Minsk to host 2020 IAAF World Team Championships

Minsk, the capital and largest city of Belarus, has been awarded the right to host the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships 2020.

This will be the first occasion that Belarus has ever staged an IAAF World Athletics Series event.

Minsk staged this summer’s European 10,000m Cup competition and holds an annual half marathon.

Sebastian Coe commented: “I’m pleased that we are taking our world athletics series to another country for the first time which will help the development and profile of athletics. The city centre course makes this an attractive event for spectators to follow and their plan to hold kids’ race walking and an extreme mass race for adults, will assist the promotion by building a direct connection with the community.”

Vadim Devyatovskiy, BLR MF President commented: “We are very happy as this is our first experience with the IAAF (World Athletics Series) and we would like to integrate into the world athletics family. We hope that this event will be an important part of the history of athletics. We would like our youngsters, our teenagers and all other citizens of Belarus to take part in the (mass) race.”

Measurement of Flight Time in Race Walking

Dr Brian Hanley from Leeds Beckett University, has recently tested world-class walkers in terms of what kinds of flight times occur with each speed.

Comments

We've recently tested world-class walkers in terms of what kinds of flight times occur with each speed and we only see no (loss of?) contact when they're walking at about 10 km/hr. At 11 km/hr it's about 10 milliseconds of flight for men and 18 milliseconds for women (women usually have more flight at any given speed). We've always used flight times above 40 milliseconds as a guide to what is 'visible' and most elite men can walk at 14-15 km/hr within this amount of flight. Women generally manage below 40 milliseconds at 13-14 km/hr. Of course, the best technical walkers have less flight time than those who aren't as good (even if they are at the same ability in terms of times and finishing positions). From a theoretical point of view, I've calculated that most walkers could at best manage to only lose 1.3 km/hr if they managed no loss of contact but that would mean no leeway and would probably be physically impossible (given tiredness, excitement of competition, etc.). Even if they did have some threshold built into the shoe, I'm not sure how it could work in practice given the unreliable nature of technology.

Details of the study

The aim of our study was to measure the duration of loss of contact (‘flight time’) in elite-standard race walkers using different measuring devices. The force plates were considered the gold standard and the results measured using them are what are reported here. Seventeen international athletes took part in the study (10 men and seven women). The men had an average best time for 20 km of 1:23:06 (pace of 14.44 km/hr), and the women had an average best time for 20 km of 1:30:38 (13.33 km/hr). Of the 17 athletes, 14 had taken part in either the 2016 Olympic Games or the 2017 World Championships (the other three took part in other international competitions such as the World University Games).

The protocol used was similar to that published by De Angelis & Menchinelli in Italy in 1992. The athletes race walked down an indoor running track that had the three force plates located halfway along it. They walked at five pre-determined speeds, which were 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 km/hr for women, and 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 km/hr for men. The average flight times for each of these speeds are shown below:

Women

10 km/hr: –2 milliseconds (i.e., 2 milliseconds of double support / contact)

11 km/hr: 18 milliseconds

12 km/hr: 29 milliseconds

13 km/hr: 38 milliseconds

14 km/hr: 46 milliseconds

Men

11 km/hr: 11 milliseconds

12 km/hr: 22 milliseconds

13 km/hr: 32 milliseconds

14 km/hr: 42 milliseconds

15 km/hr: 40 milliseconds

The results were comparable to those reported by De Angelis & Menchinelli (1992) in that flight time increases with race walking speed, and men have less flight time than women at any given speed. Athletes tended to keep their flight times to within 40-45 milliseconds even when moving at faster speeds as their techniques were often better at these more familiar paces.

Our results also showed that other devices that are frequently used to measure flight time can provide misleading results if adjustments are not made to the sensitivity of the device, particularly given the way race walkers move differently from runners (who are more commonly the target population).

Domestic Race Results 2nd Northern Area Winter League, York (Sun. 29th Oct.)

A slightly better turn out at this regular venue, reports Alan Brooks. Dave Jones finally turned up to collect his first prize for last year’s series, but didn’t make a great start in the handicap for this years. That’s how it works, you see; the handicapper’s blue pencil has been at work!

Steyning Open 10km, Steyning, Sussex (Sat. 4th Nov.)

This re-scheduled race, cancelled on 21st October because of Storm Brian was held in much more favourable conditions, with just a slight headwind on the return on this out and back course, reports Ron Penfold.

Surprisingly the times were mostly slower than the day would suggest, with only one walker busting in the Buster Handicap held in conjunction.

Ian Richards lead the field from the start to turn in 26:55 followed by club mate Jimmy Ball a couple of minutes back, Anne Jones was first lady to turn in 33:41 followed by her younger club mate Liz Claridge seven seconds back, Ian Richards although slowing on the return maintained his distance from Jimmy to win comfortably, third was Steve Allen.

