My respected Brothers and Sisters,Assalaamu ‘alaikum

It is by the grace of the Almighty SWT alone that I am absolutely delighted to present to you this year’s Rahma (Mercy) Annual Report and update. Once again, it is with His mercy that we have enjoyed yet another successful year whereby much has been achieved. I am always humbled and proud by the support given to this project and by the backing and willingness of the wider Muslim community. We all pray that the Most Merciful SWT continues to enable and empower you all to carry on donating not only your money, but your precious time and support – Ameen!

As Rahma enters into its twelfth year, I am still surprised and thrilled to see it develop, evolve and thrive in the way in which it has. What excites me further is the future vision of transforming a region that was until the late 1990s so far from the right path into a vibrant, self-sustaining Islamic community.

I wanted this year’s message to be slightly different from previous years. Yes, there will be the customary plea and request for donations, support and prayers, but contained within will also be a celebration of some excellent achievements, progress and some very personal milestones. I am proud to say that the project to open Masjid Salim has been a resounding success and that the Masjid is now open and serving the Muslims of that area.

Over the years, Rahma has seen many mosques open, however, a personal favourite of mine has been the opening of what has fondly become known as ‘Masjid Hindi’. I was surprised to learn that within Albania there is an Indian gypsy community that has been there for over 500 years. They live in small, rundown township-like communities, similar to Soweto in South Africa. We came across them and what we encountered was truly amazing. The Albanian Indians were so overjoyed to see other Indian people, that they openly embraced us and wept at seeing other Indians. Crowds gathered around all hugging and kissing us in Islamic unity, treating us like royalty and we met Muslims called Raj, Dilip and so on. It was humbling to meet a people that had a real hunger for Islam and who whole heartedly welcomed us.We have many ongoing projects in orphan sponsorship, water wells and sanitation and these continue to go from strength to strength, and provide vital support to those who are in absolute and dire need.

I would also like to report that within Kosovo, Rahma has transferred the running of Islamic duties to the local people, but we still maintain control over welfare, such as orphan sponsorships and food parcels.

This brings me on to our ambitious plans going forward and, Inshallah, I hope you are able to share and more importantly support our vision. Our aim is to build a multi-purpose centre that will provide both a critical support function to the local Muslims and will foster a positive social and enterprising environment. Further details are within the report.

Finally, I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks to everyone who has donated and continues to donate to make this project a reality and a success. Without your support and duas, this would still remain a dream. Please continue to support this valuable work and spread the word about Rahma beyond your families and friends, I cannot emphasise enough how crucial this is. I sincerely pray that Allah accepts all of your efforts however large or small – Ameen! Wasalaam - Moulana Khalil Patel

Once again, it is with HIS mercy that we have enjoyed yet another

successful year whereby much has been achieved.

Right up until the end of his life, he was passionate about his Islam and even in his final days he would often give explanations on hadith or verses of the Quran. Moulana lived a very full and active life, and he travelled regularly. Sadly, he became a kidney dialysis patient in 2007, and his movements became restricted.

In December 2009, he returned from Pakistan and from then on his health worsened as he became weak and frail. During his stay in hospital he was particular about cleanliness and his satr being covered at all times. A week before his passing from this world, Moulana sahib’s health seemed to have become much better. He was much happier, eating better and in generally in good spirit.

During the last week of his life, he often mentioned sightings of angels and would seem to be describing heavenly abode, whilst also mentioning Alam-e-Barzak and the angel of death.

One particular incident seems very significant in hindsight. About four days before his demise, Moulana mentioned to his family that he had been visited by Malik-ul-Mawt, Moulana mentioned that he asked the angel if he would take him that day, the angel replied that he would come on the 17th. Subhanallah, four days later on the 17th of Safar.

Moulana Sahib passed away peacefully before Maghrib on the 17th Safar 1431 -2 February 2010.

This year saw the sad passing of Moulana Abdul-Rahman sahib, a personality who was larger than life and integral to the whole Rahma project. We pay tribute to him and provide a glimpse into his life. Moulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Rahman sahib was a descendant of the prophet (SAW) from his grandson Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (RA).

Born in the city of Faisalabad in Punjab, Pakistan on 30 April 1943, Moulana Abdul Rahman was from a family of respected and well accomplished Ulaama. Sadly, Moulana Abdul Rahman was born an orphan as his father had died 19 days before his birth

His education began at an early age in maktab where he completed his hifz at the age of 9, and soon after began his alim class studies. Moulana Abdul Rahman studied at the Khairul Madaris in Multan, Pakistan and within his early 20s became a Khateeb and Imam at Salsabeel Masjid in Faisalabad.

