Meway will be up and AdamJeff CollersonGreyhounds

UNTIL three months ago AdamMeway had won just two sprints atGoulburn but tonight is poised to cap aremarkable transformation by winningthe 49th running of the Group OneNational Derby at The Gardens.

A new addition to big race trainerAnthony Azzopardi's team, AdamMeway led throughout to win his semi-final in 29.56sec.

Hot favourite Prince Diablo won in anear record 29.24 but doesn't possessAdam Meway's early speed.

"Prince Diablo is the one to beat butour dog ran fastest time of 4.90 to thefirst mark so should lead," Azzopardisaid yesterday. "Being in front in finalsis always a big advantage."

Azzopardi, 32, grew up helping dadCharlie with his pacers but by the age ofeight preferred the dogs.

"That was when I began walking myfirst greyhound and I've had them eversince." he said.

Azzopardi won the 2009 Group OneAssociation Cup in race-record timewith Lilley Criminal and last year'sNational Sprint Championship withSmooth Fancy.

But his luck soured in WA last week

with his stayer Seek And Destroyfracturing a sesamoid when second in aheat of the Cannington Galaxy.

Up And Away, desperately unluckywhen second in her semi-final, has theearly brilliance to lead throughout inForsythe's National Futurity, tonight'sother Group One final at The Gardens.

WITH the Newcastle track occupy-ing the night-time slot Wentworth Parktoday will be a twilight fixture featuringChinese New Year celebrations. Begin-ning at 3.30pm there will be a liondance, lantern and dragon mask-making demonstrations.

Hope: Adam Meway with kennelforeman Darryn Melvaine

DERBY, FUTURITY DECIDERSGroup 1 racing and The Gardens are rare bed fellows, but on Friday night some of the best youngsters inAustralia clash at the elite level in the National Derbyand Futurity finals.

The Newcastle Hera/d-sponsored derby boasts afield of rare quality.

Rails runner Prince Diablo posted 29.24 seconds -just .01 outside the track record - in his six lengthssemi-final win over Noar In Knocka.

Trainer John Finn gave the training caper away lastApril due to health concerns, but the emergence ofWinsome Gun, his sister Winsome Shiraz and nowPrince Diablo has put a real spring into theWollongong-based trainer's step.

Prior to joining the small Finn team, Prince Diablohad won at The Gardens in a slick 29.66.

He is not a fast beginner by any means but giventime to balance in the first 20 metres can show anelectric turn of foot.

After trailing Noar In Knocka by four lengths after150m in the semi-final, he broke to a five-lengthadvantage by the end of the back straight.

The rails alley in any feature is a plus and this sonof Premier Fantasy showed the strength of his finishlast week.

If there is a chink in his make-up it is at the start,

Friday night's Big6 atWentworth Park kicks offwith a jackpot of $748.96.The smart Vancouver Kiss(race seven) is the best betof the night.

and Anthony Azzopardi's Adam Meway might just bethe testing material if Prince Diablo slips up.

He led from box four in his semi-final win (29.56)over powerhouse finisher Kinga Zac.

Already a group 1 winner, Victorian Up And Awayhas been posted as the $2.50 elect on TAB SportsbetFixed Odds for the futurity final.

Trainer Graeme Bate brought his star to The Gar-dens on January 21 for a trial at the track, registeringa respectable 29.78.

Seven days later, Up And Away was cut down in thelatter stages by kennelmate and Laurels minor place-getter Tonnelli Bale in 29.55.

Box two helped Ton nelli Bale last time out, but theseven alley is not nearly as suitable in this$50,000-to-the-winner contest.

Queenslander Bogie Beltah (29.44) posted the fast-est time of the futurity semi-finals.

LIKELY LAD'S CUP BIDSprinter of the moment Kilty Lad will be out toemulate his sire Superman in Saturday's Sky RacingPerth Cup at Cannington.

Already a two-time group 1 winner, Kilty Lad tacklesa talented line-up in the final which, at $140,000 tothe winner, is the fourth richest race in Australia.

