John and Naomi’s daughter, Chloe, had complex needs which required round-the-clock care. Sadly, she passed away at Rainbows after battling many conditions including an acute neurological disorder, cerebral palsy and underlying heart conditions.

MumNaomi,said:“Chloewasafighterandshewentonherownterms.Shehadmadeuphermindthatshe’dhadenough.

“Thefamilyisjustsothankfulthatshewasn’tinpain,thatshewassurroundedbycarerswhoknewherwellandthatIgottobebyhersidewhenthemomentcame.”

Chloe,whohadbeencomingtoRainbowssinceJuly2010,waswell-knownforherirresistiblesmileandwickedsenseofhumour.

DadJohnsaid:“Shemadeeverybodysmile.Everyoneshemetshetouchedinsomeway,shapeorform.”

OverthepasttwoyearsRainbowsactedasalifelinetotheSpencersandasaresultNaomiandJohndescribethestaffasanextendedfamily.

Naomisaid:“WewerereferredtoRainbowsfollowingaparticularlydifficulttimewhenChloebecameincrediblyunwellandspentsixmonthsinintensivecareatLeicesterRoyalInfirmary.

“Theirsupportmeantsomuchtous,itprovidedmyselfandJohnwithsomerespite,andgaveChloethechancetoenjoynewexperiencesandgainindependence,whilealsoallowingouryoungerdaughter,Hannah,(6)tospendtimewithotherchildrenwhohadsimilarfamilybackgrounds.”

Chloe’sgrandparents,JillandGeraldSpencer,said:“WewouldliketothankeveryonewhohasplayedtheirpartinlookingafterChloeandthefamily.

“Withoutthatsupportwewouldnothavebeenabletoenjoyallthegoodtimessowethankyouallfromthebottomofourhearts.”

A wonderful year for royalty and sport.Thisyearhasbeenayearof

celebrationwitheventsincludingtheQueen’sDiamondJubileeand

theOlympics.Ithasbeenwonderfultoseepeoplejoiningtogethertocelebrateandenjoytheseoccasions.

ThatiswhatwedoatRainbows–weenjoyeachdayasapreciousgiftandwecelebrateeachachievement.

Wehavehadawonderfulyear–wehadaRoyalvisitfromPrincessAlexandrawhonotonlyvisited,butalsotookthetimetospeaktochildren,youngpeopleandfamiliesaswellasstaffmembers,andshemadeeachonefeelspecial.

TheChelseaFlowerShow,forthefirsttime,hadabeautifulRainbowsGardenwhichhasnowcometothehospiceandweareveryproudtoannouncethatitwonaSilverMedal.

Inthisissueyouwillmeetsomeofthepeoplewhoworkhere,andlearnmoreaboutwhatgoesonatthehospice,theoutstandingcare,thelovelyfacilitiesandourfantasticchildrenandyoungpeople.

HerRoyalHighnessPrincessAlexandrawatchedthechildrenandyoungpeopleatRainbowsgettingcraftyforChildren’sHospiceWeekwhenshevisitedinMay.ThePrincessjoinedthechildrenandyoungpeopleastheyfinishedtheirpreparationsforthecharity’sSuperheroFridayandannualWalkofLife,partofthenationalChildren’sHospiceWeekactivity.Thechildrenweremakingsuperheromaskstobeusedonthedaysoffunandfundraising.

ThePrincesswasgivenaguidedtourbyourChiefExecutiveGeoffEllis.HerRoyalHighnessheardfromstaffabouttheprofessionalcareandsawthewonderfultherapyfacilities.

AttheendofhervisitPrincessAlexandrawaspresentedwithaposyofflowersbyEllieNemeth,agedsix,whoissisterofThomaswhoattendsRainbows.

WeweredelightedtowelcomeHRHPrincessAlexandratoRainbowsandtohavetheopportunitytoshowherthefacilities.ShewasabsolutelywonderfulandtookgreatcaretoensureshewaspersonallyintroducedtoeveryoneatRainbowsduringhertour.WehopehervisitwillinspirepeopletosupportRainbows.