Anne Jones pulled away clear of Liz on the return to also win comfortably.

Bill Jackson Trophy 5km, Simister (Sat. 4th Nov.)

There was an excellent turnout for the race of both walkers and officials: the 17 walkers included three guests, reports Roy Gunnett.

Weather conditions were cold and windy with sunny spells.

Both the scratch race and handicap were won by Tony Bell. It was a yacht handicap and an excellent piece of handicapping by Dave Evans created a close finish.

91st Enfield Open 7 Mile, Lee Valley (Sat. 11th Nov.)

Jonathan Hobbs added his name to the impressive list of Enfield Open winners that stretches back to 1920, reports Ron Wallwork. On that list Francisco Reis (1987) who was the only walker who challenged the winner on this occasion. Grazina Narviliene walked will to win the ladies race, but the attention was on Helen Middleton who finished second and in doing so made history by becoming the first woman to win the Enfield League since its inception in 1998. Mark Culshaw currently suffering from shin-splints made a valiant effort to deprive Helen of the title, but has the consolation of being the men’s winner of the 2017 series.

Conditions were dry but very cold and following a period of silence to honour the fallen on Remembrance Day, the 44 walkers were sent on their way by Bill Sutherland the 1970 Commonwealth bronze medallist and it wasn’t long before Callum Wilkinson was clear of the field and although he crossed the line first, he had fallen foul of the judges. George Wilkinson continues to impress. Twelve Centurions were in action the heist place being Martin Fisher.

Although Enfield and Surrey Walking Club were equal on points the promoting club emerged team winners by virtue of the club’s fourth finisher.

Sarnia WC Bob Wright Handicap Series Race 3 3000 Metres Track Walk, Footes Lane, Guernsey (Sun. 12th Nov.)

Mick Le Sauvage leads the Bob Wright Handicap Series after three of the seven races completed, reports Rob Elliott. His sixth place in the latest race gives him a two-point lead over Peter Beckerleg and Donna Allan.

A windy morning greeted the walkers with the fastest Stuart Le Noury walking through the field to cross the line first from his position of last walker to start. His actual time of 14:36 gave him the handicap win from Dave Dorey. Dave’s 22:11 actual time was almost a minute up on his last performance.

Third place went to Rob Elliott only five seconds ahead of first woman Donna Allan. A closely packed race had positions two to nine separated by only 35 seconds.

There were consistent times in comparison to recent walks from relative newcomers Wendy Wilson and Kevin Allan, both coping well in the conditions.

At the other end of the scale, Kevin Le Noury, with over forty years’ experience, walked his first race as an M60 with a time slower than expected.

Surrey WC Open Track Races, Tonbridge (Sat. 18th Nov.)

This historic Surrey WC event for the Christmas Handicap Cup over 5000m was attended by five Surrey WC men plus seven visitors, reports Peter Hannell.

However, of more significance was the 3000m for the area’s young hopefuls, bringing some others, the total to twenty-three starters. More than half of the field were under 20 years of age with judging at the highest standard but no disqualifications.

The temperature was far from benign especially for the officials and many accompanying parents. The first two home in the main race were outstanding, particularly the Portuguese winner Francisco Reis whose 23:33 performance as he lapped the field was extremely impressive for a 57-year-old. In second place was Malcolm Martin, just coming back to full fitness, with a sub 27-minute time and another improvement. Naturally it was no surprise that he won the cup for the handicap with Shaun Lightman and Paul Gaston filling the frame. There was another improvement for Shaun coming back from a long layoff just in front of young Jacqueline Benson and less than a minute behind fellow Paul – an old rival.

Midland Winter League, Race 3, Coventry (Sun. 19th Nov.)

On the established 1km lap course at Warwick University, Coventry, the 3rd and Final Midland Winter League Series of 2017 took place on a very cold but dry day, report Glyn Jones. The walkers adapted themselves appropriately and turned out in fairly good numbers for the 10km and 5km races. The younger age groups continued to be low on entries but those that had supported all three races were rewarded at the final presentations.

In the final 5km race, the surprise and most welcomed winner was Daniel Mckerlich of Cardiff A.A.C. who had supported all three series events and even doubled up in the 10km race.

Daniel Mckerlich ~ Carolyn Dyall

Mark Williams and Graham Chapman continued to battle it out for top positions throughout the series. Mark eventually coming home winner of the scratch series and Graham taking overall first handicap award in the 10km.

Carolyn Dyall continued her good form in the 5km and took overall scratch winner for the series in the 5km.

Birchfield Harriers and Leicester W.C. were the only two teams to have completed all three series races resulting in Leicester winning both the mixed team awards in the 5km and 10km.

Overall a successful winter league series and the Midlands are very grateful for all those who supported the races and to the officials and volunteers who continue to give their support.

