I hope that you have monitored our progress with the new vocational center in the past several issues of our newsletter. We are pleased to announce that all of the funds are now in place for this project and we hope to hold a

groundbreaking ceremony within the next two months. We are very grateful to the following organizations and individuals for making this project possible:

Economic Development AdministrationUSDA – Rural DevelopmentAppalachian Regional CommissionThe Ritch Designated Fund of the Community Foundation of Northeast AlabamaAlabama Dept. of Economic & Community AffairsEstate of George & Louise RitchJerry & Remelle DavisArc of North TalladegaDr. & Mrs. Vance MooreDaniel Foundation of AlabamaCommunity Foundation of Northeast AlabamaDraughon FoundationWest Birmingham Christian School FoundationWachovia FoundationCreek Bed FoundationPatricia DukeJuliette Bryant

The new vocational building is needed to expand the programs for our residents and to better meet the needs of businesses who would like to partner with Rain-bow Omega. Over the past several months, we have talked with a number of businesses who want to provide our residents with work. However, we have not had the space to accommodate additional contracts. The new center will include a larger production area, cafeteria, nurse’s station, exercise room, computer lab, training rooms, and administrative offices. This facility will be a tremendous as-set and allow us to streamline many of our programs. We hope you will visit our website frequently to monitor the progress of construction.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all of the staff of Rainbow Omega, I would like to thank you for your continued support! Please know that you have an open invitation to visit our campus whenever you have the opportunity. Your visits and phone calls are always an encouragement to me.

In MemoryEstablish a Lasting Legacy and Take the Tax-Deduction TodayOver the years, Rainbow Omega has received homes as a bequest in a will. Unfortunately, some of these thoughtful gifts did not take advan-tage of the IRS approved Retained Life Estate Agreement.

Under this Agreement, Rainbow Omega (a qualified 501 (c)(3) public charity) receives the remainder interest in a personal residence or farm irrevocably transferred by deed. A “personal residence” is defined as the place you live for more than 14 days per year, or 10% of the days dur-ing which the property is rented – such as a lake or beach home. Under the Agreement, you retain the right to use the property and keep any income generated by the property. You also continue the obligation to pay the property tax, maintain the insurance, and keep the home in good repair.

Upon your death, the home or farm immediately becomes the sole property of Rainbow Omega. Thus, the property does not go through probate, it is not vacant while your estate moves through the six month (minimum required) probation period. In addition, most insurance companies will not provide coverage for a vacant house, which may leave the property vulnerable to vandalism, costly repairs, and further devaluation. Likewise, utilities, security monitoring and lawn care continue until the home ownership is transferred with court approval.

Retained Life Estate agreements are ideal planning vehicles if your home will not pass to heirs. Moreover, you benefit from the immediate, and often substantial, charitable income tax deduction based on the ap-praised fair market value when you complete the Life Estate Agreement. In most cases, the deduction is greater than an individual’s annual income tax. In this event, the deduction can be carried forward for five additional years.

Talk with your professional advisor and ask them if a Retained Life Estate would benefit you; and talk with us to learn how your gift can help us continue our mission of serving adults with developmental disabilities.

In the past few months, Rainbow Omega has lost two very special residents due to unexpected illnesses. Frank “Frankie” Patton, son of Drs. Francis and Jane Patton, was a native of Birmingham and lived at Rainbow Omega for 11 years. He had a tremendous sense of humor and enjoyed working,

listening to music, watching television, and riding his exercise bicycle. Rob Travis was a native of Denver and had also lived in Atlanta prior to moving to Rainbow Omega in 2001. He is the son of Dottie Travis and the late Robert Travis. Rob loved working in the vocational center, worshipping at Greenbrier Church of Christ, and spending time with his family. He was an instant friend to everyone he met. Although we mourn the loss of our friends, we celebrate the full lives both of these men lived and we remain thankful to you – our donors – who have helped us provide a quality of life to people like Frankie and Rob for the past 15 years.

Event UpdatesBirmingham Dinner

More than 800 people were in attendance at the Sheraton Hotel on May 11th to hear Gov. Sarah Palin speak at the 18th Annual Birmingham Fundraising Dinner for Rainbow Omega. Gov. Palin’s youngest son has Down syndrome, as do many of the residents at Rainbow Omega.

Former Alaska Gover-nor Sarah Palin gave a special presentation, “Dreams for My Child’s Future: My Views as

an Advocate for Those with Developmental Disabilities.” Palin spoke about her doubts and fears when she learned, 12 weeks into her pregnancy, that her baby likely would be born with Down syndrome. Although Palin said her faith has always been strong, she thought, “Perhaps God has over-estimated us. I was given a challenge I didn’t know I was equipped to handle,” said Palin. “I didn’t have the confidence that my heart was prepared.” But when Trig was born, “he just melted into my arms,” Palin said. “He seemed to say, ‘I’m here, Mom. God gave us to each other. Are you going to love me?’ And I received the most manifest answer to prayer: Yes, my heart was prepared! That was truly the most joyful

moment of my life.”

Palin was already an advocate for special needs families before she became one of them. “The truest measure of any society is how well we

treat the most vulner-able among us,” said Palin. “Every person has something to contrib-ute, if we give him a chance.”

“Every parent of a special needs child worries about the question, ‘What will happen to my child when I can no longer care for him?’ Rainbow Omega is a God-send for special needs families,” said Palin. “We need more organizations like Rainbow Omega, that’s run so well, that doesn’t rely on the government. Others could emulate Rainbow Omega and our country would be a better place.” Palin noted there were people attending from Idaho and Colorado who are looking at Rainbow Omega. “Rainbow Omega is putting Alabama on the map, being a role model for others,” she said.

We are extremely grateful to radio celebrities Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey of the “Rick and Bubba Show” who emceed the event and gave Rainbow Omega an overwhelm-ingly positive endorsement on their morning show.

We are also very thankful to the following businesses and individuals who sponsored the event: Platinum Sponsor – North Alabama Fabricating Company (NAFCO); Gold Spon-sors – Posey Supply and American Printing Company; Silver Sponsors – Alabama Power, Coosa Valley Electric Coopera-tive, Honda Manufacturing, Ann Dillard, Stentson & Dianne Carpenter, Jerry & Remelle Davis; Vance & Laura Moore. Without their support, this event would not have been possible.

Rainbow Omega donor Remelle Davis and Gov. Sarah Palin pose for photographs at the VIP reception held prior to the dinner.

Emcees Rick Burgess and Bill “Bubba” Bussey entertain the audience and express their apprecia-tion for the programs offered by Rainbow Omega.

The Aktion Club is a program of Kiwanis International that provides adults with disabilities an opportunity to serve their community. Earlier this year, more than 50 Rainbow Omega residents chartered an Aktion Club for our campus with the help of the Kiwanis Clubs of Lincoln and Pell City. The group elected officers who oversee their monthly meetings and created a list of service projects they intend to complete. To date, our Aktion Club has collected items for care packages for U. S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan and made greeting cards and candy bags for residents of a local nursing home.