Assheleft,PrincessAlexandraremarkedonhowmarvellousthefacilitiesatRainbowswereandwhatawonderfulatmospheretherewasatthehospice.

A Big Jubilee Garden PartyLeicesterbasedmarketingagency,Big,celebratedtheQueen’sDiamondJubileewithagardenpartyforRainbows.

ThescenewassetforthepartywithbrassbandmusicandUnionJackbuntinggalore.Therewerevariousgamesthroughouttheafternoonincluding“PinthecrownontheQueen”.Therewasalsoa“BakeacakefitforaQueen”competition,andallofthehomemadecakesweresoldtoraisemoremoney.

MikePhillipson,ManagingDirectoratBigcommented:“BighasbeensupportingRainbowsforoverthreeyearsnow,raisingmoneyfromeventssuchassponsoredruns,dragonboatracing,quizzes,auctionsandbingo.It’saveryworthycauseandthepartyhashelpedtoraisemore,muchneededmoneyforRainbows.”

OurHydrotherapyPoolopenedattheendof2010andit’snowoneofthefavouritetherapyareasatRainbows.

Thechildrenaregettingalotofenjoymentfrombeinginthewaterandtheyreallybenefitfromtheirsessions–thepooltherapyhelpstoeasestiffjoints,relieveachesandpainsandincreasemobility–allveryimportantforyoungpeoplewhouseawheelchair.

Evenchildrenwhowouldnotnormallybeabletogointoapoolhaveenjoyedaswim,thankstoourspecialiststaffandequipment.Childrenwithtracheotomies

andthosewhoarefullyventilated(usingaventilatorallthetimetobreathe)are,probablyforthefirsttimeintheirlives,usingapoolandlovingit!

Rainbowshasalsowelcomedphysiotherapiststothehospicetoworkinthehydrotherapypoolwithchildrentheyarecurrentlytreating.

Outsidegroupsincludingtwobabyswimgroupsandspecialschoolsalsocomealong.Wecanonlyrunthepoolwiththefundraisingsupportofpeoplelikeourreaders–thankyou!

TheBrearley’sFamilyWalkOnthelastdayofthefootballseasonDad,Lee,withhistwochildren,ConnorandCharlotte,walked15milesfromtheirhometoNottsCountyfootballgroundandraisedover£1,800.

ZipWireThisyearsawthefirsteverZipWireeventacrossPrideParkStadiuminDerbywhere80peopletookupthechallenge.Evenoneofourfamiliestookpart–thankstoeveryone,especiallytheFurlongs.

David Nieper Ltd Match FundsSupervisorSueCookeandMDChristopherNieperarepicturedhandingovertheproceedsofaseriesoffundraisingeventsallofwhichwerekindlymatchedbythecompany.Theyhaveraised£2,300todateandcontinuetofundraise!

RainbowsCircleofFriends“IhavebeenasupporterofRainbowssincetheverybeginningandhelped,whenable,toraisefundsinmanydifferentwaysbutRainbowshasneverhadaguaranteedincome.”

DavidFrench,amemberoftheCircleofFriendssays:“TheCircleofFriendswillhelpbyallowingthefinanceteamtobudgetinamorepredictablewayfortheeverydayneedsofthehospice.”

OurPatronsTurnOutForWilliamRoache’sGolfDayInspiteofthetorrentialrain,CoronationStreetstarandRainbows’Patron,WilliamRoacheMBE,wasjoinedbymanyofhiscelebrityfriendsforawonderfuldayofentertainment.

Organisedbyoneofourbiggestsupporters,Champions(UK)Plc,guestsweretreatedtoawonderfuldaywithcelebritiesandentertainment.WiththecoursefloodedintheheavyrainthathitLeicestershire,theentertainmentmovedindoors,wheresnookerlegendandRainbowsPatronWillieThornehostedafascinatingQandAsessionwithsomeoftheimpressivelistofcelebritieswhoturnedoutfortheevent.OtherPatrons,includingEngland’smostcappedfootballereverPeterShiltonOBEandMatthewHoggardMBEjoinedsomeofthecelebritieswhosharedstoriesfromtheirexperiencesattheverytopoftheirsports.