Sarnia WC 10km, North Side, Vale Guernsey (Sun. 19th Nov.)

Donna Allan had the walk of the day as she smashed the hour barrier for the 10 kilometres road walk held over the four-lap course at North Side, reports Rob Elliott. With race winner Stuart Le Noury away and gone from the start it was Donna that found herself trailing Rob Elliott after one 2.5 kilometres lap with both on course to break the hour. By three kilometres she had caught Elliott and left him, with both walkers walking well up on their recent performances.

Going through the half way point in around 29:45 for 5 kilometres, Donna had a lead of around 30 metres over Elliott and under her previous best for that distance. Looking smooth she continued to increase the gap and walking a slightly quicker second half she crossed the line in 59:21, taking almost four minutes off her time set in the corresponding race last year.

Race winner Le Noury had crossed the line in 54:29, with Elliott, still with a shout of getting under the hour with a lap to go, faded to finish nine seconds outside but pleased to get that close again.

Fourth place went to Kevin Le Noury just breaking 70 minutes, with the next three home Peter Beckerleg, Mick Le Sauvage and Wendy Wilson all finishing close together. Newcomer Wendy Wilson, after only a handful of races removed over 5 minutes off her previous best time with a time of 73:07. Jayne Le Noury walked under her target time to bring home the field in the longer race.

Surrey WC Addington Cup 7 Mile, Croydon (Sun. 26th Nov.)

Seven Surrey Walking Club and two visitors started this Club Championship on a cold but bright winter’s day, reports Peter Hannell. David Crane, in good form, was away from the start and, apparently not noticing the sharp climbs on each of the 8 laps, won both race and handicap in a good personal best time. He almost lapped the field despite a fairly good time from Malcolm Martin.

The competition down the field was in two groups as Dan Maskell would have caught Steve Allen had the latter not noticed the danger and managed to accelerate to a 40 second gap. Further down the last five started together but after the first lap gradually split with the last retiring. Shaun Lightman held off Chris Flint eventually made two minutes on his rival.

Second in the handicap David Hoben walked strongly on the hills to beat Geraldine Legon by three minutes and finding the climbs more challenging.

Manx Winter League, Andreas, Isle of Man (Sun. 26th Nov.)

Round 2 of the Up and Running Winter Walking League took place in chilly conditions around the Andreas village circuit.

The 10km was set off on handicap and resulted in a win for Michelle Turner (pictured below), making a welcome return to racing after a lengthy absence. Stewart Jones sliced five minutes from his first-

round time to get under the hour for second on handicap, while Voirrey Earnshaw-Cain and Chrissie Lewis removed four minutes from their Round 1 performances and were just five seconds apart for 3rd and 4th position respectively.

Ray Beattie also had a sizeable three-minute improvement to take 5th and Tony Edwards was back on song and under the hour again for 6th on handicap. Fastest 10km walker on the day was Gianni Epifani with a personal best of 48:24. Dale Farquhar was second fastest

with a season’s best of 52:00 while James Quirk was 3rd fastest with a lifetime best of 55:27. Fastest female was Michelle Turner with 56:38 from Bernie Ball 61:11 and not to be outdone by husband Dale, Jayne Farquhar was third fastest lady with 61:37 personal best.

The 5km resulted in a clear win on handicap from Lalaghe Earnshaw-Cain, who removed well over two minutes from her season opener. Sally Rothwell-Caley in 2nd and Louise Cowell in 3rd also took around a minute and ½ from their times and personal bests for all three ladies. Quickest walker in the 5km was Hannah Hunter, improving on her time from Round 1 by 45 seconds to record 25:42. Second fastest was junior Alice Bellando who pretty much matched her time from Round 1 with 30:33. Sharon Cain was third fastest and very close to her best with 31:41

The juniors raced well, with some fine techniques and close racing. Abbie Edwards continues to knock lumps of her personal best with 18:30 to take the win from Keira Heavey and Mia Dunwell who finished just 10 seconds apart in 20:33 and 20:43 all three girls are improving rapidly and walking well.

In the 2km Daniel Bassett dipped inside 14 minutes for the win and Dominic Dunwell took over 30 seconds off his time from round 1 for 2nd place. The only girl in the 2km, Alex Nicoll was 3rd. In the 1km Conor Basset took the win from the diminutive Aalin Heavey who walked a very stylish race for one so young, both making improvements on their times from Round 1.

Sarnia Walking Club Bob Wright Handicap Series Race Four, 3 Kilometres Road Walk, Cambridge Park (Sun. 26th Nov.)

Wendy Wilson moved into third place in the Bob Wright Handicap Series after the fourth of seven races, when winning the latest race over three kilometres at Cambridge Park, reports Rob Elliott. Her actual time was a new personal best time of 20:45, taking nine seconds off her previous best set recently.

