Dr. George W. Crane with Dr. Frigard
"Chiropractic is not a 'cure-all' and it should never be claimed as such, but it reaches successfully a larger number of so-called chronic disec1-ses than any other known mechanical method, and is so much superior to the 'drug method' that it is truly laughable to compare them" ........ . M.D. Says Chiropractor Is Fa Ahead in Human Relations Dr. George W. Crane believes the
future for doctors of dental surgery and chiropractic medicine will be brigh ter as a result of medicar e, according to a story appearing in the Fort Worth Star-T elegram.
Dr. Crane, author of two syndicated newspape r columns, spoke at the open: ing session recently of th e Parker Chiropractic Research Foundation at Hotel Texas in Fort Worth.
Medicare is going to change the M.D. into a man addicted to prescriptionwriting, said Crane, who has an M.D. degree.
The psychologist explained that patien ts are demanding to go to hospitals for everything and the visit to a aoctor's office is being by-passed.
With the increase of patients, doctors will lose one of the greatest curing techniqu es, Dr. Crane said-the "laying on of hands." '
"This will reduc e the prestige of the M.D.," he asserted. .
Dr. Crane told the chiropractors and their assistants they still have the techniqu e of physical contact with their patients and should use it in medical endeavor. ·
He scorned medical doctors who belittle doctors providing other medical services . "There is one of us (medical men ) for every 400 persons," Dr. Crane said. "We are grossly in the minority and should indulge in more symbi.osis {intimate association)." ' ·
"The chiropractor is far ahead of the M.D. in app lied human relati'ons " .he claimed. "The average physkian ~cares the patients to death." _ ·
"P hysicians are almo.st totally inarticulate in phrasing merucal concepts in terms the patient cap understand ." ...

A DEFINITION Of SPINAL CORRECTION --~----------------------------------------
Webster's Dictionary defines chiropractic as "a system of adjusting the joints especially of the spine by hand for the curing of disease." The same dictionary further defines the word "spine as the backbone, or spinal column .
Chiropractic came into existence in 1895, the same year that Roentgen discovered the X-Ray. In 1895, there was one chiropractor and one patient. There are now more than twenty thousand chiropractors and over thirty-five million chiropractic patients in the United States. Chiropractic has · spread. beyond our boundaries and today nearly one thousand doctors of chiropractic practice in Canada while an additional twelve hundred practice in all other continents of the world.
Chiropractic has played an important part in the scientific revolution of healing in modern times, and the advancement is continuing at an accelerated pace.
Chiropractic care is based upon the fundamental law of nature that for every effect there must be a cause. This has been demonstrated in . physics, chemistry and every other science known to man. The concept that · disturbances of the nervous system can be major factors in the development of many disease conditions has long been known, however, it was the science of chiropractic that centered attention upon the nervous system and its relationship to the human spine as the most significant factor in initiating and producing the di?ease processes.
The doctor of chiropractic today is a highly trained and qualified specialist of the spine and nervous ~em . His education is thorough and precise and includes a complete study of the human body and all its intricacies. His natural approach to abnormal health conditions commonly called disease is meticulous ic every respect. ~
The objective of chiropractic care is to determine, by accurate scientific measurement and evaluation, the exact location and degree of spinal misalignment that is producing pressure or irritation or_1 the nerves. By precise and specific adjustments applied to the spine by hand ... the pressure or irritations are c;orrected, thus· allowing the return of normal coordinating action by the nervous system to all parts of the body.

EXCERPTS FROM A MEDICAL RESEARCH PAPER
'' Fundamentals Of Chiropractic From
-·" The -Standpoint Of A Medical Doctor"
By FREIMUT BEIDERMANN, M.D.
Dr. Beidermann is a noted medical lecturer and author who has first hand knowledge and experience of the science and practice of chiropractic. He was Vice President of the German Medical Research and Cooperative Society for Chiropractic.
\
' \,
We medical doctors who have studied and used chiropractic techniques and have proven its undisputable value cannot understand the negative attitude towards chiropractic. Unwillingly do we recall Virchow 's accusing words: "Thro .ugh all times two drawbacks have made the progress of medicine impossible .. . the authorities and the system." Goethe said: "Nothing is more endangering to a new truth than an old mistake."
The gods have placed the diagnosis before treatment. We must, however, beware of exaggeration in diagnos_ing. Whatever helps us find the cause of certain given disease symptoms must be considered good as diagnostic help. And · when palpation of the spine points to the cause of a disease, we will gladly omit other diagnostic methods.
Following is a history of an impressive case which Doctor Biedermann relates his clinic treated: "A 35 year old patient was sent to tis for an X-ray examination of the stomach and intestines because of a suspected ulcer. For six wee.ks he had suffered increasing cramp-like stomach pain, which was not in direct association with the amount of food taken in. He did suffer from heartburn, however. The X-ray examination, the blood tests, temperature and urine tests were negative. On spinal palpation we found a subluxation ( misaligned vertebrae), the sixth vertebrae between the shoulders.
··, "The patient, on being questioned said he had suffered pains in the back and later recalled having ~\r{fered for a long time from sharp pains between shoulders. These pains started after he had picked up a, wheelbarrow . We gave him a spinal adjustment by hand upon which the complaints disappeared and never returned. Post examination four weeks later revealed a complete absence of complaints although the pa.tient had taken normal quantities of food ... which he did on suggestion. Until then the patient had_ been on a bland diet . Neither heartburn nor stomach cramps showed up. Immediately following the adjustment the patient felt a total change in body comportment. "
Having learned rather extensively for several years the chiropractic teachings and after practicing chiropractic more and more, I do know also that the healing art of chiropractic has its indisputable merits . It is worthy_ of and deserves to be used in the care of the sick.
It has always been the basis of the medical healing art to do what is correct and beneficial to the patient at the right place and at the opportune time. Gothe's words from Faust are applicable: "You will not chase what you have not experienced."
It takes a lot of common sense to forsake the major part ot the available medication therapies and in the true sehse of the word to let "the doctor from within the patient fortify the patient's back."

