The Messenger

One of our mission priorities (see the May, 2014 Messenger) is hospitality

- and how to make people feel welcome without feeling “pushy.” This sum-

mer, the Christian Life Committee will be hosting a Radical Hospitality

Sunday on August 3 as we explore what it means to offer hospitality to the

stranger – and to one another, new member or old. The committee is plan-

ning for this to be an enjoyable experience as well as a time of learning, and

we hope you’ll join us for worship and fellowship that Sunday.

Being a welcoming community is not a new thing for this congrega-

tion - it’s been an important aspect of ministry even before we became a

Reconciling in Christ congregation. Welcoming people - ALL people – is

part of what it means to be a Christian community: it is in our DNA, or

should be. Christ welcomed all, therefore it’s really not optional for us as

Christians.

So, how do we offer hospitality that is authentic and meaningful –

and is more than simply saying “good morning” and wondering what else we

can say or do to truly makes someone feel welcomed? That’s what we’ll ex-

plore on Radical Hospitality Sunday. Why is it called “Radical?” Be-

cause if we follow Christ’s example of hospitality, we’ll find that welcoming

everyone to the love of God can be risky behavior: who knows, it may even

end up changing us!

Blessings to you in these summer days. May this season offer some

renewal and refreshment to your whole person: body, mind, and spirit.

The radical peace and welcome of Christ be with you,

Pastor Julie

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 1 Peter 4:10

Over the next year we’ll be sharing information about our future use of rain

gardens as part of our landscaping. Any major landscaping work will not

be done this year, as we focus on completing other facility renovations.

Financial Gifts – Thank you to everyone for your continued financial sup-

port of St. Peder’s day-to-day ministry as well as Generation-to-Generation

(G2G). As reported a few months ago, we had learned that some of our

basic electrical and mechanical systems at St. Peder's are in need of updat-

ing before we can move ahead with the next phase of G2G - kitchen renova-

tion. We continue to clarify the costs of these items and believe that we are

within a few weeks of having competitive bids. While this process had tak-

en longer than first expected, those involved are taking a very thorough and

thoughtful approach – so that we make the best use of your financial gifts.

Time and Talents – Through your gifts of time, and the sharing of your ex-

pertise, insight, imagination and labor, you make St. Peder’s ministry

stronger and more relevant within the community. Thank you to all who

completed the time and talents survey late last year. Several of the commit-

tees have already engaged with new volunteers, some committees are still

in the process of making those connections. If you did not complete a sur-

vey, or you have new ideas about how you would like to get involved, please

contact Pastor Julie.

Wishing you God’s peace and the time to enjoy the splendor of our long-

awaited spring!

Judy Hogan

Making Good Use of Our Gifts

Each of us has many gifts. By God’s grace we receive gifts, and in turn, as an

expression of Christ’s love we share our gifts with others. At St. Peder’s we

are very mindful of our responsibility to make good use of these gifts.

The gift of our natural resources - A few years ago our Lenten journey ex-

plored the subject of Living Water. During Wednesday night services we

learned that, while 70% of the earth is covered in water, less than 2% is

fresh water. And, the World Health Organization estimates that less than

1% of all fresh water is available for direct human use. From these facts it is

easy to see that the way we treat our local water supply is an important part

of being good stewards. Over the last year the Property and Energy Commit-

tee has researched ways for St. Peder’s to make better use of our rain water

– and in so doing, place less run-off into our river.

LIBRARY MATTERS:

St. PEDER’S GREATEST

GENERATION

Two St. Peder’s authors have documented personal accounts of their World War II

military service to our nation. Fortunately, our library has a copy of each of their

stories:

MINNESOTA’S GREATEST GENERATION narrated by the late Laurice Austin as

interviewed by our own Doug Bekke, an oral history project of the Minnesota His-

torical Society. It tells of the steps of Laurie’s fighter pilot training and his adven-

ture against the Japanese air fighters over China and Burma where he was once

forced to land on a rice paddy, was rescued by Chinese soldiers and finally returned

on his own through the jungle to his base. Laurie never thought of it as an adven-

ture but only as a job that had to be done.

COBBERS OF WORLD WAR II, memoirs of seventeen WWII veterans collected

and edited by Jim Hofrenning along with his own story of service in the Philippines

and Japan before and after the dropping of the atom bomb. “Cobbers” refers to

these servicemens’ connection to Concordia College.

On this Memorial Day, the bravery and sacrifice of these vanishing servicemen and

others yet among us should never be forgotten

SUMMER BOOK “STUDY”

PASTRIX: CRANKY, BEAUTIFUL FAITH

OF A SINNER AND SAINT BY: NADIA BOLZ-WEBER

Please join Sarah Grans in a different type of book study this summer. How

is it different? We will read our book, and gather at the end of summer and

have a group discussion about the book. Pastix is a collection of stories from

Nadia’s journey of faith. It is her story, it is her faith, and it is raw and hon-

est. Take a chance this summer and learn more about who she is as a pastor

and how she came to be the pastor at House for All Saints and Sinner in

Denver Colorado.

Pastrix will be available to check out in the library. There will be a sign up

on the table outside the fellowship hall for those interested in being part of

this book study. Date for the discussion will be chose by those who are read-

ing the book in late July or August. Talk with Sarah Grans if you have ques-

tions.

