Compulsory Athlete Registration Coinciding with the start of the new track and field season, the latest version of the UKA Rules for Competition 2016 are to be launched on April 1st and UKA have announced information on the updates that will be included.

The new rule book includes important changes regarding compulsory athlete registration in competitions held under UKA Rules. It is important that athletes and others are aware of this.

It is important that athletes (and parents of younger athletes, UKA Rules apply from the Under 13 Age Group upwards) take responsibility for their role in ensuring their club registration is up to date. Be aware the volunteers at your club are involved in carrying out a wider range of activities to support athletes so playing your part is important.

Visit the England Athletics website (link below) where you will find information and advice for athletes, team managers, coaches, event organisers and club membership secretaries.

National British Athletics Indoor Championships, English Institute of

Sport, Sheffield (Sun. 28th Feb.) The ladies race was the first race on track. Bethan Davies was the clear favourite having set a British best of 12:46.77 in Cardiff in December. As the time was achieved in a mixed race the performance could not be ratified as a British record. Bethan went straight to the front of the field and produced 1000m splits of 4:14.24, 4:16.60 and 4:14.15 to record a personal best of 12:44.99. Last year’s race winner Italian Tatyana Gabellone was disqualified leaving Junior International Emma Achurch a clear second. American Susan Randall (who is in the UK training) crossed the line in third ahead of 16-year-old Sophie Lewis Ward who took bronze in the British Championship.

Tom Bosworth also excellent in the men’s race. Tom went straight into the lead, but was passed by Callum Wilkinson as they approached the end of the first lap. Tom regained the lead going down the back straight on the next lap and from then on was never headed. Looking fluent he recorded 1000m splits of 3:40.93, 3:40.39 and 3:36.89 for 10:58.21 removing 17 seconds from his own British record set in Jan. 2016. We can only speculate as to whether he would have bettered the listed World indoor best of 10:56 had he not started to waving to the crowd and show-boating on the last lap. Behind him the UK’s three leading juniors were all disqualified leaving Chris Snook and Tom Partington to come home in the silver and bronze medal positions, both recording personal bests.

Wilf Smith C275 – R.I.P.

Leicester Walking Club are sad to report the death of Wilf Smith C275. Wilf, who passed on 6th Feb. aged 91 years, was a one of the club's stars from many years ago but remained a lifelong supporter.

In July 1958, 34-year-old Wilf hit the front page of the Leicester Mercury by winning Leicester Walking Club’s Leicester to Skegness race on his first attempt to become centurion number 275. He completed two further Leicester to Skegness walks and many of the long running Leicester Mercury 20 Miles races.

John (Johnny) Morris C473 – R.I.P.

Belgrave Harriers regret to announce the death on Fri. 12th Feb of John (Johnny) Morris C 473. after illness at St George's Hospital, Tooting aged 83.

John had been a member of Belgrave Harriers since November 1958 and was elected a Life Member. Originally more into cycling he joined Belgrave and working for London Ports Authority on security he was able to compete in the Met. Police Barking to Southend Walk on many occasions. On retirement he was then employed at the Old Bailey on security.

He became Centurion 474 in his first 100 at Ewhurst in 1971 coming in together with the late John Keown C473. He went on to compete a further five 100 mile races. He would compete at all distances and was a regular in the National 50kms, Hastings and Brighton walks.

On retirement from walking he would be seen at many track and field meetings as an official.

Domestic Fortune Cup 10km, Leicester (Sun. 6th Dec.)

Emma Achurch led a small field of six walkers to brave the wind and rain of Storm Desmond, reports Colin Vesty. Producing negative splits of 27:30 and 26:45, Emma seemed to make light work of the demanding conditions finishing over 5 minutes ahead the rest.

At the finish, the bedraggled bunch of race walkers were very grateful to the even wetter group of volunteers/officials who stood out in the rain to make the event possible.

Eastern Counties AA & Essex AA Indoor Championships, Lee Valley (Sat. 6th Feb.)

After last year's one-man turnout in the Essex Championship, efforts were made to increase the field, which happened, but only slightly reports Dave Ainsworth.