Local hero Pedrosa, defending champion HighEarner, Cranbourne Cup winner Gold Heritage andveteran Blue Goose must be respected.

On the same night, The Galaxy (715m) boasts San-down 715m record-holder Pillow Torque, emergingstar Bobby Boucheau, Dashing Corsair, Blue Lorianand So Seductive.

IT'S a miracle Surfin'Ethics is racing, let alonebeing favourite to scorehis ninth win in 21 startsat Wentworth Park tonight.

He so severely injureda stopper bone as a puphe could not be broken inuntil he was 18 months old.

The recurring injury hasrestricted his career but heran the race of his life tochase home flying MoreSpace at WP last week.

Surfin' Ethics wassecond throughout, goingdown by just four lengthsin a blistering 29.97sec.

Gavin Smith, whoseson David trains the dog, said later they had been

concerned Surfin' Ethicscould have been short ofa run.

It was only the dog'ssecond race since July sohe should strip much fitterfor tonight's GreyhoundProducts Direct Stake.

NAT'S The One, fastestheat winner of the groupone National Futurity atThe Gardens, had no luckwhen sixth in her semi-final and should win "firstup" at WP tonight.

The brilliant front-runner is poised to leadthroughout after drawingbox one in the PagesEvent Hire Stake.

GREYHOUND fanscontinue to get a raw dealwith late-running horseand harness events forcingon-time dog races to beflicked from Sky 1 to 2.

A keen trot punterwaited all night to watchhis mate Paul Bigeth's dogCool Rattler win at WPyesterday week but missedthe event, transferred toSky 2 at the last minute.

Logically, behindschedule events, such asharness races with theirinterminable false starts, should get the boot fromSky 1 but that seldomhappens.

DID I Entertain should onlyneed a clean start to notchhis 24th WP win - one shortof the record - in tonight'sGlobe Memorial Stake.

Meadows showsinnovation pays

Uponits opening in 1999, The Meadows was

perceived to be a track in the wrong part oftown. In Melbourne's north in a developinglight industrial precinct at Broadmeadows,

the vellue is now, perhaps, the most profitable in thecountry and vies with Dapto for its innovation.

On Monday night, fields for The Meadows' invita-tional features - the Temle e, Rookie Rebel and ZoomTop - are announced and its festival of racing willofficially be underway.

The Temlee is already at group 1 level and ifpunters look at the qualitywhich was on show atCannington on Saturday night, they will have anidea of what you will see race here next Saturday,"The Meadows general manager Marg Long said."The Temlee contenders are seeded into the Austra-lian Cup heats on February 26 while eight prelimin-ary heatwinners this week will be added to the 56seeded greyhounds. The sixty-four make up the Aus-tralian Cup hopefuls.

"Our Rookie Rebel is over 600m while the ZoomTop is over 525m. And that's where we can reflect onCannington again. Their Galaxy will be invited to theZoom Top and that's not giving away any secret at all.

"Sandown 715m record-holder Pillow Torque,Sandown's 595m record-holder Bobby Boucheau, group 1 winners Dashing Corsair, Blue Lorian andSo Seductive - all being well-will line up again insearch of the $30,000 first prize. Add in our trackrecord-holder Nellie Noodles, NSW's Lady Arko andSlick Lee and we might well have the highest-ratedfield of stayers ever assembled."

The Rookie Rebel, meanwhile, is no bit-part player"Our 600m races are especially popular and Sale

Cup-winner Symmetry is the real big name beingtargeted at the Rookie Rebel," Long said.

Sad moviescontains ahappy endingTHEY say there's no place for emotion inracing, but Irene Buttsworth's specialaffection for Sad Movies, a greyhound herhusband was training, has become abonanza for the Bathurst family.

At Wentworth Park last weekend, SadMovies, trained by John Buttsworth forhis wife, scored her fifth win in seven cityraces and took her earnings to $23,400.