Upon his arrival in England and after a brief stay in Birmingham, he was invited by the committee of Masjid-ul-Falah in Leicester, where he was appointed as Imam. He remained there for several years, and his family joined him from Pakistan in 1994. In 1995, Moulana moved once again, this time as Imam for Masjid Abu Bakr, Leicester.

In 1997, he was appointed as Imam of Masjid-ul-Bukhari, Leicester. He remained Imam of Masjid-ul-Bukhari for 10 years until his health deteriorated and he retired from his Imam duties in 2007.

During his lifetime, Moulana Abdul Rahman through the grace of the Almighty performed 18 hajj pilgrimages in 19 years, and had travelled to Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, India, Kosovo, Albania, Syria, and Turkey. He was well loved by all - friends, family, the young and the old.

His knowledge of tareekh and seerah was outstanding and he was often consulted by other Ulaama regarding matters of deen. He knew of many opinions regarding deeni matters and would often be able to comment on masail without even consulting his kitaabs. He was famous for staying up all night when reading new kitaabs

“Every soul shall taste death. And We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. To Us must

you return.” 21:36

We continually monitor the children and their progress in order to ensure that they are rightfully in receipt of support.Sponsorship can be set up by completing a standing order form to make regular payments from your bank. There is no minimum period of sponsorship; sponsors can decide to stop and Rahma (Mercy) will continue to support the child.

Your continued support makes a significant difference to the lives of these children who are struggling to improve their lives against heavy odds. We and they really appreciate it – please keep this up!

“I and the person who cares for an orphan will enter Jannah together

like this (holding his forefinger and middle

finger together).”

(Bukhari vol. 7 no. 224)

Rahma (Mercy) initially started out by sponsoring approximately 50 or so orphans. Thanks to the Almighty, year on year this number has gradually increased, and we are now currently providing for 290 orphans in Kosovo and 260 in Albania.

Each child receives £17 per month (working out at just 56 pence per day/ £204 per year) this sum helps meet the basic needs of each child. Sponsorship money is paid directly to the orphan or their guardian.

Caring for an orphan is considered to be one

of the best forms of charity in the Islamic

tradition.

Kosovo and Albania were cruel victims of and badly affected by communism, and as a result nearly all the Masaajid in these parts were destroyed. More recently, Rahma (Mercy) has sought to turn this around and taken the initiative to build brand new Masaajid in these countries.

To date, 13 Masaajid have been built in areas where previously there was no Masjid for the local villagers to attend. However, each of these Masjid now proudly serve a village of approximately 75 – 150 homes. There are still many areas throughout Albania where people sadly do not have access to a Masjid; and it is important that such areas have a Masjid in order not only to establish prayer but to foster a strong community spirit and to enable people to work together to meet the many varying needs of the community.

Therefore, with your help, Rahma (Mercy) intends to build more Masaajid in the coming year. Each Masjid costs approximately £50,000 to build and we request your generous support with this most righteous and rewarding project.

“Whoever builds a Masjid for the sake of Allah,

Allah will build for him a house in Paradise”

(Bukhari & Muslim)

With Thanks

Our most recent Masjid was built in Elbasan which serves approximately 600 homes and cost £50,000 which was generously donated by the friends of Leicester. The completion of the building was in March 2009 and an opening ceremony was held. Hundreds of people attended the event, including all the families of the local area and many government officials. The opening of this Masjid has we are delighted to say has taken the devotion and practice of the locals to a much higher platform, and the new Masjid was received with feelings of great happiness and joy. (If you would like to see the opening, a CD can be obtained from the office).

We at Rahma (Mercy) would like to thank the people from Leicester for their generosity and support.

May the Almighty elevate your status in this world and in the next – Ameen!

A critical project for the Muslims of the region as this is the only source of revival and propagation of Islam.

Due to the impact of communism, Islam was almost wiped out from these lands – leaving many people ignorant and uneducated in terms of deen. Prior to opening our Madaaris, many people sadly didn’t even know the shahadah, and this has been reported by a recent delegation from Makkah that visited the south of Albania.

However, and thankfully, through the impact of the Madaaris and by the Grace of the Almighty (SWT), many children can now read Qur’an, and now know the essential aspects of their faith and many of them dress in the Islamic attire. Furthermore the more advanced students have now become teachers and lead small classes of their own. Above all the zeal and passion for Islam portrayed by them is both phenomenal and an inspiration!

