WisdomandBenefitsbehindFasting
Theobjectivebehindfastingistorestrainthesoulfrom(its)desiresandtopreventitfromthose
things,whicharebelovedtoit.Anditspurposeistocontrolthesoulsstrength,sothatitcanbe
preparedtoattainwhatisfoundinit(thefast)fromsuccessandjoyforthesoul.Throughthe
fast,onecurbshishungerandthirstandisremindedoftheconditionofthehungrystomachsof
needypeople.
Throughfasting,onenarrowsthepassagestheShaytaanhasinsidetheservant(ofAllah)by
narrowingthepassagesoffoodanddrink.Also,itpreventstheforcesofthelimbsfromgetting
tooaccustomedtothingsthatareharmfultoitinthisworldandthehereafter.Andeachofthe
soulsbodylimbsandenergiescanceasetheirrebelliousness(toAllah)andbeharnessedbyits
bridle.
Sotherefore,thefastisthebridleofthosewhofearandobeyAllahazzawajallandtheshieldfor
thosewagingwar(againstdesires).AnditisagardenfortherighteousanddevotedservantsofAllah.AnditisfortheLordoftheworlds,overallotheractions(donetopleaseAllah).Thisis
sincethepersonwhofasts,infactdoesnothing.Heonlyabandonshisdesireandhisfoodforthe
sakeoftheOnewhomheworships.
Sofastingisanabandonmentofthosethingsthatthesoullovesanddesires,preferringinstead
Allahsloveandcontentment.AnditisasecretkeptbetweentheservantandhisLord noone
elseisawareofit.Fastinghasanamazingeffectinpreservingonesouterlimbsandinner
capacitiesaswellasprotectingthesoulfrombeingovertakenbydestructivecomponents,which
canruinanddestroyit.Andithasaremarkableeffectincausingalltheharmfulthingsthat
preventthesoulfrombeinghealthytobeemptiedout.Sofastingguardsandprotectsthehealth
of
the
persons
heart
and
bodily
limbs.
And
it
returns
the
soul
all
that
the
hands
of
the
desires
has
takenfromit.SoitisfromthegreatestwaysofimprovingonesTaqwaa,asAllahazzawajall
says:Oyouwhobelieve!Fastingisprescribedforyouasitwasprescribedforthosebeforeyou
inorderthatyouattainTaqwaa.[SurahalBaqarah,Ayah183]
TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid:Fastingisashield.Andhecommandedthosewho
hadintensedesiresformarriagebutwerenotabletomarry,toobservefasting,makingitashield
againstthosedesires(ofmarriage).
Whenthebenefitsoffastingarebornewitnesstobysensiblemindsanduprightintuitions,one
willcometorealisethatAllahprescribeditasamercyformankind,goodnesstothemanda
protectionandshieldforthem.
TheProphetssallAllahu`alayhiwasallamguidanceconcerningitwasthemostperfectof
guidance,andthebestforreachingthedesiredobjectiveandtheeasiestonthesoul.
Sincerestrainingthesoulfromwhatitlovesanddesiresisfromthemostdifficultandhardestof
things,itsobligationwasdelayeduntilthemiddleofIslam,aftertheHijrah.Thiswasatthepoint
whentheTawheedandthePrayerhadbecomefirmlyestablishedinthesoulsoftheMuslimsand
whentheylovedthecommandsofAllah.Sotheirsoulswereleadtoitsobligationingradual
steps.ItbecameobligatoryinthesecondyearofHijrah.
WhentheMessengerofAllahsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamdied,hehadfastednineRamadhaan
monthsintotal.Originally,itwasobligatedasanoptionlefttothepeopletochoosewhetherthey

wantedtofastortofeedneedypeopleforeveryday.Thenthatoptionwastransferredintothe
finalobligatoryfasting.Andthematteroffeedingpeoplewasleftonlyfortheoldmenand
womenwhodidnothavetheabilitytofast.
Fastinghadthreestages.Thefirststagewasitsbeingobligatedwiththeoptionoffastingor
feedinganeedyperson.Inthesecondstage,onlythefastingwasallowed,butiftheperson
fastingsleptbeforebreakinghisfast,hewasforbiddenfromeatinganddrinkinguntilthe
followingnight.Thiswasabrogatedinthethirdstage.AndthisisthestageatwhichtheReligion
hassettledwithuntiltheDayofJudgement.

Allahazzawajallsays,
ThemonthofRamadhaaninwhichtheQuranwasrevealed,guidanceforpeopleandclear
proofsofguidanceandcriterion.Sowhoeverispresentforthemonthlethimfastthroughit.Anyoneilloronajourney(whodoesnotfast)shouldmakeupanequalnumberdays(outside
Ramadhaan).Allahwantseaseforyouanddoesnotwanthardshipforyousothatyoucomplete
theperiodandglorifyAllahforwhatheguidedyouandperhapsyouwillbegrateful.[Surahal
Baqarah,Ayah185]
IntheseayatfromtheQuranAllahazzawajalltellsustheimportanceofthemonthof
Ramadhaan.OneofthegreatestfavourshehasgivenusistheQuranaguideandcriterion
betweenrightandwrong.
Ramadhaanisamonthofmercyandblessingsforthebelievers.Itisaseasonforworship,
generosityandkindness.ItisanoccasiontobecomeclosertoAllahandstrengthentherelationshipwithhim.ThereareplentyofopportunitiestopleaseAllahazzawajall.Ramadhaan
isthemonthtoreviveandstrengthenEemaan,ourEemaanincreasesanddecreases.Thesignof
strongEemaanistheamountofworshiponedoes.Thedoorsofmercyarewideopenandthe
doorsofAllahspunishmentarefirmlyclosed.Theforcesofevil,shayateenarechainedup.
Nothingstandsbetweenusandsuccessexceptourfollowingofdesires.

AbuHurayrahradhiAllahu`anhunarratedthatAllahsMessengersallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid,
WhenRamadhaancomesthedoorsofJannaharefirmlyopenedandthedoorsofthefirearefirmlyclosed

OncetheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaidtotheSahabahradhiAllahu`anhum,Ramadhaan
hascome,ablessedmonth,Allahhasmadeitobligatoryforyoutofast(anNasaiandalBaihaqi)
RamadhaanisnotjustabouthungrydaysandlongnightsintheMasjid.Itisnotanexcusefor
lazinessorweakness.Tothecontraryitisatimeforstrengthandtoexertoneseffortinthe
worshipofAllah.TwoofthegreatestvictoriesforMuslimshappenedinRamadhaan,thevictory
atBadrandtheconquestofMakkah,thecentreoftheMuslimworldandthefocusofMuslims
throughouttheworld.
TherealpurposeofRamadhaanistocomeoutabetterpersonattheendofthemonth.
Ramadhaancleansawaythesinsthatmayhaveaccumulatedovertheyear.Attheendofthe
monthaMuslimshouldhopetobeforgivenandsavedfromthehellfire.Thereareseveralways
ofachievingforgiveness,throughfasting,prayingatnight,readingtheQuran,feedingthepoor,
andsoon.
TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid,WhoeverfastsinRamadhaanwithEemaanandseeking
reward(fromAllah)hispastsinswillbeforgiven.(alBukhariandMuslim)
TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamisalsoreportedtohavesaid,Whoeverpraysduring
RamadhaanwithEemaanandseekingreward(fromAllah)hispastsinswillbeforgiven.(alBukhariand
Muslim)
Toachieveforgivenessthroughtheseactionstwoconditionsmustbemet:
1.CompleteandtruthfulEemaan
2.AdesirefortherewardfromAllahazzawajall
Siyam
Fastingdoesntonlyinvolvegoinghungryfortheday.TheobjectiveoffastingistogainTaqwaa,
piety,bydoingwhatAllahcommandsandkeepingawayfromwhatHeforbids.Fastingmeans
avoidingallthatisforbidden,avoidinglookingatharaam,listeningtoharaam,speakingharaam,
etc.Otherwisetheonlygainfromfastingishungerandthirst.
TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid,Perhapssomeonefasting,hisshareishungerandthirst.

TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid,WhoeverdoesnotabandonfalsewordsanddeedsAllah
hasnoneedforhimtoleavehisfoodanddrink.(alBukhari)
OneoftheSalafsaid,Theeasiestfastiskeepingawayfromfoodanddrink.
Jabirsaid,Whenyoufastletyouhearingsightandtongueabstainfromlyingandharaamleave
harmingtheneighbour.Youshouldbecalmandcollectedthedayofyourfast.Dontmakethe
dayyoufastthesameasthedayasyoudont.

ToreceivethedesiredresultfromSalaahatTarawihitshouldbeperformedcalmlywithhumility
andwithouthaste.TwoRakaahwithhumblenessandconcentrationarebetterthantwentyquick
ones.QualityoftheSalaahismoreimportantthanquantity.TheProphetprayedlongatnight.
WhenhereadtheQuranintheSalaahhereflectedonthemeanings.TheSahabahfollowedthe
sameexample.TheydidntracetofinishoneJuzzintwentyRakaah.Whatisimportantisthatthe
Quranisreadinamannerthatthelistenercanfollowandtakeheed.
Ihsaan(GenerosityandKindness)
Sincethisisthemonthofmercy,Allahazzawajallhasmercyonthoseservantswhoaremerciful
toothers.TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamwasthemostgenerousofpeople.Hewasmost
generousinRamadhaan.ThisisachancetobegratefulforwhatAllahhasgivenusbygivingto
othersinneed.SadaqahandZakaharemeansofstrengtheningthetiesamongstMuslims.They
provideawayforthemorefortunatetoshowthelessfortunatethattheirsufferingisfelt.Fasting
shouldremindusofthehungerofthosewhoareconstantlyfastingnotbychoicebutby
necessity.
OneoftheSalafwasaskedwhyfastingwasenjoined.Herepliedsothatthewealthymaytaste
hungerandnotforgetthepoor.
Fasting,Praying,feedingotherdeedswillhelpustoenterJannah.
TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid,InJannahtherearerooms,theinsidecanbeseenfrom
theoutsideandtheoutsidefromtheinside.Theyasked,Whoaretheyfor?Heanswered,Foronewho
speaksgoodwords,feedsothers,fastsregularlyandpraysatnightwhilepeopleareasleep.(atTirmidhi,
Ahmad)
Quran
RamadhaanisthemonthofQuran.Muslimsshouldusethismonthtogetacquaintedwiththe
BookofAllahazzawajall.IfMuslimsheldontotheQuranandfollowedittheywouldnotbein
thisstateofweaknessandhumiliation.TheQuranisabookofguidance,amanualforlifenot
justforRamadhaan.ThepracticeoftheProphetwastoreadthewholeoftheQuranin
Ramadhaan.ManyoftheSalafreaditmanymoretimesthanthis.Someofthemleftotheractsof
IbadahforreadingtheQuranshowingtheimportancetheygavetoit.Readingitisnotsimply
forbarakahbutforthemessageitconveys.
LetusrememberthatthisRamadhaanifwechangeourselvesforthebetterAllahwillchangeour
conditionforthebetter.Allahazzawajalldoesnotchangetheconditionofapeopleuntilthey
changethemselves.
WeaskAllahtopraiseandgrantpeaceupontheMessengersallAllahu`alayhiwasallam,hisfamily
andfollowers.

UnderstandingtheQuran
OneoftheayaatthatmentionstheAhlulKitaab,Allahazzawajallsays:
Andthereareamongthem(Jews)unletteredpeople,whoknownottheBook,buttheytrustupon
falsedesiresandtheybutguess.
Thisayaahsaysthatamongthepeopleofthebook,thereareilliterates(intermsofnot
understandingthebookofAllah),theyhavethebookwiththembuttheyhavenoacluewhatthe
bookistalkingabout.Allthattheylearnfromthebookiswhatfitstheirworldlyinterests.They
wereselectiveinwhattheywouldlearn.Ifsomethingwouldbenefitthemintheirdunyathen
theywouldlearnotherwisetheywouldleaveitaside.Theyfollowdoubtsandconjecture.
Whatdoesthisayaahmean?IbnTaymiyyahrahimahullahsays,IbnAbbasradhiAllahu`anhuand
Qatadahrahimahullahinterpretedthemeaningoftheayahummiyyoon(illiterate)asmeaning,
theydonotunderstandthemeaningofthebook.Theylearnit,theymemoriseit,andtheyrecite
itwithoutunderstandingitanddonotknowwhatisbeingtalkedabout.IbnTaymiyyah
rahimahullahthemeaningofilliterateinthisversedoesnotmeanthattheycannotreadorwrite.
Theyreadit,memoriseitandteachityettheydontunderstandwhatthebookistalkingabout.
Theyaresatisfiedbyonlyrecitingit.
Inourcurrenttimes,youwouldfindthattelevisionstationsandradiostationsbroadcastQuran.
TheydothisbecausetheyknowthepeopledonotunderstandsothepeoplewillnotfollowtheQuran theywillmerelylistentoitwithoutanyunderstanding.EveninthestateofIsraelthey
broadcastQuran!LetthepeoplelistentoQuranforthepeopledontunderstandandwillnot
followit.Thisisaproblemthatexistsamongusnow.SubhanAllah,asif(theayaat)isreferring
tous.
ImaamAhmedrahimahullahnarratesthattheRasul(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)saidsomethingand
thenhe(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)said,Thatwouldhappenwhenknowledgeislost.Oneofthe
Sahabah(IbnLubayd)said,OMessengerofAllah(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam),howcanknowledgebe
lost?WhenwehavestudiedQuran,weareteachingittoourchildrenandourchildrenwillteachitto
theirs.TheRasul(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)said,Woetoyou!Ithoughtyouwereoneofthemost
learnedmenofMadinah.CantyouseetheJewsandChristianshaveTorahandGospel(tawrathandinjeeltheirscriptures)withthemandtheyarenotbenefitinganythingfromthem?
SoRasulullahistellingLubaydourneighboursrighthere youcanseethem,theyhavethe
Towrath,theyhavetheGospelbuttheyrenotbenefitingfromit.SoRasulullah sallAllahu`alayhi
wasallamistellingusatimewillcomewhentheQuranwillbewithusandwewillnotbenefit
fromit.
TheQuranisnottobeputontheshelf,decoratedandcovered.InfactAbuDardaradhiAllahu
`anhusaid,Wheneverthetimecomeswhenyouwilldecorateyourmosquesanddecorateyour
mushafs,thatisthetimewhenyouwillbedestroyed.Thisisbecausethatisanindicationyou

