Exploitation of thorium from AndhraPradesh

(a) whether it is a fact that the IndiaMeteorological Department (IMD) islooking to transfer its massive troves ofdata into the clouds;

(b) whether it is also a fact that the ideais to have more centralized control with itsregional centres across the country and tobe able to make it easier for research armsto access weather related data; and

(c) whether IMD would require datastorage in the order of 5 petabytes thatworks out to about 500,000 GB and if so,the details thereof?

Help to farmers by IMD

19. DR. VIKAS MAHATME: Will theMinister of EARTH SCIENCES be pleasedto state:

(a) whether weather forecasting is thechief function of Indian MeteorologicalDepartment (IMD);

(b) if so, how this department is helpingthe poor farmers who are fully dependenton weather for their crops;

(c) whether it is easy today to spreadawareness amongst farmers by usinginformation technology;

(d) if so, what are the key performanceindicators for IMD on the issue of helpingpoor farmers and increasing the agricultureproduction; and

(e) the details regarding our stand andstatistics of the above mentioned functionduring the last five years?

Investment by IMD in supercomputerfacility

(a) whether it is a fact that the IndiaMeteorological Department (IMD) plansto invest a sum of ` 400 crore in asupercomputer facility;

(b) whether it is also a fact that thesupercomputer would process about tenpetaflops of data per second and would beused to make a dynamical monsoon forecast;and

(c) whether these forecasts factor inevolving global weather conditions toimprove the accuracy of monsoon forecastsand if so, the details thereof?

Non-functional instruments ofIMD

(a) whether it is a fact that at least aquarter of the India MeteorologicalDepartment's recently installed rain gaugesand Automatic Weather Stations (AWSs),meant to supply hourly weather data fromacross the country, are not working to theircapacity;

(b) whether it is also a fact that severalinstruments remain non-functional becauseof lack of qualified personnel to repairthem;

(c) whether many AWSs are located onhills and in other hard to reach regions andcould malfunction unless regularlymaintained; and