RELIEVE THE NERVE PRESSURE AND BE FREE AGAIN
MIGRAI NE &others-
Page 12
According to a recent United States Public Health Service Report, it is estimated that over 15,000,- J
000 persons are victimized by recurring headaches and that over $300,000,000 is spent annually for headache remedies.
Unfortunately, but nevertheless true , one cannot swallow health. While these methods . may offer _temporary relief in some cases, until the true underlying cause is corrected, the chances are that the headaches will recur.
There are many causes of headaches, including migraine , and these causes may be either organic or functional, depending upon their origin.
It is generally accepted that organic -type headaches are due to advanced diseased states of the brain . . Fortunately, the functional-type headaches are most common. In the majority of these cases the causes are traceable to pressure or impingement upon nerves primarily within the neck region of the spine. This results from a misalignment or distortion of one or more of the cervical or neck vertebra. Neglect in correcting this abnormal condition causes dilation of the blood vessels inside the brain, swelling of tissues and increased pressures within the skull.
Headaches are also ·due to eyestrain , sun glare , poisonous or noxious gases, inadequate rest, dietary . indiscretions such as overindulgence in food or alcohol and other irregular and abnormal living habits.
While the cervical or neck region is most frequently involved in headache problems, other areas of the spine may be indirectly involved. Such could be the case when a nerye in the mid-shoulder or thoracic portion of the spine leading to the stomach is pinched or irritated. This may produce a referral headache as a secondary symptom in addition to the l9cal stomach pain and associated symptoms. Similar conditions may develop in other portions of the spine and nervous system.
As previously mentioned, you cannot swallow health nor can it be injected. The individual plagued by headaches should not allow himself to be lulled into a false sense of security by the relief that temporary measures may produce. For until the underl ying causes are eliminated, the condition could grow progressively worse and develop _more serious complications and drug dependency.
The specialist in chiropractic is effective in eliminating the causes of the majority of headaches .
THE SPINE IS THE SWITCHBOARD THAT DISTRIBUTES THE -LIFE-POWER.

THERE'S A RIGHT WAY AND A WRONG WAY Page 14
HERE'S THE RIGHT WAY TO LIFT, PUSH AND REACH 0 WRONG • RIGHT
I
~
CARRYING LUQQAQE. Leaning to either side when carrying luggage-is ungraceful and leads to early fatigue. Instead, walk erect, elbows slightly bent. Occasionally shift the luggage from hand to hand to avoid unnecessary strain. "Women try to do too much today," says Samuel ·Feitelberg, chief physical therar.ist at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. 'Instead of buying a big piece of luggage, get ' two smaller ones for easier balance."
REACHING. Stretching is good exercise by itself, but it can be dangerous when you add extra weight by picking up something. The farther out you reach, the greater the possibility of strain. Don't take chances by trying to reach a heavy object on a high shelf. The possible danger is in losing your balance and falling backward, or dropring the object-possibly on yourself. Use a sturdy footstoo. Stand close enough to the object to maintain your balance. Take boxes down one at a time unless they are empty or very light. When reaching high for a small object, use one hand for support.
LlnlNG FROM FLOOR. Do not bend from the waist to lift an object from the floor. This puts all the strain of lifting on the lower back muscles. In addition, bending over suddenly can produce a strained back. Instead, bend the knees and squat down, keeping the back straight. If necessary, spread the knees or lower one knee to get closer to the object. Then use the leg muscles-the strongest in the body-to push up, holding the object close as you rise.
PUSHING AND PULLING. Keep the back straight and let the legs do the work. Push at about the middle of an object, rather than near •the top or bottom. Exert a smooth, steady force; avoid jerky or sudden moti~ns. When moving upholstered chairs or similar furniture, slide them instead of attempting to lift or carry them. Whenever possible, use a small wagon, dolly or even a lawn mower to transport heavy objects such as sacks and crates when working outside.
LlnlNG FROM TABLE LEVEL. Instead of bending over the table, pull the object close to the body before attempting to lift. Keep the back erect. Maintain good balance by keeping the feet about 12 inches apart, with one foot h11lf a pace forward. To move a typewriter, approach and lift it from the rear, thus keeping the heaviest part next to the body. Avoid sudden or unusual twisting when carrying a heavy object.
ON STAIRS. Never carry a large object so that it blocks your vision when going up or down stairs. One hand should always be free to grasp a railing or provide balance and support. If the package cannot be carried on the side with one hand, either get help or try moving it down one step at a time. Also, don't try to consolidate the load to save steps. Instead, if possible, divide the load into smaller packages and make two or three trips. To avoid tottering backward, lean forward slightly when going upstairs. ♦

