The Raglan Old School Arts Centre has three great nights

of movies lined up this week. Here is the lowdown…

Music lovers won’t want to miss Thursday night’s showing of 2014 Oscar winner Twenty Feet from Stardom, a film that shines a spotlight on the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century.

The documentary includes rare archival footage and intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting.

“A ringing, resounding tribute to a handful of (predominantly African American) women who have become what might be called household voices, all the while remaining unknown names. Sweet, sad, thrilling, energising, unmissable. Recommended.” 4.5/5 stars. New Zealand Herald.

Kayaks, bikes flip in wild Raglanweather but race chiefs unfazed

Secondary school teams setting off on a mountain bike leg around the Whaanga Coast Road.

Kayaks were flipped in the harbour, several people were blown off their mountain-bikes

and riders also faced a complete “white-out” at Te Uku wind farm on the top of the Wharauroa Plateau but organisers of the big ARC adventure race based around Raglan at the weekend were unbothered by it all.

Some might say it was “a bit reckless” to go ahead with the annual event as Cyclone Lusi bore down on the country and locals were warned to batten down the hatches, co-organiser Keith Stephenson acknowledged to the Chronicle.

But Keith said that he, fellow organiser Andy Reid and their Adventure Racing Coromandel support crew were confident they had all contingencies covered in this their 14th year of the race, which was being held in Raglan for the first time.

Keith pointed out he was in town all last week, in touch with the local Coastguard and being advised by the most up-to-date MetService data.

Changes were in fact made along the way because of the weather forecast, he said, with Saturday’s dawn kayakers setting off from Kopua footbridge on a shortened course and the last six hours of the 24-hour race wiped completely because of the conditions.

Even so a third of the dawn kayaking fleet capsized up-harbour and two Coastguard jetskis and an ARC inflatable rescue boat were kept busy helping right the craft, though Keith emphasised most kayakers would have been able to do so themselves.

The 24-hour entrants – the first of whom finished the course in Pirongia at 2am on Sunday – didn’t do a night kayak down the Waipa River or an extra mountain-bike and trek that was to follow. They were at risk of hypothermia when competing in such extreme weather conditions, said Keith, and using “a helluva lot more energy getting from A to B”.

Marshals and roving paramedics were on hand throughout the course, he added, and radio communication kept everyone in the loop.

Keith admitted there were “pretty hefty blows” up on Mt Karioi to challenge competitors early on as they trekked from the Te Toto Gorge to the Te Mata side of the mountain. That leg of the race was sandwiched between two mountain-biking stages which saw some competitors blown off their bikes in the gusts.

Those crashes didn’t faze Keith any more than the kayaking capsizes. “Most (competitors) will wear battle wounds before the finishline,” he quipped, pointing out accidents could equally happen while entrants were out training.

After biking roads and farmland to the Bridal Veil Falls, competitors had to plunge under the falls to reach a checkpoint. “Each checkpoint they get to is worth time credits,” Keith explained.

More mountain-biking took competitors up to the top of the wind farm 430 metres

above sea level, where they could hear only the ‘whoosh’ of the giant turbines as little as 10 metres away. “It was all compass work up there, which was good,” says Keith.

Then it was down to Vandy and Waitetuna Valley Roads, and around to the Karamu Caves. That’s where the two eight-hour races – one with the traditional kayak leg, the other using standup paddleboards in Kopua estuary – ended, though not before caving,

rock-climbing and rifle-shooting disciplines. Those in the 12-hour adventure race

carried on trekking the Four Brothers Track – finishing on top of Old Mountain Road – while the 24-hour contenders biked to the base of Pirongia before trekking the mountain a final six or seven hours.

One four-person team however made a ‘navigational error’ on Mt Pirongia, breaking out onto farmland at daylight to find they faced

a 35-kilometre trek back to the finish line at Pirongia. Needless to say they weren’t at prize-giving back in

Raglan late Sunday morning, said Keith. More than 200 endurance junkies came to Raglan to

tackle the series of tough land and water-based challenges, in teams mostly of four but also of two and three. None knew the exact course until registration the night before, but all were kitted out with the survival gear they needed for what is known as the adventure of a lifetime.

