Translations

Dolce Amore, bendato Dio

God of Love, fair blindfold Cupid, Cease to make me sigh and pine, Ah, Send an arrow its own hurt healing Like Achilles’ merciful lance. With the radiant glowing glance Of two lovely eyes unfeeling Pierce no more this heart of mine, Ah… Lucci vezzose

Eyes so alluring, Will ye forever Your scorn enduring, On me bestow? Cold and unfeeling, Will ye then never, Some mercy show? Die Lotosblume

The lotus flower is afraid Of the sun’s splendor, And with bowed head, Dreaming, she awaits the night.

The moon, he is her lover; He wakes her with his light, And to him she happily unveils Her innocent flower face.

She blooms and glows and gleams, And gazes silently upward; She sends forth her fragrance and weeps and trembles With love and love’s pain. Der Nussbaum

A nut tree grows in front of the house. Fragrant and airy It spreads out its leafy branches.

Many lovely blossoms grow on it. Gentle breezes Come to caress them lovingly.

They whisper about a girl who Thinks all night And all day of, alas, she herself knows not what.

They whisper. Who is able to Discern such a quiet gesture? They whisper of a bridegroom and of next year.

The girl listens, the tree rustles. Longing, imagining She sinks, smiling, into sleep and dreams. Lorelei

I do not know the reason That I feel so sad; An old tale from long ago Continues to haunt my mind.

The air is cool and it grows dark, And quietly flows the Rhine; The peak of the mountain glistens In the evening sunshine.

A most beautiful maiden sits So wonderously up there, Her golden treasure sparkles, She combs her golden hair.

She combs it with a comb of gold While she sings a song That has a wonderfully strange And powerful melody.

The boatman in his little skiff Is seized with longings, and violent dispair He does not look at the rocks ahead, He looks only up at the heights.

I think, in the end that the waves Swallow the boatman and his boat And that this was done By the Lorelei and her singing.

Translations continued…

“Oh! quante volte” from I Capuleti e i Montecchi

Here I am, dressed brilliantly… Here I am adorned… Like a victim at the altar. Oh! If only I could Fall like a sacrifice at the base of the alter! O nuptial flames, So horrid to me, so fateful, May you ah! May you be my funeral torches. I burn… a blaze, a furnace Completely engulfs me. A cooling breeze I seek vainly! Where are you, Romeo? To what land have you gone? Where, where shall I send you my yearning cries?

Oh! How often, oh! Very often I call for you, crying to heaven! With what ardor I look for you And mislead my desire! A vision of your face, Ah! The sunlight seems to me: Ah! The winds that drift round me Seem to me to be your breath.

Tant que je t’aimais…

As much as I love you, I promise you, my love And now, I am yours I play you the piccolo J’ai un coquin de frère…

I have a mischievous brother, that makes me mad. He says to my mother that I love my shepherd. Cette eau de Rose…

Spring water will kill you, my pretty Spring water will kill you, etc. Do not drink water, my pretty, my pretty Take a glass of wine, it will do you good! etc. Le Baïlèro

Shepherd across the river, you don’t seem to be afraid, sing the Bailero. Indeed I’m not, and you too, sing the Bailero.
