In Washington, formerGOP presidential hopefuland U.S. Rep. MicheleBachmann of Minnesotasaid the heart of the issuewas the protection of reli-gious freedom.
“This president onthat day of his inaugura-tion lifted up his righthand and he swore beforeall of America that hewould uphold and defendand protect the Constitu-tion of the United States,”Bachmann said. Someonein the crowd shouted:“Liar!”
Bachmann continued,“But he has had no prob-lem telling the religiousorganizations and the reli-gious-oriented people ofthis nation that they mustbe forced to violate theirreligious beliefs under hishealth care mandate.”
In Indianapolis, about300 activists gathered onthe south lawn of theStatehouse carrying signsreading “Stop Obama’sHHS Mandate!” and“Stand up for ReligiousFreedom!” and cheeredspeakers from groups in-cluding Indiana Right toLife, Americans for Pros-perity and the CatholicChurch.
Monsignor JoeSchaedel, pastor at St.Luke’s Catholic Church inIndianapolis, told thecrowd that talk of exemp-tions from the administra-tion are hollow.
“Jesus Christ and his12 apostles couldn’t getan exemption,” Schaedelsaid. “Make no mistake:Religious freedom is theissue!”
In New Jersey, many ofthose who rallied at theStatehouse in Trentonfirst went to Mass at St.Mary of AssumptionCathedral.
“There is no ‘war oncontraception’ in ourcountry,” said Marie Tasy, executive director of NewJersey Right to Life. “Con-traception is alreadywidely, cheaply available. What’s really under at-tack today is religiousfreedom.”
But Jennifer Miller, avice president at PlannedParenthood in Trenton, said the rallies were beingheld by extremist groupsthat have a long historyof attacking women’shealth.
“Simply put, anti-women’s health groupswant to take a huge stepbackward for women’shealth,” Miller wrote in anemail. “If they had theirway, more women wouldbe uninsured, medicaldiscrimination againstwomen would be legalagain, and women wouldonce again be forced topay more for health careand get less for theirhealth care dollars thanmen.”

ers Tom LoBianco in Indi-anapolis and AndrewDuffelmeyer in Trenton,N.J., contributed to this re-port.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police say a 50-year-oldOregon woman is in trouble because of her relation-ship baggage — but it’s not the emotional kind.
Kola J. McGrath was arrested Monday for trespass-ing after workers at her boyfriend’s downtown Port-land apartment complex discovered the man wassneaking her into the building by hiding her in a largerolling suitcase. She was banned from the building lastyear for breaking a fire extinguisher case during anargument.
The Oregonian reports McGrath is 5 feet, 6 inchestall and weighs 96 pounds.
Police were notified when a caller reported a manhad kidnapped a woman, placed her in a pink suitcaseand taken her to the apartment building.
Officers then searched 52-year-old Curtis T. Lowe’sapartment and found McGrath hiding in a closet.