Learn How
To Lift Properly
I. Size up the object to be lifted to decide how best to get a grip ·on it that won't hurt you.
2. Plant your feet solidly close to the object to be lifted; get a good grip on it. Bend your . knees, keep your back straight.
3. Now UP, liftin.g with the big muscles of your legs,· thighs, arms and shoulders-NOT with spine; keep the loads dose to your body.
4. Be sure you can see where you're going. Have clear vision over the load ; or else get help-or leave it for a truck.
5. Use your head; you might be the boss some day. If you see a place where a mechanical lifting device will save money, speak up.
6. In any case, get help for large, bulky, awk. ward, or extra-heavy loads. In team-lifting
use the common-sense rules of lifting with your muscles, and CO-OPERA TE. .
7. Use rhythm; either alone or in team 'lifting, g~t the swing and let the load help lift itself.
8. Help keep floors clear of tripping and fallina hazards. Be tidy, at home or on the job.

CHIROPRACTIC THERAPY SAVED THE WORLD CHAMPION
And Still the World Champion ... Rocky Marcian9!
Over 1, 000 people stood in hushed silence as the on ly undefeated heavyweight champion of the world, Rocky Marciano, humbly told his story. He had injured his backtop specialists from New York were called and they recommended surgery. Rocky said, 111 went home tL, Brockton, Massachusetts, and got in touch with my family friend, Dr. Edward Crealese of Middletown, Connecticut, a Chiropractor.
From that time on, I had to fight only my ring opponents and was able to go all the way to the top to become champion. My back is fine and I will always be grateful to the Chiropractic Profession and all the Chiropractors who saved me from surgery. Thank you. 11
The applause of 1, 000people let the champion know that as far as they were concerned, he still was the . champ.
11! started out, as do most ..beginners in the medical art, to conquer the demon 'dis-ease' with drugs. I, too, often failed, as they all do .. .. the more I studied and experimented, the more !was convinced that the real cause of dis-ease was impinged nerves, and that the Chiropractic adjustment was the most scientific way to release them. Results are what count, and Chiropractic care, when scientifically given, brings them .. " Dr. William A. Seeley, Tipton, Iowa.

Page 17 DR. FRIGARD IS A SPECIALIST IN SPINAL CORRECTION
·OTHER CONDITIONS
While the specialist of chiropractic does not claim to have the panacea for all the ills to which man falls heir, it appears to be a common misconception of many persons that the scope of chiropractic is limited to problems involving the backbone only. This is a definite fall3;cy.
Chiropractic takes into its broad category many organic conditions which are directly associated with the nervous system and spinal column.
Please refer ~o the illustration on page twenty-hyo since it will assist you in understanding why the specialist of chiropractic has much more to offer those in ill health than is generally known.
You will see, as an example, that every organ of the body depends upon "regulated'.' nerve action. These nerves and nerve fibers are connected both with the spinal column and the body organ itself . Therefore, it is completely reasonable to conclude that if there is a misalignment of the spine which is causing nerve impingement, the nerve supply to the. "dependent" organ is diminished. The result is an inability of the organ involved to function properly.
You will realize the sound fogic of the scie~ce of ~hiropractic in administering its technique to the causes of the trouble rather than "just" appeasing the affected organ with symptomatic relief.
The Doctor of Chiropractic can successfully treat the "ailing" organs by releasing the pressure on nerves emitting from the spinal column and thus allow the body's natural re~ources to cure the condition. A review of this section can be summarized by the following statements:
1. PRIMARY CAUSES OF DISEASE ARE WITHIN THE BODY ITSELF.
2. PRIMARY CAUSES OF DISEASE ARE DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH NERVE TRANSMISSION .
3. WHEN A MECHANICAL IMPAIRMENT EXISTS IN THE BONY STRUCTURE OF THE BODY, THERE IS EVIDENCE OF INTERFERENCE WITH NORMAL NERVE TRANSMISSION.
4. ALL MECHANICAL IMPAIRMENTS SHOULD BE REPAIRED THROUGH A NATURAL APPROACH.
5 . . THEREFORE, WHEN MECHANICAL -IMPAIRMENTS ARE CORRECTED, THE BODY WILL HEAL ITSELF. .
6. WITH THIS PROCEDURE NATURE CAN EFFECT HER CURE AND TAKE YOU ALONG THE ROAD TO A FULLER, HAPPIER AND HEAL THIER LIFE.
BY ADDING LOVE TO YOUR YEARS, YOU ADD YEARS TO YOUR LIFE.

