INTRODUCTION

Work book and Hand bookWorkbook is an extension of the main text book in social studies. The units of the

text books will be explained in the workbooks in a simple and comprehensive way.

The work books will include the maps , pictures ,graphs, diagrams etc.. which are

not provided in the text books .In work books different outline maps may be given

to locate places or land forms. Pupils may be asked to fill up the columns regarding

any of historical events or geographical phenomena. Questions and exercises in the

text books may be answered by the work books.

“Hand book is a ready reference material for the teacher to

suppliment his class room teaching” (Joseph,1982) It contains the summaries of

chapters in the text book, conceptual development of topics, statement of

objectives to be realised, explanation of significant terms, facts, concepts,

princilpes etc. teaching experiences to be provided, precautions to be taken while

demostrations, activities appropriate to each topic, evaluation tools, assignments

foe pupils and suggested reading materials for the teacher and pupils.

Advantages of work book

It promotes self learning and self assement.

It give practise in what pupils have learnt in the class and there by reinforces

learning.

It promote scientific thinking.

It makes learning more structured. It provide a systematic practice of skills.

It helps in revision of topics included in the text books.

QUALITIES OF A GOOD WORKBOOK

The qualities of a good workbook are

It should be based on the main themes and curricular objectives of the

social

studies curriculum

The workbooks should be full of activities

There should be necessary number of maps ,graphs, pictures etc in a

workbook

Avoid text book language in a social studies workbook .

Workbook will help a child to do the exercise given in the textbook

Workbook should be prepared to act as a self-learning material

MERITS

1. It encourages learning by doing

3. It will help proper utilization of leisure

4. It will enhance the interest and imagination of the student

5. Work book will enrich the social studies learning through self-

learning of students

DEMERITS

1. Sometimes work book will result in wastage of time

2. In some schools teachers are concentrating on workbooks and it

will hinder other activities of the curriculum

3. Workbook seldom develops reasoning and creativity among

students

4. Workbooks provide readymade answers for textual problems
