmasthead fly is pointing at or just behindthose boats the leeward end may not be agreat place to start


bull If you have a choice of head-sails start racingwith your biggest one This might not be the perfectsail for going upwind in the existing conditions butyou donrsquot have to go upwind mdash yoursquore just lookingfor the best speed while reaching to the starting line

bull Since you wonrsquot be racing upwind set your jibleads outboard and forward so they are as effectiveas possible for reaching Ease the backstay outhauland cunningham to their offwind settings

bull Before the start make sure you sail the angle ofthe first leg with a spinnaker Spend enough time toget in the groove for the existing conditions beforeyou start the race Use this time to get a feel for theboat figure out your target speed and pre-set yourtopping lift height and vang tension

bull During the starting sequence try the followingapproach Go to the place where you want to startthen sail a port-tack beam reach for about a minuteTack and sail on a starboard tack beam reach foranother minute or so until you get back to your start-ing place Then tack again and repeat this Adjustyour timing so you end up on the starting line at thegun

By following this pattern you can practice yourfinal approach a few times maintain good speedthroughout the pre-start and avoid getting too faraway from the spot where you want to start

Ingredients for a good downwind startThe goals and tactics of starting downwind are not a lot different than starting upwind

except the mayhem is usually compounded with spinnakersFront row - You want to cross the line as soon as possible after the starting signal

However itrsquos harder to restart if you are OCS so you might want to be slightly conservativehere one strategy is to hold your spinnaker hoist until you are absolutely sure you will notbe early

Good speed - There is never a start when you donrsquot want to be going fast as you comeoff the line You can get extra speed at a downwind start by approaching on a beam reach andthen bearing off just before the gun so your VMG is higher than normal when you cross theline Ideally you would have your spinnaker flying while you do this Clear air is also key forspeed

Near lsquofavoredrsquo end - Survey the starting line figure out which end is better and try tostart somewhere near there For example if one end of the line is substantially farther down-wind you should probably start there

Able to sail the right direction - When picking a place to start another factor is yourstrategy for the first leg Which side of the run do you like Make sure you are able to sailthat way soon after the start

start (X) figure out how you can get therewith speed and a lane of clear air Manysailors approach a downwind starting line ona course thatrsquos roughly perpendicular to it(Approach A) My recommendation is toapproach the line on a tighter angle from adirection that is more nearly parallel to itthan perpendicular I like this Approach B forseveral reasons

1) You will have better speed when youcross the starting line A beam reach is yourfastest point of sail so approaching the lineon roughly this angle will give you your bestVMG when you bear off to cross the line

2) You are more likely to have the rightof way By approaching the line on a hotterangle you will be on the leeward side ofmost boats (including everyone usingApproach A) and therefore they will have tokeep clear of you

3) It will be easier to time your start soyou cross the line just after the gun If youtake Approach A you have the least possibleflexibility in adjusting your timing By mak-ing your approach roughly parallel to thestarting line (and a few boatlengths from it)you can luff your sails (or boat) to slow downand simply bear off when itrsquos time to start

Lane of clear air - The toughthing about upwind starts is that ifyoursquore in the third row off the line youalso have bad air But if yoursquore in theback row at a downwind start at leastyoursquore sure to have clear air Yourgoal however is to be in the frontrow with a good lane of clear air

Inside position - On a short runanother tactical factor at the startmight be setting up so you will beinside at the leeward mark If you willround the mark to port the boats onthe left side (looking downwind) mayhave an advantage

bull Approach B also makes it easier to usea line sight for gauging your position rela-tive to the starting line

bull Unless yoursquore starting on a port-tack reach you should almostalways approach a downwind starton starboard tack (jibe) so you havethe right of waybull Be careful about using Approach Anear the windward end of the line oryou may get caught barging

Researchers to Probe Decline inGreat Lakes Water Levels

Canada and the United States arelaunching a $175 million study

to determine why water levels in theupper Great Lakes have declined tonear-record lows

The study by the InternationalJoint commission will consider anumber of possible causes from cli-mate change to erosion caused bydredging in the St Clair River

Environment Minister RonaAmbrose announced $500000 forthe study last week But officials saythat is just the first instalment in whatwill be a major five-year researcheffort

