In Washington, former GOP presidential hopeful and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said the heart of the issue was the protection of reli- gious freedom. “This president on that day of his inaugura- tion lifted up his right hand and he swore before all of America that he would uphold and defend and protect the Constitu- tion of the United States,” Bachmann said. Someone in the crowd shouted: “Liar!” Bachmann continued, “But he has had no prob- lem telling the religious organizations and the reli- gious-oriented people of this nation that they must be forced to violate their religious beliefs under his health care mandate.” In Indianapolis, about 300 activists gathered on the south lawn of the Statehouse carrying signs reading “Stop Obama’s HHS Mandate!” and “Stand up for Religious Freedom!” and cheered speakers from groups in- cluding Indiana Right to Life, Americans for Pros- perity and the Catholic Church. Monsignor Joe Schaedel, pastor at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Indianapolis, told the crowd that talk of exemp- tions from the administra- tion are hollow. “Jesus Christ and his 12 apostles couldn’t get an exemption,” Schaedel said. “Make no mistake: Religious freedom is the issue!” In New Jersey, many of those who rallied at the Statehouse in Trenton first went to Mass at St. Mary of Assumption Cathedral. “There is no ‘war on contraception’ in our country,” said Marie Tasy, executive director of New Jersey Right to Life. “Con- traception is already widely, cheaply available. What’s really under at- tack today is religious freedom.” But Jennifer Miller, a vice president at Planned Parenthood in Trenton, said the rallies were being held by extremist groups that have a long history of attacking women’s health. “Simply put, anti- women’s health groups want to take a huge step backward for women’s health,” Miller wrote in an email. “If they had their way, more women would be uninsured, medical discrimination against women would be legal again, and women would once again be forced to pay more for health care and get less for their health care dollars than men.” ——— Associated Press writ- ers Tom LoBianco in Indi- anapolis and Andrew Duffelmeyer in Trenton, N.J., contributed to this re- port. Rallies From Page 1 PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a 50-year-old Oregon woman is in trouble because of her relation- ship baggage — but it’s not the emotional kind. Kola J. McGrath was arrested Monday for trespass- ing after workers at her boyfriend’s downtown Port- land apartment complex discovered the man was sneaking her into the building by hiding her in a large rolling suitcase. She was banned from the building last year for breaking a fire extinguisher case during an argument. The Oregonian reports McGrath is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 96 pounds. Police were notified when a caller reported a man had kidnapped a woman, placed her in a pink suitcase and taken her to the apartment building. Officers then searched 52-year-old Curtis T. Lowe’s apartment and found McGrath hiding in a closet. Ore. Woman Arrested For Visiting Man Through A Suitcase NEWS AROUND THE CLOCK www.yankton.net

In Washington, formerGOP presidential hopefuland U.S. Rep. MicheleBachmann of Minnesotasaid the heart of the issuewas the protection of reli-gious freedom.

“This president onthat day of his inaugura-tion lifted up his righthand and he swore beforeall of America that hewould uphold and defendand protect the Constitu-tion of the United States,”Bachmann said. Someonein the crowd shouted:“Liar!”

Bachmann continued,“But he has had no prob-lem telling the religiousorganizations and the reli-gious-oriented people ofthis nation that they mustbe forced to violate theirreligious beliefs under hishealth care mandate.”

In Indianapolis, about300 activists gathered onthe south lawn of theStatehouse carrying signsreading “Stop Obama’sHHS Mandate!” and“Stand up for ReligiousFreedom!” and cheeredspeakers from groups in-cluding Indiana Right toLife, Americans for Pros-perity and the CatholicChurch.

Monsignor JoeSchaedel, pastor at St.Luke’s Catholic Church inIndianapolis, told thecrowd that talk of exemp-tions from the administra-tion are hollow.

“Jesus Christ and his12 apostles couldn’t getan exemption,” Schaedelsaid. “Make no mistake:Religious freedom is theissue!”

In New Jersey, many ofthose who rallied at theStatehouse in Trentonfirst went to Mass at St.Mary of AssumptionCathedral.

“There is no ‘war oncontraception’ in ourcountry,” said Marie Tasy, executive director of NewJersey Right to Life. “Con-traception is alreadywidely, cheaply available. What’s really under at-tack today is religiousfreedom.”

But Jennifer Miller, avice president at PlannedParenthood in Trenton, said the rallies were beingheld by extremist groupsthat have a long historyof attacking women’shealth.

“Simply put, anti-women’s health groupswant to take a huge stepbackward for women’shealth,” Miller wrote in anemail. “If they had theirway, more women wouldbe uninsured, medicaldiscrimination againstwomen would be legalagain, and women wouldonce again be forced topay more for health careand get less for theirhealth care dollars thanmen.”

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a 50-year-oldOregon woman is in trouble because of her relation-ship baggage — but it’s not the emotional kind.

Kola J. McGrath was arrested Monday for trespass-ing after workers at her boyfriend’s downtown Port-land apartment complex discovered the man wassneaking her into the building by hiding her in a largerolling suitcase. She was banned from the building lastyear for breaking a fire extinguisher case during anargument.

The Oregonian reports McGrath is 5 feet, 6 inchestall and weighs 96 pounds.

Police were notified when a caller reported a manhad kidnapped a woman, placed her in a pink suitcaseand taken her to the apartment building.

Officers then searched 52-year-old Curtis T. Lowe’sapartment and found McGrath hiding in a closet.
