Platinum jubilee celebrations 20
Technology for the People 21
Dear friends and wellwishers,
We are glad to issue this newsletter for you all. There are some new noteworthy events anddevelopments here. For example, the PlatinumJubilee Celebrations from 1 to 8 February 2005. Allthe participants were happy. It edified all types ofpeople - adults, women, families, school children, students, classical and folk music-lovers,intellectuals, and spiritually inclined devotees. Theaverage daily attendance was around 5,000 people, and on 3 days it was the highest - nearly 10,000people. As a result of the large attendance and top-class presentations from the most famous speakersand artists of Tamil Nadu, 4 large screens had to beplaced. Some of the speakers and artists remarkedlater that they never had such a vast appreciativegathering; and invitations to them had increasedmanifold.
Some local people also remarked : `Let Vidyalayahold more of such excellant programmes. Graduallythe crowds in the nearby cinema theatres wouldreduce. Hold more tournaments in the IndoorStadium. Hundreds will attend - the local youthand older people, and even ladies!' This last remarkwas the most rewarding, because that was one ofour intentions. When people are given a chance tosee the best of intellectual or cultural programmes, people feel uplifted, and turn away from cheapentertainments. For, inherently human beings aredivine.
Another positive fruit of the celebrations is thesurprising increase in the number of studentsadmissions in all our institutions.
One more noteworthy development is the ISO9001:2001 certification of our Polytechnic Collegehas received. The ITI also, is likely to get it soon(see p.7). The fourth development is : TheInternational Human Resource Development Centrefor the Disabled (IHRDC) has been recognized bythe UGC for its uniqueness and has become thefirst off-campus Faculty of Disability Managementand Special Education of the newly constitutedRamakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational andResearch institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math,Howrah, West Bengal. The RKMVERI, grantedthe Deemed University status by the UGC on5.1.2005, held its official inauguration on 4.7.2005at Belur Math. The Graduate and PG courses atthe IHRDC are likely to begin in August 2005 (seep.16).
So, once again our good wishes to all ourwellwishers, including our staff and students. It iswith your support that the Vidyalaya is progressingwell. May the Lord continue to help the Vidyalayacarry forward its well-established Vidyaa-daana inthe service of society.

He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just, all men are not true, butteach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero, that for every selfish politicianthere is a dedicated leader. Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend.
It will take time I know, but teach him if you can that a dollar earned is of far morevalue than five found. Teach him to lose and also to enjoy winning. Steer him awayfrom envy. If you can, teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Teach him if you canthe wonder of books. But also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery ofbirds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hillside. In school teach himits far more honourable to fail than to cheat. Teach him to have faith in his ownideas even if everyone tells him they are wrong. To be gentle with gentle peopleand tough with tough.
Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting onthe bandwagon, to listen to all men, but teach him also to filter all he hears on ascreen of truth and take only the good that comes through. Teach him if you canhow to laugh when he is sad and that there is no shame in tears.
Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too much sweetness. Teach him tosell his brawn and brain to the highest bidder but never to put a price tag on hisheart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob and to stand andfight.
Treat him gently, but do not cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes finesteel. Let him have the courage to be, let him have the patience to be brave. Teachhim always to have sublime faith in himself because then hell always have sublimefaith in mankind.
Thats a big order, but see what you can do, because hes a fine little fellow.