"Sad Movies' dam Stolen Moments isfrom the same litter as Singin' The Blues, who won the 2007 Tweed Heads Galaxyfor Jonathon Brown," Buttsworth said.

"Early in her career I was training SadMovies for him and won two races atGrafton with her.

"Irene was keen on the bitch soJonathon sold her to us for $5000."

The Buttsworth name is legendary ingreyhound racing, with John's late fatherDick a GBOTA director from 1963 until1979, when he was awarded lifemembership.

SENTIMENT also played a role in MrBrix winning his first race at Goulburn lastweekend at his 55th start.

Trainer Mick Player explained lastweek: "The owners sacked him ninemonths ago and as I was fond of the dogthey gave him to me.

"Mr Brix has always shown some abilityand until Goulburn had run 16 placings butjust never managed to get his head overthe line first."

CHAMPION northern coalfields bitchIsadoll has been retired after fracturing astopper bone during last week's NationalFuturity semi-finals at The Gardens.Isadoll, who posted the second-fastest timein the history of the race when she won the2010 Vic Peters Memorial Classic at

. . .

wentwortn Park, was raced by maitlanci'sBrad Canty and trained at Sawyer's Gullyby Wayne Vanderburg.

DOEN continued an 18-year associationbetween breeder Allen Lang, a cherryfarmer from Young, and Londonderrytrainer Pauline Moran, when he won a400m final at Gosford on Tuesday.

Despite racing wide, Doen woncomfortably in 23.32sec, after posting a fast23.24sec in his 400m heat win.

Zingalong Red, who won a WP SprintChampionship, was the best greyhoundMoran trained for Lang, but she has a goodopinion of 21-month-old Doen.

"He gets wide but I think he will run520 metres," Moran said.

"I trained his dam Yes Miss Jane forAllen and although she was a short coursebitch she became stronger with age andwon over 500 metres."

TOMORROW night's WindsorLeagues Club Maiden Classic at Bullishould be this week's country racinghighlight.

Free Pass, trained at Warilla by JohnFinn, struck trouble when sixth in his heatbut led throughout to post a sizzling26.47sec in his semi-final.

Fastest (26.49sec) heat winner FancyWill took 26.67sec to win his semi-finalbut was badly hampered trying to reachthe rails when fourth at the first turn.

Thirlmere trainer Majella Ferguson'sboom puppy Sanfe overcame a slow startto win his heat in 26.69sec and after beingfourth away, exploded to the lead at thefirst bend to win his semi-finalin 26.53sec.

At the trackALL THE TALK FROM THE TURF WITH BRENT ZERAFA

Tale of two cities'extreme weather

THE racing folk are known to talktheir own language and can oftenbe quite repetitive with phraseslike "go you good thing","tragedy beaten" and "I'm on thefavourite", but the native tonguewas replaced by "geeze it's hot"yesterday.

The Sydney Turf Club's finalmeeting at Rosehill Gardens washeld in sweltering conditions, which made life difficult for horsesand punters.

Temperatures soared beyondthe 40C mark and the furnace-likewesterly wind ensured that theshade offered no relief.

In a extremely rare move, theSTC decided on a "no ties" policyin the members' area, which wasgladly welcomed.

Some trainers still sported a tieand Gary Portelli, who trainedSomepin Anypin to his secondstraight win, even wore his jacket

The heat was extreme but themeeting was never in doubt, according to chief steward RayMurrihy. "We haven't had anyhorses affected that badly, which isgood," he said.

Murrihy also made the pointthat the temperature was higher atRoyal Randwick in Sydney's

eastern suburbs. The extreme heat caused havoc

to greyhound racing, with allmeetings in Sydney and theGardens at Newcastle called off.

The decision was made so thatthe dogs would not have to travelin the heat.

Sunday Telegraph greyhoundexpert Jeff Collerson could notrecall a night meeting ever beingcalled off due to the heat.

In Melbourne, drenching rainforced the meeting at Caulfield tobe abandoned, with three racesadded to the Wednesday card.

