Club meeting April 19th 2016—Will Hill

Speakers were Tommy and Richard from the SeaView Fishing Pier to talk about pier fishing

Some necessities for pier fishing are 2 coolers, one for food and one for fish, a bucket, a towel, a landing net or gaff. You need to know two knots, the uni knot and the clinch knot. There are lots of different baits to choose from. Sea urchins, live shrimp, sand fleas, blood worms, squid, and even frozen bait. Sabiki rigs can be used to catch grass shad for live baits.

You can catch flounder, sheepshead, sea mullet, spot, toad fish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and even king mackerel form the pier. You are not allowed to fish for sharks from the pier.

Use diamond jigs for catching bluefish. Use 40 pound fluorocarbon leader for casting gotcha plugs or diamond jigs.

Pier fishing is not free. A daily pass is $12 but $25 if you want to fish for kings. A season pass is $230 for a single person or $320 for a couple. A season pass for king fishing is $325 per person. No alco-hol is allowed on the pier.

Club business:

We need sponsorship contracts in by the next meeting. The spon-sor material is on the KMT web site.

We are asking for anyone interested in going on the king mackerel outing out of Hatteras village on November 12th. Currently we need two more members to fill a second boat. The cost per person split 6 ways is $320 and that covers the charter fee and a 20 per-cent tip.

BOD meeting notes from April 12th 2016—Will Hill

John K is our temporary treasurer until elections.

The Mahi outing is full, every boat got a full crew during the sign up.

Rusty may have a party after the Mahi outing for those that are staying closer to MHC.

The KMT is on schedule but we need a fish buyer.

Someone needs to contact Betts nets for donations, we need a 6’ and a 10’ cast net for the KMT prizes.

We discussed a new KMT long format tournament. It was proposed that we have a 3 to 4 month tournament with a sign up cutoff date. We would need buy in from local tackle shops with certified scales to report weighed fish for the tournament. At the end there would be a shootout tournament with just the top 10 boats. A proposal for this format needs to be written so we can determine the details and feasibility of the idea. The boat Sea Creature has been booked for our Nov. 12th club king mackerel outing in Hatteras Village. Another boat will be booked if we have enough interest from other club members

2016 RSWSFC Ocracoke Trip and Tournament The Raleigh team of Tommy Walls, John Bryant, Stan Yackowitz, Fred Jelinek, Jim Beetham and Roy Zweidinger arrived in Ocra-coke Saturday, April 23 to fish the Ocracoke Invitational Surf Fish-ing Tournament (OISFT) held Thursday and Friday. The tourna-ment is usually the first week of May, but was a week earlier this year. We stayed in a different house this year located on the sound at the end of Harbor Cove Drive. Roy took his kayak and fished some on Saturday evening in the sound by the house and got towed around by a cow nose ray. Monday was the perfect kayak day and Roy went to Teach's Hole and caught sea mullet, one blue and lots of gray trout in the 10 to almost 12" class (plenty of double headers) and kept one 14". The team fun fished the first few days in the surf catching mostly sea mullet, a few blues and blow toads. Jim unfortunately caught a nail in the sidewall of his tire! We did catch enough fish to have a team fish fry two nights. Tommy did the honors on the fish and Stan made his potato pancakes. A front came through on Wednesday night and seemed to turn off the fish during the tournament. After winning the tournament in 2013, we had suffered a few down years with low scores, but figured we had nowhere to go but up this year. Unfortunately, there was still a little room left in the other direction and we failed to catch a scoring fish the entire tournament (along with about 10 other teams). Half of the teams caught 8 or fewer scoring fish. Most were sea mullet with a few blues, flounder and red drum. Male and female biggest fish were slot drum. As an interesting note, a judge told me one team only threw gold Hopkins the entire last session and did score blue fish. Fred threw a gold cast master for a little while for us, but got no hits. After finishing second and third several times, the Merchantville Fishing Club out of New Jersey, finally won the big one, taking first place with a score of 111 points.

Distant second was the Bud Light Six Pack with 76 points, and third was Team Daiwa with 67 points.

The Outcasters from Nags Head were the top women’s team with 27 points, followed by the Queen Mackerels, 22, and the Fishing Pelicans were third with 22.

Al Bevan caught the largest fish, a 27-inch red drum, and Peggy Byrd snagged a 19-inch red drum for the largest fish by a woman.

Greg O’Connell got honors for catching the most fish, 13, and four women caught four fish to tie in their gender category.

