What’s Happening At Rainbow Street? Canberra Stage 3 students spent three days in Canberra earlier this week learning about democracy and government, and visiting many of our national places of significance such as the National Gallery Of Australia, Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial. They also visited The Australian Institute Of Sport and attractions such as Questacon.

A huge thank you to the teachers, Mrs Nalovski, Mr Richmond, Mr Roche and Miss Smith, who accompanied the students on the excursion. Teachers don’t get paid overtime so we really appreciate the extra hours they put in to provide this opportunity for students. Thank you to Kevin and Serge who drove the students and teachers and provided commentary. They both reported the students and staff were fabulous! Thank you also to parents for being on time to pick up the students upon their return to Sydney and also not parking in the bus stop which ensured a safe drop off. These two things greatly assisted us. Also this week, Miss Sayers was given a lesson about how to use Proloquo2Go communication software when she visited SZ.

Early Arrivals A reminder that playground supervision commences at 8:30am. It is not safe for students to be on

Meet others informally to have a chat, ask questions about the EAL/D program, network with other parents and to understand our community a little more. This is a chance particularly for parents who are new to Australia to discuss school routines and to discuss students’ needs, both social and academic. If you require a meeting to discuss your child’s individual needs or any issues, please feel free to make an appointment either before or after school hours. I look forward to meeting you all in the next couple of weeks. Mrs Nicola Hargrave EAL/D Teacher National Reconciliation Week National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is fast approaching. The theme this year is Grounded in Truth: Walk With Courage. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Throughout Week 5 students at Rainbow Street will be immersed in a range of learning opportunities relating specifically to the importance of reconciliation in Australia. Mr Roberts Collection Of Students If someone other than the registered carers is collecting your child from school, please ensure that you inform the school in writing. Kindergarten 2020 Enrolments Know someone living in our intake zone who is thinking about enrolling their child/children in Kindergarten at Rainbow Street Public School in 2020? An information session will be held this coming Tuesday, 28 May 2019, at 9:30am to provide information about our school. Existing families with a sibling enrolling in Kindergarten 2020 do not need to attend. Simply submit your enrolment application and supporting documents at the Office. Enrolment interviews will be held later in the year.

For a more positive fundraising experience: Over the years, our P&C has built up some practical experience in planning, negotiating and executing all sorts of vibrant experiences for fundraising, as a service to our children and ourselves and a bit of both. We’ve done this in and out of the school grounds. We have experienced planners amongst our parent group and executive ranging from high school parents like Sally (her youngest’s last year at Rainbow Street) who remember when our school was pink, through to Jo-anne who did well to help shoulder the responsibility of planning the recent Mother’s Day stall. I certainly have fond memories of Election Day cake stalls, orientation BBQs and … bigger than Ben Hur – the Car Boot Sales: unfortunately postponed due to our school’s redevelopment. We are now exploring how to best use our new space. Please consider, especially when we want parents —and teachers— involved, the amount of prep work that’s needed. I know some blanch at the “rules and regulations” aspect of this — it seems a nuisance. If we hire goods and services, venues, coordinate teachers, supervise children we have to consider Working with Children Checks, Third Party Insurance, rosters … which can take away some spontaneity. However, this stuff doesn’t have to be a roadblock, or a fusty excuse to say “No”. As I’ve mentioned, we’re lucky to be blessed with “corporate memory”. We’ve done a lot of this stuff before; learned from our mistakes; written and stored worksheets, whole lists of hints. Our P&C Association is insured. The key is planning. And lead-up time. For example, Carol Ann and Craig have already been scoping out

the school grounds and staff for events we plan to hold well into third and maybe fourth term. Each meeting, the reverse-side of our agenda has a school calendar. Speaking of agendas, the last meetings have been blessed with informative and interactive presentations with our general members having a say on what events to prioritise. TLDR: if you have a great idea – does it synch with events we already have planned? What’s the cost – have you budgeted and want the membership to vote on it? Sure! Remember, we also have to budget, find human resources. Parents like us whose time is limited, and are willing to help in their own way and style. Planning, cooperation, compromise, teamwork = “Yes”. Congratulations! Next Meeting Monday 3 June 2019, 6-8pm, Stage 3 building. Agenda out soon. Approaching mid-year already, Greg./ Gregory Dodwell [email protected] https://www.rainbowstpandc.org.au
