Deo Volente

DV abbreviates Deo Volente, meaning God Willing. These two initials follow all that we do just now. We’re never quite sure what can or can’t happen as restrictions fluctuate in the light of a seriously unpredictable challenge impacting on the world, right down to our Sussex village com-munity.

Church life in Graffham is an unknown quantity from one month to the next. Last time I wrote, we were still enjoying the novel experience of outdoor church on Sundays in warm sunshine under blue skies – with birdsong and butterflies and passing walkers, cyclists, drivers and horse riders witnessing the church alive in Graffham. We experienced the lovely occasion of our first outdoor baptism, using the Maundy Thursday bowl and pitcher made by Graffham potter Jo Morris for the first time. Wel-come baby Rebecca Pearce! Welcome memories, of church!

Now the seasons change again as the virus continues. We face new challenges to keep our spirits high and each other safe from harm. We plan, and then revise our plans, working from week to week, praying that every accommodation will restrict the impact of the virus to keep more people safe. Permitted numbers diminish to 15 for wedding services and six for separate baptism services. Colder and wetter weather returns us inside church, a mixture of welcome familiarity and strangeness with 2m social distancing, no congregational singing, the wearing of face cover-ings, warm coats and woolly socks!

As participants in the unfolding story of this church and community, we respond with all imagination possible. St Giles has formed a tiny choir, a permitted concession with four singers distanced in the sanctuary and chancel, how good it sounds, and must be to sing. Thanks to Tracey we’ve heard the organ play, which is much appreciated. We light candles, retrieved in large numbers from the upper vestry – a sort of Aladdin’s cave of church treasures including poppies,Christmas decorations, service booklets, family bibles, and flower arranging paraphernalia! We plan, as best we can, for fitting acts of Remembrance this year.

As the trajectory of the virus continues through the winter months, we remain faithful to our calling, confident in Christ’s steadfast love and compassion through thick and thin. Knowing that God’s faithfulness at least does not change, we await discovery of what our next response must be, to reflect on in next month’s magazine, DV.Every blessing Revd Vivien

Theivandiram Jeevathasan BEM

We were all absolutely thrilled that Jeeva was awarded a British Empire Medal in the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours and are still revelling in the visit from BBC South to mark the occasion.

One ‘clap for the carers’ evening, back in May, Martin Buckley com-mented that Jeeva deserved a medal for all that he was doing to help the village cope with Coronavirus. The citation was written and sent to the Cabinet Office. Months of secrecy followed until finally Jeeva was told he was to receive a medal and the icing on the cake was the TV interview.Well done Jeeva, and Vasu too, from all your friends in the village!Hugh BrownChairman, GVSA

Danger amongst the dead leaves

I’m scrambling through the woodland undergrowth, anxious, sweat-ing and clutching a 2kg pouch of white powder and a spoon. I may look like some Colombian cocaine smuggler but I’ve got the perfect excuse for the police: “I’m researching my Graffham Parish Magazine article”. In all this pandemic pandemonium I almost neglected to notice that I’ve passed a milestone – my 100th article for the maga-zine. Since 2012 I’ve been sitting down each month to write these wildlife articles. I’ve received some lovely comments over the years – thank you. It’s nice to know they are being read and enjoyed.

When I was a kid I would read loads of wildlife books with names like ‘the amateur naturalist’ (not to be confused with ‘the amateur naturist’, a mistake you only make once). Each book promised to make you a wildlife detective and was filled with tips on tracking mammals in the countryside. Most British mammals are nocturnal and, after centuries of persecution, all of them are understandably rather wary of humans. We hardly ever see them. Yet these invisible

animals leave behind tantalising clues which let us know they really exist: droppings, nibbled nuts, pellets. But the biggest giveaway of all are their footprints.

Primitive mammals (such as hedgehogs, stoats, badgers and you) are plantigrades. We stroll about on the soles of our feet and have five toes. When we run – to escape the drug squad for example – we use our toes and the balls of our feet. For the mammals who spend a lot of time running and jumping this basic mammalian plantigrade foot has evolved and adapted over time. Some animals have lost a toe (foxes, cats, dogs, hares) while the real gymnasts, such as deer, leap around on two toes and horses race on just one toe enclosed in a hoof. Like Sherlock Holmes with a foot fetish, you can examine each footprint’s formula of toes, claws and pads to deduce just who has been sneaking around at night.