----Dr. Eckles examines Jayne Mansfield's find area of nerve impingement.
It is my good fortune to live and practice chiropractic in Southern California. During our years here, my wife and I have been privileged to meet many of the top entertainment personalities . There sincere dedication to their profession is to be greatly admired and respected. It is second to none.
I have found that, con_trary to what you read in the newspapers and various columns, most of the stars appearing in the varied entertainment media are sincere, hard working people. They are subject to a great deal of physical stress and mental tension . They arise as early as 5 A .M. and usually put in a twelve hour working day. The life of-a star is one of unending emotional pressure.
W hether the patient is from the world of entertainment, business, labor, or an average citizen; emotions and tensions are quite evident in the fast pace world we live in today. Headaches and ulcers are familiar signs of . copflicting emotions . Worry, too, causes symptoms that heighten fears and produces damaging physical stress.

This is a s~ory of despair turned to happiness, of beauty created from ruin, and the part Dr. L. T. Frigard played through Chiropractic care. Daryl Johnson, singer, dancer, entertainer, recording star, was injuredinanautomobile accident, July 22, 1963.
She was paralyzed from the walst down. When she was finally able to walk, her right leg would lose all sensation and become useless. One could stick a pin through the flesh of her leg and she could not feel any pain. In addition to the leg, she suffered with back pain, neck pain, and severe headaches.
Under Chiropractic care from the Frigard Chiropractic Offices, she is able to walk nbrmally again. In fact, she is now singing and dancing professionally! All sensation has returned to her legs. She is free from the back pain, neck pain and the severe headaches which plagued her after her whiplash auto accident. '
Daryl Johnson was awarded the honor of World Chiropractic Sweetheart at the World Chiropractic Convention in Fo?t Worth, Texas. The award was given for her courageous comeback to the em:ertainment world after her disabling accident.

WHIPLASH INJURIES -- HOW THEY HAPPEN
HIT FROM REAR
HEAD-ON
½'HIPLASH Whiplash is, a term coined by the healing arts to describe an injury to the cervical or neck portion
of the spinal column. This term describes the type of motion produced when an automobile is hit from the rear, front, or side and describes the usual resul~ing neck sprain . The force involved in such an injlliy is monumental, for example, when a 3,000 lb. car trave ling 25 mph strikes the rear of another vehicle at rest with an impact duration of one·second, a force of 3,450 pounds is transmitted to and acts upon unsuspecting passengers. This lashing force may produce severe spinal and soft tissue damage .
The result of such an injury is a misalignment of spinal vertebrae, primarily centered in the cervical or neck region . This produces a pressure or irritation which, in effect, pinches the actual nerve roots emitting from between each vertebra . This can lead to a variety of symptoms; from intense headaches, neck .and shoulder pains, nausea, dizziness to even more severe disorders such as numbn~ss and tingling in the arms and hands and includes various forms of bursitis, joint and soft tissue damage.
The greatest number of whiplash injuries occur from automobile accidents when the car is struck from behind. · The same injury, however, can occur if the lashing force from the impact is from the front or the side of the car. A very small percentage may also result from blows on the head, slips or falls, jarring and . jolting forces and other unguarded movements. Improper postural and occupational habits may also give rise to an irritated or pinched nerve and produces similar symptoms as those of the typical neck whiplash sprain.
I The suclden stopping of a moving vehicle may cause a whiplash of the neck of the passenger who
is unaware of the necessity for sudden deceleration. Power brakes, too, can be hazardous for the unpre pared passe1'.ger. High powered engines capable of rapid acceleration can be responsible for lashing of necks of the passengers.
Imagine, if you will, being seated in your car which may have stopped for some reason .. .. perhaps ignition trouble ... perhaps at a traffic signal ... or, perhaps, to discharge a' passenger . .. when, suddenly and without warning, the_ car behind you does not apply his brakes in time and rams into the rear of your car. Through this force of impact, your car is pushed abruptly ahead.
The weight of the head , which averages from six to eight pounds, increases the la_shing effect especially when the muscular control is caught off guard. The extreme forward , backward , or side lashing of the neck usually results in the bones (vertebrae) of the neck becoming displaced, causing what is termed a "subluxatfon. " This is a condition where the vertebrae have slipped slightly away from their normal position and create a pressure (pinch) upon the spinal nerves between each vertebra. In some instances the cushioning discs between the vertebrae may be injured or compressed. ·