Second place went to Kevin Le Noury moving back into form with 20.01. A good race from Kay Coulson gave her third place from Rob Elliott who walked the fastest time of the day just outside 17 minutes. He managed to reverse the order over next to finish Donna Allan who had beaten him over 10 kilometres the week before.

Donna started 20 seconds ahead of Elliott, who made up the gap easily and moved ahead in the first lap of three. He held on to his advantage until a few hundred metres from the end when Donna made the effort to move ahead and opened a gap herself before fading in the final straight where Elliott regained his position.

Mick Le Sauvage, Dave Dorey and Peter Beckerleg, the remaining walkers all finished within 14 seconds of each other on handicap.

There is now a close race in the series with four points separating the first four walkers with Mick Le Sauvage leading Donna Allan by a point followed by Wendy Wilson and Peter Beckerleg.

Yorkshire RWC Winter League #3/Soup & Roll League, Dalton, North Yorkshire (Sun. 26th Nov.)

Sunday morning dawned cold, crispy and clear with a few icy patches on the race circuit of undulating, twisting country lanes that required coning off, reports Trevor McDermot. Otherwise an interesting 5km route was clear and practically free of vehicle traffic. This small, scenic village nestled in upper Teesdale, was the venue of our first Soup & Roll League promotion nearly four years ago.

Eight different clubs were represented overall, eleven in each 5km and 10km tests, and eleven (precisely half of the walkers) were complete newcomers. A few usual stalwarts were absent. We were delighted to introduce the novel concept of Race Walking to members of the Catterick parkrun volunteer team, and to the Walker family from Sedgefield Harriers who were to eventually earn themselves three prizes to take home including a signed copy of Chris Maddocks’ book.

Travelling an awfully long way to support the promotion (Crete is hardly next door) was the always impressive Tony Taylor. After some technical issues occasioned by an injury-hit year he visibly relaxed on his second lap to take the 10km (and league handicap win too) by a good margin from 100-mile legend Martin Fisher. Sharon Gayter got the better of Dennis Jackson for 3rd, and was overjoyed to see husband Bill achieve 1st Novice place in his very first race walk.

In the 5km Pat Evans used her good experience of the course followed by venerable Winter League secretary Alan Brooks of the hosting club. In third was 14-year-old Abbie Walker who, having begun with homework in hand, and then strolled for a bit admiring the view, thought she might as well give the race some attention too. She was to finish in 37 mins barely out of breath, looking as if it was as much effort as putting the kettle on. One can only wonder at the potential.

Excellent efforts followed by mum Marie and Judith Fisher who thoroughly deserved their prizes. All Novices were presented with certificates by ex-World Record holder Marion Fawkes.

A free lunch of home-made vegetable soup and crusty rolls (that particular Northern delicacy of pie n’ peas also on offer besides chicken drumsticks and a very popular curry brought by the irrepressible Atmaram) left little cleaning up. Our very entertaining parkrun friends from the Gurkha community completely dominated the presentation with their insistence on photos with everything and everybody, and gave a fantastic reminder that family participation and FUN should be keystones in everything.

And the club gained another three new members.

The afternoon saw an EA officials Level 1 module in race walking in the village hall meeting room, under the control of top judge Ian Richards; those present were able to get some practical experience from the racing earlier.

So that was it. A ‘taster’ day with fresh air, RW book stall, nice food, an attractive venue, and responses at short notice from local community, Athletic clubs, parkrun brigade, England Athletics and different generations of age/family participation, in order to introduce race walking. Much could be done better but It was all privately sponsored and gives an idea of what might be achieved with support from official bodies. The talent is out there waiting.

Dick Maxwell Memorial 10k at Simister (Sat. 2nd Dec.)

The race was held over the tough/undulating six lap 'Nightmare Course' - on an overcast cool day (6C), reports Roy Gunnett.

There was a good turnout of 16 walkers, this included four guest walkers. Adrian Edwards took an early lead which he held over the first half of the race, he was closely followed by Martin Fisher and then Martin Young. Martin Fisher in the second half gradually reeled in Adrian, took the lead and went on to win the scratch race.

Dave Crompton won the handicap and was awarded the Dick Maxwell trophy.

Round 2 Chris Smith Race Walking League 2017/18

Ben Allen is in a rich vein of form over a range of distances up to 10km and won his first Chris Smith league race with a personal best, reports George Smolinski. Nick Hart, with a personal best, was runner up on this occasion with Jordan Price just nine seconds back. In the girl’s category the 1-2-3 mirrored that of the first race.

Going into the winter “break”, competition is tight at the top of both leagues. Nick leads Ben by a solitary point in the boy’s league while a handful of points separates Caitlin Casey from Kelsey Tozer and Bethan Anthony in the girl’s competition.

In the battle for the team title, Highworth Grammar (Ashford) currently hold a healthy lead.