GeorgieLyn doesAngeloproudJeff CollersonGreyhounds

THERE hasn't been a morepopular winner in years thanGeorgie Lyn at Dapto onWednesday. She was a $5.90chance, not an odds-onpublic pick, but three daysearlier her popular owner-trainer Angelo Tsohalis haddied of a heart attack.

His widow Lyn askedfamily friend Brett Turner totake Georgie Lyn to Daptobecause Angelo had beencertain she would win.

Until Wednesday, GeorgieLyn, named after Angelo'sson and wife, had won justonce in 15 starts, but shepowered home for acomfortable victory.

Even more remarkablewas that Plucka Duck fellearly and could have causeda no-race had she rejoinedthe field.

Yet Plucka Duck, who hadfractured a shoulder, stoodmotionless watching GeorgieLyn and company whiz pastwithout interfering with thetrue running of the event.

SYDNEY'S biggest dog

bookie Julian Gauld hasmoved to the Gold Coast buthe is keen to continuefielding at Wentworth Parkon Fridays and Saturdays.

Gauld said GRNSW wasdebating whether to allowhim to run a "satellite"betting stand, so wasprepared to more than triplethe $30,000 paymentguarantee to $100,000 whenhe is not physically on hisstand. For years rails bookiesat Randwick have operatedup to three stands at springand autumn carnivals. In thiscomputer age there shouldbe no problem with Gauld'srequest.

Wentworth Park, withfour good bookmakers, remains the only dog track inAustralia where big punterscan "get set".

SYDNEY Cup winner NanaCook is a surprise entry inMelbourne's The Zoom Topon February 19 but won't bestarting.

She is back in work afterbeing injured in the Summer

Cup in late November and isgoing well but won't beready in time to run a strong725m at The Meadows,"trainer Geoff Cook saidyesterday.

Also entered for TheZoom Top is Sydney's 2010National DistanceChampionship winner BlueLorian while More Space andTuiaki are the NSWnominations for The Temleeover 525m at the samemeeting.

Saturday night's PerthCup winner High Earner isalso a Temlee candidate.

GRNSW had no choice butto postpone Saturday's WPfixture until tonight.

Advice from the weatherbureau was that searingtemperatures were unlikelyto drop by sunset and, withmany trainers coming fromcountry areas to Sydneybetween 3.30pm and 5.30pm,it was decided to call themeeting off.

THEfinal of the Caldwell

Electrical Blue Pawsseries will take centrestage at the 10-event race

program to be held at the GraftonGreyhound Racing Club this after-noon.

Ellangowan-based trainer GavinLowe will rug up the fastest heatwinner with Perplexing Cloudtaking time honours following therunning of two evenly contestedheats last Thursday courtesy ofher solid 23.61 second perfor-mance.

On that occasion the daughter ofDragon Fire and Enigmatic Ellemade every post a winner fromher box 8 draw and connectionswill be hoping for a repeat perfor-mance this afternoon.

The runner that they will allhave to beat, however, is theQueensland-based Petie Pie whowas desperately unlucky when

Blue Paws featurefinishing a close second to Per-plexing Cloud in her heat afterfinding interference on a numberof occasions. The Yield Wisener-trained runner all but went to thelead soon after box rise beforebeing dragged down by Hi GaryAgain and his effort to get so closewas full of merit. Ironically HiGary Again has gained a start asthe reserve runner and once againhas drawn directly inside PetiePie.

In fact the Perplexing Cloudheat looks to hold the key to therace as Joy Will, which finished inthird position in that heat, alsolooks to be a live hope havingdrawn the 1 box. The two grey-hounds on her direct outside donot possess a lot of early pace sothe Sonia Kempshall-trained run-ner should get clear gallopingroom from there.

The other heat winner, Adios

Queen, is also worthy of consider-ation but her racing style is to getback and run on and this is notgenerally a successful formula ingreyhound racing. She will needluck in the run to the first turn.