Ambrose noted that water levelsin Georgian Bay together with LakesHuron and Michigan were as much as45 centimeters below average thissummer

ldquoClearly the health of thisecosystem has global significancerdquoshe told as news conference at ParrySound ldquoChange is already upon usrdquo

Huron and Michigan are at theirlowest levels since the 1960s andLake Superior is at its lowest since1926 reports the CanadianHydrology Service at BurlingtonOnt

The decline has caused problemsfor navigation recreation power

generation and the ecology of thearea Wetlands are drying up docksare stranded and beaches in someareas are overgrown with weeds

ldquoPeople that have lived along theshoreline and thought they have amillion-dollar property no longer dobecause instead of having a nicebeach or a nice rocky shoreline infront theyrsquove got muck with bulrush-es growing in itrdquo said Mary Muter ofthe Georgian Bay Association

Citing a study by BlairAssociates of Oakville Muter saidthe Lake Huron-Michigan waterlevel decreased by 24 cm between2000 and 2005 which she describedas a major drop

ldquoIf you converted half a centi-menter into volume of water yoursquodbe talking millions of gallons ofwaterrdquo

Yet the lower lakes Ontario andErie are at or slightly above normallevels which has scientists baffledNormally water levels throughoutthe lakes would rise and fall more or

less in tandemComputer models simulating cli-

mate change predict that water levelswill decline throughout the GreatLakes but donrsquot explain why theupper lakes would be affected morethan the others

ldquoThe real thing thatrsquos got every-body concerned is not only are LakeMichigan and Huron dropping buttheyrsquore dropping relative to Erierdquosaid Frank Quinn a hydrology con-sultant at Tecumseh NY

ldquoThe lakes have been low in thepast but the graphs show that all of asudden starting probably in the late1980s or early 1990s there came amajor difference in the water levels

On April 21 2006 a boater struckthe Ludington Harbor north

breakwater late at night The 47 year-old-male operator backed off therocks and motored to a nearby boatramp where the Ludington policearrested him for operating a boatunder the influence

The incident once again sparkeda lively response from the local mar-itime community regarding theLudington north breakwater lightMany claimed it is not bright enoughto alert boaters to the breakwater thatextends out into Lake MichiganSince 2004 the harbor has experi-enced nine breakwater collisions

The Ludington Daily News ran afront page article the followingMonday addressing the light issueBrian Mulherin who wrote the arti-cle requested my input on the matter

I told him itrsquos not the light butheedless boaters approaching the har-bor at unsafe speeds that lead tobreakwater collisions Since 1997 Iknow of 58 breakwater collisionsalong Lake Michiganrsquos eastern shorebetween Frankfort Michigan andChicago Nearly all of the collisionsinvolved harbor systems with break-waters that reach well out into LakeMichigan with lighted navigationaids standing at the end of the break-water

Some lights are green some arewhite and some are red Whetherbright or dim they can be difficult tosee against background lights onshore I know firsthand because Ihave made port at night in many ofthese harbors and always with thethrottles at clutch speed I canrsquot fath-om racing towards a harbor at night

or why anyone else would Yet all 58breakwater collisions involvedexcessive speed for the prevailingcircumstancesmdashin particular back-ground lights on shore

You would assume that boatersexperiencing difficulty picking outnavigation lights amongst the shore-line lights would bring back thethrottles and asses the situationApparently many do since countlessboaters enter Michigan harbors atnight without incident That tells methe aids to navigation lights servetheir intended purpose of guidingboaters safely into port and that mostboaters are in tune with InlandNavigation Rule 6 which addressessafe speed

Rule 6 reads ldquoEvery vessel shallat all times proceed at a safe speed sothat she can take proper and effectiveaction to avoid collision and be

stopped with a distance appropriateto the prevailing circumstances andconditionsrdquo Conditions include visi-bility vessel traffic density weatherconditions depth of water and back-ground lights at night such as shorelights Rule 6 could just as well becalled the rule of common sense orprudent seamanship