A GERMAN M.D. DARES TO TELL OF HIS FINDINGS
German M.D's Report 'Fantastic' Chiropractic Results
' --Translated in part from the German medical magazine, "Die Medizinische Zeitschrift," which also reported on the finding of spinal abnormalities in
86 of 100 ulcer patients.
IT BECOMES more and more apparent that clinical medicine,
especially internal medicine, pays too little attention to vertebral variations . . and wie believe it behooves every responsible physician to draw therapeutic ·consequences from these new findings.
The application of Chiropractic, of course, will be indicated in almost every case because we will always find a vertebral involve ment. Proof for this can only come with time . It would be wrong, on the other hand, to give up completely the old proven methods for a not entirely prov,en theory.
We originally adjur•ed a group of patients, mostly women, suffering from headaches, shoulder-arm , syndrome and lumbago. We were amazed to find that abdominal pains of various types-of which these patients had complained for many years - had disappeared without' trace.
We then took patients who suffered from specific internal diseases and adjusted them in the involved dorsal area.
So far we have not found one case which failed to respond to some extent.
The results often are so fantastic that the patients believe in a miracle, and one can understand this after having been under medical care for years without results.
We believe out of personal experience that good Chiropractic must have an influence over the entire vegetative syst,em above and beyond the local influence .
We come now to the question of Chiropractic care of stomach ulcers and various other visceral cases with spinal involvement. We must, after our experiments and research, join entirely to the idea of Gutzeit, namely, that changes in the dorsal spine, especially in diseases of the viscera, play a very important pathogenic part in
diseases of the viscera. We have drawn out of these findings some therapeutic consequences .
We are often inclined to speak of real visceral disease only when we detect definite morphological findings.
Almost all nerve interference
1produoed by the spinal column leads to functional disturbances in the viscera, which we cannut detect immediately with our present diagnostic procedures .
Only the heart presents the opportunity for a thorough functional diagnosis by the electrocardiograph, but it is also possible to correct heart disturbances by adjustment of the cervical vertebrae.
Misalignment in the dorsal spine could be the cause of visceral disease, but the misalignment also could exercise only a localized influence and certainly would not constitute the only pathogenic momentum . A typioal dorsal spine subluxation · can cause the building up of calculi in the kidney and gall bladder.
Abnormal tonicity and mobility, an<l hindered drainage (most easily seen in X-ray) lead to inflammation and this, together with changes in the composition of the products to be excrebed, leads lo formation of calculi.
The stomach ulcer is another example of the localized influence of abnormalities in the dorsal spine. To accept only a vertebral factor in the etiology of the stomach ulcer is not a disputable question as far as we know now. A known malfunctioning of the vegetative system brings about a definite change in the vascular system prior to the development of the ulcer.
Add to that exogenous causes such as psychic factors which besides bringing about stomach malfunction also add capillary damage.
Since . the vegetative and vascular abnormalities in stomach ailments are of general nature and not limited to the stomach, it has been a question for many years why abnormalities lead to ulcera tion only in the stomach and duodenum . Only in these organs can one attach a pathogenic factor to the acid juices when conditioned tissue cells are heavily damaged by nutrition.
That nerve interference brought about in the dorsal region has an influence on the production of a stomach ulcer through the vascular system is indicated by the research of F. Dittmar, who says that very marked vascular changes are produced in the outer coat of the stomach. The research of Kroll and Rein indicate the same findings.
According to Bartsch, skeletal changes may cause v,egetativevascular irritation and thereby become blood vascular reflex mechanisms.
In considering any of several visceral ailments, one has the impr, ession that the supplying blood vessels, the tonicity and vitality of the organs are affected by changes in the dorsal spine.
Rickers considers changes in the nerve channels as the primary cause of disease. Is the stomach ulcer a typical example of Rickers' neuro-pathological trend? Development of the actual ulcer occurs at the end of a series of functional disturbances which include the hormonal factor.
These disturbances are in reciprocal influence with intermingling nervous and hormonal factors.
But all extra -vertebral and extragastric etiological factors cannot account for a stomach ulcer .
When one succeeds in interrupting these disturbances emanating from the dorsal region, all other etiological factors in relation to stomach ulcers are without effect.

LOVVBAC K PAIN
A condition of low back pain is a very common one . It is most of ten referred to as a sacroiliac problem. The "Sacroiliac Club" membership includes some eighty percent of the human race at one time or another; yet it is not understoo d by the average person.
Let's boil it-down to size. "Sacroiliac" is nothing more than that old pain in the back. It is also known by other names such as low back syndrome, lumbosacral sprains, and strains, disc condit ions, sciatica and associated problems. However, with slight exception, they all refer to the same basic conditio n. The essential characteristic is one of pain, usually severe, piercing and limiting . It primari ly results from a verteb ra or pelvic bone slipping out of place and pinching or irritating the sciatic and adjacent spinal nerves.
Drugs, pills and braces are not the answer nor the cure. They may relieve temporarily but after wearing off . . . you' re still a member of the club .
The causes are mul tiple. It may happen by bending over to pick up a chair , sudden coughing or sneezing, a slight twist of the body, rising from a chair , occupational and industrial injuries, poor postural habits, auto accidents, pregnancy complications and a host of similar activities and injuries . The pain flashes like lightning across your back and may proceed with pain, numbness and ting ling down the legs. You may not be able to straighten up . Maybe you cannot stand up without being in agony. Attempting to find a comfortable position is next to impossible.
Low back injuries and complications result in draining our economy of millions of dollars a year in treat
.ment and disability costs with thousands of man hours lost.. The majority of state industrial accident commissions throughout the country report that these are the most frequent of industrial injur ies and exceed all other types of injuries combined in financial and disability losses.