New Essex ladies champion, who'd appeared in Southend's August Bank Holiday 1 Mile Walk, is better known as a half-marathon runner. The Eastern Counties Championship saw two others enter but fail to appear.

Steve Allen had things his own way as expected, and a large crowd were brought to life by a competitive sprint finish between the event's two ladies, both of whom had completed an earlier 5K Parkrun. Pam Abbott raced twice despite being under the weather.

Informative commentary was given by former race walker and now Essex County AA President June Cork, who also introduced medal

winners at a podium presentation by Eastern Counties AA Chairman Ted Butcher, an athletics' stalwart since the 1960s.

As for Dave Ainsworth it represented a 41 years' span between his 1st Essex County AA individual medal (1975 bronze medal/Essex 50K Walk at Basildon) and latest in 2016.

London Open Walks, Hillingdon Cycle Circuit (Sun. 7th Feb.)

The races were held in clear, crisp weather with a strong wind most of the time reports Peter Cassidy; despite the buffeting, a number of competitors claimed personal bests.

There were so many good individual performances, given the conditions, that it would be unfair to single out any of them for special mention.

Overall participation was up on last year with fifty-one starters against last year’s thirty-eight.

Aldershot retained the Reg Jacobs Trophy, even though they were depleted by illness in the ranks, and they and Cambridge are now the dominant teams in the south, although Surrey are making a comeback and Ashford – non-scorers in 2015 – are rallying.

Bob Wright Handicap Series Race 7, 5 Mile Road Walk Lancresse to White Rock, Guernsey (Sun. 14th Feb.)

Mick Le Sauvage claimed the overall victory in the Bob Wright Handicap series which ended with a 5-mile road walk from Lancresse to the White Rock. He had to give second best to race winner Stuart Le Noury, who moved into first place late in the race after starting off in last in the handicapped event. Stuart was amongst only a few of the walkers that walked to recent form and clocked an actual time of 41.16.

Le Sauvage finished half a minute or so behind Le Noury on the watch, with a 21 seconds gap back to the third walker to cross the line. Jayne Le Noury’s third place pushing her into second place in the overall standings ahead of Kay Coulson.

Only a point behind in fourth place overall was Peter Beckerleg who lost his chance of claiming a higher place when Rob Elliott and Phil Lockwood overtook him with only a few hundred yards to the finish.

Enfield League Race 2, 5 Mile, Enfield (Sat. 20th Feb.)

There was an improvement in the turnout for the second race of the 2016 series at Donkey Lane, reports Ron Wallwork; 39 on this occasion compared with 25 in January. Although conditions were unpleasant with cold blustery rain it didn’t prevent the majority of those who had raced in January from posting quicker times.

Southern President Chris Hobbs was over a minute quicker than when winning in January, yet had to be content with third place behind Francisco Reis and David Crane who only got separated in the last mile or so of the race. Grazina Narviliene easily saw-off the competition in the ladies’ race, but it is worth noting that all 12 ladies bettered the hour – the best since March 2014 when 13 of them accomplished this. Grazina also won that race.

To everyone’s delight, the redoubtable Ann Lewis the Individual League winner in 2003/04/05 and 06 and who has been battling cancer since 2005, was on the starting line.

Chris Smith Postal League 2015/2016 Round 3

For the third successive race, Ana Garcia (Silverdale School, Sheffield) finished ahead of Megan Stratton-Thomas (Olchfa School, Swansea). Amy Phipps (Ysgol Gufyn Ystalfera) took third on this occasion reports George Smolinski.

Each of the boy’s races this season has seen the same 1-2-3. Chris Snook just beat brother Tim by a solitary second with Ben Allen in third place.

All the categories in this popular 2km. race walking postal series will only be decided by the results of the final race. Charlotte Wallis currently leads Megan Packett by four points but both are being chased hard by Lucy Walker.

At the top of the boys’ league Luca Cundey maintains a handy lead. However, the next 5 places are covered by just 13 points.

In the team category, Farnham Heath End have a narrow 5-point margin over Olchfa School (Swansea) with last season’s champions Blaby Stokes Striders hoping to make a final challenge in the last race of the series.

Two seniors to race were Natalie Myers (City of Sheffield) 9:52 and Simon Pugh (Rotherham Harriers) 12:21.
