Dura Platform is an award-winning precision engineered product made from Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) which complies with Network Rail specifications and offers significant improvements over traditional alternatives - including a dramatic reduction in possession time, plant required on track and sizeable overall project cost savings. Dura Platform is an excellent choice for both new build and refurbishment projects and is fast becoming a viable rival for traditional materials such as concrete, steel and tarmac. Dura Platform can span up to an industry-leading 3.2m clear span and is capable of being man-handled, eliminating the need for costly RRVs or heavy lifting equipment. Why Choose Composite FRP Instead of Concrete?

Concrete is an extremely strong material, and performs extremely well in compression. However related to this principal quality is concrete’s main drawback - namely its weight. Even small slabs can be difficult, if not impossible, to lift by hand, meaning jobs require a lot of man power (if not heavy machinery) - all of which can prove costly.

What’s more, difficulty moving slabs in and out of position will also make maintenance and routine inspections unnecessarily problematic. Further still, if a load limit is exceeded for some reason, concrete may crack - something that will often lead to a whole site being closed to vehicles because of an inability to guarantee their safety.

There are a range of options which can be specified for both Dura Platform Type 40 and Type 100, such as different surface finishes, fully integrated tactile recesses, illumination of the coper and integrated heating to remove frost & ice build up.

Dura Composites offer a lightweight, high strength, non corrosive, non conductive FRP substructure ideal for extensions, new or refurbishment platforms.

Dura offer the sub structure as pre- fabricated units ready to be installed onto ground anchors. Due to their lightweight nature no heavy lifting equipment is needed so timely possessions and costs to the end client can be saved with quick installations causing less disruption to the end users.

Where the existing platform is structurally sound an overlay sub structure system can be offered.

Dura Platform can be specified with a range of surface finishes to suit any environment. Our standard Aluminium Oxide Grit has an attractive dark grey finish and is extremely hard wearing. Our Fleck surface finish resembles marble and is particularly well-suited to station concourses.

Our Traditional Tarmac or Resin Filled Tarmac finishes provide an alternative aesthetic and blend well with existing platform finishes elsewhere in the station. All Dura Platform surface finishes are easy to clean and achieve Network Rail anti-slip specifications in both wet & dry conditions.

Snow and ice can cause serious problems for the railways. Drifting snow from platforms and embankments can coat the electrified rail, preventing trains from drawing power and blocking lines and snow and ice on platforms can delay passengers and cause painful trips and falls.

Dura Platform can be specified with an integral heating system to keep platforms free of snow and ice in extreme weather conditions.

Traditional methods of snow and ice removal by station operators such as manual sweeping and salting or chemical de-icing are labour-intensive, have limited effectiveness and cause accelerated corrosion and deterioration of the platform and support structures.

Dura Composites’ innovative Platform Heating System removes the need for cost-intensive snow and ice clearing, whilst at the same time increasing platform safety for station users.

Dura Platform can be fitted with energy efficient LEDs to the front edge of the coper unit, adjacent to the white nosing, to help improve visibility of the platform edge and passenger safety.

The LEDs are available in both single or double lighting strips in white, blue or other colours and are fully recessed so no trip hazard is presented.

Station dagger boards are traditionally made from timber which requires extensive maintenance due to weathering. This can cause considerable disruption to passengers and station operators as rotten or warped boards normally need replacing in situ. Dura Composites’ dagger boards are made from durable FRP and mimic the appearance of traditional boards but are simple to install and require virtually no maintenance over their 50 year design life.

Station platforms should be adequately illuminated to enhance staff and passenger safety. Dura Composites FRP lighting columns provide a cost effective, lightweight and easily manoeuvrable alternative to traditional steel.

