Biography● As a child, her mother’s influence

showed her the beauty of nature● She spent a lot of her childhood

outdoors-lived on 65 acres of land● Carson had a natural ability and

interest in writing○ At age 11, she wrote an article, “A

against defying social norms for women at the time

What was the problem?● She was very concerned with the Department of

Agriculture’s policies (USDA)● The concern was with the use of harmful pesticides, he

concern prompted the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

● There was also controversy behind the protection and preservation of Marine life

Actions taken in response ● She wrote daily articles on Marine life in the

Baltimore Sun● She published two books, one in 1941

called ‘Under The Sea’ and in 1951 she published ‘The Sea Around Us’

● From 1936 to 1952 she took a full-time position at the Fish and Wildlife services (FWS) where she helped protect all wildlife and marine species

● Being a great writer and editor, by the early 1950’s her job and taken her into the publishing division, where she became head-editor

Her impact in the greater society● Her book, Silent Spring, was one of the causes of our big

environmental movements of today.○ Silent Spring also led to the US government doing/funding

environmental research and eventually forming the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

● Her work caused conversations about how to make decisions keeping the environment in mind.

Her impact (Continued)● Carson’s books Under the Sea Wind, The Sea Around Us, and

The Edge of the Sea increased the population’s knowledge and interest in the marine world.

● Carson made the environmental crisis feel more real to people. ○ They could see how they impacted the environment and
