Grant Consultation/Authorship/Collaboration with Public Schools enhancing research and effective practices Through each of these grants I was able to support our graduate students in the program, and in some cases graduate students from other departments. There were teachers trained in bilingual/ESL; doctoral and masters students gathered research for dissertations and theses; doctoral and masters students were able to gain grant directing, curriculum development, and assessment experiences for second language learners. Above all, this positively assisted the second language learning children and their parents in the state of Texas. Lara-Alecio, R. & Sproule, J. Reading Improvement Grant. Texas Education Agency. Academic Year 2000, $149, 995. Contracted with Texas A&M University, Office of Bilingual/ESL, EDCI Department to deliver course work for certification in Bilingual/ESL Programs. Twenty in-service bilingual/ESL teachers from two elementary schools, Aldine ISD, were registered under EDCI 611 for their bilingual/ESL certification. Tuition, Fees, and Registration for those 20 in-service teachers benefited the Department, College and University with above $ 15,000.

A Study Addressing Three Components of the National Bilingual Research Agenda for English Language Learner On High Stakes Assessment. Proposal Submitted jointly with Aldine ISD, Houston, Texas. Currently one graduate student is involved gathering data (The program receives $5,000 for student assistance and grant related activities). This is a one-year study. This collaborative study is carried out by the Bilingual/ESL Center, EDCI Department and Aldine ISD. This was one of only three field initiated research grants in the country awarded by OBEMLA.

Irby, B. J., & Lara-Alecio, R. A Validation Study Using the Hispanic Bilingual Gifted Screening

Instrument and the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test. Aldine ISD. This scale consists of 78 items in eleven clusters. It has taken six years to develop. Today the scale is being used in Georgia, Texas, Florida, and Colorado school districts with high concentrations of Hispanic bilingual students. Continued work is being done with this scale with the

development of a computer-scoring program and with revisions for use with PK levels. ($2,500 federal grant funds were used for this research initiative.)

Selected Service in Professional Societies Elected Program Chair for the Bilingual Special Interest Group (SIG), American Educational Research Association, 1998-1999. As a program chair, I was responsible for scheduling paper presentations, symposia, round tables, and poster sessions for 60 bilingual research studies. The Bilingual Education Research SIG has over 150 members. All represent the research institutions in higher education. In addition to program all the activities including invited speakers, I attended other research presentations. I also attended organizational meetings scheduled by the AERA Executive Board related to organizational issues (SIGS and Divisions). Montreal, Canada, 1999. Elected Chair for the Research & Program Evaluation SIG, National Association Bilingual Education, 1998-1999. As a newly elected chair, I was responsible in the program of bilingual research for The National Association of Bilingual Education. I was responsible programming three major presentations. The NABE annual meeting took place in Denver, Colorado with the participation of national researchers in the field of bilingual education. More than 50 professional organizations represent the Research and Program Evaluation SIG. It is a national and international annual conference. We sponsored a new Scholars Luncheon that was very successful. I was responsible for securing 20 scholars from across the nation to participate in this session.