Dura Ballast Retention has been successfully implemented on a host of projects nationwide and offers significant advantages over traditional materials, including increased strength to weight ratio, high resistance to impact and resistance to fire and corrosion. As part of the consultation process, Dura Composites provides all the technical information necessary to obtain Form 3 approval. Bespoke support is provided for each installation to allow for the inclusion of enhanced speed and safety features such as the supply of GRP handrailing, bespoke lockable HCE inspection hatches, web stiffeners to suit particular dimensions and fabricated access staircases. Landslips or landslides involve the downslope movement of soil, rock (or a combination of the two), under the force of gravity. They happen when the water in the ground forces the grains of the soil apart so that the grains no longer lock together and the slope does not have enough strength to stand up so begins to slip downhill. This C-channel profile houses electric heating elements, clipped to the rails to prevent ice forming and keep the switch blades moving in extreme weather.

Fabrication Methods

Fabrication methods used with conventional materials can also be used with Dura Profile. The most common form of connections are made by mechanical fasteners.Bonded joints are also an option and selection of the appropriate method will depend on the:

• Distribution of loads within the assembled structure.• Necessity to disassemble the structure components at a later stage.• The environmental conditions during fabrication• The environment in which the assembled structure will be used.

Bolted connectionsBolted connections are the most common method of jointing Dura Profile. Stainless steel (or galvanised) nuts and bolts are used, with washers larger than usual to reduce local compressive stresses. It is good practice for the bolt to be a tight fit in the hole as this substantially reduces local stresses. It is also important that the bolt shank length (un-threaded) is sufficient to avoid threaded sections within the thickness of the joint materials.

Typical bolt separation distances are: Bolt dia x 3 from end of profile/x 2.5

from edge of profile/x 5 bolt centre to centre In certain circumstances, FRP nuts,

bolts and washers can be specified to suit aggressive environments or for electrical isolation. Due to the transverse mechanical

properties of Pultruded profiles, the following connections should be avoided.

Rivets Stainless steel and aluminium riveting is a very effective method of joining Dura Profiles. Pop-rivets are commonly used in conjunction with back washers to help distribute and minimize local stresses. The assembly should be designed so that the rivets are not in tension.

Captive InsertsCaptive Inserts are a fast, blind fixing system suitable for use with all materials. They are of particular use when there is no reverse access and can be installed at any stage of fabrication.

Screw Connections Self-tapping screws can be used successfully in many applications involving mechanical connections when high-strength fasteners are not required. Self-tapping screws may also be used in combination with adhesives.

Bonded Joints & PreparationStructural adhesives distribute stress more evenly and are used successfully to join Dura Profile and for sealing joints and exposed surfaces. Exceptional bonds can be obtained as long as the joint is designed to avoid excessive peeling stresses, the surfaces are properly prepared and the correct adhesive is used. Epoxies and toughened acrylics are suitable for use with Dura Profiles.

Preparation To achieve an optimum bond, the surfaces must be degreased with a suitable solvent. The bonding areas must be abraded until the surface gloss is removed then cleaned of dust and degreased again. The adhesive should be mixed and applied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The bond area should be clamped or mechanically fastened to maintain bond pressure and to ensure that there is no movement until the adhesive has fully cured.

Assembly Methods Almost all assembly methods used for wood, aluminium, steel or other materials can be adopted to assemble Dura Profiles. The following techniques should be followed:

Router bits and saw blades should be diamond-coated. Carbide tipped drill bits. Speeds

should take whole size and thickness into consideration. Counter support is necessary when

drilling hollow profiles. A medium course grinding wheel is

preferable to the finer grades. ‘Lag’ screws/bolts are not

recommended for fastening Dura Profile. Punches work better with a slight

sheer edge. Solvents, such as methylene chloride

or acetone should be used to prepare surface for bonding.

It is good practice to seal all exposed edges with a suitable resin sealant.



As many existing concrete and steel structures reach the end of their design life, careful consideration must be given to how to replace them and what with. TreadsWhere previous composite treads on the market have been limited in span capabilities, Dura Composites has the ability to span up to 2.1m clear open span, achieving the required 5kN/m2 at L/300 deflection and meaning that additional supports can be avoided in most scenarios. The NEW Dura Slab Structural Stair Tread design can be specified with built-in risers, speeding up the install process whilst increasing safety, particularly in scenarios where bridge treads are located near overhead lines or are replacing open risers. Also included is a very slight fall to assist in the prevention of water pooling which can lead to problems with ice in the winter months. No heavy lifting equipment is needed as all panels can be easily manhandled even in full stock lengths.

