THOM YORKE Born: 07/10/68 (lead vocals, guitar) Thom met the rest of the band at Abingdon School,
near Oxford. First forming to learn how to play, with no "second thoughts on image or musical style,
they called themselves On A Friday. Thom vjjent on to Exeter University to study English
and Art, Where he was reckoned to be one of the best DJs*
Fie was also a member of a techno band, Flickeriioise.
On A Friday would meet up during summer holidays until summer 1991 when Thom was reunited for good with Ed, Phil, Jonny and Colin.
On the strength of their demos, the newly-named Radiohead (after a Talking Pleads song) were signed to Parlophone^ by the end of 1991.
Thom became well-known for the lyrics he sings and writes, especially in Creep, from 1992 and Karrha Police.
In 1995, the band played a triumphant homecoming at the Oxford Apollo, a venue Thom had once been ejected from!
Thom sang a duet on the Drugstore album, and made a few appearances on their tour. Radiohead were in demand, and the members of the band continue to turn up on various collaborations, including film soundtracks, such as Velvet Goldmine.
In late 1998, Thom had a case of writer’s block. He said: “Every time I picked up a guitar I just got the horrors.
“I was sinking down and down”. Thanks to the Warp record label
he took a liking to whilst in Uni, Thom got back on track.
He bought their back catalogue and was inspired by the structures in the music, bringing out the same emotions as guitar music did.
And the rest, as they say, is history.

(drums) SUPPORTER of The Samaritans campaign to help young people, Phil is the quiet man of the band.
Phil was the last member to join Radiohead - replacing the drum machine!
The initial goal was just to get a record¬ ing contract, and take it from there!
By mid 1993 they were a highly-rated band in the US, reaching No.1 with Creep on KROQ, LA, which was the USA’s most influential alternative radio station.
“Creep was a huge success in the US,” he said. “The music scene in the States is huge and the amount of work needed to gain recognition over there is massive,
“Throughout our career we’ve been very lucky. There has been a lot of goodwill shown towards us but in between The Bends and OK Computer success weighed heavily on the band.”
“We’ve never really tried to reproduce an OK Computer or a Bends. We’ve always tried to move on and take a new approach. Amnesiac took about a year and a half to complete and at times it was quite a laborious process,”
“We re-evaluated what we wanted to do on this album and it was really the first time we recorded in an unrehearsed manner.”
“The gig at South Park means an awful lot to us. It’s a great location and we’re looking forward to playing in front of our fans, families and friends.”
05/11/71 (guitar, piano) onny left college after a month to go on tour with Radiohead, taking his text books with him.
At first he could only play harmonica, but whilst at uni, studying Psychology, he learnt the keyboard and guitar.
Since childhood, Jonny has been obsessed with the Ondes Martenot instrument, a combination of a key¬ board, a ribbon and a ring. The French composer Messiaen used it, and it can also be heard in the Star Trek theme. Jonny used this instrument in Kid A, the fourth album, which was nominated for four Grammy awards.
In the early days, Radiohead became a live legend, with unpredictability. Jonny often feels nervous on stage,
and has cut his hands with a small practice amp during gigs - at around the same time, Thom broke his toe after kicking his guitar on stage!
In 1996, Jonny played on tracks for the Bryan Ferry album - a real contrast to the music he plays with Radiohead.
The youngest Greenwood is very impatient, and he regrets the amount of time spent on the album Kid A, claiming if he were in charge, four albums would have been made in that time!
He says about the new album, Amnesiac, “It’s the first album that I’ve been happy listening to after we’ve finished it”.

IIVIHOIIIVR PROFIIJvS: ED 0 MUM & GOUN (.WDOOD
ED O’BRIEN. Bom: 15/04/68 (guitar, backing vocals) ONCE voted the most eligible man
in Oxford when he worked as a barman at Browns restaurant.
Ed, who is 6ft 5in tall studied econom¬ ics at Manchester University, which has obviously helped him a great deal in Radiohead!
He makes as much contribution to the band’s website, www.radiohead.com as he can, even placing a diary there dur¬ ing 1999.
This kept fans up to date while Kid A was being recorded, and gave them an insight into the world of Radiohead, whose motto is “always expect the unexpected”, when in the studio.
Ed believes the band should always have something to aim for - that way they can keep on track and continue producing the quality music their almost cult fans know and love.
Ed found himself on a fairly recent anti-World Trade Organisation march in Whitehall, his first demo since his stu¬ dent days.
He’s on record as saying he wishes the band could be more useful, and they tried to make a small statement of protest by not using logos on their tents in a recent tour. So, no product place¬ ment in the next Hollywood blockbuster for an Amnesiac track then!
COLIN GREENWOOD Bom: 26/06/69 (bass) One fifth of the eccentric Radiohead,
and one half of the affectionately known “Greenwood Sisters”, Colin
is the older of the Greenwood brothers, and along with Thom, was a founder member of the band.
Found out recently to have the messiest room on tour, the rest of the ever-so-tidy band forgive him as he writes most of the band’s songs.
He studied English at Cambridge University before joining the band, and also worked at an Our Price store.
He never thought that one day he would be making records, rather than selling them.
He says about Kid A, “This has a lot of blank space around the songs which is something we haven’t done before”.
It is conceived as being a unitary piece of work, and very different to previous albums. Kid A was a landmark in the group’s careers, reputedly nearly causing the band to split.
There were big arguments in the Radiohead camp over whether they should put all 23 tracks they had recorded for Kid A on one album, or whittle them down.
Eventually it was decided to split the tracks, with the remaining ones on the fifth album, Amnesiac.

