PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Dear ARIN Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 ARIN Convention, Leaders in Patient Care, in Washington, D.C. This should be an exciting, interdisciplinary approach, to culminate our 35th anniversary year.

What’s new this year? The 2017 ARIN Convention will be hosting a simulation workshop on airway management. In addition, we will have a vendor sponsored lunch and learn session. This year, the convention is being offered in two formats, live at the hotel, and via the archived podcasts after convention. Education has never been so easy or so accessible!

The ARIN Imaging Nurse Review Course, taught by our Master Faculty will be held on site on March 3rd and March 4th, with the Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN®) exam being offered on March 8th. There is an outstanding agenda of presentations during the three and one half days of convention to provide Radiology Nurses with the knowledge of resources to deliver safe quality patient care in the imaging environment. The SIR opening reception will be held at the hotel on Saturday night and all registered attendees are invited to attend.

On Sunday, convention opening day, we continue our yearly AVIR collaboration with a full day of combined education for technologists and nurses. The day will end with The Soiree, at Capitol View at 400 located at 444 N Capitol St NW, Washington, DC 20001. Transportation has been arranged for all attendees to and from the event. As in past years, AVIR and ARIN members will have the opportunity to socialize, build friendships, network all while enjoying delicious food stations and drinks. This event is part of your registration and I look forward to sharing a drink learning about you and your passion for the profession.

On Monday, the fourth annual Joanna Po Lecture Series will start the day. Dedicated to one of our founding leaders in radiology nursing, we are honored to have Karen L Green MHA, BSN, RN,

CRN, give this year’s presentation. Monday night, there will be a celebratory welcome reception and Town Meeting for all ARIN members attending convention. This is a great opportunity to network with other members of ARIN, explore volunteer opportunities, ARIN store, and bid at the Silent Auction, visit committee tables, and enjoy light hors d-oeuvres and a cash bar before exploring Washington, DC for dinner, shopping, or other adventures.

The “SIR Expo” located at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, connected directly to the Marriott Marquis Hotel offers convention attendees an opportunity to visit with corporate partners exploring the latest in devices, products, and services and observe demonstrations. Use your ARIN Calling Card when visiting the booths and take the opportunity to meet as many exhibitors as you can during the hours SIR expo is open and share that you are an ARIN member.

Please plan to attend the membership breakfast and business meeting on Tuesday morning. Awards and Scholarships will be presented, new officers installed, as well as time devoted for members to share and ask questions. As always, we will end the conference on Wednesday with a proactive lecture by our faithful friend and Radiology nurse supporter, Dr. Arturo Gonzalez.

Washington 2017 will be an exciting, memorable conference, the culmination of the 35th Annual ARIN Convention celebration, and the beginning of ARIN’s 36th year. Please join us for a celebration our many accomplishments in leading patient care and advancing our radiology nursing practice.

Sincerely,

Evelyn P. Wempe, MBA, MSN, ARNP, ACNP-BC, AOCNP, CRN ARIN President, 2016-2017

“Nurses possess a vast amount of knowledge, fueled by years of education and experience, in a variety of settings. But, what is our reason to be? Many nurses state they came into nursing because they ‘care about people’ and have a true ‘desire to help’. A large percentage of us are entering a new phase of life and nursing... caring for our families in a way very different from caring for our children. Parents and spouses who develop a chronic, debilitating illness require our love, understanding and care now more than ever.”

This session will cover aspects such as growing into the nurse we have become, recognizing and improving our coping skills, and understanding the importance of caring for ourselves’.

Karen Green has been active in ARIN for the past 14 years serving in a variety of positions. She currently serves as Chairperson for the Capnography Task Force focused on educating nurses on the benefit and use of Capnography.