Once again throughout themonth of February all race win-ners that carry the pink rug willearn a $500 donation to theMcGrath Foundation from Grey-hound Racing New South Wales solet's hope they have more luck thisweek as unfortunately the onlyrunner to salute from box 8 lastweek was Perplexing Cloud, butthat runner carried the green andwhite rug as the first reserve. Thelikes of Mrs Slocombe and UptownDiva, who will each carry the pinkrug, look to have bright prospectsof tipping the cash into the worthycause this afternoon.

She sped over the 400m in 22.74sec, just.09sec outside her best Bulli time.

Campbell, who has only Vaidosa in herkennels, said: "I plan to take her toWentworth Park.

"Vaidosa began racing last April andwon her first two starts. She was way out infront at her third race when she tore themuscle away from her shoulder.

"After coming back with wins at Appinand Bulli she caught the lure in a trial andtore her chest muscles. That meant I hadto abandon plans to run her in a puppyclassic at Wentworth Park.

"I didn't expert her to win on Monday, because she had box eight and likes to rail, while Marco Man, a good dog, hadbox one.

"But Vaidosa surprised me by taking

the lead quickly."Campbell, who moved from Cowra to

attend university on the south coast, worksher greyhounds in partnership withsuccessful Nowra trainer Melissa Griffin.

Griffin is the aunt of Rod McDonald,Cowra's leading trainer who wonWentworth Park's 2009 Golden EasterEgg, Australia's biggest race, with DanaBeatrice.

WHEN Peter Whye's family gave hima greyhound puppy for Christmas theycould not have dreamed of the financialbonanza they were handing him.

That puppy, racing as Blue Lorian, has earned $310,750 prizemoney andchases another $30,000 pay cheque intomorrow night's 725m The Zoom Topat Melbourne's The Meadows.

He won four of 13 group race finalshe made in 2010 and. while Victorians

Tomorrow's The TemIee has had asecond scratching with WA star Ped-rosa, who had box four, to be replacedby second reserve He Knows Uno.

"The track was a bog when shetrialled so I'm not too worried abouther slow time," trainer Tony Messinasaid yesterday.

Red Halo had box six when sheeasily defeated a strong field at hermost recent start on February 9.

"She is like her mother Kingsbrae Di,who won a couple of races at Wenty,"Frazer said this week. "Kingsbrae Di wasfast early but not strong at the finish.

"Due to her early speed boxes don'tmatter much to Kingsbrae Jane and aslong as she draws anywhere from one tosix next Friday she'll be a chance."

Bond Reward to make a meal of itJeff CollersonGreyhounds

TRAINER Vince Spiteri has adopted aradical but logical technique to per-suade Bond Reward to jump cleanlyat Wentworth Park tonight.

In a desperate bid to improve BondReward's recent poor starts, Spiteri hasbeen offering the dog his dinner infront of a starting box.

Bond Reward has drawn eight in theAAA Radiator Specialists Stake andSpiteri believes the $8 chance is well

boxed. "There is certainly nothingwrong with him but he can't afford tomiss the start," Spiteri said. "I've triedeverything to get him to jump."

Bond Reward led throughout froman outside box to win at WP onOctober 17 in the process clocking aslick 30.43 and posting fast sectionaltimes of 5.46 and 14.04sec.

But since then the dog has repeatedlybungled the start at WP, although hewas fourth away before winning at Bullithree runs ago on January 31. Mean-while, Sydney trainers have ignored

tomorrow night's Australian Cup heatsat Melbourne's The Meadows butNSW-owned Perfect Fancy should win.

Now trained by Darren McDonald inMelbourne, he was second to HighEarner in last week's Macro MeatsTemlee and is perfectly drawn in boxeight in heat six of the Cup. He onlyneeds a clear run to be in tomorrowweek's $150,000-to the-winner final.

He was runner-up to Kilty Lad in theAdelaide Cup on January 20 andchased High Earner all the way at TheMeadows last week.