Street partyResidentsofWesternParkRoadinLeicestercouldn’twaitfortheirDiamondJubileestreetparty,soheldtheircelebrationsaweekearly.Nearly100peoplesatdowntolunchinthestreet,whichwasclosedofftotrafficfrommiddayto4pm.

AlexisHutson,oneoftheorganisers,said:“Itwasbrilliant.Wehadthebestweather.Wehadthekidsrunningupanddownthestreetplayingbecausetherewerenocars.Itwasjusthowwehopeditwouldbe.Wedecidedtogoaweekearlysowecouldsaywewerethefirstandbecausethiswaswhenwewouldgetthemostpeople”.

Therewasaraffle,football,cricketandabouncycastle.About£300wasraisedforLOROSandRainbowshospices.

MatthewHoggardisaRainbowsSuperheroMatthew Hoggard MBE is already a cricketing hero and now he has become a hero for Rainbows Hospice too.

AswellasofficiallystartingtheannualRainbowsWalkofLife‘SuperheroSunday’,theLeicestershireCountyCricketClubcaptainisalsobecomingaPatronofthecharity.

OnavisittothehospiceMatthewsaid:“MymanagementteamatChampionsdoesalotofworkwithRainbowsandtheytoldmeaboutthehospice.MywifeandIareluckythatoursonishealthy,butsomeparentssadlyhavetofacethefactthattheirchildwon’tlivethefulllifethey’dhopedforthem.Rainbowsisthereforthosechildren,theirparents,siblingsandotherfamilymembers.

100YearsofFashion1900-1999RainbowssupportersAnnieTaylorandFelicityAustinorganisedahistoricfashionshow.Itfeaturedoutfitsfrom1900to1999,togetherwithnews,musicandsongsfromeachdecade,plusafewiconicdancesandsurpriseitems!Itwasafantasticnightandthevenuewasabsolutelypacked.Anamazing£2,000wasraisedforRainbowsandLymphomaResearch.

06 CelebrityLuncheon

AngelahasbeenafamiliarfaceandvoiceinBritishbroadcastingfor45years.Shetalkedabouthercareer,whichhasembracedanimpressivevarietyofprogrammesonbothradioandtelevisionforbothcommercialandBBCstationsinBritain,andformajornetworksinAmericaandAustralia.Inthe2004Queen’sBirthdayHonoursshewasawardedanOBE.

ShecurrentlypresentsandappearsonCashintheAttic,RipOffBritainandTheOneShow.

Over300ofoursupporterslistenedtoAngleaspeak.Angelawassomoved

hearingaboutRainbowsthatsheagreedtobecomeapatronshortlyaftertheluncheon.

RainbowswasdelightedwhenpopularTVpersonality,AngelaRippon,OBE,agreedtobetheguestspeakerattheannualcelebrityluncheon.WewereevenmorethrilledwhensheagreedtobecomeaPatronofthehospice.

RainbowsAmbassadorsSueandPatJones,wentalongtotheCompanionDogShowheldinEyresMonsell,byJanetHiggins.Theydecidedtotakealongtheirrescuedog,Sally....whothenproceededtowin1stprizeinRescueDog,3rdinSportingDogandwasoverallBestinShow.Notbadforalastminuteentrant.WelldoneSally!

A Summer Serenade‘SingingintheRain’wasnotthecasefortheSummerSerenadeheldinthebeautifulgroundsofSpencerHouseinNuthall.NoelandMegJervisinvitedover250peopletogatherforaneveningofoperaandmusicaltheatre.Afantastic£7,000wasraisedforRainbowsandagreattimewashadbyall.

