Year 11 - Mr Smith Next week we enter the ‘final stretch’ of in-class controlled assessments. The Year 11 pupils complete their final External Trust Assessments this week. Their behaviour, conduct, and attitude have been outstanding. From next week we enter the ‘final stretch’ of three weeks of in-class controlled assessments, and completion of any outstanding coursework. This will be the last opportunity for the pupils to demonstrate their performance levels in preparation for the Centre Assessed Grades. I am sure they will all do themselves justice and show their absolute best self!

Year 9 - Mr Chetwyn Remind ourselves of the importance of positive mindsets and attitudes.A short week! Time is flying by and we will soon be in Year 10 starting our GCSE subjects! As a result, we’ve been working hard in form time and assemblies to remind ourselves of the importance of positive mindsets and attitudes. These will be incredibly important tools for us all as we strive for success. It’s been a tough few weeks since we returned from Easter but things are improving, so let’s keep on pushing to be the best that we can be!

Year 8 - Mr Diaz Please encourage your child to spare a thought for those in need. We’ve had a focus on uniform and standards and Year 8 have raised the bar of high standards this week. I am very proud of all our pupils for ensuring they are ready for school with the correct uniform and equipment each day. Please continue to support your child with organising themselves when getting ready for school and getting them into the good habits we aspire for them all to have. This week we have also discussed potential charities to raise funds for during our fundraising week which is fast approaching. Please encourage your child to spare a thought for those in need and participate. The extra-curricular timetable has also been updated, Year 8 pupils can attend a wider variety of activities after school on a Tuesday and/or Wednesday, we encourage every child to attend at least one extra-curricular activity, which has a positive impact on their social, emotional and mental health development.

Year 7 - Mrs Rashford Use social media responsibly.I hope that you all managed to enjoy the bank holiday weekend. It is a shame the weather wasn’t a little better! As we move into the summer term and COVID restrictions begin to relax, it has been lovely to see our curriculum offer continue to grow and develop. You will have now received your child’s home learning report. If you have any concerns with the report please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss further. There has been a number of incidents reported that some Year 7 pupils are using social media inappropriately. It is a parent’s responsibility to manage and monitor your child’s usage of mobile phones and the wider internet usage. Please remind pupils as a school community we all need to continue to behave cautiously to manage and minimise risk to ourselves and each other.

Year 10 - Mr Hull Pupils need to be in school and in their forms before 8:50am.On a week when Manchester City secured a place in the prestigious Champions League final, Year 10 continue to show their quality and remain top of the league by every possible measure. The amount of progress, uniform standards, attendance and punctuality have been second to none. We are currently having a drive on maximising form time and making the most of our twenty minutes in forms. A time when important messages can be passed for work and personal development. Any issues addressed and give pupils a calm and purposeful start to the day. Poor punctuality and late arrivals have a detrimental effect on pupils’ preparedness and knowledge of important issues within school. Pupils need to be in school and in their forms before 8:50am, and late arrivals will incur a break detention. Please make every effort to arrive well before school starts is undertaken. Work hard, be kind.

MathematicsOutstanding learning!

Each of these pupils have demonstrated their ambition to obtain academic excellence in their refusal to accept anything less than 100%. The images below show how these pupils have aimed for and achieved 100%.

They really do want to become the best mathematician they can be!

HumanitiesThe humanities faculty is very proud of the efforts Year 11.

The focus of our section of the newsletter this week turns to Key Stage 4. It is a busy time for many of our Key Stage 4 pupils, especially for our Year 11s, who have been sitting their trust assessments over the past few weeks. The humanities department is very proud of the efforts Year 11 pupils have made towards studying for them.

Meanwhile, Year 10 have focused on studying the UK economy in geography lessons. This topic touches on some important issues regarding our countries financial status, including how transport and the economy link, as well as how de-industrialisation during the 1970-80s impacted our society as we know it today. This is one of those topics that allows our Year 10 pupils to understand a bit more about what life may be like after school. In history, pupils have been studying the development of the American West, focusing in particular on different groups that migrated and settled on the American West and the challenges the faced.

ScienceProducing salts with acid and bases.

Last week, Year 10 scientists did a practical experiment which produced excellent results! They have been learning about the production of salts by reacting insoluble bases with acids and were able to produce hydrated copper sulphate crystals from copper oxide and sulfuric acid.

Eid - 1 Day Religious ObservancePlease let us know as soon as possible. As we understand that Eid depends on the sighting of the moon, please could you inform us by School App, email or telephone attendance, to indicate which day you will be celebrating Eid and confirm with school which day your child will be absent so that we can authorise the absence. We will be having a special assembly from Ms Sayeed and a celebratory Eid lunch on the day.