Carry On Bag and Accessories—Bernie McCants

In the March 2016 issue of Saltwater Sportsman I was gifted, there was an article on what I call a dry bag to car-ry with you when fishing on a charter or someone’s boat. I’m a big believer in check lists (old guy) so I thought I would use some suggestions from SWS and add a few of my own. Carry-on Bag—Make sure you take into account the size and type of boat you are fishing. Scale down if on a

boat with limited storage. If it’s going to sit on the deck it should be waterproof. Raincoat and bibs—while the forecast may not call for rain, sea state and nature of the boat make necessitate

putting on rain gear. Lightweight, preferable breathable are a plus in warm weather Electronics—Smart phone (preferably with a waterproof case) or camera for taking pics. GoPro. I have a

handheld VHF I usually pack. GPS devices are usually a no-no for some inshore guides so ask before pack-ing or bringing one out.

Back-up hat—hats have a habit of flying off when running. I have a rule we will only go back once to retrieve

your hat. ;-) Belt with fishing tools—knife, pliers, de-hooker. Having it on a belt will save time from looking for it on the

boat. Sunscreen & bug repellant—always best to apply these and clean hands BEFORE going out but may need to

reapply. Fishing towel—boat may have some but always good to carry one or two in the bag. Medications—aspirin / naproxen / Ibuprophen Small dry bag for wallet, cell phone, car keys—loose car keys have a habit of hiding in the bag so keeping

these together is nice. Sunglasses (backup) and cleaners—carry a number of the one-use packets and spread them around when you

clean your glasses. First aid kit—bandages and tape. Outdoor stores like Overton’s carry nice small self contained kits Snacks—I like to carry what a fishing buddy calls ―bird seed‖ (trail mix granola bars). Nabs (crackers from

y’all from up north) and Oreos are good choices. Copy of current fishing regulations—I use an smart phone app (http://www.safmc.net/fish-id-and-regs/

regulations-species) but this needs to be updated with current regs before you head out. Can also print out/or store as a favorite on a smart phone the regs on the NC DMP website: http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/recreational-fishing-size-and-bag-limits.

Tape measure—was bottom fishing with a club member (who shall not be named) and no measuring device on

an otherwise well-equipped boat. Clean (t-)shirt—for the photo op at the end of the day. Vs. the bait/slime/blood-stained shirt you’ve been wear-

ing. ;-) If you have other items, please email me and I will add to the list. [email protected]

Fishermen Win Big in Tagging Program Drawing

MOREHEAD CITY – Twelve lucky fishermen each won $100 in a recent N.C. Division of Marine Fisher-ies’ Multi-Species Tagging Program drawing.

The Tagging Program randomly selected tag numbers from the 1,020 fish tags that were turned in by fisher-men in 2015. Three tag numbers were selected from each of the four species that are tagged by the program.

The winners who turned in tags for red drum were: Alex Bissantz of Camp Lejeune, Daniel DeJong of Jack-sonville and Raymond May of Troutman.

The winners who turned in tags for striped bass were: Capt. Rennie Clark of Carolina Beach, Dustin Chap-pell of Tyner and Ben Morris of Kitty Hawk.

The winners who turned in tags for southern flounder were: Adam Tyler of Smyrna, Lonnie Brown of Harkers Island and Bill Mays of Warsaw.

The winners who turned in tags for spotted seatrout were: Allen Darst of Durham, James Buie of Eastover and Archie Moore of Wilmington.

The Tagging Program began in October 2014 and is funded by a Coastal Recreational Fishing License grant. Staff and volunteers place yellow or red tags on 15,000 fish each year.

Fishermen who catch the tagged fish and return the tags with required information to the division receive a letter and personalized certificate with information about the fish, as well as a reward. Those who return a yellow tag marked with ―NCDMF‖ receive either $5, a tagging program hat or a fish towel. Those who re-turn a red tag marked with ―NCDMF‖ and ―$100 REWARD‖ receive a $100 monetary reward.

Fishermen must record the species, tag number, date, location captured, total length of the fish, fate of the fish (released or harvested) and the type of gear used to capture the fish. Yellow tags may be reported by phone, but red tags must be cut-off and returned to the division for the fisherman to receive the reward.

Information gathered from tag returns allows researchers to determine species migration patterns, mortality, population structure and habitat use.

For more information about the Multi-Species Tagging Program, see http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/mf/tagged-fish or contact Ami Flowers at 252-948-3913 or [email protected].

LATE BREAKING NEWS

A Net Ban Referendum bill was introduced by Rep. Billy Richardson. The bill would have the citizens of North Carolina vote this November on whether or not to ban nets from our inshore waters. Rep Richardson feels very strongly that this is a very important issue for his constituents. You can learn more about Rep. Richardson’s bill by going to this link: http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2015/Bills/House/PDF/H1122v0.pdf If the bill were to be passed there would be a Referendum on the ballot this November asking for the public’s interest in a net ban. The NC Constitution makes all Referendums non-binding so even if it was approved, it would not enact a net ban nor would the Legislature be required to pass one.