Many of the 100-odd teams involved were made up of secondary school students and they “had a ball”, said Keith who reckoned the conditions were perfect for outdoor education. “It made them a bit more alert, conscious of safety and looking out for each other.”

He now wants to encourage them over to Coromandel to enter the North Island Secondary School Adventure Racing Championships in September. Edith Symes

Raglan seen as ideal foradventure race of own

ARC adventure race co-organiser Keith Stephenson was impressed with Raglan’s “au naturel” environment for the race, which has been held away from the Coromandel only three times since the gruelling event began in 2000.

“I can see Raglan doing a (regular) six or eight-hour adventure race here,” he said, looking to the future. “Raglan could have three or four teams of its own … and it’s great exposure for the young ones.”

While Raglan had no competitors in the adventure race, local sports events promoter Lisa Thomson organised a group of Raglan-based volunteers to help out around the course.

Keith said he and all the ARC crew were especially grateful to local landowners with whom they negotiated for more than six months to get the course finalised.

Bigger prize pot adds to Art to Wear’s allure

‘Bensemen Thing 3’ and ‘Thing 4’ from the 2012 Art To Wear show

R ichard Christie has broken a five year drought winning

the Rip Curl Pro presented by Jagermeister held at Manu Bay, Raglan on Saturday.

Under dark skies, gale offshore winds and sideways rain thanks to Cyclone Lusi, Christie surfed his way to a win in the Open Men’s Division in the 1.0m – 1.5m waves that built throughout the day. Christie surfed to a 12.34 point heat total in the final, a modest score for the day but indicative of the challenging conditions as Cyclone Lusi ripped through the Waikato with gusts of 40 knots buffeting the waves.

Event favourite Billy Stairmand made a shock exit in the semifinals of the Open Men’s Division placing seventh overall. Meanwhile,

Jessica Santorik placed third in the Open Women’s Division.

A third consecutive win on the New Zealand Pro Series has seen Whangamata surfer Grace Spiers open up a massive lead on the ratings after her victory in the Open Women’s Division. Spiers first won the National Championships at Gisborne in January before winning the second event at Whangamata in February and Saturdays win at the Rip Curl Pro. “Those were some of the most difficult conditions to compete in, you could hardly walk down the rocks let alone surf, on the waves. It was hard to stay low and you couldn’t even hit the top of the wave, bit different for the boys who have a bit more weight but definitely hard for us girls” said Spiers.

The Rip Curl Pro is contested

over the Open Men’s and Women’s Divisions as well as the Under 20 Men’s Division. The three day event offers $12,000 in prize money spread across the three divisions.

The “fantastic” prizes on offer this year could well tempt more young artists about

town to enter Raglan’s biennial Art To Wear competition in May and to have fun with fashion, says organiser Jean Carbon.

Jean, a fabric artist herself, says creations need not cost a lot or take too much time to make but will put entrants in line for some lucrative awards – thanks to generous sponsorship and a “sizeable” amount of money on offer this time around from Raglan Lions, whose op shop has had a great summer.

Besides a supreme award now upped to $1200, the people’s choice award comes for the first time with a $500 cash prize as well as a trophy and there’ll be first, second and third section prizes as well.

LJ Hooker have also come onboard as a major sponser this year.

Jean believes the local event is at as good a level – financially and creatively – as many other wearable arts competitions in New Zealand, and says having more of the local schools come on board recently has been great. “It’s a wonderful feeling to have that community support.”

Raglan Area School excelled itself last time around with its own wearable arts show as a forerunner to the main

event, she explains. Jean now hopes to see local

businesses getting their staff working collaboratively on creations, and young artists in town taking the opportunity to create their own original pieces.

This year’s ‘Rummage’ section sponsored by Xtreme Zero Waste means entrants can experiment with recycled materials picked up for next to nothing, while the new ‘Over the Top’ section allows for unconventional hat entries.

“We felt it (making hats or headpieces) was a clever idea that could be created effectively and quickly,” Jean told the Chronicle, recalling a shark or orca sculpture worn on the head in the past.