arefavouringsymbolsoversubstance,mymosquelooksbeautiful lookhowbeautifulthe
mosqueis,andtheQuraniswrittenwithgoldlettersandcoveredwithvelvetcoveringsoyou
donotwanteventouchitorreaditbecauseitlookssogood.So,youdontevenopenittoreadit
becauseitssoexpensiveandwonderful,itlooksbeautiful.AbuDardastateswhenthishappens,
radhiAllahu`anhuYouwillbedestroyed!
AtthetimeofAbuDardaradhiAllahu`anhutheQuranwaswrittenonbones,leavesandpiecesof
leather,itswasacollectionofthese.IfpeopleweretoseetheQuranwrittenonbonesorother
pieces,theywouldbequicktosaythatsuchathingisdisrespecttotheQuran Thisis
disrespectfulyouarewritingitonbones?NowtheissuehasbecomerespectofQuranbut
donttouchit,dontreadit,anddontfollowit(peopledontthinkthatnotfollowingtheQuran
isdisrespecttoit).WehavelosttrackofwhattheQuranshoulddoforusorhowweshould
studythebookofAllahsubhanawatala
Allahsays:
(Thisis)aBook(theQuran)whichWehavesentdowntoyou,fullofblessingsthattheymay
ponderoveritsVerses,andthatmenofunderstandingmayremember.[SurahSaad,Ayah29]
DotheynotthenthinkdeeplyintheQuran,oraretheirheartslockedup(fromunderstanding
it)?[SurahMuhammad,Ayah24]
Allahazza
wa
jall
is
not
only
asking
us
to
recite
the
Quran,
rather
He
is
asking
us
to
meditate
andcontemplateovertheQuran.Wehavetohavetadabbur(deepcontemplation).
HowdidtheSahabahstudytheQuran?IfwetaketheexampleofAbdullahibnUmar
radhiAllahu`anhu,hesays:IttookmeforteenyearstofinishmemorisingSurahalBaqarah.
Fourteenyears!ImeanwecouldmemoriseQuraninayear,howcomeittookAbdullahibn
UmarradhiAllahu`anhuforteenyearstomemorisejustSurahalBaqarah?
HeradhiAllahu`anhuwassohappyaftermemorisingit,hesaidandthenIslaughteredacamel
andIinvitedallthepeopletocometoafeast.Itwassuchanimportanteventforhim,he
memorisedSurahalBaqarahhemadethishugeinvitationandcalledeveryonetocomeover,
becauseofmemorisingtheSurahitwasagreatdayofcelebrationforhim.Nowwecanmemorise
Qurannowwithinafewmonths howcomeittookhimsolong?
Thereasonis,asnarratedbyoneoftheTabieen,whosaid,ImetwithsomeoftheSahabahofthe
RasulsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamandtheytoldmethatthewaytheywouldstudyQuranisthat
theywouldtaketenayaathandtheywouldstudythesetenayaath,theywouldstudythe
eemaan,theilm,andthehalaalandharaamintheayaah,thenmemorisetheayaathandthen
theydmoveontothenexttenayaath.Theywouldnevermoveontothenexttenayaathuntilthey
appliedit.Notuntilitbecamealiveandasecondnaturetothem.Iwastoldthisbymanyofthe
Sahabah,notjustone.Thisistheirmethod taketenayaath,studytheayaath,memorisethe
ayaath,learntheeemaaninthem,becauseeemaaninthebeginningisknowledge,intheinitial
stagesie.FahlamLaillahaillAllah,knowthereisnoGodworthyofworshipbutAllah,soit
startsbyilm.Thenyouhavetheemotionalcommitmenttoitlater.Youcannothavetasdeeq

unlessyouhaveilm,youcannotbelieveinsomethingunlessyouknowit.Sothey(theSahabah)
wouldlearntheeemaaninit,theywouldapplythehalaalandharaam,(memorise),thenmove
ontothenexttenayaath.
ImaamMuhammedalGhazalirahimahullahsaid,Imemorised(thewhole)QuranwhenIwas
tenyearsold,herehewastalkingaboutaproblemwehaveinthemodernmethodofeducation
intheteachingofQuran,hesaidasakidImemorisedthewholebookbutIdidnt
understandanything.BecauseofthemodeIwasin(ofjustrecitingwithoutlearningand
understanding),whenIgrewupandwasattemptingtolearnandunderstandtheBookofAllah,I
wasfindingitveryhardbecauseIwasprogrammedtojustrepeattheverses.HesaysIttookme
alotofeffort,struggle,andstrivinguntilIwasabletobreakthatcycleandstartthinkingand
contemplatingovertheayaatofAllahazzawajall.So,wehavetogothroughthestrugglein
ordertounderstandtheBookofAllah.OnekeythatmighthelpusisthattheBookofAllahdoes
notthrowitsgemsuponyou,youhavetolookforthem;itdoesnotofferusthebenefitunlesswe
arekeenforlearningandreceivingtheguidance.ThisissomethingthatisinterestingabouttheQuran.
Allahazzawajallsays:
AndWesenddownfromtheQuranthatwhichisahealingandamercytothosewhobelieve(in
IslamicMonotheismandactonit),anditincreasestheZalimun(polytheistsandwrongdoers)
nothingbutloss.[SurahIsra,Ayah82]
TheQurandrawssomepeoplecloseranditdrawssomepeoplefurther(away).Ifyouwantto
benefitfromQuran,theQuranwillbenefityouandifyoudonotthenAllahazzawajallwillhonourHisBook(regardlesswithorwithoutyou),withtheZalimeenit(theQuran)addstotheir
loss(oftheoppressors) toturnawayevenfurther.ThisispartoftheuniquenessoftheBookof
Allah.WeneedtohavetadabburoftheBookofAllah I(ImaamAnwar)amnotsayingyoutake
forteenyearstomemoriseSurahalBaqarahifyoucandoitinamonth doit,butthepointisthat
afterwememoriseitwehavetotakethenextstagethatistoapplyitandnotjustrecitingwithout

appearyoungpeoplewhowillreciteQurananditdoesntevengopasttheirthroats(alBukhari),they
havetakentheQuranassomethingthatisjustrecited,(theydontunderstandit theymightbe
doingitformonetaryreasonsbutthentheBookofAllahazzawajallisnotused(correctly).So,its
usedforopeningaceremony,orclosingaceremony,andthatsit.
AllofmylifeIamalive theQuran(remains)sittingontheshelf,andthenwhentheydiethe
peoplepullitoutandrecitesomeQuranandthenitgoesbackontheshelf.AndwhenIdie
theyllpullitoutofftheshelfandshallrecitesomeayaathonme!WhenIamalreadydead,and
thenitwillgobackontotheshelf.SotheQuranonlycomesoutinthecelebrationsandinthe
timesofdeath.
WhenthereisamarriagetheyreciteSurahalFatihahandwhensomeonediesSurahYaseenis
recited,thatisallthattheBookofAllahisusedforMarriageanddeath!SubhanAllah,theBook
ofAllahazzawajallwasthemovingforcebehindtheearlyMuslims.WhatmadetheSahabah
different?ItwastheQuran,nothingelse.QurancompletelychangedtheSahabahfrompeople