We wish you and your families a blessed Eid whenever you celebrate – Eid Mubarak!

School ParkingA polite notice to parents.Since we have returned from school there has been an increased amount of traffic alongside the school near St Luke’s, and on the pavement over the double yellow lines. This is a potential risk to safety of pupils, staff and the public. We politely ask all parents to ensure that when you are arriving by car to pick up your child that you consider where you park. If possible consider if your child could walk home in a group of friends or use public transport. This will not only help to reduce the surrounding area of school of traffic but will help in independence and confidence.

MedicationAn important safety message. If your child needs to have medication at school for asthma or any other condition, you must request a medical consent form from the school reception complete and return. To ensure the safety of all pupils, any medication found that is not registered through this school system will be confiscated for this reason. If your child needs paracetamol for any reason, you must register this through the school and not issue them with tablets to bring into school Again, this is to ensure the safety of all.

Performing ArtsPupils loved taking part in our workshop!22 Year 9 pupils were selected to take part in a ‘Performing Arts Workshop Morning’ on Thursday 6th May. After working in classrooms for the past year, they were excited to get back in the studio and create demonstrate their performing talent.

Throughout the morning they took part in devising activities and also worked on extracts of the Lion King musical. Every pupil worked extremely hard and as a result, produced some very exciting performances. Thank you to all the Year 9 pupils involved!

Year 11 GCSE Grading ArrangementsAs per our previous communications with you, the full centre policy for the awarding of teacher assessment grades this summer is available for you to read at: https://www.deantrustardwick.co.uk/governance/policies/.

Our Year 11s have now completed two weeks of formal assessments in our examination hall in order to provide up to date evidence of their ability in GCSE subjects. These assessments are now undergoing both internal and external marking and moderation to ensure accuracy of the results. These test papers though, will only form part of the evidence which we will consider when awarding fair and consistent teacher assessment grades.

Over the next 3 weeks, our Year 11 pupils will be given further opportunities to provide evidence in the form of mini assessments in the classroom. I want to share with you how important it is that all Year 11s continue to attend school fully until the final leavers assembly on 11th June to ensure that they have every opportunity to show their highest capability and support us in awarding a grade which is fair and representative of their ability - not hindered by gaps or missed opportunities due to absence from school.

Post-16 TransitionAfter half term, Year 11 will be having an intensive programme of post-16 transition support which includes building career management skills, meetings with representatives from their destinations (local sixth forms and colleges) as well important life skills such as financial literacy. On their penultimate day, each Year 11 will be invited to a final 1:1 appointment, during which we will provide specific guidance for preparing for whichever destination is their first choice, and ensuring we can support with anything which they may need for results day (12th August) and beyond in September.

Please support us, and our pupils by making sure no pupil misses out on these important last few weeks of secondary school.

Culture and Diversity SubcommitteeEducating our school community on a wide range of diverse cultures and religions in school life. The culture and diversity subcommittee formed during the spring term and is led by Miss Bostock (Vice Chair of the staff council). A range of staff members meet every half term to discuss how to enrich, embed and educate the wide range of diverse cultures and religions in school life. Our meeting this week focused on extra-curricular activities that would help us reach our goal such as:

▪ ‘Safe Space’ sessions where pupils can interact with staff to discuss racial and religious issues. ▪ An enrichment week when we will educate pupils on the Srebrenica Remembrance Day and explore racial and

religious tolerance. ▪ A women’s event that will focus on celebrating and supporting woman and girls in our community. ▪ Eid celebrations on Monday 17th May. ▪ An anti-racist organisation working with staff and pupils to create solidarity and provide support. ▪ Staff training on the diversity of race and religions in our school.

Look out for more information in future newsletters as our plans unfold over the next few months. There are lots of exciting events we hope parents and carers will be a part of and take interest in through further conversations with the pupils.

Mental Health Awareness Week - 10-16th May 2021Disconnecting from work and technology to enjoy the nature around us.Next week will be ‘Mental Health Awareness Week’. We will be holding lots of activites so watch this space for more information on what we get up to!

Safe Space Talks : Racial and Cultural Healing & Awareness discussions

A new discussion space is being launched. The Safe Space Talks is an open platform for pupils to share their thoughts, feelings and opinions on racial and religious struggles

that you have faced, along with ideas for moving forward towards healing. No SLT will be present, and the rules of confidentiality will apply.

Your honesty, your experiences and your voices will help us learn, change and grow. We need your input to help us become more aware of the issues that you face. This will help to create an environment of understanding, trust and empathy, which is something that

all members of the DTA community want to achieve. We want to listen to what you have to say