My books told me that, once you find a footprint, the best way to capture it is to make a cast – which explains why I’m crouched here in the undergrowth excitedly mixing up plaster of Paris powder and pouring it into a footprint in the muddy woodland floor. I’ve always wanted to do this since I was a kid but, well, I guess life got in the way. Now, sat proudly on my desk, I have my first footprint cast: a badger (with five toes, a wide pad and obvious claws). A souvenir of my 100th article. And somewhere out there in the parish is a badger completely unaware that its footprint has created a deeper enjoyment of wildlife and inspired someone to preserve it. Which now I think about it, is all I have hoped for from these past 100 articles too. I hope I’ve made an impression.

Celebrations in our Parish

Our warm congratulations to Ken Crosdil and bride Pam Cole on the happy occasion of their wedding day at St Peter's Woolavington on Sun-day 27th September 2020. Congratulations too, to Rebecca Jane Ricardo Pearce on her baptism in an open air service at St Giles Graffham on Sunday 11th October 2020. The Pearce family has long-standing connections with Graffham so we are delighted parents Jenny and Luke have brought Rebecca to be bap-tised here. See the beautiful baptism candles prepared by Rebecca's family, lit at her baptism as a sign Rebecca and sisters Anna and Lizzie carry Christ's light into the world.

Raising Money for Brain Tumour Research

In 2019 our daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer. Since then we have come to realise that only 1% of the government budget for cancer research goes towards funding brain tumour research.

So myself, sons Mark and Robert, and Robert’s girlfriend Sam, com-pleted a 30 mile walk to raise funds towards brain tumour research. Between us we raised £700 plus £100 towards the charity, to total £800. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 then any other cancer. With people’s help and fundraising there will hopefully one day be a cure to this evil disease. I wish to thank everyone who donated towards our walk of hope, and hopefully when Covid-19 allows us to do more events, I will do so. Lets find a cure.Heather Russell, 12 Guillods, Graffham

Graffham Junior Tennis Tournaments

Sunday 27th September saw the finals’ day for the girls’ and boys’ singles tennis tournaments. A sharp northerly wind raced across the rec towards the courts and the spectators mourned the absence of the usual tea coffee and cakes.

The players though, adapted their styles to cope with the conditions and the girls’ final, contested over the best of three sets, saw some beautiful strokes from both of the Amin girls. Olive emerged the winner 6-0, 6-1, though Maizie has surely laid claim to the title in the next few years. The boys’ semi-finals took place on the same day, over one set, with Lawrence Bates winning over Jasper Steyn in the first and Theo Longman battling it out with last year’s winner, Joseph Steyn in the second. These boys played an intriguing match, mixing up their shots and taking advantage of the headwind to drop shot their opponent. In the end Theo emerged the winner and went on to face Lawrence over the best of three sets in the final.

Theo continued with some clever ball placement but in the end Law-rence’s baseline strokes, which seemed to magically fall just inside the baseline, were the determining factor. Lawrence is certainly our youngest ever winner and too many more boys’ victories will see him rapidly pro-moted to the senior tournament! Well done to all of our competitors.

Petworth Area Churches Together

Petworth Food BankGeoff and Gill Pye and their team continue to do great work administer-ing Food Bank donations in Petworth. In addition, there is a new scheme which enables payment instead of physical donations. You can find out more and make a one-off or regular donation by visiting the website and selecting Chichester Food Bank so that it gets to help our local communi-ty: www.bankuet.co.uk

Support from the Food Bank is likely to become an even greater need as the Government Furlough Scheme ends with an estimated 4 million people out of work by Christmas. Thank you to everyone who is able to contribute to this.

Week of Prayer for Christian UnityAn advance date for the diary – Sunday 17th January 2021 is the launch service and plans for the complete week will become clear based on Covid-regulations nearer the time. The theme is ‘Abide in my love….you shall bear much fruit’ from John 15 – once again a great opportunity to go deeper in your relationship with Jesus and with those in the communi-ty around you.

‘You didn’t choose me, but I’ve chosen and commissioned you to go into the world to bear fruit. And your fruit will last, because whatever you ask of my Father, for my sake, he will give it to you. So this is my parting command; Love one another deeply!’ John 15:16-17.

Food Waste and Covid-19

The last few weeks and months have been filled with questions and les-sons. How do you make a facemask? How to keep a harmonious atmos-phere when locked in with family? How to make banana bread? How to use leftovers?