AnexampleofhowtheQuranwasstudiedisMujahid,MujahidwasoneoftheMufassireenofthe
Quran ifyoustudyQuranyoullalwaysfindhisname,hestudiedtheQuranwithIbnAbbas
radhiAllahu`anhu.HewasastudentofIbnAbbas.ItissaidthathewentovertheentireQuran
threetimeswithIbnAbbas,goingovereachandeveryayaah,askinghimquestionsaboutevery
singleayahinQuran.Mujahidsays,IwouldstopIbnAbbasaftereveryayaah,askinghimabout
itsmeanings.Hedidthisthreetimes!
LivingtheBookofAllahazzawajallandtakingitveryseriouslyinourlifedemandsthatwelove
theBookofAllah.IfwereadandrecitetheQuranandfeelyoudonthavethatattachmenttoit
thenapersonmightnotgetthebenefit.ThatcanbeunderstoodfromthesayingofUthmanibn
AffanradhiAllahu`anhu,Iftheheartsarepure,theywillneversatisfytheirhungerfromtheBook
ofAllahyoullalwayswantmore.IfwelovetheBookofAllahazzawajall,wewillneverbeabletohaveenough.
WhenoneoftheTaabieeninordertofindoutmoreaboutthelifeofAbdullahibnUmar
radhiAllahu`anhu,(theyaskedquestionstotheSahabahtoemulatethem tofollowtheir
footsteps),thisTabiee,helearnedaboutAbdullahibnUmar,hestudiedwithhimbuthewanted
toknowhowhislifewasinprivatewhatdoesAbdullahibnUmardoathome?So,heaskedthe
servantofAbdullahibnUmar,WhatdoesAbdullahibnUmardowhenheisintheprivacyofhis
ownhome?Theanswerwassimple,nosophistication nocomplication, hesaid:Hewouldgo
toprayersandreciteQuraninbetween,thatshislife!Veryeasyandsimple. Ifhewasntdoing
business,andhewasntinjihaadinribaat(thefrontlines)forheAbdullahibnUmarspenttwelve
yearsin

the
areas
of
al
Dibijaan
and
Armenia.

he

home

is
what
he
would
do.HedgohomereciteQuranandwaitforsalaah,thatshislife,livingwithQuran.I(Imaam
Anwar)kindoffindthatverydifficultasacomparisonwhenyoulookatthelifeAbdullahibn
UmarandyouobserveourliveswhenmonthswouldpassandwillnotevenopentheBookof
Allah!ForAbdullahibnUmarradhiAllahu`anhu,hislifewouldrevolvearoundtheBookofAllah,
recitingQuranallthroughouttheday.
UthmanibnAffanradhiAllahu`anhuwhosaid,Iftheheartsarepure,theywillneversatisfytheir
hungerfromtheBookofAllah,hewouldstartQiyaamulLaylrecitingQuranintwoRakaatand
thenightwouldbeover,andhewouldbestillgoingonrecitingQuran.Whenyouimagine
standingintworakaahandrecitingtheBookofAllahsubhanawatalahowmanyhourshasit
takenhimfortworakaah?Four?Fivehours?AllahAlaambutIwouldassureyouhewouldnot
feelanypainorboredombecauseoftheinvolvementwiththeBookofAllah,Allahazzawajall
wouldmakeiteasyforhim.
RasulsallAllahu`alayhiwasallam,wouldstandupforsalaahandhisfeetwouldswell,itwould
becomesoreandinjuredbecauseofstandingupallnight!AndhiswifeAishahradhiAllahu`anha
wouldsay,Whydontyourest?DidntAllahforgiveallofyoursins?Youdonthavetodothis.You
donthavetogothroughallofthispainAllahhasalreadyforgivenyouofallofyoursins.
WhatdidRasulullahsay?ShouldntIbeagratefulServent?(BukhariandMuslim).And
Rasulullahwassoinvolvedinhisibadaahhewouldntbefeelingthatpain.Hehadlovefor

WhatweneedistodevelopthisrelationshipwiththeBookofAllah,takeitseriously.
Inourstudies,letsnotgetdistractedfromtheBookofAllahazzawajall.Itisgoodtostudy
differentIslamicSciences,butletsnotgetdistractedfromstudyingtheBookofAllahazzawajall.
SometimeswewillstudyeverythingbutQuranandthenwethinkthatwestudyingIslamic
studies. But,ifyourenotstudyingtheBookofAllahazzawajallthenitwouldbeproblematicto
callthatanIslamiccurriculum.WehavetoempathiseonQuranandtohaveacomprehensive
understandingoftheBookofAllahnotonlyontheindividuallevelbutalsointhewaywe
perceiveandviewtheworld.
Anexamplebeforeclosing(thelecture):TheSahabahradhiAllahu`anhumrecitedtheQuranand
thiswastheonlysourceofknowledgeforthem,theydidntknowanythingelse.BeforeIslam
theywereilliteratepeople,ignorant theyknewnothing.TakeforexampleUmaribnalKhattabradhiAllahu`anhu,whatwashisknowledge?UmaribnalKhattabwasonceseenlaughingand
thencrying;oneaftertheother.Theyaskedwhyhewaslaughing,andthencryng?Hesaid, I
laughedandIcriedbecauseIrememberedmydaysofJahiliyyah,IlaughedbecauseI
rememberedthedayIwastravellingandIforgottotakemygod(aportableidol),idolsthey
wouldtakewiththemontravel smallidols,theyhadbighugeidolsinMekkahbutthenthey
hadportableidolstheydtakewithbackpackswiththemontheirtravels.UmaribnKhattab
forgottotakethissmallidolwithhim,whenhefeltlikedoingworshipherememberedhehad
forgottentobringanidolalong.Sohetookhisfood dates,andhemouldedthemintheformof
anidolandmadesujoodtoit,anidolmadeoutofdates. Afterawhilehebecamehungry,sohe
atehisgod,hehaditfordinner!HesaidthatswhyIwaslaughing.
Theyasked
him
so
why
was
he
crying?
He
said,
the
reason
Iam
crying
is
because
Iremembered
thedayIburiedmydaughteralive.AfterIpreparedthegraveforher,somedirtcameonmy
beardsomydaughtercleanedmybeardformebeforeIthrewherintothegrave.Andhecried.
HelaughedandhecriedwhenhewasaMuslim,becauseasaMuslimthesewerethingsthat
madehimlaughandcry,butwithoutIslamitwasntfunnyanditwasntsad itwasnormal.
WithoutIslammakingsujoodtodates,theneatingthatgodwasabsolutelyfineandacceptable.
AndwithoutIslamkillinghisdaughterbyburyingheralivewassomethingacceptable.Itwas
Islamthatchangedhim,itwasQuranthatchangedUmaribnalKhattab so,theSahabahhad
nothingwithoutIslam. Theydidnthaveanyformaleducation,theydidntlearnanything they
wereilliterate.WhattheywereafterIslamwaswhattheylearnedfromtheBookofAllah.
UmmHaram(bintMilhan)radhiAllahu`anha,thesisterofthemotherofAnasibnMaalik,studied
theQuranandrealisedthatthisreligionwouldspreadandtherewouldbejihaadonthepathof
Allahinlandandonsea.SoshewenttoRasulsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamandsaid,Iwanttobe
oneofthosewhowillgofeesabillaahinthesea,Iwanttobewiththem.ForthemthiswassomethingabnormalbecausethepeopleofMakkahandMadinahnevertravelledinthesea.
Remember,theyreinaPeninsulainthemiddleofthedesert,SubhanAllahtheArabshadno
Navyandnocommercialtradeevenbythesea theirtradeiswithYamaanandasShaamand
thatsitallinland.Theoneswhohadexperiencewiththeoceansandtheseaweretheonesinthe
coastalareas.AndnoneoftheSahabahlivedinthecoastalareas.
So,shesaidIwanttobeofthosewhogotojihaadbysea,RasulullahsallAllahu`alayhiwasallam
madeduaaforhersothatshewouldbewiththem.(Bukharihadeethno.129)