Safe speed and background lightsdo not only apply to boaters enteringharbors but those operating boats ininland lakes and bays as well Thefollowing case reveals how a boateroperating at night on Traverse Baylearned Rule 6 the hard way Theaccident remains mired in litigation

six people aboard Reportedly thestern light on the pontoon boat wasout when the accident occurred Thestern light outage however could notbe confirmed due to severe damageto the boatrsquos stern Deputy PaulPierce of the Traverse County MarineSheriffrsquos department was the firstofficial on scene and he told me apassenger on the pontoon boat hadsustained serious injuries Alcoholwas not involved

So who was at fault The boaterwho reportedly failed to display astern light or the boater who appar-ently failed to stop in accordancewith Rule 6 which addresses safespeed and prevailing circumstancesWithout question the prevailing cir-cumstances in the collision were stateof visibility as well as shorelinelights

I spoke with MichiganDepartment of Natural ResourcesOfficer Sean Kehoe the investingofficer on the pontoon boat accidentAccording to Officer Kehoe bothboats were in the lower bay headingon a westerly course towards a near-by shore where a major shorelineroad rims the lower bay That night

the road was packed with post fire-works traffic that looked like a stringof white and red Christmas tree lightsmoving along the shore These back-ground lights certainly qualify as pre-vailing circumstances that a prudentboater would consider regarding safespeed and state of visibility

By the way the fact that oneboater is in violation of the rules doesnot exonerate the boater who runs

into an unlit boat at night If Rule 6doesnrsquot hold up in court attorneyswill definitely be flipping pages toRule 5 which reads ldquoEvery vesselshall at all times maintain a properlookout by sight and hearing as wellas by all available means appropriateto the prevailing circumstances andconditions so as to make a fullappraisal of the situation and of therisk of collisionrdquo

That countless boaters safelyoperate in inland waters bays andnear harbor mouths at night withoutincident clearly indicates that mostboaters do abide by the rules BoatSmart mdash donrsquot be left out in the darkon a breakwater

The Furlex 200E (Electric) is designed around a highly efficient 12V or24V electric motor Power is transmitted to a self locking worm gear to rotatethe luff extrusion The motor uses only 30 amps under normal load Since it only takes 20- 30 seconds to reefor furl the sail the power consumption is negligible

In order to counteract overloading the system comes with a built-in overload cut-out If the sail is reefedwithout previously easing the sheet the power is immediately switched off The overload cut-out is automat-ically reactivated a few seconds after the In or Out buttons are released In the event of a loss of power thesail can be reefed manually

The Furlex 200E had its world premiegravere in November at METS (Marine Equipment Trade Show) inAmsterdam Seldeacuten plans on starting series production in spring 2007

A complete original equipment system will cost somewhere in the region of $3000-$4000 An upgradekit for use with a manual Furlex will cost about $2000

our return westward Making a pitstop in Little Current we refueledstocked up at the local deli created amarinade for our gargantuan steaksand bought a lunch of fish and chipsWe then sailed on to Croker Island agreat stop for kayaking and a geolo-gistrsquos dream for rock huntingDiscovering that the bag of ldquocharcoalrdquowas actually mesquite wood chips wehad nothing over which to grill ourmassive sirloins resulting in a spec-tacular experimental dinner That

nightrsquos impromptu meal of tomato-vodka-cream sauce over penne pairedwith a Merlot followed by dessertcrepes filled with a rum-soaked raisinand citrus compote was truly a totemof Passpartoutrsquos luck

Thursday we proceeded toDrummond Island back into USwaters As this was a brief stop only tocheck in with Customs just one mem-ber of the party was allowed to walkto the one general store for the solepurpose of procuring charcoal As thatindividual I considered it a great per-sonal sacrifice to walk directly mdash if

with hesitation mdash past the DrummondIsland Historical Museum but our tri-umphant return to carnivorism thatevening was a great comfort

With one day of vacation leftbefore the long stretch to Sister Baywe divided into three shifts for anovernight sail intending to stop atMackinac Island for breakfast beforecontinuing on to Beaver Island Nightsailing was quiet breezy and beauti-ful and the experience of navigatingby the stars was thrilling more likeflying over the dark horizon-lesswater than sailing We made suchgood time that we reached MackinacIsland at sunrise too early for a break-fast Captain ldquoTorpedordquo Jo decided weshouldnrsquot wait for We would proceedto Beaver Island it was a waste oftime to wait for businesses to open

