What a fantastic day we had at the swimming Carnival last week.

What started out as very inclement weather, fined up just before the

carnival commenced. A special mention to the students who

participated in the event, their sportsmanship and enthusiastic

attitudes are to be commended. Thankyou to those parents who

volunteered their time to help out on the day and to the staff for both

their time at Barracudas training and for setting up for the day. Well

done to Miss Collins on her first Carnival, I am sure in 5 years time

she will reflect back on this day as the first of many. This week sees

us hosting the Interschool Swimming Carnival, we are actively looking

for parent helpers to support us in the many roles required. If you can

help out, please let Miss Collins know. We have prepared a special

flyer with photos to celebrate our trophies winners and the day’s

events. Photos will be loaded onto either Dropbox or Connect this

week, access details will be posted onto Facebook. Parents can then

select the particular images they wish to download. Alternatively, if

you contact Mrs Hartley with a list of students she can upload images

onto a USB.

Wonderful Work

To accompany our focus on an improvement in presentation and the

standard of handwriting across the school, students have been

coming up to Administration with Wonderful Work. Although this was

a process that we used in 2018, we have added to this with a special

photo being taken. The photos are displayed in the Principal’s office

until the sheet is full. We have collated all the photos from this term

and they will be on display on the pin up board in front of the canteen.

The type of work we have seen includes writing at a high level, Go

Maths pages, problem solving and handwriting. Students are very

excited about their wonderful work, this can be seen from their bright

smiles and also their exuberance as they come into the office.

Vision: Braeside Primary School is a dynamic learning community that values diversity and

fosters a sense of belonging.

We meet the needs of each individual through collaborative, reflective, and evolving school-wide

practices that provide explicit, engaging experiences. Our students achieve their academic, emotional

and social potential and are contributing members of the community.

Good Standing Event

Good Standing will be on Wednesday 10th April. Students will be participating in a rotation of activities

which include jewellery making, cooking and sport. More information will be given closer to the date.

Students who have received less than 3 behaviour slips and have authorised absences will be eligible to

attend.

Easter Celebration Day

We will be having an Easter Celebration day on the last day of term. Please see the attached flyer for

details.

Attendance and Behaviour

With this newsletter is a graphical summary of Braeside’s attendance data from last year and so far into

2019. We are very pleased with the improvements that have been made in the % of students attending

regularly and also the improved number of authorised absences. This has been a focus for the past 15

months and we are finally seeing a shift in our data. The percentage of regular attenders has increased

from 59% to 74% for the start of 2019. We currently have 26 students from our 200 who have 100%

attendance.

LONGITUDINAL STUDENT ATTENDANCE DATA FOR BRAESIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL Report Criteria:

Table 1: Attendance and Absence Type by Collection Period for BRAESIDE PRIMARY SCHOOL

* indicates that data is not final. Note that the Absences are proportions of half days in each category.

Behavioural data at Braeside also continues to improve, with a large reduction in the number of incidents

being dealt with by Administration. There has been a reduction in the severity of incidents, with the major

focus for Administration being on supporting groups of students through transition adjustments and

negotiating playground activities. As a result of this, we look forward to having a large percentage of

students attending the Good Standing events at the end of this term.

how you can support your child’s learning. By learning through play your child learns to

discover, take risk, negotiate and problem solve. Children learn to play with other

children and develop self awareness.

Wonderful Work sample from our Year 4 Student.

Convict Story by Sorab Kyan (Year 4, Room 7)

I tried to escape but I knew I had no chance, I tried kicking but they knocked me out cold. I woke up inside

the ship Charlotte, I was cold so I took myself to get warm by rubbing my hands. Along the way I took a

nap until I heard the ship stop. We were all exhausted and had no idea what was next for us.

The ship was very spooky. It felt like I was surrounded by spirits. We would have access outside twice a

week. The outside of the ship was rusty and had ropes on the poles that held the sails. I was frightened

that I would not make it to Australia.

All of us were freezing cold at night, so two of us would have to get in the same bed to keep each other

warm. When we woke up I heard that we were going to stop at an island. Then we hit a rock, CRACK!!

There was a big hole. Cold, freezing water was entering the boat. We had to swim to shore but there was

someone drowning, so went back to help him. I got a piece of wood and pushed it under water to get the

boy to hold onto the wood. I pulled him up quickly for him to breathe. We quickly swam back to the island.

When me and the boy got to the island we were exhausted.

We were hungry by then. We were stranded. Half

the guards went hunting around looking for food

for all of us. Then the guards came back with

coconuts, we all took turns taking a sip of coconut

milk. It stopped me from being hungry for a while.

We dug a big hole then went to get some large leaves to make ourselves warm for the night. The next morning, we helped the guards build a raft so we could get to the mainland……Australia. We got the large leafs to have shelter for 3 days. We built sails for directions to turn, so we knew where we were going. We took off with proudness inside my heart. Australia was calling my name!

WA Academy Plate Tennis Carnival

On Monday 18th March 2019, a group of students attended the Tennis Carnival with Mrs Stade.

The students played very well and enjoyed their day at the Katanning Country Club playing tennis.

COMMUNITY NOTICES

16 Albion Street PO BOX 907 Katanning WA 6317 98214433 [email protected] March 2019 Dear/Madam The Katanning Neighbourhood Centre formally known as the Community Recourse Centre is a not for profit organisation, and is none funded. Our main services offered at this centre include Community Harvest (Food Bank Agency), Community Garden where vegetables are grown for the Community Harvest, Centrelink Agency, Community use of computers, emailing and faxing. We also offer photographic work including restoration of old photos, photo printing and large format printing, along with 3D printing. These services are just keeping the centre open. We are currently looking for some help in the way of donations to keep our Community Harvest running. The Food Bank (Community Harvest) has become a very important part of Katanning for those families, singles and elderly find-ing very tough to keep putting food on the table. Any one that has a Centrelink card/Pension card or is in financial hardship can come and purchase their food at extremely low prices. We try to have everything that a family needs, from meat, vegetables, bread, cakes, dairy and daily items. Unfortunately with budget cuts backs to the main Food Bank service in WA, we are finding hard to get enough stock to put on our shelves. We do receive donation of bread daily from Woolworths which is gratefully received. We are now trying to restock, but to do this we are asking the community to get behind us and please help. This help can be in many ways, such as a monetary donation, Woolworth’s gift cards to spend on food items there, or simply a donation of food to us. We also have our Community Garden where donations of seedlings or garden supplies to keep our vegetable supply going would be great. The Katanning Neighbourhood Centre is open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm The Community Harvest (Food Bank) is open Monday to Friday 9am-2pm The whole centre is run by two staff members and some fantastic volunteers and on occasions a couple of work for the dole people. Thank you for your time. Kindest regards Karen Moore Manager Katanning Neighbourhood Centre