QUICK LESSONS AT BULLISome very smartyoungsters have been learning theircraft at BuIli, not the least Christine Oldfield's RockIsland Line and Kristy Sultana's Sam's Conquest. Bothare unbeaten and scored impressively at the spaciouscircuit on Monday in smart times on a slow surface.Rock Island Line registered 22.75s over 400m, somefive lengths slower than his winning time from previ-ous week. Bulli's racing surface was "turned over"after the February 14 meeting and failed to recover inseven days. Punters deserve better.

He now appearscertain to finish his racing in the care of owner-trainerPeter Phillips, which is a pity- not that Phillips won'twin a brace of races with the son of Big Daddy Cool.Damek is a genuine star and might never be rated ashighly as he deserved to be across Bass Straight.

The dog was sent to little-known Tasmanian trainer DebbieCannan.

She did an extra-ordinary job with St Pierre, winning theDevonport Cup final with the dog on January 18, and takingout a heat of Launceston Cup on February 7.

Last night's Group 1 cup heat win was a double celebrationfor Nutt as St Pierre's dam. Paris St Germain. whelped sevenpuppies on Friday to Collision.

Dismay to joyas Gwen's aWenty winnerDULGUIGAN trainer John Dart couldhave been forgiven for thinking he waswasting his time taking Hillcrest Gwen toSydney for last week's Wentworth ParkFree-For-All.

He had bypassed the nearer Albion Parkcircuit in Brisbane to "dodge" in-formtrainer Reg Kay's star-studded team.

At Wenty, the North Coast trainer wasdismayed to find Hillcrest Gwen, who hadnot won in Sydney, had to race dualNowra record holder More Space and DidI Entertain, successful in 23 WP races.

But the 20-hour round trip from nearMurwillumbah was "a breeze' afterHillcrest Gwen upset the big names.

"She had been racing well but ran intoReg Kay's National Derby winner EliteBlue Size at Albion Park on February 10and chased home Outa Credit, another ofhis team, there on January 27," Dart said.

"She was a bit unlucky behind OutaCredit so I thought I'd sneak down toSydney and avoid Reg.

"At her only previous Wenty runHillcrest Gwen, usually a good beginner, bungled the start and finished seventh."

Hillcrest Gwen was third away but

displayed extraordinary speed to racebetween leaders Snowsill and MoreSpace before dashing clear throughthe catching pen.

Dart's run continued at Lismore onTuesday when Moet won by 13 lengthsin the fastest 420m time of the nightremarkable for a 20-month-old maiden.

Glenda and John Dart train HillcrestGwen for Charlie Northfield, who wonlast week's Armidale Country Challengewith Kingsbrae Sam.

Northfield had three runners in theArmidale sprint, including Proper Lucy, who had taken out the WauchopeCountry Challenge.

Proper Lucy now heads the Challengeseries pointscore from Dubbo'sKouparitsas and Temora-trainedPindari Bale.

Top scorer after the 21-race seriescollects $12,500.

FUTURE Fund, the veteran who brokedown when making the pace in a heat ofthe Armidale Challenge, may race again.

Aberdeen trainer John Lawson said thisweek: "He tore groin muscles but myveterinary surgeon says the injury can

be repaired."Future Fund turned five in November

but if he recovers well I will put him backinto work as he loves to run.

"He has won 36 races from over 100starts but would have been even better hadhe not been such a wide runner.

"His favourite track is Armidale but healso won two Cup finals at Broken Hill, adrive of 14 hours each way for us."

Lawson, 55, had a spinal disorder as ateenager and his family was advised heneeded to do a lot of walking to avoidbeing later confined to a wheelchair.

"Tom Binskin, whose brother Jack andnephew John were famous harness racingtrainers, was a family friend and when Iwas 14 he gave me a greyhound, forcingme to exercise," Lawson said.

"I have had greyhounds ever since."HIGH Ball, the Lochinvar-trained dog

who raced erratically before a sizzling29.74 win at The Gardens on February 16,will do his future racing in New Zealand.

He could prove a sensation there, especially over longer distances than the515m The Gardens trip.