Concurrent SessionCS3 Presenting and Designing a Podium Presentation - WorkshopCathy Brown, BScN, RN, CRNDI Nurse Navigator with Royal Alexandra HospitalLiberty Salons N/O/P (combined)

Giving an effective presentation is a basic skill all nurses must master. With little or no education in school or on the job on how to structure content, create visuals and deliver the lecture, many people avoid giving presentations. This workshop will lead individuals through the creation of a presentation in a stepwise manner and give attendees practical strategies for immediate use.

Cathy Brown earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with distinction from the University of Alberta. Since 2010 Cathy has been the Diagnostic Imaging Nurse Navigator, responsible for clinic consultations, patient education, and follow-up as well as organizing multidisciplinary rounds with gastroenterologists, urologists and thoracic surgeons. Cathy is the only Certified Radiology Nurse in Alberta and one of three in Canada.

Endo-leaks can be diagnosed via CT angiography, ultrasound grayscale, color Doppler or contrast-enhance MRI/MRA following endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms. Surveillance is typically performed at one and twelve months following the endovascular repair. Evidence of endo-leak by identifying contrast in the aneurysm or continued aneurysm growth requires further evaluation and management.

Dr. Richard has been nominated a champion of IR nurses for several years. He has practiced at University of Maryland since 2001, where he has started a clinic for uterine fibroid embolization and pelvic pain. He is a favorite among the IR nurses for his compassion and caring of his patients. POSTER PRESENTATIONS

1. Investigating the Role of the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Interventional RadiologyRosemary Patterson Harbuck, BSN, RN, CCRN

The author examines the breadth and depth of practice potential for the acute care nurse practi-tioner in interventional radiology, focusing on patient, nurse and system outcomes.

The field of interventional radiology continues to evolve, institutions are moving from episodic-fo-cused patient encounters to longitudinal care delivered on a continuum. Interventional oncology, where one patient may have multiple procedures within a treatment plan, requires close manage-ment and interdisciplinary collaboration. The role of the acute care nurse practitioner (ACNP) has grown in recent years across many acute care disciplines and can contribute to quality patient care in interventional radiology. Interventional radiology practices seeking to improve the patient experi-ence are using the nurse practitioner’s expertise; however, physicians and hospital leaders may not realize the extent the ACNP impacts this field.

2. Staff Radiation Exposure ReductionNicole Jensen, BSN, RN Clinical Resource Nurse

Purpose: To report how one institution reduced radiation exposure of Computed Tomography (CT) staff by reducing the amount of time spent in hands-on monitoring of the intravenous site during contrast media injection via power injector.

Methods: The team reviewed dosimeter readings for staff working directly in the CT suite monitor-ing the intravenous site for contrast media extravasation, and found the outside-of-apron readings close to the recommenced yearly threshold. With help from department Physicists and Radiolo-gists, in-depth radiation reduction education was provided to explain the importance of increasing the distance the staff stands from the gantry during imaging. The new standard of practice for monitoring the injection site was set at 20 seconds per patient, and the radiation exposure doses and early detection of contrast extravasations were measured for three months post implementa-tion.

Results: Preliminary findings show the amount of radiation exposure doses for staff was reduced without having an increase in contrast extravasation rates.

3. Risk for adverse reaction to iodinated contrast media: a validation study in BrazilBeatriz Juchem, RN, MSN, PhD

Content validation studies, through expert consensus, have been used to refine nursing taxonomies and qualify the nursing care in different areas. This study aimed to perform the content validation of the nursing diagnosis (ND) “Risk for adverse reaction to iodinated contrast media”, involving the diagnostic imaging specialty. It utilized the diagnostic content validation model of Fehring, obtaining the consensus of experts about each proposed item. The experts were 74 Brazilian physicians and registered nurses, with a minimal five years’ experience, caring for patients receiving iodinated con-trast media. The title and definition were validated with scores of 0,83 and 0,79, respectively. It pro-posed 28 risk factors, five validated as principal, 22 secondary and one not validated. The ND was validated with a total diagnosis content validation score 0,70. Insertion in the NANDA-I taxonomy II was evaluated by 41 registered nurses. The Domain 11 – Safety/protection was validated with score 0,84 and the suggestion to insert the ND in the Domain 11/Class 2 – Physical injury was validated with score 0,88. From the findings of the research it was suggested the ND revision, including title, definition, presentation of risk factors and reallocation of the ND in the Domains and Classes of the taxonomy. Such suggestions will contribute to a safe and qualified assistance and to the develop-ment of teaching and research in this field of knowledge