Then there’s the ‘White Light’ section which will provide a “stunning” effect, Jean promises – the colour white picked up with black light and illuminated. A new advertising poster has also gone with the white theme.

Add in a section for ‘Heroes and Icons’ and an under-13 ‘Mahy Mayhem’ section and that ensures there’s something for everyone, says Jean. “Let’s make this wearable arts event the best yet.” E. Symes

2014 Art To Wear will be held in Raglan Town Hall on the last weekend of May, Friday 30 (dress rehearsal) and Saturday 31.

Raglan’s bridge to bridge harbour swim is on again the weekend after next –

and organisers are hoping a good crowd will mean a silver lining. A blue liner for the school pool, to be exact.

The Raglan Swimming Club says while last year’s inaugural swim attracted 72 entrants, only a quarter of those were town residents and it’s keen to see more locals turn out on Saturday week for what should be “a really fun day”.

Through a series of events from 250 metres up to two kilometres the fledgling club’s looking to raise the final $6000 of the $21,000 cost of pouring a sheet-like lining that will hold the warmth in for longer and extend the swimming season at the 22-metre pool well into autumn.

Fundraising committee member Lisa Thomson says the aim is to provide a “much more comfortable learning environment”. Even with the new bubble wrap-like pool cover that was able to be installed as a result of last year’s harbour

swim, the club’s youngster ranks have swollen from 40ish to more than 90 this summer, she says.

“A warmer pool has a real big impact on the people doing lane swimming, who come in consistently on Sunday, Monday and Wednesday evenings,” Lisa adds.

“The pool is a great resource for the community and we’re passionate about making it warmer, especially so our children can learn to swim safely.”

With a $15,000 grant from the Wel Energy Trust and a small amount from Trust Waikato the liner project is already well on the way, and organisers hope a bigger turnout of locals for this year’s harbour swim will help turn it into a reality.

“We’re wanting to attract our local schoolkids in particular along to the harbour swim,” says Lisa. “If they can swim 200 metres they’re all good to go.”

Under-13s will swim various distances from the Kopua footbridge towards the boat ramp, while the

1km, 1.5km and 2km open events are based on a course running from the footbridge to the new museum and then on up to the Raglan West traffic bridge (the 2km swimmers go beyond it) before returning to the footbridge. All courses will be marked out by large buoys.

Entry fees will range from $5-10 for under-13s and $10-20 for events from 500 metres up.

There’ll be certificates for winners and participants, “amazing” spot prizes and raffles, and harbour swim T-shirts for sale. More FM, which is supporting the swim, will also be there.

Late registrations will be taken from 8 to 8.55am, then there’ll be a karakia and race briefing at 9 before the first swim begins at 9.05. Organisers say all events and prizegiving should be completed 12.30ish “just in time for that picnic you packed or fish and chips at Jo’s Kopua Campstore”. Edith Symes

Raglan netball starting soonThank you to all the girls who

attended the netball muster last week. We had a fantastic turnout and it looks like we will be growing from 4 teams to 7 this year.

For the next three Wednesdays we will be having pre- season training, skills and drills from 4 to 5pm for Years 4-8 and 5 to 6pm for seniors . All new players are welcome.

Teams will be decided over the

next 3 weeks and your coach will then be in contact with you.

We are now actively seeking sponsorship, no matter how big or small to get us moving towards a successful 2014 and to lay the foundations of the years ahead.

Great to see Netball strong in Raglan, we look forward to a top season.

Please contact Jo Reiri Principal at Waitetuna on 8255827 if you are able to help.

Raglan’s Old School Arts Centre is set to host one of its most

ambitious exhibitions at the end of this month.

365 Degrees. A Moment, a Day, a Year,

showcases a year’s worth of photography by Raglan writer and mixed media artist Katherine Parrott. As the name implies that’s 365 photos and yes, every single one of them will be in the show.

Katherine started her huge undertaking on 22 March 2013 aiming to capture one moment that summed up each day. She says, “Taking a photograph every day becomes a practice and an intention that works both to help me notice the beauty in every day and to create it. Looking through the viewfinder hones my vision, makes me notice things I would otherwise miss. As a big-picture person, it has helped me see details and tiny snatches of beauty that otherwise may have passed my global brain by. I look back on the images and think I’m so glad I captured that.”

