Where did we get this ingenious idea?
Any guesses?Write it on your scratch

Why are there time zones???• Caused by the R&R boom• Back then, towns kept their own time• Sun directly over town = noon
– How is this a problem state to state?
• 1883, all railway clocks set to a new standard to make travel more consistent & easier
• The country caught on!
Industrial Growth1865-1914
• Westward expansion is taking place• While many moved west, a lot
stayed to build up the economy
Railroads Spur Industry• At first, railroads (R&R) were
locally run• Domestic lines couldn’t join
because of differences in gauges
• Gauges: width of a railroad track
Improvements to railroads
• 1886: railroads in the south adopt northern gauges – (13,000 miles of track
change)• Railroads now create a
network• network: system of
connected lines– Shipping: freight cars
become universal • shipper pays only 1 fare for
whole trip
Westinghouse Air Brake
• 1869, allows locomotive engineer to stop all railroad cars at once. – Increases safety– Allows longer trains– Allows faster trains
Pullman Sleeping Car• Cars with convertible benches for sleeping & lavatories
• Dining cars• Waiters and conductors to help passengers