DR. FRIGARD ADDRESSES A GROUP ON HIS SYSTEM . OF THERAPY . . ____ :... .......... ....::·-----■-----
Dr. Frigard addressing a group of doctors on his advanced methods of spinal correction. The amazing results he has brought about in cases in which other therapeutic methods have failed have earned him the acclaim of his profession. An erudite man, he examines . every phase of the patient's personality to best handle each case. "Every individual is a definite equation peculiar only to himself. To effectively help that individual the doctor has to determine not only the obvious cause, but the caus e of the cause as well. This req ,1ire ~ both sight and insight and the dedicated doctor learns to use both to better (serve his patient. Without this discernment the cloctor is but half a doctor and his failures will come back to haunt him. With it, spinal correction can perform veritable miracles: This is the mark of the modern doctor who deals with living people and not so many bodies. The day for such doctors is here. The others can only fall by the wayside. Remember, most 'incurable' cases are due to UNCURABLE DOCTORS."
"Chiropractic i's founded on the science of cause elimination and is the only method of specifically adJusting the cause of so-called disease that has ever been proved by fact. It is greater than either osteopathy or medicine and will eventually lead the field. Chiropractic stands firmly on its marvelous achievements of the past ten years and needs no greater tribute. 11 Dr. Edward S. Doutt, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

SPINAL NERVES
D . D. Palmer, founder of chiropractic, was ridiculed widely when he first expressed the thought that the normally functioning brain, operating through a sound nervous system, regulates and integrates every body activity down to the workings of the tiniest cell. Today his theory has been amply proven and is almost universally accepted.
The nervous system, operating by electrochemical impulses, serves the body in a variety of ways. It functions as the body's lookout and gatherer of information about the world outside us as wel I as the one within us; as the clearinghouse where this information is processed for instant use or future reference; as general communications center; and as headquarters for mappii:ig the strategy and making the decisions in everything the body does. The nervous system, in. short , is the initiator of the body's muscular activity and the regulator of our mental and physical functions.
The brain and the spinal cord serve as the system's main base of operations . From them a prodigious network of nerves reaches out to every part of the body_.
To connect the brain to the rest of the body is the function of the spinal cord which is in reality a direct continuation of the brain. The spinal cord resembles a cable and is surrounded on the outside by vertebrae ... twenty-four of which form the body's backbone or spine. An extensive network of nerves pass from the spinal cord out through the openings between the vertebrae at various levels. These nerves carry electrochemical nerve impulses to every millimeter of skin surface , every muscle, every blood vessel, every bone and every part of the body from head to toe transmitting nerve signals at the rate of one to 350 feet per second to and from the brain and spinal cord .
The chiropractor was the first to recognize that the nervous system and its intelligent directing force must be free of all obstacles in its path in order to function efficiently and thus _maintain normal body health.

MODERN X-RAY PINPOINTS THE TROUBLE Page 44
I A thorough x-ray study and analysis is made before treatment is given in Frigard offices. This can only be done through a special-
. ized technique and analysis recently developed. With precise analysis of the position of the vertebra in degrees of deviation from normal position, the first important step in releasing nerve pressure has been accomplished.
I
Spinal x-rays reveal the nerve pressures that need correction in every case. This eliminates all guess-work and makes it possible to go directly to the cause of the trouble . . Here the experience of Dr. Frigard has played a vital part in the institution's success. Every patient is carefullyx-rayed and an accurate analysis is made of the plates.
EVERY PROBLEM, WHEN SOLVED, IS SIMPLE.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE
Chiropractic-I & Insurance
Chiropractic is an exacting science today. Examinations include physical, neurologic, orthopedic, blood pressure , various laboratory tests and other specific examination procedures according to what 'is required. The chiropractic specialist utilizes the most advanced techniques available ; He is constantly improving his ability to serve his patients .
The practice of chiropractic is recognized today by more than 700 of the major and minor insurance companies throughout the country. These include automobile insurance, company group plans, union health and welfare insurance funds, state industrial accident insurance and many private plans.
The demand for increased insurance recognition for chiropractic service, by the public and numerous industries is increasing yearly.
Lloyd Sanders, president of Atlas Mutual Life Insurance Company, wrote: "We recommend chiroprac tors, especially for heart, hypertension, back strains , disc conditions, female disorders, as well as for many others . We have had very satisfactory results when chiropractors were in attendance. In most cases the claims ran less time than those attended by medical doctors."
In addition to the right of freedom to choose the doctor and healing art of your choice, t\lere are two basically simple, but important factors which have initiated the requests for chiropractic inclusion in insurance contracts: 1) Effecti\·c and expedient response to health conditions. This is especially true for many spinal injuries which previously failed to respond to orthodox treatment. 2) Economic savings . .. less cost of care and greatly reduced disability time, thus reducing treatment, compensations costs and personal economic losses.
A recent statistical study of industrial back injuries in the state of Florida revealed that chiropractic care reduced the overall cost of treatment by nearly half or 47 percent and reduceci :he total loss of time by 75 percent when compared to other forms of treatment.

