HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT

PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

STEREOTYPES IN A TEEN FILM

It’s the use of mise en scene, camera, props and editing to allow the audience to get an insight of the

character’s personality without necessarily knowing the character.

The Jock - who are a group of athletes who are the school's 'celebrities' and include only one male who is the

'hottie'. All girls seem to crush on this one guy, however he ends up dating the head cheerleader as a term of

'status'. This means that the head of the Jock is unlikely to date someone who isn't well known in the school as she

would be a 'downgrade' of him.

The Head Cheerleader - this character is mostly the popular girl of the school that most girls wish to be like.

She normally has other cheer mates that follow her around the school but aren't as popular. The character also

tents to be a bully towards students and sees herself as royalty to the school. In most Teen Movies, this normally

backfires and something drastic happens causing her not to be popular.

The Geek/Nerd - is dressed in odd/old clothing with big glasses and are always seen carrying loads of books. This

character is normally the Jock's victim and is always bullied by them. In odd occasions, you do hear them trying to

use 'hip' language to the Jocks but are always portrayed as idiots when they do say something to try and fit in.

SOCIAL GROUPS IN ‘BLEEDING IN LOVE’

As our film isn’t an average Teen Movie, we have changed and altered a few of the characters. For example,

the main character is a psycho, therefore we have created two different environments that we filmed in to

show her mindset.

We thought, as a group, that it would be good to create strong mise en scene to demonstrate the character’s

personality. That’s why we created a scene when the character is in the bedroom alone, away from everyone,

fantasizing about her crush. I think that this created an insight to her mindset because the audience is

allowed to see her obsession. This is shown through the pictures on the wall of the guy and we can see that

she has drawn hearts on all over the pictures. To make the scene even more intense, we decided to make the

lighting dimmer than usual and use a match to highlight the pictures.

On the other hand, we wanted to create a scene where the character is shown in college and around other

people. The point of this was to contrast her behaviour between the two locations. We see in these scenes

that she is dressed casually and acts normal showing that no one knows that she’s a psycho. Otherwise, we

would show her in a way that she stands out amongst the people in her college.
