PED Analysis Summary

Program Completion Rate

Defined as the number of students who complete the program within 150% of stated program length. Program Benchmark: 75% PCR

Year Number of Student that Began Program

Number of Students that Completed Program

Completion Rate %

2015 38 30 79%

2014 37 19 51%

2013 31 28 90%

2012 29 19 65%

2011 35 27 77%

Totals 170 123 72% Narrative: Analysis of reasons for attrition- Benchmark of 75% was met. Although benchmark was met, faculty analyzed and discussed reason for the 21% attrition.

Reason 1) The program lost 3 of the 4 students who were dropped for academic reasons during the first 16 week semester (Fall 2013) of the program. This semester is when the

students begin to experience a full load of didactic courses as well as clinical courses. Faculty teaching the courses did not identify any specific reason for lack of student success

other than the student did not meet the course measurable objectives; for some, even after remediation efforts. During our discussion, program faculty discussed the fact that

the students who failed out of courses were academically weak and not at the academic level necessary to handle or manage the rigor of the program. Program admission is on

a first come first served basis with no minimum GPA requirements to enter the program. This open entry process does not allow for pre-screening of students to determine if

they are academically ready to enter the program and succeed in course work. The program’s admission process is in line with the practices of the college and cannot be

modified to prescreen students. For that reason, the program cannot control the students that enroll in the program.

The fourth student dropped for academic reasons was dropped in the spring semester of the first year. Faculty noted that all students who were dropped for academic reasons

were dropped in the first year. Upon review of the class of 2014 data, 9 of the 10 students dropped for academic reasons were also dropped in the first year. The program would

like to investigate this trend further.

Reason 2) The program’s overall student drop rate for personal reasons was 25% (2 out of the 8 students dropped). Both students were dropped for violating course attendance

policies due to outside obligations. In both cases, the outside obligation was that the student had to continue working and that obligation interfered with

course attendance. The program understands that some students must continue to work while enrolled in the program; however, being on time to class and

being present are important for successful achievement. Prior to program admission, students are informed of the commitment required to succeed in the

program and students are advised not to work if possible. Although students are warned every year, the program cannot control if students actually listen to

our advice.

Reason 3) The program’s overall student drop rate for ethical reasons was 25% (2 out of the 8 students dropped). Both students were caught cheating in

didactic courses.

Action Plan:

The program will continue working with the counseling department to better inform prospective students of the commitment required before they are admitted to

the program.

During program orientation, more emphasis will continue being placed on communicating to students about the commitment and time required to succeed in this

rigorous program. The orientation facilitator will show program completion data to students and share the reasons for attrition. The goal is to try to get students to

really understand the commitment necessary to succeed in the program and that outside obligations could impede on their success.

Before the last day to withdraw from the summer course, faculty teaching the summer course, or the department chair, will meet with students who have come

forward with personal issues. The goal will be to offer the student support if possible or direct the student to college support services.

Free tutoring and open lab services will continue to be available to all program students through Title V funding (2-3 weeknights & on weekends).

Students struggling and remediating in Rad 61B will be required to seek tutoring services as part of their remediation plan.

The program will monitor if modification of program prerequisites has an effect on program attrition. Physics I as a science pre-requisite was added for the class

beginning summer 2016.

The program will continue recommending the following courses to current & prospective students to assist them in developing more effective study skills: COUN 2,

STDY 80 and STDY 85A. The recommendation will be made on the program’s website and the program’s information packet. Counselors also make this

recommendation to prospective students.

The program will refer students to the Health Careers Resource Center (HCRC) and the Technology and Health Careers Resource Center (TERC). Resources available at

the centers include a supportive learning environment, free tutoring services, computers, and medical tools/equipment that can be used to practice skills.

The program will collect additional data to determine if the program is viewed by students as less rigorous during the second year or if the students are just better

prepared by the time they reach the second year of the program. The reasons why should also be identified. This type of qualitative data can be collected by

interviewing or surveying current program students.

o If the trend of losing the majority (or all) of students for academic reasons during the first year continues, the program will investigate if additional support

services could be offered, the type of services, and the timing of services. This type of qualitative data can be collected by interviewing or surveying current

program students or students who have been dropped.

Data regarding 2015 program completion rates was shared with communities of interest during the Advisory Committee Meeting held on March 23, 2016 (see meeting

minutes attached). The above action plan was developed in collaboration with input from communities of interest. In 2014, similar steps were part of the 2014 action

plan and were implemented when the program completion rate of the class of 2014 was 51%. The action plan was implemented immediately. The 2015 program

completion rate increased to 79%. Further data will need to be collected to determine if the actions of the 2014 were the only factors that caused the increased

program completion rate.

o Will continue to monitor program completion rate.

o To date, survey data collected from program students in Spring 2014 & Spring 2015 indicates utilization of the open lab and program tutors funded by Title V

is contributing to student success.

2015 Summary Results

100% of the students surveyed reported that the open‐lab helped them prepare for their tests.

90% of the students agreed that they would have been less successful in the course without the tutors.

The number of students utilizing the open lab hours increased from Fall to Spring.

The number of visits made by students to the lab increased from Fall to Spring.

o The program director will organize a meeting and/or survey with 2016 program graduates to collect additional quantitative & qualitative data that may help

the program determine if the actions led to the success of the students or if the increased program completion rate was not related to the 2014 or 2015

action plans.