This insurance · is not too well understood by many people. It provides for reimbursement for necessary care that might result from anyinjuries sustained while in the confines of an automobile or in entering or alighting from an automobile . This includes treatment should anyone be injured as a r ,esult of an automobile accident or has a car door closed on a finger, etc. Limits of co·verage vary from $500 to possibly $5,000 a1nd payment for treatment is usually limited to that which is rendered within one year from the date of the accident. The patient has a right to select a doctor of his choo _sing.
Auto insurance policies provide for Chiropractic treatment for disabilities sustained in collisions . Chiropractic is particularly effective in the treatment of 11whiplash 11 and other back and neck injuries which are often the result of an auto accident.
Sudden jarring of the head and neck in an auto collision may damage the neck without a person knowing it. For example: when a car traveling at 10 miles per hour strikes another car, it may transmit to this car a force of 2 5 tons! The person riding in the car continues to move forward, while the head being hinged at the neck snaps backward with several tons of force--without any support, since the muscular control of the neck is caught off guard. The result-spinal nerve roots are caught in a pincher movement by the vertebra cau-sing headaches, neckaches, backaches, and other symptoms.
If your automobile were involved in an accident, you would have a mechanic chec:c over the entire car and correct any misalignment, broken parts, or other damage. You would make sure it was mechanically sound before driving it again. The same principle applies to your body if it has been in an accident. , Have a spin9-l check-up to be sure the accident did not damage your spine and pinch spinal nerves.
The l onger you wait, the more damage you suffer and the harder it is to correct the cause of your trouble.
Get your check-up now-avoid serious trouble later.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOUR INSURANCE
California welfare program
Many programs conducted by the State of California provide for health insurance coverage, Old Age Security, Medical Aid to the Aged, Aid .to Needy Disabled, Aid to Needy Children, and Aid to the blind are some of the groups for which provision has been made for treatment by a doctor as well as necessary surgical and hospital care. The recipients of the above programs, for the most part, can select any doctor of their choosing. Check with your Doctor of Chiropractic if you have any questions regarding these p·rograms ~
If you are a beneficiary of California Old Age S~curity you may include Chiropractic Care through the Medical Care Trust Fund. Dr. , Frigard or any of his associates will help you w~th the necessary details.
Many of our senior citizens have been ;receiving such Chiropractic Care with the entire bill paid for by the Medical Care Trust Fund.