AS you sit down (or stand) to watch the cool band on stage
that is Radiohead, now seems the right time to remind you of their pre¬ vious publicity pictures - when they were young - and had lots more hair! Never ones to court
media attention, the band have come a long way from the days of Creep and The Bends. The current single
Pyramid Song, from Amnesiac, is their first single since No Surprises, which reached No 4 in 1998. There were no singles from the album
Kid A - radio stations were invited to play what they like! The pictures below
have been released in conjunction with the release of Kid A last year and Amnesiac.

Caught by tha Another Oxford band who couldn't

police. In It For The Money was their second album, which went platinum. The much anticipated third album,
simply named Supergrass, was released by Parlophone in 1999. Recorded at Sawmill studios in
Cornwall, it featured more vocals from bassist Mick, and moved away from straight guitar rock.
The band played a big part in MTV’s Five Night Stand festival that year, with reviewers such as the Evening Standard commenting, “Right now Supergrass are the one band we can export with confidence”.
Watch the stage today to see exact¬ ly how far they have come in the new millennium.
SUPERGRASS are Gaz Coombes on guitar/lead vocals, Danny Goffey on drums/vocals, Mick
Quinn on bass/vocals and low pro¬ file member, Rob Coombes on key¬ boards.
Formed in 1993 when Gaz was at Wheatley Park school near Oxford, the group, originally known as The Jennifers, burst onto the local music scene in 1995. They had a massive hit with the
summer anthem, Alright, from their first album, I Should Coco.
Previous to this were a few lesser- known hits, such as Caught By The Fuzz (1994) which described a young experience with drugs and the

Singer, songwriter and gui¬ tarist, Beck Hansen, who was born in July 1970, start¬
ed to really kick off his career in LA. As a teenager he learnt to play
an acoustic guitar, and he was initially inspired by American folk music and Delta Blues. After moving back to LA from
New York, Beck performed in bars and at parties, often between sets by his friends’ bands. In 1991, he met then- fledgling hip-hop producer Karl Stephenson, and they began recording material that was later used for his album Mellow Gold, in 1994. This took four weeks to com¬
plete, as it was basically re- recordings of the original demos. It reached no.13 on the Billboard album chart.
Mellow Gold was the first album with record company DGC, as ini¬ tially Beck had declined to sign with anyone. Altogether so far, Beck has
released eight albums, of which Odelay is arguably the most pop¬ ular with fans.
It is a collection of songs from ongoing recording sessions over a two year period, and produced
Back
Beck by himself and the Dust Brothers, it proved a big hit when it was released in 1996. Beck has continued to keep up
his popularity and is a highly respected star in the UK too, with plenty of nominations for Brits and other awards.

Humph will still swing it BORN In May 1921, British jazz musi¬
cian Humphrey Lyttelton is multi¬ talented - a trumpet player, band
leader, composer, broadcaster, author and cartoonist.
He’s also proved that he can swing with the times by being featured on the Life In A Glasshouse track from Radiohead’s new album Amnesiac. The unlikely pairing occurred after guitarist Jonny Greenwood wrote to Humph, who is one of his personal heroes and led to Humph’s scheduled appearance here today.
It’s a long way from his school years at Eton, where his father was a well-known house master. But his musical talents shone through early when Humphrey formed a small ^ ^ band in 1948.
It expanded to an octet in t the ‘50s, touring the USA in 1 - 1959. Also around the same time, he hosted jazz ijfl shows for the BBC, going on to have his own radio show, Best of Jazz.
He was publicised W a for his unique per- sHpiM ceptions about the WL 3 innovations of the Wr. \ greatest jazz musi¬ cians, as he had a musician’s point of view and was , ; { < \ full of love for i*\S music. The 80-year-old jazz legend due on stage today throughout his lengthy career, are: Louis Armstrong, Bud Freeman, Eddie Condon, Buck Clayton, Helen Shapiro and trombonist Pete Strange.
Humph and his band have also per¬ formed with jazz singers Lillian Boutte and Stacey Kent.
A popular song with fans of Lyttelton’s music is his version of When The Saints Go Marching In and his biggest hit was
| Bad Penny Blues, which spent six 1 weeks in the charts back in 1956.
In April 2001 he appeared on Michael Parkinson’s BBC Radio 2
Sunday show and talked at length about I’m Sorry I

years. ^ | Praise heaped on