4. Development and Implementation of Patient Reported Outcomes in an Interventional Radiology-Oncology PracticeGina Schultz, RN, BSN Ablation Nurse

A process was established to identify patient outcomes in an ablation practice (focusing on kidney ablation) in a large radiology department.

With kidney ablation, patients experience expedited recovery and generally encounter less pain compared with traditional surgery. We could not find post-procedure outcomes objectively mea-sured in kidney ablation patients.

Collaboration with colleagues, in Health Science Research and Biostatistics, and nurses developed a series of questions to assess patient reported outcomes, focusing on pain, physical function and social activity. Using the National Institute of Health’s Patient Reported Outcome Measurement In-formation System (PROMIS) and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), baseline measurements are obtained prior to ablation. Outcomes are then measured at days one through seven and day 30 following the ablation.

Patient reported outcomes have allowed nurses to better define the recovery of renal ablation pa-tients. Regular outcome measurements provide an opportunity to anticipate patient recovery, includ-ing potential delayed complications. This same process can be expanded to include other ablation procedures and provide important pathways for care plan development in a unique care setting.

5. A Radiology Nurse Liaison Program: One key toward Patient SatisfactionKatherine Yedinak, RN, CRN, Master’s degree in management/organizational leadership, Assistant Director of Radiology

Procedures performed in Radiology are associated with a patient’s continuum of care, evaluating disease treatment and surgical outcomes, they may increase the stress of both patients and family members. A radiology nurse liaison can offer support, answer questions, and provide information during the procedural time, bridge the gap when delays occur and through communication help the patient and family manage stress producing a more positive experience for everyone. For one Illi-nois’ academic hospital, establishing a nurse liaison in radiology increased patient satisfaction scores.

The book is written with the bedside radiology nurse in mind. I like to keep is close to me while I work. The core curriculum is an excellent reference book for anyone taking the CRN® exam. Orientation Manual for Radiologic and Imaging Nursing (2015) Three Ring BinderMember $85.00 / Non-Member $ 95.00

Historically our radiology nurse colleagues walked into their respective imaging departments not fully understanding their new role or how to make it reality. Very few nurses had a formal in-troduction into radiology; rather, nurses began to apply our skills in this technology-dominated world as we identified the need. Entering radiology proved to be a challenge as we mastered a foreign language and gained an appreciation for the radiologists and technologists with whom we work. Over time, nurses began to compile their knowledge to pass onto new nurses; thus the formal orientation process was born.

Radiologic & Imaging Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice (2013)Co-published with the Association for Radiologic and Imaging Nursing ARIN and ANA Member $29.95 / Non-Member $39.95

Radiologic and Imaging Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice is a must-have title for radiologic and imaging nursing practitioners, educators, students, and other healthcare works directly involved in this area of practice. This new edition contains up-to-date information on this exciting and dynamic specialty that combines cutting- edge technology with the art and science of nursing. It builds upon the previously published Radiology Nursing: Scope & Standards of Practice (2007) by incorporating the broader practice environment that nurses working in this specialty are encountering in their nursing practice. It guides and supports the imaging APN’s practice from assessment and diagnosis through treatment and evaluation, with emphasis on maintaining a safe environment. The 16 standards are those by which all RNs in radiologic and imaging nursing are held accountable for in their practice. Each standard is measurable by a set of specific competencies that serve as evidence of minimal compliance with that standard.