Page 57 SIMPLE EXERCISES THAT WILL HELP KEEP YOU FIT
RECOMMENDED BY PARKER
CHIROPRACTIC RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The object of these exercises is to move the spinal column through its entire range of motion, thus helping to improve posture, hold vertebrae in their normal positions and generally increase the overall level of health.
I '
~ di W'I~ 1. LATERAL BENDING
Stand erect with arms hanging naturally at sides. Bend slowly to one side beginning with the head, neck, shoulders, chest and lower back, allowing arm to descend naturally with the bend (exercise should not involve the hips). Then return trunk to the starting position in the reverse order. Repeat five times on each side. I
2.I ROCKING CHIN TUCK
Sit erect. Tum head as far to one side as possible. Then raise it (as if looking at the ceiling) and rock it down to touch chin on the shoulder. This nodding motion is repeated five times. Return the hll3d to its normal position; then repeat exercise on the opposite side. The entire exercise 4 '1' should be done five times .
~ 3 TRUNK SLUMP AND RETURN
~ 14°;'\ S;t in a straight chair . Bend the trunk forward as if to place the head between · the knees, 7l effecting the motion in the spinal column rather than in the hips. Return the body to its
I starting position, beginning the movement with the lower segments and proceeding to the upper segments (until you feel as 'tall' as possible). Repeat 10 times. I
4. HYPER-EXTENSION .
Lie face down on the floor, arms extended straight ahead. Raise ,6.; _\_ arms, head and shoulders (chest) from prone position by contracting ~ ~ \ ~ back muscles (usual height of chin from floor-20 inches). After I holding this position a short period, slowly return to starting position.
Tolen relax. Repeat exerc ise five times. :ss~:ec~ p::~n s:~a: fours' (hands and knees) with arms and thighs
A in vertical position from shoulders and hips, respectively. Roll pelvis, . f"t7h arching back upward, and lowering head, trying to 'round' spine as
r-./ ' 1.,~ much as possible. Hold this position briefly. Then allow pelvis to rock
I in opposite direction, allowing spine to sway or sag, and tilting head up-
/ ward. Maintain this position briefly. Relax; then return to arched position. Repeat ten times. I
\:....t.. _ ( ('-..~ ~ Q \ 6. ROCK AND ROLL ~ ~ ~ J Lie on back . Flex knees upward to chest and ret :1in th is position by holding
I knees firmly with hands and arms. Roll backward toward shou lders, flexing spine to its maximum. Hold position briefly, then roll back to starting position . Repeat, allowing gravity and body· weight to force flexion of the lumbar and dor.sal spine. Repeat ten times. Certain cases may require a sp~cial application of this exercise. In these instances the exercise is accomplished in an identical manner, the only deviatiora being that only one knee is flexed and held to the chest. I
A GREAT BASEBALL PLAYER'S EXPERIENCE WITH CHIROPRACTIC THERAPY
.~ A C,eat Baieball Pf age, · r.~< __ · - and Chiropractic
The Pittsburgh Press for August 18, 1966, carried an article 'by its Sports
Editor, Lester J. Biederman, which opened as follows-
"This is a very special day for a very special person who is a very
special ball player .1This is Roberto Clemente's 32nd birthday."
Close followers of b~seball know that Roberto, the rightfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Team, "is a very special person who is a very special ball player". He is a great defensive star with a strong, accurate
arm-an intelligent, speedy and daring base runner and an outstanding
batsman.
He has been National League batting champion three times, two of those championships being in succession-1964 and '65. As you read this, the 1966 baseball season may have ended and he may have won his third , consecutive chP.mpionship, or missed it by a very few points.
Elsewhere in the aforementioned article Mr. Biederman wrote, "Clemente is he~ded for the Hall of Fame and how many players can you pick out today who will make it to Cooperstown?" Mr. Biederman noted that, if Clemente has any regrets they might be about the years that his back troubled him and worry about his back induced nervousness in the stomach.
That remark caused us to look back to an article, "Aches and Pains and Three Batting Titles" by Mr. Myron Cope in the March 7, 1966, Sports Illustrated Magazine. That article was about Roberto Clemente. We lift the following-
"He spent four of his first five big-league years complaining of an agonizing back ailment that a battery of Pirate specialists could not trark down. When a chiropractor, whom Roberto consulted in defiance of front-office warnings, told him he had a curved spine, a pair of legs that did not weigh the same, and a couple of wayward disks, Roberto immediately saw why the physicians had overlooked such a mess .. 'They always X-rayed me lying down,' he says. 'They never X-rayed me standing up.'"
Clemente's great contributions to the Pittsburgh Baseball Club over the years must make the "front office" very happy that he consulted a doctor of chiropractic for his back trouble.

Phge 59 MISS AMERICA -- DR. JOYCE BROTHERS - DR. FREDERIK BAILES
Miss America
£ MISS AMERICA, the regal
ly beautiful Marilyn Van Derbur, of Denver, Colorado, is worthy of the place of honor on any top-class magazine.
We would have been proud to present her portrait for that re6son. and no other.
But, as it happens, we have another excellent excuse for changing the format of our front cover in favor of Miss America.
Colorado chiropractors backed Marilyn for the Miss Colorado contest by sponsoring three scholarships for the Miss Colorado scholarship pageant. In return she will feature ih the Correct Posture Week ceremonies of the state association, and already has starred in• television and film strips produced for chiropractic use .
Miss America and her family have received constant chiropractic care for years past.
During her recent Davenpo rt appearance she affirmed an interest in the welfare of our profession . . •

THE PENALTY OF LEADERSHIP
The PEnALTY of LEADERSHIP N EVERY field of human endeavor, he that is first
must perpetually live in the white light of publicity. ,r Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. ,r In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are al ways
the same. ,r The reward is widespread recognition, the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. ,r When a man's work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. ,r If his work be mere ly mediocre, he will be left severely alone- · if he achieves a masterpiece, . it will set a million tongues a-wagging. ,r Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. ,r Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. ,r Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it cannot be done. ,r Spiteful little voices in the domain of art were raised against our own Whistler as a mountebank, long after the big world had acclaimed him its greatest artistic genius. ,r Multitudes flocked to Bayreuth to worship at the musical shrine of Wagner, while the little group of those whom he had dethroned and displaced argued angrily ' that he was no musician at all. ,r The little world continued to protest that Fulton could never build a steamboat, while the big world flocked to the river banks to see his boat steam by. ,r The leader is assailed because he is a leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof of that leadership. ,r Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depreciate and to destroy - but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. ,r There is nothing new in this. ,r It is as old as the world and as old as the human passions - envy, fear, gre'ed, ambition, and the desire to surpass. ,r And it all avails nothing . If the leader truly leads, he remains-the leader. ,r Master-poet, master-painter, master-workman, each in his turn is assail ed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. ,r That which is good or great makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. ,r That which deserves to live-lives .