Talk about a sacrifice The muse-umshellipthe horseshellipthe fudge Howcould we possibly bypass an islandwith an ice cream named after it Ibroke down and complained Our cap-tain held firm but as we motoredunder the Mackinac Bridge andwatched the sun rise he diplomatical-ly assured me I would appreciate theextra time on Beaver Island

We arrived at Beaver Island at 3 PM two hours before the fourmuseums closed keeping with thetheme of the trip I selected one toenjoy thoroughly The Old MormonPrint Shop Museum contains a fasci-nating exhibit on the dramatic lifereign and death of King James JesseStrang ruler of a Mormon settlementon the island from 1848 through 1856When it closed I looked through a fewshops and biked to the lighthouseadmiring the historic homes along theway That night in the marina we atethick spicy chili on the boat beforeheading to an Irish pub for a nightcapI have to admit our Captain wasrighthellipI thoroughly enjoyed BeaverIsland and with seven museums andliving history parks Mackinac Islandwould have required a much muchlonger visit anyway

Tips for Doing the North Channel in One Week bull Get there fast Put in some long days early onbull Despite the short time available avoid schedules

Go where the wind takes youbull Sail one-way donrsquot worry about getting the boat both

there and backbull Have a trusted friend or a delivery service take your boat

there or homebull Talk to your insurance agent about how your vessel is

covered with someone else operating itbull Charter a flight there or home From this remote location

it was cheaper and much less time consuming than fly-ing commercial

Advantagesbull Having your boat delivered preserves vacation timebull The trip may be impossible otherwisebull Having your boat help generate new stories for people

adds depth to your boat ownership experience

Disadvantagesbull One week only gives you the abridged version of the

North Channelbull A greater percentage of your vacation time will be spent

transitioning into ldquovacation moderdquobull A smaller time window means an increased risk of bad

weather eating up a greater percentage of your trip


Early Saturday we began our journey to Passpartoutrsquoshome port of Sister Bay Distant storms had sent us eight-foot waves and small craft warnings several sailorsenjoyed the opportunity to take the helm and ride therougher water and several shared their bagel sandwicheswith the fish After the tiring day we were grateful to reachSister Bay where we opted to go out for dinner anddropped off to bed shortly thereafter

Sunday we treated ourselves to breakfast at the WhiteGull Inn (the Door County cherry-stuffed French toast wasincredible) cleaned the boat and thanked Brian for the useof Passpartout before driving home It was a full week ofbeautiful places interesting conversations great fooddiverse amusements and learning opportunities that wentbeyond sailing Sure I would have liked to make morestops but those places will still be there for future trips(mmm fudge) Trying to squeeze too much in only leadsto stress the trick to enjoying the North Channel in a weekis to go in with a relaxed attitude and be open to the expe-riences that come your way Most importantly make sureyou have a mix of good sailors good cooks and good sto-rytellers on board to be honest our crew would have had ablast even if wersquod never left the boat

ConclusionDespite the hassles associated with travel planning thelogistics of the crew change was surprisingly easy We justmade sure we were docked near the specified airport andwe stepped into the cab that brought the relief crew Thecosts werenrsquot outrageous either especially if one comparesa powerboatrsquos fuel price to the logistics costs of doing aone-week sailing vacation

People are getting busier and vacation time is gettinghard to come by Unfortunately many people respond to thistime pressure by buying a powerboat a more expensive yetmuch faster alternative A one-week North Channel vaca-tion on a powerboat isnrsquot a challenge at all you just shellout a lot of money for fuel But a sailor can pay a little lessthan that for a return flight and a delivery crew and (s)hecan accomplish the same thing

This is certainly the way I will visit the North Channelin the future mdash until I retire that ishellip

Sailfest 2007 is a family-orientedopportunity for a fun stress-freesailboat chase experience A chaseis a sailing game in which slowerboats start first often by them-selves and are chased by fasterboats over a prescribed course orto a destination In Sailfest 2007we use a reverse order start toimplement the chase Each boat inthe event is given a time to startbased on the boatrsquos speed This is

based on a well defined handicap system called PHRF which standsfor the Portsmouth Handicap Racing Formula The normal course isdefined above but will be modified in the event of very light air Thisevent is all about having fun and learning about the pleasures ofsailing and sailing fast with an objective