Living rurally near Raglan, many of Katherine’s photos feature local landscapes, people and places. Her 365 days will finish just one week before the exhibition opens. She comments, “You end up constantly looking for the moment that will sum up each day: the image that will express what

has been happening, what I’m feeling or what I have to say. Often, this refers to the so-called small or everyday parts of life. For me, it is about consciously making the ordinary and everyday as beautiful and extraordinary as I can.”

No stranger to the world of exhibiting, Katherine is an award-winning quilt maker and has shown her art both nationally and internationally. She has been documenting her 365 project on social media and through her website, where images from each day, along with their respective stories, can be found.

365 Degrees. A Moment, a Day, a Year opens on Friday 28 March, 6.30pm at the Old School Arts Centre on Stewart Street, Raglan. All welcome: live music, canapés and cash bar. The exhibition runs daily until Sunday 13 April, 10am-3pm. For a preview of Katherine’s work, head to her website: www.katherineparrott.com.

For more details, please contact Katherine Parrott 021 300 981 or by emailing [email protected] E. Brooks

The completion date of Whaanga Coast’s new wastewater system has been pushed back to May allowing existing property owners extra time to join the scheme.

Contractors Spartan Construction have installed nearly three quarters of the main sewer line along Wainui Road and Upper Wainui Road, and are nearing completion of the booster pump station adjacent to Manu Bay Reserve.

Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery Tim Harty says he’s pleased with the work that has been completed to date however a couple of issues have slowed the work temporarily.

“The project was scheduled for March completion however we’ve experienced a couple of setbacks including product delays and the need to finalise discussions with a group of property owners. To date, 70 residential and two commercial properties have signed up to the scheme - two thirds of those connections are now installed and one system (the new kindergarten) is up and running.”

He says the delay does have a positive spinoff for property owners still considering whether or not to join the scheme. “If they (existing property owners) join the scheme before construction ends, they’re eligible for a subsidised connection price.”

Raglan Community House is pleased to announce that the

next ‘Downsize Me’ challenge starts Thursday 27th March at 5.30pm. The challenge will run for 10 weeks until 29th May. If you are looking to reach or maintain a healthier weight in 2014, now is your chance to further your goal. This year our challenge is being supported by Sport Waikato and the Active and Well Green Prescription Programme.

The group is friendly, non-judgmental

and the only person you are “competing” with is yourself. Week 1 sees weigh-in and measuring (optional). We will give you a booklet to record your details, your goals and your plan and will take you through this. You will also be given the opportunity to join the Green Prescription programme free. Thereafter, each week at 5.30pm, you will weigh in and we will then have a guest speaker, or activity, at 6.00pm.

If Thursdays don’t work for you but you would still like to take part in the Challenge, come and see us here at Raglan Community House. We are happy to

arrange a day/time that is convenient for you and will give you a copy of any info or handouts which are made available to the Thursday group.

During the challenge we ask for a $2 donation towards the cost of the prize for the challenge winner / runner up and we are very grateful to Hayley from Heavenly for her continued support of our challenge. There is no charge for attending the ongoing support group once the challenge is over. So make a date with yourself for Thursday 27th March. See you there!

Tonight (Thursday 20 March) we have Renee Coffey doing

the Raglan part of her North Island Roadie Tour. Renee is a Wellington based musician who is quickly making a name for herself with her reflective soulful songwriting and guitar work. Check her out on you tube particularly her epic take on Hallelulah.

Friday we have local superstar djs and men about town Reuben and Dylan Brown aka the Brown Brothers bring their Party Rocking beats to the Yot Club. Always a busy night, this is well worth checking out.

On Saturday we have Bulletproof (Aka Jay Cyanide) in the club. Having collaborated with the likes of Pendulum, Concord Dawn, The Upbeats, DJ Optiv (C4C), Mayhem, State of Mind and Agent Alvin Bulletproof have proved he is a name amongst THE names and undoubtedly one of the finest D&B talents to emerge from the Southern Hemisphere.

