My owartic e bare y mentioned youth cu ture but rather focused on the shi ts in thetechnical base of production and its effect on the nature of the wor force4 and I wou d emphasize here, agains Hec man s rather static way of dealing withese matters, that I conceived of this shi in not as an accomplishedfact, something that only o tains in the thic skul s of Marxist positivists. The

    purpose of this article was to attempt an exp anation for the massiverad calization of col ege students, witnessed in the last ten years, raditionallconceived by bourgeois socio ogists asmidd because of their fin n istatus. While do not claim in any way to have sett ed this matter,thin itrather ironic that all ec man can do against me is quote a statistic indicatingthat the absolute size of the b ue col ar wor force has not declined ut only irelative size this due to the brea up of sma l farms, etc His own evidence itself evidence against him the point being that the industrial wor ing class, asblue co lar wor ers, has stopped expanding relative to the growth of other

    sectors. Thus, it is incu bent upon us to deal with these other sectors and try todetermine the signi cance of these s i s. That Hec man s paper offers absolutely no insig t into the present situation specif cally, he politicaactivity of t e college youth in the 60 s and 70 s, but can only condemn theyouth culture as re ti n ry because record sales lead to net gain and collegestudents do not have nancial burdens, is the best argument that he can presentagainst himself. Marxism refuses to attain the ingdom of heaven at the expenseof osing the whole world. Hec man s theological purity would lead us to losboth the world and the ingdom of heaven because it is theology and at thesame time painfu ly mundane
