Welcome to Knebworth Recreation Ground…

This afternoon we welcome our neighbours and friends from AFC Hatfield to the Recreation Ground. I’d like to welcome their chairman Neil Clixby, their players, staff, officials and supporters along with today’s referee David J Murphy. We hope you all have an enjoyable afternoon with us and a safe journey home. As mentioned in our last edition, there have been some changes at the club over the summer with Ady Bird joining us as First Team Manager and Ross Murphy as his assistant. They have already made a big impact on the team and squad and will be hoping to build on our solid league start today. Away from the league action, this time of year always sees numerous cup draws come out and routes to the final and the silverware can be plotted. Some of those involving ourselves and HSCL clubs are included today. This week’s Non-League Paper column focuses on the early season managerial changes, something we had to deal with last season. We are also still looking for people to take on some small weekly or monthly tasks to share the burden of running your football club; an hour a week or a few hours each month. If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with Stuart. Please join us back at the pub after the game where food is generously laid on and live sports are shown on television – it’s just down the road and you’ll be warmly welcomed!

Enjoy the game!

John

Non-League Paper programme column by Steve Coney

THE NEW season has not even reached the grand old age of one month for most clubs yet and the circus that is

the managerial roundabout has well and truly kicked-off.

At the time of writing, we have already seen six departures in the Premier League and Football League, with

Huddersfield boss Mark Robins losing his job after just one game! He was quickly followed by Crystal Palace,

Leeds, Watford, Colchester and Carlisle all losing their managers, either through resignations or chairmen

swinging the axe.

The Non-League scene has also jumped aboard this rollercoaster with at least three managers out the door before

September had even begun.

And with the exit of Tony Pulis from Crystal Palace due to apparent disagreements with the chairman, we at

NLP HQ decided to look back at some of the strangest managerial departures from the world of Non-League.

Get back from the pub on a Saturday evening and turn the TV on and you’re likely to see one of two people –

Leroy Rosenior or Steve Claridge. Claridge has had one Non-League managerial stint, taking charge of

Weymouth in 2003 but it’s his on screen counterpart who sprung to our minds.

Rosenior was put in charge of Torquay in 2007, just after they were relegated to Non-League. It didn’t last long

though with the former Fulham striker in charge for a whole ten minutes before Torquay were bought by a local

consortium.

Rosenior was unveiled to the local press at a news conference only for then owner Mike Bateson to almost

immediately agree to sell his 51% controlling stake in the club to the consortium, who duly relieved Rosenior of

his duties.

Chichester City were in the Sussex County League when they made headlines by sacking Mark Poulton as

manager, during a game! Poulton was taking charge of a cup tie against Redhill when his mobile started ringing.

Poulton probably rejected taking the call straight away (answering would surely have been a fine – Ed).

Poulton told the local press: “During the second half I had a call from Gary Walker, one of the directors, who

said he was sorry to interrupt me and then told me I'd been sacked!” It seemed to be the wrong decision though

with Chichester throwing a 2-1 lead away to lose 4-2!

Tipton Town parted company with manager Nick Hawkins and his first team staff last weekend despite their FA

Cup victory over Sporting Khalsa, with the conversation allegedly taking place on the way home through

FaceTime!

The Tipton departure followed in the footsteps of Enfield, Witton, Coalville and Cheshunt in the first few weeks

of the 2014-15 season.

There will inevitably be more managerial casualties in the months to come and we can only hope the decisions

are remembered in years to come – not necessarily for the right reasons!

Introducing Todays Visitors…

AFC Hatfield

AFC Hatfield were formed in the summer of 2008 by Darryn Stewart to bring his Mid Herts

Rural Minors team “Sherrardswood & Birchwood” into senior football. Most of the team had

played together since they were 8 years old and the objective then, as it is now, is to give young

adult footballers the chance to play a decent level of senior football and hopefully see them

progress onwards to higher levels.

Having joined the HSCL in Division One, the first season was, understandably, a challenge and

saw the club finish second bottom, a position repeated the next year although with an

improvement both in scoring more goals and conceding less.

Season 2010/11, only the clubs third in Senior football, saw several experienced heads mixed

with the youngsters and a dramatic charge up the league table saw them finish in 10th position

and have some very creditable cup runs. Sadly the end of the season saw Darryn stand down as

manager and the departure of three players to a higher level.

New managers arrived in the shape of the two Garys, Doctor and Statham, and the club again

improved on its previous league best finish with a 5th place finish. However the end of the season

saw further managerial changes with Mark Zienkowicz taking over the reins.

The 2012/13 season saw the club granted Charter Standard Status, a huge achievement for such a

new side and continued progress was made, on and off the field. This was bettered in 2013/14

with club finishing in 7th place with 9 wins from their 24 league games.

Club History…

Knebworth Football Club was formed in 1901 as founder members of the North Herts League and were crowned champions on five occasions and won the county Junior Cup in 1912/13, before moving to the Herts County League in 1948. A period of success came in the 1970s with a host of championships and cup wins, often under the influence of ex-Tottenham Hotspur player Johnny Brooks. Knebworth Football Club moved up the football ladder in 1983 to the South Midlands League, as well as to a new ground at Old Knebworth Lane. After five years the club returned to the North Herts League due to financial difficulties, winning three cups and a league title in two seasons, before going back to the Herts County League. There is no evidence to suggest that the club ever had a youth section, and in 1977 Doug Dilley set up Knebworth Youth Football Club initially with just an U12 boys team. The club began to grow and quickly had teams at U9 and U10 for the following season. The club continued to grow and within 25 years there were boys and girls teams representing the club from Under 6 through to Under 17 and over 200 registered players. Knebworth Football Club folded in 1995 when their ground at Old Knebworth Lane was sold as a health club. Four years later, Martyn Bond took his Knebworth Youth Football Club U18 side into senior football and re-formed Knebworth Football Club. After four successful years in the Hertford & District League the club were elected to the Herts Senior County League, achieving the FA's 'Charter Standard' award that same year and being crowned Herts FA 'Adult Club of the Year' in 2005. Knebworth Youth Football Club first achieved the FA's 'Charter Standard' award in 2004 and went on to pick up the Herts FA 'Club of the Year' in this category in both 2006 and also 2008. Further hard work and continued development saw the club achieve the coveted FA 'Development Club' status. In summer 2013, Knebworth Youth Football Club was incorporated into Knebworth Football Club. Knebworth Old Boys Football Club formed in the late 1980s as a veterans team playing on Sunday mornings, and in May 2014 agreed to join the club to bring all Knebworth football under one banner.