And on Sunday…DJ VADIM - Sunday Session - March 23rd .. did we just say DJ Vadim?. You heard it!

With only 2 Sunday Sessions left for the Summer; this one is lining up to be yet an other highlight!

“Jamin-i Presents” the biggest International name to visit the Yot Club yard yet - DJ Vadim is a veteran producer and Dj.

He’s been in the scene for close to 20 years and has toured the world

across more than 60 countries. To describe the man as an internationalist almost seems to sell him short. A guy of this calibre playing in a village our size just can’t be missed!

With such a wide range of music, you can catch him this Sunday playing both in the yard and in the club.

Also to top it up; we are treated with the support of “The Uplifter”a DJ/percussionist straight from UK also on a NZ Tour.

Sunday Session Free from 4.20pm $10 after 8.30pm (so if you’re clever; then come early!)

Open every day from midday (late nights from Wednesday ‘til Sunday) with free wifi, free pool, cheap drinks, great music, yummy pizza and many other food options - come check out our menu!

Clean-A-Dog: Mobile dog bath and groomers

We are precious, so are they, so give your dog a

treat today!Clean-a-dog mobile dog bath

and groomers are coming to Anexa Animal Health Raglan Tuesday 25th March. We will be coming every last Tuesday of the month to provide a full professional grooming service for your loved dogs. Bookings can be made by ringing 0800 101045.

Clean-a-dog is a husband wife team bringing our professional

mobile dog grooming service. Brett Gomas has been grooming for 15 years firstly with a franchise then in the early 2000’s forming and starting his own mobile grooming business along with his wife Helen. Right from a kid Brett has been a dog lover and has had family pets from Great Danes, poodles, boxers, fox-terriers now their family includes a 10 year old rottweiler sire.

All the grooming is done in the warm and cosy enclosed dog friendly van. Fresh warm water

is used in the hydro-bath which massages as it cleans. Great pamper for all dogs, especially for arthritic or aging dogs (special care for any health issues).

Your dog benefits from only safe non-toxic shampoos used on them every time! Blow dry removes loose hair and stimulates a healthy coat.

The Waikato Sport Fishing Club’s annual SIMRAD

Raglan One Base tournament, hosted by the Raglan Club Inc. saw outstanding weather conditions for two days with a turnout of 131 anglers, and a cancelled third day due to the predicted atrocious weather conditions from Cyclone Lusi.

The team from Murray Wallace’s Plan Sea were heavily in the money with a stonker of an albacore at 10.14kg and taking out the entire ‘Kingfish Section’ with himself in third place with a 10.4 kg fish and Tim Stace with a 11.03 kg fish and Andy Anderson with a respectable 13.85 kg fish.

Meanwhile the battle for second and third heaviest albacore was again fiercely fought with third place

Sandra Law’s 8.13 kg specimen being narrowly beaten by an 8.33 kg fish. There were some outstanding albacore floating around but they took a bit of finding.

Up and coming junior angler, Corey Hartgill gave all the adults a lesson on skipjack tuna fishing by winning the heaviest fish on both days and taking first place overall with a very respectable 5.07 kg fish closely followed by Greg Mcleod in second place with a 4.38 kg fish and Sean Carnell only 0.08 kg behind with 4.3 kg fish.

Legendary junior fisherman Ethan Rendall took out the most points for a junior by tagging and releasing two kingfish and a blue shark.

Meanwhile leading women’s angler for top points was Heidi Robinson for tagging a striped marlin and blue shark. Heidi’s accumulated

points were also enough to take out most points overall for the tournament and also to make ‘Shogun’ top boat for the tournament as well

The $4000 team draw proved to be most entertaining. Ten teams from the pool of 39 were whittled down to the last three standing. Third place draw of $500 Simrad Product Voucher went to team ‘Amnesia’. Second place draw of $1000 Simrad Product Voucher went to the crew of ‘Kia Ora’, with the major prize of a SIMRAD NSS 8 package going to last man standing the team of ‘Excalibur’.

The Waikato Sport Fishing Club would like to thank SIMRAD, our other sponsors, our volunteer weigh masters and radio operators. Also thanks to the Raglan Club Inc. for helping us produce a very enjoyable event.