AndshewaswiththeoneswhowentintheearlyjihaadundertheKhilafahofMuawiyyahbin
AbiSufyanradhiAllahu`anhu.Sheunderstoodthisreligionthroughstudyingtheayaaththat
Allahhassubjectedtheseatous.
Allahsubhanawatalasays:
AndHeitisWhohassubjectedthesea(toyou),thatyoueatthereoffreshtendermeat(i.e.fish),
andthatyoubringforthoutofitornamentstowear.Andyouseetheshipsplowingthroughit,
thatyoumayseek(thus)ofHisBounty(bytransportingthegoodsfromplacetoplace)andthat
youmaybegrateful.[SurahNah,Ayah14]
Eventhoughsheneverwentonboardashipinherlife(previously),sheunderstoodjustbyreadingQuranthatonedaythisdeen(Islam)wouldspreadthroughtheseaandAllahhas
subjectedtheseatous.
Nowintheworld,therearetwentyorthirtythousandshipssailingontheoceansoftheworld.
Theoceansmakeupabout8/10ofthesurfaceofthefaceoftheearthandnotoneoftheseshipsis
manufacturedbytheMuslims,notevenone.Amongstallofthesetwentyorthirtythousand
shipsorvesselssailingontheoceannotonesubmarinebelongstoMuslims.Sowherearewe
fromtheunderstandingofQuranwherehementionedhehasmadetheseasubjectedtous?
WhereisourunderstandingoftheQuran?WhentheSahabahunderstoodthis,andtheywere
peoplewhohadnoinvolvementwhatsoeverwiththeoceantheyimmediatelyestablishedanavy
andcommercial
fleets.

1. Torecognisethebounties(andfavours)AllahhasbestoweduponHisslavesThesebounties[aresomanythatthey]cannotbecountedorenumerated.[Allahsays:]Ifyou
counttheblessingsofAllah,neverwillyoubeabletocountthem. [SurahIbrahim,34]
Heartsnaturallyhaveloveforthosewhodogoodtothem.Loveforablessingisfromthegeneral
aspectsofthankingtheonewhohasbestowedabounty.Itissaidthatthanksiswiththeheart,
tongueandlimbs.
2.AnothercauseistohaveknowledgeofAllahbyHisNames,AttributesandActions.
TheonewhoknowsAllahazzawajall,lovesHim.WhoeverlovesHim,obeysHim.Whoever
obeysAllahishonouredbyHim.WhoeverAllahhonours,HewillhavehimliveclosetoHim.
WhoeverlivesclosetoHim,hasattainedthegladtidings.
3.One
of
the
great
causes
[that
leads
to
having
love
of
Allah]
is
the
specific
knowledge
thatcomesaboutthroughponderingoverthecreationoftheheavensandtheearthandwhat
Allahhascreated
IntheQuran,therearemanymentioningsofthesignsofAllahthatindicateHisGreatness,
Power,Majesty,Perfection,Eminence,Compassion,Mercy,Strength,Subjugationandotherof
HisbeautifulNamesandexaltedAttributes.WheneveronesknowledgeofAllahisstrengthened,
onesloveforHimisalsostrengthenedandonesloveforobeyingHimisalsostrengthened.He
willthenexperiencethepleasureofworship,whetheritbeinprayer,remembranceorother
formsofworship.
4.AnothercausethatwillbringaboutloveforAllahistoacttowardsAllahwithsincerity
andpuritywhilegoingagainstonesdesires
ThisisacauseforAllahazzawajalltoblessaslaveandwhenHeblessestheslave,theslave
lovesHim.
5.OneofthegreatestcausesthatbringaboutonesloveforAllahisincreasingones
remembranceofAllah
Wheneverapersonlovessomething,heremembersitmoreoften.Anditisthroughthe
remembranceofAllahthattheheartsfindtranquillity.Infact,oneofthesignsofhavinglovefor
AllahistheconstantremembranceofAllahazzawajallbyonesheartandtongue.
6.OneofthecausesthatbringsaboutAllahsloveforHisslaveisrecitingtheQuran
oftenandponderingoveritsmeaning
InparticularrecitingandreflectingoverversesthatcontainAllahsNames,Attributesand
Actions,havingfondnessforthatactionwillleadtheslavetoloveAllahandAllahtoloveHim.
7.AnotherofthecausesofloveforAllahisthoughtsastothemeetingwithAllah
RememberingwhathasbeenmentionedintheQuranandSunnahconcerningthebelievers
seeingtheirLordintheHereafterandvisitingthemandgatheringtogetherontheDayof