These questions have been searched by so many and every person has learnt something new. The positives that have come out of this tough situation are how we have all learnt to adapt and be creative. Many of us have created some of the best (and worst) meals during lockdown, using tins that have been hidden for months. According to Wrap’s study on how consumer’s food habits have altered during Covid-19, we have learnt great lessons. Many people have begun freezing ingredients and whole meals so they don’t go out of date and can be used another time. Others have started making shopping lists consistently for the first time. Some are saving leftovers they never normally would and are getting creative with when to reuse them. Reducing everyone’s ability to shop and the possibility of product shortages has made us think differently about wast-ing things.

This has resulted in 36% of people in the UK stating they are throwing away less food – 36% is around 1 in 3 people who are saving money, helping the environment and stopping to think about food as something we should value more than what we currently do.

What the Waste Prevention Team have found most shocking on reflec-tion is the amount of times per week the team would buy food. These food shops could have been the main shop, top-up shops, lunchtime meal deals when forgetting lunch, or snack runs for an impromptu film night. Purchasing food around 4-5 times a week, not including possible restaurant visits. This wasn’t uncommon. We rush around, knowing we will be able to buy food whenever and wherever we are. This change has made us think.

Wrap’s study also found frequency of shopping has decreased sub-stantially, while the amount of food purchased per shop has increased. The food purchased has been more carefully considered, and thanks to creating a shopping list everything has been remembered!

Page 27: RAFFHAM...4 Regular Activities in The Empire Hall Mondays9.15 – 10.05 PRIMAL BOOT CAMP Ben Banbury 07817 877420 Tuesdays 8.30 – 12.00 POST OFFICE Wednesdays 18.30 – …

26

So, going forward we have challenged ourselves to keep our new good habits. Like 47% of people surveyed the Team will check in cupboards before shopping. Like 37% of people they will see if new fun meals can be created using random ingredients that would otherwise go to waste.

Our main goal though is to buy food less and only buy the food we need! This will save money, save the planet and save precious time.

What changes have you made in lockdown? What changes will you be keeping? Email: [email protected] with any tips you have or advice you would like!

The title of the quiz is also in the form of an anagram that gives a clue as to the category of things being sought. The number of letters in each answer will also hopefully provide a clue as will the total number of clues and some of the individual clues them-selves as well as certain peculiarities of spelling.Answers on the inside back page of this issue.

CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL FRIENDS –SUPPORTING OUR CATHEDRAL

The Friends’ constitution states that its primary objective is “to assist and support the Dean and Chapter in maintaining and improving facilities and services, and to develop and promote the Cathedral’s mission.”

The most tangible and visible way in which the Friends do this is through its project funding and recent activities in this regard have been considerable.

Specifically, the projects that the Friends have funded over the last year are many and varied and represent a monetary value well in excess of £200,000. Included in this are:

• Sponsorship of last year’s highly successful Southern Cathedrals’ Festival • Refurbishment of the Vicars Hall Kitchen • Nave seating frontals• New cassocks for the Vergers• Weekday chasubles• New altar linen cloth • Chorister scholarship• The majority of the costs for the new Cathedral database project

The Friends take pride in the grants that have been made to the Dean and Chapter in the last year, none of which would have been possible without the support of the members of the Friends.

For further information about what the Friends do and how to join, please visit the Cathedral website (www.chichestercathedral.org.uk) and select ‘Getting involved’.

The Friends are a registered charity. Membership costs £15 per year and £25 for a couple.

The Greatest Gift

Farnham Maltings & Graffham Empire Hall invites you to The Greatest Gift, a re-telling of the original story behind It’s a Wonderful Life.

‘Welcome to Bedford Falls. Welcome to small town America. Welcome to Farnham Maltings’ winter retelling of the story of George Bailey, a middle-aged clerk discovering the difference he has made to his fami-ly, his friends and his home town – with a little help from Clarence, the apprentice angel.’

Join us on Friday 4th December at one of two performances starting at either 5.30pm or 8.00pm for a warming 60 minutes of storytelling with Mick Strobel and live music from accordionist Nigel Waterhouse.

A gift from us to you this Christmas. There is no charge for the performance, but the Empire Hall will be

seeking donations to cover the cost of hall use. Details of how to book seats and required steps to achieve Covid risk

mitigation procedures will be available in November, please enquire via [email protected] or 867026.