At the end of each Madressah year a presentation day (Jalsa) is held by the children, where they sing nasheeds, recite poetry and speak on various subjects within Islam. As always the last presentation day, saw a joyous atmosphere and the families of the children were in high spirits. Finally, as way of rewarding the children we take them on a picnic to a national park where they get the opportunity to play sports and the chance to relax. We aim to reward the children for their progress and efforts throughout the year in Madressah, and this is a big source of encouragement for them to work harder for the next year. It is so very encouraging for us to see the enthusiasm and the happiness of our less fortunate brothers and sisters.

The demand for the Madressah project in Kosovo and Albania is high and growing rapidly. More villages are in need of Madaaris. This project is essential for the revival of Islam in Albania and Kosovo.

Each Madressah costs approximately £2,500 per year to maintain, this covers wages for teachers, rent, prizes for exams, wood for heating in the winter and incentives for students. We request your generous support for such a noble and righteous cause. It is important to note that the children are eligible for Zakaat and their education cost is £110 per year.per child.

Madressah Hindi

“We the students of Hindi Madrasah want to thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to learn about our beautiful religion Islam. We have started to learn Arabic and we are also learning how to pray namaz. We just want to say how much we appreciate what you have done for us.” With due respect and love - Student at Madressah Hindi

Madressah

Since the initiation of the Madressah Project in April 2000, we have seen a significant increase in the number of students. From having only one Madressah of 20 students; Rahma now has over 37 Madaaris with a total of approximately 2000 students across Albania and Kosovo and the demand for Madaris is increasing fast!

Shegune School is a primary school currently under construction and based outside the city of Elbasan.

It was a village in dire need and one that did not have a primary school at all. The community approached Rahma requesting to build a school for them as was done in Griqan – an existing school which was expanded and developed by Rahma.

The cost of the school is 30,000 Euros and construction is underway. Inshallah the project will be complete by the end of Ramadhan 2010.

This will bring education and vast opportunities to the people and especially the children of this village.

We are delighted to be able to report that the foundation was laid in May 2010. The new school will be able to accommodate up to 150 children with its capacity.

Water is a vital component for survival and to prevent the spread of diseases. This year we managed to build 15 new water wells providing clean drinking water for hundreds.

We intend to continue our efforts of providing fresh water resources. The cost of each water well is approximately £1,300; however one can donate as much as one can afford towards this project, there is no minimum amount.

He who performed ablution for prayer and performed it properly and then went (to observe) obligatory prayer and offered it along with people or with the congregation or in the mosque, Allah would pardon his sins.

Qurbani

Last year we managed to carry out numerous Qurbanis and this benefited hundreds of families in the poorest regions of Kosovo and Albania - areas where meat is a rare luxury. We at Rahma would like to kindly encourage people to consider the poor people of this region and for them to give their Qurbani to them.

Please remember that these people are so poor that they very rarely have the opportunity to eat or enjoy meat. The Muslims of Kosovo and Albania are our nearest neighbours and we have a duty to help them, and revive a practice of Islam and help the poor on the joyous occasion of `Eid-ul-Adha.

The cost of each Qurbani this year will be approximately £82 (£574 for whole animal). The Qurbani will be performed and distributed according to Shari`ah and in the presence of ‘Ulaama.

Please note that, although Qurbani is cheaper in some other countries, it is more rewarding where there is a greater need.

Iaari Food Parcels & Clothes Distribution

Health

Money that has been donated has also gone towards providing basic healthcare to the local people. Funds have been used to help treat sick children, in particular a case that required treatment for kidney stones. The cost of this treatment came to £1200 and this was kindly donated by a brother from Leicester.

Due to the condition of Albania, there are many general health problems. Money is spent on medication to provide basics such as medicines, glasses and supplies.

Last Ramadhan, through your generous donations we distributed 5000 Iftaari food parcels to the most needy families.

Each Food Parcel contains the Basic essentials, such as: rice, flour, sugar, salt, pasta, cooking oil, tea etc. One Iftaari parcel provides for one family and ensures they have a proper meal once a day.

In addition, Iftaari meals were provided for all the brothers who were observing itikaaf in the Masjid during the last ten days of Ramadhan. We also intend to provide Iftaari parcels this year therefore we require your generous support. £10 will feed one poor family for 10 days or £30.00 for the whole month).

Earlier this year the North of Albania was hit by a major flood which left countless of Albanians homeless.

Rahma (Mercy) was able to respond instantly and sent a delegation to this region with Humanitarian aid. They distributed thousands of blankets, food parcels, and large bags of flour to all those affected by this flood. These vital components of aid helped those affected to get through this tragedy. Rahma (Mercy) is constantly monitoring the situation and is continuing to help the residents of the affected regions. Members of this delegation included: Naeem Karmada, Adil Valli, Moulana Khalil, Ayub Karmada, and Edris Tutla.