PraisebetoAllah.
Firstly:
AllahhasenjoinedupontheMuslimsfastingthemonthofRamadhaan,andHehaspromiseda
greatrewardtothosewhofast.Becausethevirtueoffastingissogreat,Allahazzawajallhasnot
specifiedtherewardforit,ratherHesaidinahadeethqudsiexceptforfasting,foritisfor
Me,andIshallrewardforit.
ThevirtuesofthemonthofRamadhaanaremany.Forexample,thatwhichAllahhaspromised
thosewho fast, namely the gate of alRayyaan. This is the namewhichwas narrated in the
hadeethwhoseauthenticityisagreedupon.SahlradhiAllahu`anhusaidthattheProphetsallAllahu
`alayhiwasallamsaid:InParadisethere isagatecalledalRayyaan,throughwhichthosewhousedto
fastwillenterontheDayofResurrection,andnoonebuttheywillenterit.Itwillbesaid,Wherearethose
whofasted?Theywillgetup,andnonewillenteritbutthem.Whentheyhaveentered,itwillbelocked,
andnooneelsewillenter.(alBukhaari,1763;Muslim,1947).
Amongtheahadeethwhichexplaintherewardforfastingarethefollowing:
ItwasnarratedfromAbuSalamahthatAbuHurayrahradhiAllahu`anhusaid:TheMessengerof
AllahsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid: WhoeverfastsRamadhaanoutoffaithandseekingreward,his
previoussinswillbeforgiven.(NarratedbyalBukhaari,alEemaan,37).
Itwas narrated that AbuHurayrah radhiAllahu `anhu said: TheMessenger ofAllah sallAllahu
`alayhiwasallamsaid:Allahsays:EverydeedofthesonofAdamisforhim,exceptforfasting;itisfor
MeandIshallrewardforit.Fastingisashieldandwhenoneofyouisfastingheavoidsexualrelations
withhiswifeandquarrelling.Ifsomebodyshouldfightorquarrelwithhim,heshouldsay,Iamfasting.
BytheOneinWhosehandismysoul,theunpleasantsmellcomingoutfromthemouthofafastingperson
isbetterinthesightofAllahthanthesmellofmusk.Thefastingpersonwillhavetwomomentsofjoy:one
whenhe
breaks
his
fast,
and
the
other
when
he
meets
his
Lord;
then
he
will
be
pleased
because
ofhis

Inthesaheehahadeethitsaysthatthereareeightgates:
Itwas narrated from Sahl ibn Sad radhiAllahu `anhu that theProphet sallAllahu `alayhiwa
sallamsaid:InParadisethereareeightgates,amongwhichisagatecalledalRayyaan,which
nonewillenterbutthosewhofast.(NarratedbyalBukhaari,3017).
ItwasnarratedfromUbaadahradhiAllahu`anhuthattheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid:
WhoeverbearswitnessthatthereisnogodbutAllahalone,withnopartnerorassociate,andthat
MuhammadisHisslaveandMessenger,andthatEesaistheslaveofAllahandHisMessenger,anda
wordwhichAllahbestowedonMaryamandaspiritcreatedbyHim(cf.alNisa4:171),andthatParadiseistrueandHellistrue,willhavetherighttobeadmittedbyAllahtoParadisethroughwhicheverofthe
eightgateshewishes,becauseofhisgooddeeds.(NarratedbyalBukhaari,3180;Muslim,41)
OneofthebountiesthatAllahazzawajallhasbestoweduponthisummahisthatHeopensall
thegatesofParadiseduringthemonthofRamadhaan,notjustonegate.Whoeversaysthatthere
isagateinParadisecalledBaabalRadwaanhastoproduceevidenceforthat.
ItwasnarratedfromAbuHurayrahradhiAllahu`anhuthattheProphet(peaceandblessingsofAllahbe
upon him) said: WhenRamadhaan begins, thegates ofParadise are opened and thegates ofHell are
closed,andthedevilsarechainedup.(NarratedbyalBukhaari,3035;Muslim1793)

TheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamsaid,SiyamandQuranwillintercedefortheservanton

werecorrecttodo ItikaafinsomeplaceotherthanaMasjid,theforbiddanceofhavingsexual
relationswouldnotbespecificallymentioned,becausesexualintercourseisforbiddenduring
Itikaafaccordingtotheconsensusofthescholars.Soitisunderstoodthroughthementioningof
Masaajidthatthemeaningisthat Itikaafisnotcorrectexceptinitthemasaajid.)
And Aishah(radhiAllahu`anha)said: TheSunnahfortheonedoing Itikaafisthatheshouldnotgo
out(oftheMasjid)exceptforsomeneedthathemustfulfil.Heshouldnotwitnessafuneral,norshouldhe
touchhiswife,orhaveintercoursewithher.Andthereisno ItikaafexceptinaMasjidthatestablishesthe
Jamaaah(congregationalprayer).AndtheSunnahfortheonedoing Itikaafisthatheshouldbefasting

2.TheMasjidshouldalsoholdtheJumuahprayerssothatheisnotforcedtoleavetheMasjidto
praytheJumuahprayer.Thisisbecausegoingoutforitisanobligation,basedon Aishahs
sayinginoneofthenarrationsfromtheprevioushadeeth: ...andthereisno Itikaafexceptina
MasjidthatholdstheJumuahprayer.(alBayhaqeereportedonIbn Abbaasthathesaid: Verily,
themosthatedofthingstoAllaharetheinnovations.Andverilyfromtheinnovationsismaking
Itikaafinthemasaajidthatarelocatedinthehouses.)
Furthermore,Icameuponanauthentichadeeththatclearlyspecifiesthe Masaajidmentionedin
thepreviousayahtomeanthethreeMasaajid:MasjidalHaraam,MasjidanNabaweeandMasjid
AlAqsaa.Thehadeethis:Thereisno ItikaafexceptinthethreeMasaajid. (SaheehatTahaawee,
alIsmaeelee,andalBaihaqee)
AccordingtowhatIcameacross,thoseamongtheSalafwhoheldthisopinionwereHudhayfah
IbnAlYamaan,SaeedIbnAlMusayyiband Ataa.However,he(Ataa)didnotmentionMasjid
AlAqsaa.OthersheldtheopinionthatitwasanycongregatingMasjid(inwhichtheJumuah
prayerisheld),withoutrestriction.Andyetothersdisagreedsayingitcanevenbedoneinthe
Masjidofoneshome.Andthereisnodoubtthatadheringtowhatcomplieswiththehadeeth
aboutitiswhatdeservestobefollowed.AndAllah,GlorifiedandExalted,knowsbest.

Whatispermissibleforthepersonmaking Itikaaf:
1.ItispermissibleforhimtoleavetheMasjidinordertofulfilaneed.Itisalsopermissiblefor
himtostickhisheadoutoftheMasjidtohaveitwashedandcombed. Aishah(radhiAllahu`anha)
said:TheMessengerofAllah(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)enteredhisheadinmypresencewhilehewas
making ItikaafintheMasjid,andIwasinmyapartment.SoIwouldcombhishair,[andinonenarration:
Iwouldwashit,eventhoughtherewasthethresholdbetweenmeandhim,andIwouldbemenstruating],
andhe(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)wouldnotenterthehouseunlesshehada[human]need,while
making Itikaaf. (alBukhaaree,Muslim,IbnAbeeShaybah,andAhmad)
2.Itispermissiblefortheonemaking Itikaafandotherstomakewudoo(ablution)intheMasjid,
basedonthesayingofamanwhowouldservetheProphet(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam):The

Ramadhaan,soIwenttovisithimonenight,andhiswiveswerewithhim.SoIspoketohimforanhour,
thenIgotuptoleaveandhesaid: Dontrush,I llgooutwithyou. Sohegotupwithmetoescortme
out.AndherdwellingusedtobeinthehomeofUsaamahIbnZayd.Thentheywalkeduntiltheyreached
thedooroftheMasjid,whichwasbythedoorofUmmSalamah.ThentwomenfromtheAnsaarpassedby
andwhentheysawtheProphet(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam),theyrushedaway.SotheProphet
(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)said: Slowdown!Thisis(mywife)SafiyyahBintHuyai Sotheysaid:
SubhaanAllah,OMessengerofAllah. He(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)said: Verily,theDevilflows