ISO 9001:2000 CERTIFICATION
Our Industrial Training Centre, Polytechnic College Vocational Training Centre, and ITI Driving Schoolhave been certified with ISO 9001:2000 by TUV Suddeutschland, India, on 27 May 2005.
The Polytechnic College, together with its Community Polytechnic Scheme is due to be certified similarlyby the same agency in the first week of July 2005.
An English friend of mine, named General Strong, was in India during the Sepoy Mutiny. He used to tell many stories about it. One day, in the course of conversation, I asked himhow it was that the sepoys who had enough of guns, ammunition, and provisions at theirdisposal, and were also trained veterans, came to suffer such a defeat. He replied thatthe leaders among them, instead of advancing forward, only kept shouting from a safeposition in the rear, "Fight on, brave lads", and so forth; but unless the commandingofficer goes ahead and faces death, the rank and file will never fight with heart. It is thesame in every branch. "A captain must sacrifice his head," they say. If you can lay downyour life for a cause, then only you can be a leader. But we all want to be leaders withoutmaking the necessary sacrifice. And the result is zero--nobody listens to us!
However much you may parade your descent from Aryan ancestors and sing the gloriesof ancient India day and night, and however much you may be strutting in the pride ofyour birth, you, the upper classes of India, do you think you are alive? You are butmummies ten thousand years old! It is among those whom your ancestors despised as"walking carrion" that the little of vitality there is still in India is to be found; and it is youwho are the real "walking corpses". Your houses, your furniture, look like museumspecimens, so lifeless and antiquated they are; and even an eye-witness of your mannersand customs, your movements and modes of life, is inclined to think that he is listening toa grandmother's tale! When, even after making a personal acquaintancee with you, onereturns home, one seems to think one had been to visit the paintings in an art gallery! Inthis world of Maya, you are the real illusions, the mystery, the real mirage in the desert, you, the upper classes of India! You represent the past tense, with all its varieties of formjumbled into one. That one still seems to see you at the present time, is nothing but anightmare brought on by indigestion. You are the void, the unsubstantial nonentities ofthe future. Denizens of the dreamland, why are you loitering any longer? Fleshless andbloodless skeletons of the dead body of Past India you are, why do you not quicklyreduce yourselves into dust and disappear in the air? Ay, on your bony fingers are somepriceless rings of jewel, treasured up by your ancestors, and within the embrace of yourstinking corpses are preserved a good many ancient treasure-chests. Up to now youhave not had the opportunity to hand them over. Now under the British rule, in thesedays of free education and enlightenment, pass them on to your heirs, ay, do it as quicklyas you can. You merge yourselves in the void and disappear, and let New India arise inyour place. Let her arise--out of the peasants' cottage, grasping the plough; out of thehuts of the fisherman, the cobbler, and the sweeper. Let her spring from the grocer'sshop, from beside the oven of the fritter-seller. Let her emanate from the factory, frommarts, and from markets. Let her emerge from groves and forests, from hills andmountains. These common people have suffered oppression for thousands of years--suffered it without murmur, and as a result have got wonderful fortitude. They havesuffered eternal misery, which has given them unflinching vitality. Living on a handful ofgrain, they can convulse the world; give them only half a piece of bread, and the wholeworld will not be big enough to contain their energy; they are endowed with theinexhaustible vitality of a Raktabija. And, besides, they have got the wonderful strengththat comes of a pure and moral life, which is not to be found anywhere else in the world.Such peacefulness, such contentment, such love, such power of silent and incessantwork, and such manifestation of lion's strength in times of action--where else will you findthese! Skeletons of the Past, there, before you, are your sucessors, the India that is tobe. Throw those treasure-chests of yours and those jewelled rings among them, assoon as you can; and you vanish into the air, and be seen no more--only keep your earsopen. No sooner will you disappear than you will hear the inaugural shout of RenaissantIndia, ringing with the voice of a million thunders and reverberating throughout theuniverse, "Wah Guru Ki Fateh"--victory to the Guru!

Get ready for a second green revolution: President
`The time has come to go in for a second green
revolution to boost production of foodgrains to meet
the growing demands,' observed President A.P.J.
Abdul Kalam.
Delivering the 26th convocation address at the Tamil
Nadu Agricultural University here today, he said
agricultural scientists have a great responsibility of
doubling food production to 400 million tons by the
year 2020. While the first green revolution, pioneered
by C Subramaniam, was aimed at processing of seed
to grain, the focus of the second green revolution
should be on food processing and marketing, not grain
alone, he added.
Stating that doubling food production with reduced
size of cultivable land and water availability was indeed
a great challenge, he said this implied that future agri-
graduates should have knowledge of soil
characterisation, management of water, fertiliser and
pesticide. The President wanted the university to pay
emphasis on encouraging agricultural entrepreneurs
who could run agriculture as a value-added industry.
On the changing pattern of society, Kalam said the
gross domestic product had undergone a considerable

change. While the contribution to the GDP from
various sectors like manufacturing and services had
grown up, the share of agriculture had declined from
39 to 22 percent during the period 1979 to 2004, he
pointed out adding that even the percentage of people
employed in agriculture had come down to 54 from 64
percent over the years. He cautioned that if this trend
continued by 2020, it would become 44 percent.
Kalam emphasised that IT should be used for
maintaining an updated and enriched database of
region-specific information and its dissemination to
farmers in time...

Kalam Opens Amrita-ISRO project
It was a rare partnership of academics, space science
and information technology for rural development.
Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO)
objective of utilising satellite technology for rural
development and Amrita Vishwa Viswa
Vidyapeetham's vision of self-reliant villages became
a reality today with the launch of Amrita-ISRO Village
Resource Centres (VRCs) by President A.P.J. Abdul
Kalam.
Supported by the global IT giants like Microsoft, Intel,
CTS and HP, the VRCs launched in 10 villages in Tamil
Nadu and Kerala would create and implement a
sustainable, scalable and space technology-
supported community infrastructure, catalysing the
transformation of rural India.
The technocrat President has watched for himself the
fruits of such a venture as school children learnt poetry
and a female with a knee pain was consulted through
satellite.
Having initiated the process of taking IT to villages,
Kalam said that connectivity to six lakh villages was
very important. ̀ Besides electronic connectivity, there
should be physical and knowledge connectivity
leading to economic sustainability,' he emphasised.
The Amrita-ISRO model was a forerunner for such a
type of evolution in modernising villages. He urged
the sponsoring partners to come forward to set up
many more Village Resource Centres that would act
as nodal centres for knowledge, employment and
empowerment.
Narrating his interaction with Konkan fishermen
months ago, he explained how the 'hole in the wall'
(kiosk) in their villages helped children learn
computers but failed to provide vital information like
wind speed, direction, nature of waves, cloud cover
and other parameters so important for them.
While setting up VRCs, the administrators should not
`assume' the needs of villages but should visit and
interact with the benefiting villages.
Content, especially periodically updated content that
would be area-specific information, covering a group
of 20 to 30 villages and locally relevant data, was
What we need, you know, is to study, independent of foreign control, different branches of the knowledge that is ourown, and with it the English language and Western science; we need technical education and all else that may developindustries so that men, instead of seeking for service, may earn enough to provide for themselves, and save somethingagainst a rainy day.