The new building will serve as Rahma’s main base within Albania as well as other purposes. The centre will:

• Provide flexible and accessible wide-ranging services to ALL.• Educate everyone on the fundamentals of Islam – this is very important.• Transfer teaching from homes around the region into a purpose built environment that can be accessed aswhenever it is needed.• Help our volunteers to have a base from which to work from and support the most needy of the people.• House a comprehensive Islamic library, galleries and exhibitions to fulfil the learning needs• Support for community social enterprise

The centre will really accelerate the development of the local people and provide a firm footing for them to build their lives upon. It will also enable the community to becoming self-sustaining over the long term.

Rahma and the Albanian people need your help. Please support this project – look out for more details during our events and pledge days throughout Ramadhan 2010.

Rahma has begun to undertake its largest and most ambitious project to date. A project that is so essential to the locals that it cannot be understated. A venture that will provide huge and much needed benefits to the people of Albania and represents the massive progress we have made as a charity.

The hope is to build a three storey, multi-purpose centre that will meet the religious, domestic and social needs of the growing Muslim community of that area. The centre will act as a lifeline for the population and will help Rahma to realise some valuable efficiencies and savings. This centre will provide information and accessible channels for the new Muslims to harness for themselves a productive network which will allow them gain crucial support for their deen and flourish as individuals.

Abbey & Shenton Primary Schools

Two Primary Schools from Leicester have generously donated and supported the work being done by Rahma.

Abbey Primary School has donated £224. This money has been used towards purchasing essential food parcels and a portion will go towards supporting a school in Griqan.

Shenton Primary School has also kindly given £125 and this money is currently in the process of being allocated to some very worthy causes. Rahma would like to recognise and give special thanks to all those at the schools – parents, children and staff. Their money will make a huge and important contribution.

When Rahma first began in the late nineties and took its first steps to helping the people of Albania, we never envisaged that we would come so far or achieve so much. This of course has been due solely to the Grace of the most Compassionate One.

The support we have received has been overwhelming to say the least, and the team have begun to think about developing a strong vision and plans to build on the good work and take things further. We would like to take this opportunity to give our most warmest and heartfelt thanks to the generous and kind people of Leicester. The Leicester community have always stood tall in their support and have never failed to donate, regardless of their situation or what the challenge was that lay ahead.

The vision for Rahma is to now take this beyond Leicester and to raise our profile as a charitable organisation. We realised some success last year from our pledge days in Bristol and Cardiff and from appearing on television channels such as IQRA TV.

From an organisational perspective we will be looking to strengthen the team. Our volunteers have by far been our most valuable asset. They are always there to help out and dive into the hard, physical work that is sometimes required to make things work. We are also looking to develop our structure at an executive level and establish a more organised and efficient way of working.

Zakaatul – Fitr £3 per person

It is compulsory to pay Zakaatul Fitr for each member of the family as it is a condition of the fasting of Ramadhan (for those with sufficient means). We urge you to send your Zakaatul Fitr (£3 per person) to use for distribution to the poor and needy on the joyous festival of ‘Eid.

Fidya £3 per Fast

Fidya is to feed a poor person for each day that a person cannot fast due to old age or a long term illness. This will be £3 (i.e. £3 multiplied by the number of missed fasts)

Zakaatul Maal (Zakaat)

Most people choose to pay their Zakaat during Ramadhan. The timely distribution of these funds will ensure that the poor and needy can get relief from their poverty and daily hardship.

Kaarah

If a person breaks a fast in Ramadhan without a valid reason, then that person is liable to fast for 2 months continuously without a break in between. If the person cannot fast due to a valid reason, then s/he must feed 60 poor or needy people 2 meals or give them the value of the same (i.e. £3 × 2 meals = £6, £6 × 60 people = £360).

Masjid Construction & Renovation

A compulsory requirement for the imparting of knowledge and practicing Islam. Each Masjid costs approximately £50,000. Lillah donations only*

Madrassahs

The importance and demand for Madressah has already been stated. Running cost for each Madressah is approximately £2,500 per year. Please help us fulfil the children’s increasing desire to learn and revive Islam.

Fresh Water Wells

Help provide clean water and bring relief for many poor and deprived families. Cost of each well is £1,300; however you can donate any amount you like towards this project. Lillah donations only*

Orphan Sponsorship

This provides a vital source of income for extremely poor and needy orphans. Every orphan receives £17 per month and, in most cases, this is the family’s only income.

Iaari Food Parcels

Food parcels contain essential items such as: salt, sugar, flour, pasta, cooking oil, tea. £10 will provide 10 days of food for a poor family (or £30 for the whole month).