Andshealsosaid:TheProphet(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)wouldobserve Itikaafduringthelastten

Thereisproofinthisthatitispermissibleforthewomentomake Itikaafalso.Andthereisno
doubtthatthisisontheconditionthattheirguardiansgrantthempermissiontodothat.Anditis
alsoontheconditionthattheplaceisfreefromanyfitnahandinterminglingwithmen,basedon
themanyevidencesforthatandalsoontheFiqhprinciple: Preventinganeviltakesprecedence
overbringingaboutagood.
5.Havingsexualintercoursenullifiesones Itikaaf,basedonAllahssaying: Anddonothave
sexualrelationswiththem(yourwives)whileyouaremakingItikaafintheMasaajid.
AndIbn Abbaas(radhiAllahu`anhu)said:Ifthepersonmaking Itikaafhassexualrelationsthenhe
nullifieshis Itikaafandmuststartitoveragain.(SaheehAbeeShaybah(3/92)and AbdurRazaaq
(4/363))(Themeaningofhissaying:muststartitoveristhathemustredohis Itikaaf).Thereis
norecompense(kaffaarah)thatisbindinguponhimduetoalackofanythingbeingmentioned
aboutthatbytheProphet(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)andhisCompanions.

RamadhaaninCaptivity
Allahazzawajallsaidin[SurahalBaqarah,Ayah185]:ThemonthofRamadhaanisthatin
whichwasrevealedtheQuran,aguidanceforpeople,clearproofsofguidanceandacriterion(to
judgebetweenrightandwrong).
ItwasreportedbyAbuSaidalKhudriradhiAllahu`anhu,thattheMessengerofAllahsallAllahu
`alayhiwasallamsaid:WhosoeverfastsonedayinthePathofAllah,adistanceofseventyyearsjourney
willbeplacedbetweenhimandtheHellFire.(SaheehMuslim)
ThePiousPredecessorswouldspendsixmonthsofeveryyearpreparingforRamadhaanandthe
othersixmonthsaskingAllahtoacceptthedeedsthattheydidinRamadhaan.
PreparationfortheprisonerstoreceiveRamadhaanbeginsacoupleofmonthsbefore
Ramadhaan,withbrothersstartingvoluntaryfastsonceaweekorso.OnceShabaanbegins,thefrequencyofthesevoluntaryfastsincreasestotwiceaweekandmoreapproachingthedaysjust
beforeRamadhaan.
Voluntaryfastsaredifferentinprisonasyouwill,dependingonthetimeoftheyearyoufast,
alwaysbegivenyourfoodeithersignificantlybeforeorsignificantlyafteryourfasthasopened.
Inotherwords,eitheryourfoodwillbecoldbythetimeyougettoeatit(thereareno
microwavesorcookershere)oryouwillhavetowaitaboutanhourortwotoeat.Sinceyouare
allowedawatch,butnoalarmofanysort,itreallyisahitandmisswhattimeyouhavesuhoor.
RamadhaanisdifferentbecauseofthelargenumberofMuslimprisonersfastingandsoyouwill
getyourfoodmoreorlessontimeandifthegapistoolarge,someprisonswillgiveyouaflask
tokeep
your
food
warm.
OfficersoneachwingareusuallyinstructedbytheImaamtowakeupfastingMuslimprisoners
forsuhoor,about3040minutesbeforeFajr.Suhoorhereconsistsofapackthatyouare
providedtheeveningbeforeanditcontainscereal,milk,dates,asandwichandafruit.Thereis
nohotsuhoor.
Aftercompletingsuhoorandmakingwuduquietly(takingcarenottowakesleepingnon
Muslimprisonerswhoneighbouryou),brotherswillnormallysitandmakeduainthetranquil,
predawntimewhilstwaitingforFajr.OnceFajrbegins,aquietadhaanisfollowedbyindividual
prayerinyourcell.IfyouarenearotherMuslimprisoners,youmayheartheirrecitationduring
theirFajrprayer.Fajrisfollowedbymorningduasandsomeprefertosleepuntilthemorning.
Thedaypassesquickly.Ifyouhaveastrictprogrammesofremembranceduas,Quranic
recitation/memorisationandextraprayerstodo,thereislittletimeformuchelseonceshowers,
phonecalls,washingclothesetcarefactoredin.
Towardstheendoftheday,whilstbrothersarecollectingtheirfood,theymightreturntotheir
celltofindachocolatebar,orafruit,orasnacketc.leftbyananonymousdonorwhowishesto
followinthefootstepsoftheProphets(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)Sunnahbybeingmore
generousthanthefleetingwindinRamadhaan.Sincetheseeatablesneedtobepurchasedviaa

chocolateorsnackfarexceedsitsmonetaryvalue.Itisnotlikeasupermarketwhereonecanbuy
limitlesssuppliesofgroceries.Indeed,thesecanteengroceriesarethecurrencybetween
prisonerswhichtheyusetopayeachotherforfavoursetc.Therefore,sincetherewardofadeed
iscommensuratetotheintentionbehindit,suchsmallactsofgenerosityhavethepotentialof
greatreward.Theadditionalbenefitofsuchanonymousgenerosityisthattherecipientswill
alwaysmakeduaforthedonorwhilstopeningtheirfast.
ThelasthalfhourorhourbeforeMaghribisspentaloneinthecell,inremembrance,duasand
seekingforgiveness.AsthetimeofMaghribenters,brothersgivetheadhanindividually.
Sometimes,arecordedadhancanbeheardechoingaroundtheexerciseyardadjacenttothe
wing.Onesfastopensinpeaceandtranquillity,proceededbymoreduasforthefastandthe
deedsofthedaytobeacceptedbytheOneforWhomtheywereperformed.
Asthefastopens,thereisnotthefeelingofguiltusuallyassociatedwithopeningafastonatable
fullofalltypesoffood.Somebrotherssaidthattheywouldalwaysfeelguiltywhenopeningtheirfastoutsideprison,atatablespreadwithalltypesoffoodanddrink.Theywouldfeelguilty
whenthinkingaboutwhatpoorandneedyMuslimsorMuslimprisonerswouldbeopeningtheir
fastwith.However,whenoneisontheothersideoftheguilttrip,withnothingbutdatesand