As the companion synod to the Lutheran

Church of Christ in Nigeria, the Minneapolis Area

Synod has been asked to pray for nearly 300 girls

who were abducted in May – and for their families.

In addition to praying for all the girls, each congrega-

tion was given the name of one particular girl to re-

member in prayer. Awagana Musa is the girl we’ll

continue to pray for in worship - and you’re invited

to remember her in your own prayers. It’s also an

excellent opportunity to invite your children to pray

for another child, that she may be returned safe to

her home and family.

In-Kind Gifts for the WELCA Triennial Gathering

Prayers are invited for the participants and the presenters, that the experience may

strengthen and challenge them in their faith walks. Continuing a long-standing tradi-

tion, when women and girls attend the Triennial Gathering, they are invited to bring

along in-kind gifts. In-kind gifts will include quilt kits (fabric and thread), gift cards,

phone cards, hygiene items, socks, bras and underwear. Items will be distributed to

local charities in Charlotte. More details about in-kind gifts can be found here:

www.welcatg.org/filebin/PDF/InKindGifts.pdf.

Sue Schnickel will be attending this summer, and is happy to bring in-kind gifts to the

gathering. There is a box outside the fellowship hall to collect donations.

Bring Back Our Girls

ST PEDER’S PRAYER CHAIN

We’re so thankful for St Peder’s prayer chain partners: you play an im-

portant role in the spiritual life of our faith community!

Anyone with a request for prayers can contact the church office (Sarah Z.), Pastor

Julie - by phone or email, or Delores Clementson (612/722-8502). You may also

contact Karen Vetsch if the others cannot be reached. Your prayer request will be

forwarded to the partners via email or by a phone tree.

If you’re not currently a part of the prayer chain, but would like to serve in

that ministry, just contact the church office. You may choose to receive prayer re-

quests via email - or by telephone. (If you receive prayer requests by phone, you’ll

be responsible for phoning the next person on the list.)

Thank you, Delores and Karen, for coordinating the Prayer Chain! We’re

grateful for your leadership.

DON’T WORSHIP AT ST PEDER’S ON JUNE 22… JOIN

US FOR A SUNDAY WITH OUR MISSION PARTNERS!

While we will have a service here at 9:00 on Sunday, June 22, we

hope you’ll consider joining our Mission Partners for worship instead at Mt

Olivet Lutheran Church in Plymouth - 12235 Old Rockford Road –

at 10:30 a.m. with a free picnic lunch to follow! If the weather allows,

we’ll be worshiping outside on their lovely grounds. Trinity Lutheran/

Riverside, Mt Olivet, Nokomis Heights, and St Peder’s are pleased as Trinity

Mission Partners to offer this opportunity for shared worship and fellowship.

Mark your calendars and make worship an adventure on June 22!

YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS THIS MOVIE…

(AND SOME CONVERSATION AND DESSERT!)

Join Pastor Julie on Saturday evening, June 21,

from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. as we view this year’s

Academy Award winning short documentary, The

Lady in Number 6. This 40-minute movie is about

the oldest living survivor of the Holocaust – and

how music saved her life. It’s a marvelous short

film - and inspiring! After we see it, we’ll have

some conversation and dessert together. Look for the sign-up sheet on the table out-

side the Fellowship Hall. You can certainly come without signing up, but this will

help us plan for dessert. Bring a friend, too!

When June, 2014 comes to a close, we’ll have only one year left of the G2G cam-

paign. The total campaign receipts through the end of April from all of you total

$227,227.00 This is approximately 75% of our goal.

Since this campaign began, we’ve lost

some of the generation that had the

foresight and courage it took to

move to this site over 50 years

ago. While I’m saddened by this, I

remain thankful for their wisdom

and foresight.

As chair of the G2G Committee, I’d

like to take this opportunity to reach

out to any new members of St. Peders and ask for their help to complete the cam-

paign to improve our facilities so that we can fulfill and expand our mission. This

campaign was about preparing our facilities for future generations and future mis-

sions. Please see any member of St. Peder’s Council or Pastor Julie for information

on how you can contribute to the successful conclusion of the campaign.

The next step in our facility improvements is the kitchen update. A lot of effort has

gone into exploring our options and figuring out the best way to proceed. We’ve

had some surprises regarding how outdated our infrastructure has become and the

costs of getting up to date, but the work is continuing and progress is being made. I

know we are all anxious to see the kitchen project completed this year.

We’ve also kept up with the outreach part of the campaign. When the bookkeeping

is done, we’ll have shared more than $20,000 with our mission partners at Trinity

Lutheran/Riverside and our Nigerian Partner Synod.

So, as a final plea, please remain faithful in your pledges through the balance of the

campaign: feel free to join in the effort to improve and expand our facilities: and

finally, thanks again for all your prayers, efforts, and contributions over the past 24

months.

Respectfully—Craig Rocheleau

QUILTS AND CARE-KITS GIVEN TO LUTHERAN WORLD

RELIEF

On May 11, we blessed 19 quilts and 35 personal care-kits that were delivered

to the Lutheran World Relief center here in the Twin Cities. From there, the quilts

and kits are sent around the world, to places where people are most in need of

warmth and shelter, and personal hygiene items. Thank you to our Wednesday

morning quilters - and to all who responded to Shepherding Group 1’s invitation to

participate in the care-kits project: you’ve put loving your neighbor to work in a

meaningful way!

For the LORD is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever, and God’s faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 100.5