AtRainbowswearealwaysveryhumbledbyhowpeoplechallengethemselvestosupportusbyholdingtheirownfundraisingevents.Forsomeitcouldbeasponsoredsilence,Knitathonororganisingacoffeemorning.ForothersitcouldbeanythingfromclimbingKilimanjaro,skydivingortakingpartinoneofoursponsoredwalks.TherearemanyamazingpeoplewhosupportRainbows.JustoneofthemisNicholeDryburghwhohaslinkswiththehospiceasherDadwasavolunteerhereformanyyears.Sadly,theyhavehadtodealwithalotoffamilyillnessandNicolawantedtoorganiseaneventtoraisefundswhilstalsounitingfamilyandfriends.ShearrangedaCharnwoodWalkforLifewhichstartedinQuornandtravelled15kmtoOldJohninBradgatePark.Shemanagedtoget50walkerstotakepartandraisedanimpressive£2,277.

Steve’s Amazing Golf ChallengeRainbowsAmbassadorandCharnwoodForestGolfCaptain,SteveAckling,recreatedachallengefirstundertakenbyHarryFlude,amemberatCFGCgolfclub,in1913.Hehadtocomplete150holesinunder14hours!Steveteedoffat5amaimingtoplayoveeightroundsofgolfinanaveragetimeofjustover90minutesper18-holeround.Hisfamilyandfriendsagreedtohelpbycaddyingandball-spotting.Wearedelightedtoannouncethathecompletedthe150thholeafter13hours50minutes,therebycompletingthechallengewithtenminutestospare.Heraisedanamazing£1,954.

A Splash at the Rotary SwimarathonThisyear’sGranthamRotarySwimarathonattracted1,400swimmerswhoraisedanamazing£37,187for50localcharitiesincludingRainbowswhoreceived£500.

Did it Again!

Our Super Walkers

The annual Rainbows Walk of Life was another fantastic event which took place as part of Children’s Hospice Week. Our 600 plus superheroes had a great walk.

Todateshehasraisedover£1,500andalsoraisedawarenessofwhyRainbowsissoimportant-somethingthefamilyknowfirsthand.Oliviaisaveryspecialgirlinmanyways.HerbrotherWilliamneedsalotofspecialistmedicalcareandspendstimeinhospital,butOlivianevercomplainsanddoesherbesttohelpoutwherepossible.

Sheistrulyacaringbigsisterwholovesherlittlebrotherverymuch.OliviahasstayedatRainbowswithherbrotherandtherestofthefamilyandknowswhatanamazingplaceitis.

MumAli,ofMickleover,said:“Itwasquiteabigthingforhertodobecausesheisstillonlylittleherself.ButshewasdeterminedshewantedtodosomethingtoraisemoneyforWilliamandhislittlefriendsatRainbows.Sheissuchanamazinglittlegirl.”

Oliviasaidshewasexcitedtobetakingpartinthewalkandthatshecouldn’twaitto“dressupasasuperhero”and“raisealotofmoneyforWilliamandhisfriends”.

Inthelastmonthsof2010,Harry’sconditiongotworse.Repeatedchestinfectionsandnumerousepilepticfitsmeanthewasinandoutofhospital.OnaSaturdaynightinearlyDecember,LucyandTimweresettlingdownforatakeawaymeal,“butHarrygotsobadsoquicklythatnight,thatweheadedstraightforRainbows.”

It’sadreadfultime,preparingtosaygoodbyetoyourdyingson,butthosefinaldaysatRainbowswereeverythingLucyandTimhadhoped.HarrydiedonFriday17thDecember2010.“Itwasso

sad,andyetupliftinganddecentatthesametime”,saysLucy.

Lucysaid:“EveryoneatRainbowswasfantasticduringHarry’slastdaysandwhileTimandIwereabletogetoutsideoccasionallyforsomefreshair,therewasnowherespecificallyforustogotobealonewithourthoughts.ThereisabeautifulgardenofremembranceatRainbows,butthatwasn’tsomewherewecouldfacespendingtime.Atranquilgarden,liketheoneatChelsea,wouldhavebeenperfectforuswhenHarrywasdying.”

