With Mayor John Dickert seeking reelection, and local political circles already buzzing about potential challengers, four local residents have told The Journal Times they are at least considering a run for the seat. While no one has officially announced that they are running, the wouldbe candidates — the Rev. Melvin Hargrove, Alderman Eddie Diehl, Alderman Sandy Weidner and Robin Coventry — all said they are contemplating throwing their hats in the ring. Hargrove, 48, a Racine Unified School Board member and the pastor of Zoe Outreach Ministries, 2310 Racine St., said that while he is still just considering running for the seat, he has learned that his interest is more than “just a notion.” “I know my motivation is pure, but I want to make sure that the message I want to send is pure as well,” Hargrove said recently. “There are certain conversations I have had about this that have caused me to want to dig a little deeper before actually I say yea or nay.” Diehl, 51, who was elected to City Council in April 2013 to represent the city’s 15th District, said he is simply mulling over the idea of running. “I think a lot of people should consider running because it’s better to have more people in the candidate pool,” Fourth Fest photos Positively Racine County 2015 Traffic Fatalities Special report: Samesex marriage Downtown crash Guide to Wisconsin state parks Poll tracker: GOP presidential candidates Racine County Scanner Feed Trending

Dickert fundraises as others mullchallenges for 2015 election

RACINE — April 7 is more than eight months away, butthe 2015 race for Racine mayor may already have started— if only in coffee shops, living rooms and partyheadquarters.

With Mayor John Dickert seeking reelection, and localpolitical circles already buzzing about potentialchallengers, four local residents have told The JournalTimes they are at least considering a run for the seat.

While no one has officially announced that they arerunning, the wouldbe candidates — the Rev. MelvinHargrove, Alderman Eddie Diehl, Alderman SandyWeidner and Robin Coventry — all said they arecontemplating throwing their hats in the ring.

“I know my motivation is pure, but I want to make sure thatthe message I want to send is pure as well,” Hargrovesaid recently. “There are certain conversations I have hadabout this that have caused me to want to dig a littledeeper before actually I say yea or nay.”

Diehl, 51, who was elected to City Council in April 2013 torepresent the city’s 15th District, said he is simply mullingover the idea of running.

At a glanceNext spring’s election is still monthsaway but some locals are alreadyconsidering potential challenges toMayor John Dickert.

Diehl said. “I think having more discussion, more debate,creates more input from citizens and you get a betterproduct for the taxpayers.”

Weidner, 62, who represents residents in the city’s 6thDistrict, said she started considering running for the seatafter being approached by local residents.

“I’m giving it some thought, but I am still in the powwowphase with my family,” she said.

Coventry, 54, who just finished serving as president ofPreservation Racine, said simply that she is consideringrunning for the seat.

If Diehl, Weidner, Hargrove, or Coventry end up actually running for the seat, Dickert said he iseager to hear what the wouldbe candidates would do differently if they were mayor.

Picked by voters in 2009 to finish the the term Gary Becker after Becker’s resignation on Jan. 20of that year, Dickert was elected to his first full term in office in the spring of 2011.

He’s said he’s running for reelection to finish the work he and his administration started five yearsago.

“I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t run,” he said. “To this day I still feel pretty blessed tohave my job. I appreciate that people are giving us a chance to do our work, and if they aresatisfied or not we’ll know about at it at the election.”

To prepare for the upcoming race, Dickert, 51, said his campaign committee has set a goal ofraising $30,000 before the race starts, and then raise another $30,000 or $60,000, depending onwhat is needed, while the race is going.

According to continuing campaign finance reports, which all active committees are required to filetwice a year in July and December, “Dickert for Mayor” had just under $13,200 in cash on hand asof June 30.

While the general spring election is April 7, a primary could be held on Feb. 17, if enoughcandidates get on the ballot.

Dec. 1 is the first day candidates for local seats can begin gathering nominating signatures, butany committee formed to help get a person elected to office must register its group as soon as itstarts collecting contributions, said Mike Haas, an attorney with the state GovernmentAccountability Board.

Candidates aren’t the only ones ready for the race. Sam Wahlen, 20, who sits on executive boardof the Racine County Republican Party and serves as the chairman of its candidate recruitmentcommittee, said the local GOP has “been very involved in examining” the resumes of those whohave already expressed an interest in running for the seat, as well as scouting for people whomight make good candidates.

Meanwhile, no one within the Racine County Democratic Party has publicly expressed an interestin running for mayor and the party is not actively recruiting candidates, chairwoman MegAndrietsch said.

While the mayor’s race is nonpartisan, Dickert has been involved with the party, including servingas a local delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He was named one of four“rising stars” by the state Democratic Party in 2013.

Local Democrat and Republican parties have been known to endorse candidates for the office.

“We believe that it is amazing what Democrats and Republicans can agree on when they removethe ‘R’ and the ‘D’ from in front of their names,” Wahlen said.