They feature a built-in riser for rapid installation and an in-built fall to assist with drainage and reduce pooling on stair surfaces. The Riser detail can be removed if necessary.

To ensure safety and ease of access for people with limited vision, Dura Slab Structural Stair Treads have DDA and Equality Act compliant contrasting coloured nosings, and provide a slip resistant surface, particularly when wet.

The Structural Stair Treads span up to 2.1 metres are corrosion and weather resistant, non-conductive and require minimal maintenance, making them ideally suited to electrified rail environments and for use on passenger footbridges. Lockable Dura Grating Catch Pit Covers Ensure Livestock Safety for Yorkshire Farming Community & Trackside Engineers

Dura Grating Lockable Catch Pit Covers from Dura Composites are now in use in Yorkshire to help ensure the safety of farmworkers, railway trackside engineers, sheep and other animals. According to data from the UK Health and Safety Executive, incidents on farms account for around 19% of the reported fatal injuries each year. The four most common types of accident on farms involve vehicles and machinery, falls from heights, lifting and handling and hazardous substances.

The farming workplace can also provide a number of confined spaces such as fuel storage tanks, grain silos and irrigation or drainage trenches that pose a considerable safety risk for workers and livestock. When it comes to assessing risks and threats from falls into these trenches for example, there are several elements that must be taken into account to ensure the most suitable material is chosen to help prevent accidents.

The first consideration is choosing a walking surface that is appropriate for both humans and livestock. Guidance from the HSE promotes that any flooring products which animals may come into contact with should be kept in a good state of repair and should not have any sharp edges or projections. Dura

Grating Lockable Catch Pit Covers are constructed from polyester resins and pure glassfibre, as an ideal and cost effective alternative to traditional materials such as wood, galvanised steel or stainless steel. Dura Grating has one of the highest degrees of slip resistance ever measured for a walking surface and offers excellent traction in wet and icy conditions. As part of the manufacturing process, Angular Quartz is integrally bonded to the grating, which produces an extremely long-lasting hard-wearing surface that is resistant to chemicals and corrosion resistant.

When used as Catch Pit Covers, the advantages of Dura Grating are clear to see. The resulting Pit Covers are lightweight, high strength, anti-slip and are easily removed for maintenance access. The Catch Pit Covers can be locked for additional security and can easily be lifted by one worker or two man teams. In the application shown above, the covers are used to protect railway drainage pits located in an area which backs onto agricultural land. Lockable covers were supplied by Dura Composites to prevent escaping sheep or other animals from falling into the pits and becoming stuck and to protect workers walking the route at night time or during periods of poor visibility.

Following the successful installation the customer stated that they were confident that the Dura Grating Lockable Catch Pit Covers would help prevent loss and injury to livestock as well as enabling them to easily maintain the trenches in the future.

The resulting Pit Covers are lightweight, high strength, anti-slip and are easily removed for maintenance access. The Pit Covers can be locked for additional security and can easily be lifted by one worker or two man teams.

When installing a composite walkway, it is often logical to also opt for a complementary low maintenance safety handrailing system so that the substructure, walkway, treads and railings all benefit from long design lives. Fabrication HandrailingThe Dura Composites Fabrication Handrailing system is constructed from fibreglass pultruded profiles. Non-conductive, high strength, low weight with low maintenance are a few key features.

The standard fibreglass hand railing colours are grey and safety yellow but bespoke colours can be produced on a longer lead time, dependant on quantity. The top handrail can be ergonomically designed and supplied with end caps to suit. A tubular mid rail and kick plate is available for safety.

Easily assembled on-site with simple hand tools Dura Composites also offers a pre-fabrication service for supplying sections of 1m or 1.5m lengths.

The FRP handrail vertical posts are 50mm x 50mm square fibreglass pultruded profiles generally secured by either base mounted foot fixings or side mounted foot fixings.