Credentialing Examination Pass Rate Defined as the number of graduates who pass, on first attempt, the exam compared with the number of graduates who took the exam within 6 months of graduation. Program Benchmark: Minimum 5 year average of 75%

Year Number of Graduates that took Exam

Number of Graduates that passed exam

Pass Rate %

2015 28 25 89%

2014 18 16 89%

2013 24 20 83%

2012 17 17 100%

2011 27 25 93%

Totals 114 103 90% Narrative: Analysis of credentialing exam pass rate. Although the 5 year average benchmark of 75% has been met, the program would like to improve graduate pass rates to well above national average. The program is focusing on improving scores in all sections; however, of greatest concern is section C of the ARRT exam.

Program pass rates have been above national average for past 5 years except in 2013.

In 2015, program mean sections scores were .1 above national average in sections A & B.

In 2015, program mean section scores were .1 below national average in sections D & E and .3 below national average in section C.

Steps have been taken to improve scores in section C as this has been an area in which program students have scored below national average for 5 consecutive years. Below are steps that the program has taken in the past 7 months.

o The programs Digital Imaging course (RAD 32) was moved to later in curriculum sequence. Originally the course was offered in the Winter semester of the student’s first year in the program. The course has been moved to the second Winter semester of the program. This later offering allows students to complete other theory courses prior to completing RAD63 which should help provide additional foundational knowledge in theory prior to enrolling in RAD32.

o The program purchased additional learning resources in digital imaging- ASRT Essentials of Digital Imaging. The goal is to add this

additional resource into the RAD32 and RAD64 courses as an instructional tool. The program will ensure that 2016 graduates have access to the program prior to graduation. Program officials will evaluate if the program made students feel better prepared for the ARRT exam as a result of the program. Collection of this data will be accomplished through surveys and/or interviews. The ASRT program includes the following modules:

Module 1 – Fundamentals Module 2 – Processing Module 3 – Display Module 4 – Image Analysis Module 5 – PACS Module 6 – Dose Reduction and Patient Safety Module 7 – Quality

o The course content in RAD64, the program’s review course, is being reorganized and more emphasis is being placed on digital content. Again, the new ASRT learning modules will be integrated into this course.

o The instructor for course RAD62A is reviewing the digital content in the four chapters of the program’s Theory textbook (Bontrager). During the 4 year review process of program courses, RAD62A will be modified to remove the majority of film/screen content and by adding some foundational digital content. RAD62A is completed prior to RAD32. RAD32 is completed prior to RAD64. Together, program courses will provide students with additional learning opportunities in digital imaging than what is currently offered. The goal is to include digital content earlier in the program and continue building on that knowledge as the student progresses through the program.

No further interventions will be made at this time. Will continue to monitor ARRT credentialing exam rates and collect data to evaluate student’s level of preparation for the ARRT exam.

Job Placement Rate Defined as the number of graduates employed (w/I 12 months of graduation) in the radiologic sciences compared to the number of graduates actively seeking employment in the radiologic sciences. Program Benchmark: Minimum 5 year average of 75%

Year Number of Graduates Actively Seeking Employment

Totals 111 95 86% Narrative: Analysis of job placement rate. Although the 5 year average benchmark of 75% has been met, the program would like to improve job placement rates.

Program officials note that the majority of the Class of 2015 students are currently working indicating that the job placement rate may be higher when measured in August 2016.

Obtaining a high response rate from surveys used to track job placement rate is a challenge. The return rate on student surveys one year after program graduation continues to be a problem. Will continue using various forms of communication to track alumni and obtain the survey data needed to report accurate job placement rates.

Many students are hired at the sites where they trained. Students need to understand that they are responsible for maintaining a positive relationship with clinical staff while training and after they have left the facility. Networking is very important. Often students forget that while they are training they are being evaluated as a potential employee. Making a good impression during training is important.

Many employers have contacted faculty directly to seek graduates that we would directly recommend for open positions. This recruitment practice includes employers seeking graduates who are willing to cross train new graduates into advanced modalities. Great news! Students need to maintain contact with program faculty and communicate to faculty if they are still looking for a job. No Class of 2015 students have contacted faculty asking for help in finding work.

The program uses Facebook to communicate with alumni about job openings. Registering for FB is recommended as faculty post jobs on a regular basis.

The program provides employment links on the program webpage. This provides students and alumni with access to current job openings.

Program officials discussed ideas to help improve this rate. Will reiterate to students that the college offers free career placement services to alumni and that they should join our FB page and check our webpage if they would like to view current job openings. Will also stress the importance of relationship building and networking while enrolled as a student.

Aside from the steps already taken, the program cannot control the job market. We can control the number of students admitted to the program if the job placement rate falls below the benchmark and continues as a trend. At this time, that is not an issue.

Will continue to monitor job placement rate

Narrative: Analysis of graduate satisfaction survey. Although graduates report they are 93% satisfied with the program, the program would like to find out what improvements can be made to reverse the slight downward trend since 2013.

Upon review of the measurement tool, the program director determined the survey format and questions could be improved to collect more useful data that will help identify areas for improvement. The new survey will be implemented with the Class of 2016.

The program does not have a benchmark established. A benchmark of Minimum 5 year average of 90% was established during our analysis. Will add the benchmark to the Program Assessment Plan.

Based on data and comments from the Class of 2015, repeated strengths included the following: o Professor are well liked, accessible, & knowledgeable o Well organized program o Positive learning environment

Based on data and comments from the Class of 2015, repeated weaknesses included the following: o Strict on policies- Faculty agree this is not a weakness o Review course (RAD64) was weak