FreemasonsfromLeicestershireandRutlandalongwiththeGrandCharitymadehugelygenerouscontributionstoensurethatthegardenwasfullyfundedtoberecreatedwithinthehospiceandwillbeofficiallyopeningitduringouropendayonthe15thSeptember.

WithadditionalsponsorshipfromArchCommunicationandplantinghelpgivenbyBBCRadioLeicester’sgardeningexpertandHonoraryAmbassador,AdyDayman,thegardenhasbeencreatedbydesigner,ChrisGutteridgewithaninteractiveelementprovidedbyDeMontfortUniversity’sRetailLab.

ThecelebrationstartedwiththewonderfulsteelbandfromStAndrew`sSchool,and includedcreamteaonthelawn,amusicgameandfashionparade.

Onesupportersaid:“Ithinkit’sanexcellentideaaswe’renotfinanciallyabletodonateverymuchatthemoment,butfeelveryhappythatwe’vehadtheopportunitytoarrangeawillandleaveadonationintheprocesswhichIprobablywouldneverhavethoughtofotherwise.”

An Amazing Result from Rebecca’s SchoolStudentsfromYear6attheCarltonleWillowsAcademyinNottinghamraisedastaggering£10,000duringtheirannual‘EffortsWeek’.ThemoneyraisedwassplitbetweenfiveverydeservingCharitiesandRainbowshadbeenchosenforaveryspecialreason.RebeccaVanWyk,ateacherattheschool,usesRainbowswithherdaughter,Maralise.ShefindsthecareandsupportshereceivesattheHospicealifelinetohelpherdealwithherdaughter’sverycomplexneeds.RebeccawasverytouchedthatthestudentshadchosentosupportRainbowsandwasabletobothattendandspeakatthechequepresentation.

Our Learning Disabilities NurseMaggieSmalequalifiedasaLearningDisabilitiesNurseinPortsmouthin1982andthenworkedfortwelveyearswithchildrenwithlearningdisabilities.ShehasbeenatRainbowssince2010.

Maggiesays:“Iloveworkinghere–everydayisdifferent,bringingitsownchallenges.IusealltheskillsIhadbeforeandIhavelearntnewonestomeetthosechallenges.Thechildrenandfamiliesarefantastic–thereareverygood,happytimesandtheinevitablesadtimes.

ThebestkindofdayiswhenIhavebeenabletotakeachildwhohasspentalotoftimeinhospitalintothehydrotherapypooloroutonatrip.Maybetheycanhaveafirsttimeexperienceofthemulti-sensoryroom,justgenerallyenjoylife.

IamstillalwaysanursebutsomuchmoreatRainbows”.

Duringhertimehere,shehasworkedwithhundredsofchildren,youngpeopleandtheirfamilies.Becauseofherexperienceandfriendliness,threeyearsagoshewasappointedtoworkasourFamilyLiaisonWorker.HerjobistosupportthosefamiliesthatkindlychoosetohelpRainbowsfundraise.

MeetSomeFundraisersNeilSwiftisourFundraisingAssistant,whohelpsoutwithalltheeventsandsupportspeoplewhentheywanttofundraiseforus.He’sevendonesomefundraisingofhisown.Hesays:“Ienjoyeveryminuteastwodaysareneverthesame.FormeRainbowsisaspecialplacetowork,especiallyasI’llbeadadsoon.

IworkwithBeccy.IfyouhaveevertakenpartinachallengeforRainbowsorsetupanonlinegivingpagewehavebeentheoneswhosendtheemailsofencouragement,orwehavebeenontheendofthephonetogiveyouasmuchsupportaspossible.”

Mylifeisalwaysonfullspeed.InmysparetimeIamanactivememberofLadies’Circle,aScoutLeaderandfortheremainderofmytimeIamrunraggedbymytwoadorablekiddywinkles!”

MeetOurFamilyLiaisonWorkerJulie Macauley, pictured on the left above, our Family Liaison Worker, came to Rainbows nine years ago to work as a member of the care team, so she’s a well-known face at the hospice.