sometimesforsuhoor)toyourplainboiledrice.Alternatively,abowlofcerealorpeanutbutter
sandwich(ifyouhavepreviouslypurchasedpeanutbutterinyourweeklycanteen)alsodoes
thetrick.
Though
this
food
might
not
reach
the
quality
or
quantity
of
what
you
might
eat
outside
prison,thisfoodhasthetasteofhonouranddignity,whichcannotbepurchasedoutsideprison,
evenwithgoldorsilver.YouarefurthergratefulwhenyouthinkofMuslimprisonersaroundthe
world,suchasinGuantanamoBay,wheretheiftarmealispurposelyservedtwohoursafter
Maghrib,orAmerica,wherethefoodofMuslimterrorsuspectsisthrownintotheircellviaa
hatchandtheyneedtoscoopitupfromthefloorbeforeeatingit.[Theabovearenotrumoursbut
basedonactualtestimonies.]
SoonitistimeforIshaandTaraweehprayers.Thisisoneofthemostenjoyablepartsof
Ramadhaanincaptivity.BrothersprayTaraweehindividuallybyreadingfromtheirQuransand
thereisnolimittothetimethatyoucanspendonyourprayer.ThenearbycellsofMuslim
prisonersprayingTaraweehresonatewiththehummingoftheirQuranicrecitation:arecitation
whichcomesfromtheheartandreachestheheart.TheQuranmeansmoreinprisonthanoutside
andyouhavefeelingswhilstrecitingtheQuraninprisonthatyoudonothaveoutside.Each
versebecomesaliveinprisonandithasadirectrelevancetoyourindividualsituation.Whilstin
Taraweeh,youcanstoptothinkaboutaparticularverseorrepeatitoverandoveragainasthe
MessengerofAllah(sallAllahu`alayhiwasallam)usedtodo.Youwillnotexperiencethispleasure
withtheQuranifyourheartisrustyandfullofthedarknessofsins.TheQuranispureandonly
apureheartcanderivemaximumbenefitfromit.
Eventuallyyouretiretosleepwiththefullknowledgethat,ifAllahacceptsyourfastforthatday,
youwillberewardedbymovingawayfromtheHellFireadistanceofseventyyears.Thehadith

wajallhasmadeactsofworshipeasyforustoperform,theMasajidpreparedailywithtaraweeh
qiyaamandsuhoorandiftaar.Dowehaveanyexcusenottohaveraisedourselvesinthismonth?
ItissaidthatRamadhaanislikeamirror,atimeforyoutotrulyevaluateyourrelationshipwith
Allah.Inthismonthofeasedidyoufulfillyourexpectationsandthegoalsyouset?Doyoufeel
thatyouhavebecomemorepatient?Didyourefineyourmanners?Didyoubecomemore
charitable?Andmoreimportantly,doyoufeelyouhavegainedTaqwaa?HasAllahazzawajall
nottoldusthatitisTaqwaathatwearesupposedtogainduringthefast,AllahsaysFastingis
prescribedasitwasprescribedforthosebeforeyou,thatyoumayattainTaqwaa[Surahal
Baqarah,Ayah18]
NowthatRamadhaanisover,Ithinkweallrealisethattheleavingoffood,drinkandrelations
withourspousesonlypavedthatwayforustorecognisethegreatnessofAllahandwhat
blessingsHehasgivenus.AllahazzawajalltellsusintheQuran,...andifanyoneofyouwere
tocountAllahsblessingsyouwouldnotbeable[SurahanNahl,Ayah18].
Ourbodiesbecomeweak,butoursoulsstrengthenedthroughtheworshipofourLord.We
thoughtaftertheLaylatulQadr,wehopedforAllahsforgivenessandmercy,butthequestions
arises,whatactionwillremainwithusafterRamadhaan?

Afterprayingtaraweeheverynight,afterfastingday,aftergivingcharityregularly,whatstays
withus?WhatwillwecontinuetodoafterthemonthofRamadhaan?Whenthismonthofmercy
andblessinghasfinished,itisimportantthatwecontinuetoworshipAllah,Allahsaysinthe
Quran...andworshipyourLorduntiltherecomesuntoyouthecertainly(i.e.death)[Surahal
Hijr,Ayah99].
WeareorderedtoworshipAllahazzawajallashehasprescribed,withsincerityanddevotion,
butshouldbeawareandverycarefulnottoundoallthatwehavegainedinRamadhaan.
AllahtellsintheQuran,Anddonotbelikeherwhoundoesthethreadwhichshehasspun,after
ithasbecomestrong[SurahanNahl,Ayah92].
IbnKathirrahimahullahinhistafseerquotesMujahidandQatadahexplainingthisverse,Thisis
liketheonewhobreaksacovenantafterconfirmingit.LikeapersonwhoofferedallthatworshipinthemonthofRamadhaan,andwhenitwasover,returnstodisobedience.
IfwelookatthehadithoftheProphetsallAllahu`alayhiwasallamhesaid,Verilythebelovedactions
toAllaharethosewhicharecontinuous,eventhoughtheymaybelittle(RecordedbyMuslim)
WearenotnecessarilyexpectedtokeepupthatlevelofworshipafterRamadhaan,butratherbe
continuousandconstantinourworship.ImamAnNawawirahimahullah,saidcommentingon
thishadith,Theincentivesforusdoingactionscontinuouslyeventhoughitmaybelittle,isbetterthan
onewhooccasionallyoffersalotofworship.(SharhSahihMuslim)
Whyis
this
the
case?
The
one
who
is
continuous
in
his
worship
is
constantly
remembering
Allah
azzawajall,whereastheotherwhoworshipsAllahinagreatamountonlyoccasionally,isseen
asneglectful.
Anotherimportantpointforustocontemplateisthematteroftheacceptanceofourdeeds;this
indeedisamatterofgreatimportance.Aswearefullyaware,wedonotknowwhetherAllahhas
acceptedoureffortsinRamadhaanoranyothertime.Sohowshouldwebeafterworshiping
Allah?
Ifwelookatthepiouspredecessors,wewillseethattheywenttogreatlengthstoperfectingtheir
worship,thenafterthistheywouldshowgreatconcernfortheacceptanceoftheiractions.They
didthisbecausetheyfearedthattheiractionswouldnotbeaccepted.Allahazzawajalltellsusin
theQuran,VeilyAllahonlyacceptsfromthosewhoareMutaqeen(pious)[SurahalMaidah,
Ayah27].
MalikbinDinarrahimahullahsaid:Fearthatanactionisnotacceptedismoredifficultthan
performingtheactionitself.FudalahibnUbaidradhiAllahu`anhusaid,Formetoknowthat
Allahhasacceptedfrommeanactionthesizeofamustardseed,ismorebelovedtomethanthis
worldandeverythingwithinit.
Doesthereactionofthepiouspredecessorsmakeusthinkaboutourownreaction?Ordowefeel
thatthemereofferingofthatactionwassufficient?

MayAllahazzawajallmakeusfromthosewhonotonlyofferourdeedsbutwithsincerityand
hopeandalsohelpustoreflectonwhatwehavedone.
WewillnotknowwhetherourdeedshavebeenaccepteduntiltheDayofJudgment,butthe
scholarshavementionedthattheremaybesomeindicationsorsignsthataservantseffortshave
beenacceptedbyAllah.Forexample,aservantuponreflectionafterRamadhaanseesthathehas
increasedhisworshipandheismoresincereinhisworship.Duringthemonthhemadesincere
duatoAllah,thatheincreasesinhisworshipandnowhefindshimselflikethatAllahazzawa
jallansweredhisdua.ThisisastatenotonlyweshouldaskforduringRamadhaanandjustafter
it,butastatewhichwecontinuetobein,andalsowhichwedieupon.