essential for successful functioning of VRCs, he

Seven-point mission for industries proposed
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam exhorted industries to
sharpen their competitiveness for national
development.
Inaugurating the 8th edition of `Cointec 2005' -
International industrial exhibition - here, Kalam said
competitiveness could be achieved by combining
three factors - law of development, innovation and
creative leadership.
`Quality of the product, cost effectiveness and timely
delivery of products / services were the three
dimensions of competitiveness,' he observed adding
that the dynamics of competitiveness in product
marketing was called the law of development.
Asserting that innovation was the key for
competitiveness, the President said: ̀ We can see the
large proportion of new ideas and innovations are
generated by scientists and engineers besides the
university campuses.'
Kalam was emphatic that for building innovative
capacity, we required the partnership of a cluster
consisting of public and private sector industry, R&D
and academia.
Suggesting a seven-point mission for Coimbatore
industries, he called upon the civil industries to design
and develop products for world market. Design effort,
a crucial factor in lowering production cost, contributed
50 percent of the total value and quality of the product,
he said. Speaking on creative leadership, Kalam said
the task of the creative leadership was to change the
traditional role into a multifunctional one. ̀ The higher
the proportion of creative leaders in a nation, the higher
the potential of success of visions like `developed
India,' he pointed out.
While calling upon the industries to attain self-
sufficiency in critical technologies, he underlined the
importance of reviving industreis in the small-scale
sector which provided huge employment
opportunities. Indian industries should fully tap the
potential of outsourcing, he said, suggesting that the
industries gave a thought for outsourcing and
subcontracting.
Given the huge demand for traditional Indian medicine
world over, Kalam said entrepreneurs, medial experts
and social organisations should sphearhead a
movement `health for all' to reach our people.

Meeting of minds; Kalam at his best
Harnessing solar and nuclear energy is essential for
the future, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam observed.
In interactive sessions with school children at Mani
School and college students at Kumaraguru College
of Technology, the President was keen as ever to
answer the queries of young minds.
On balancing between nuclear testing and
environmental damage, he said the oil reserves of the
world might last for a century.
`There will be only two possibilities thereafter - solar
energy and nuclear energy,' he said.
`While nano-technology could help harness solar energy
better, Thorium will be fuel of the future,' Kalam said.

The Atomic Energy Commission Chairman talks of
the possibility of adding 1000 mw power to national
grid every year and the nation has vast resources of
Thorium, he said, indicating that nuclear energy would
be a boon to the nation.
Surprisingly, Kalam was not against brain drain. Over
three lakh engineers and one lakh medical and science
graduates pass out each year. ̀ There is nothing wrong
if 15 to 20 percent leave the country,' he asserted.
Kalam felt that the 20 million NRIs were `our
knowledge wealth. Moreover, they sweat it out there
and send back home 30 to 40 million dollars every
year,' he pointed out.
Recalling the glory of Nalanda university where
students from 90 countries studied 1,500 years ago,
Kalam said the time has come for Indian institutions
to be the R&D centres of the world.
Answering queries on Providing Urban facilities in
Rural Areas (PURA), the President said the
government could provide physical and knowledge
connectivity to villages to an extent. Even if he
visualised a tripartite partnership between industries,
banks and government, the PURA centres should
essentially be run by industries.
These complexes should also generate employment
for rural yough in processing, cottage and small-scale
industries as only 10 percent of ruralites pursue higher
education.
On the possibility of making health care affordable,
Kalam talked about a successful Karnataka model in
which people would have to contribute only Rs.10 per
week and avail themselves the best cardiac treatment.
Asked if the country has fulfilled Vikram Sarabhai's
dream of utilising space science for the man on the
street, he said the dream has been completely fulfilled
with the nation launching communication and remote
sensing satellites.
`We have to fulfill the dreams of another man within
15 years,' Kalam said. The way he was received by
students at all functions revealed that his Vision 2020
is quite possible.
`Impossible should be erased from dictionary.'

Realise importance of learning : President
Before focussing on the launch of Village Resource
Centres (VRCs), the President started with a
message for the students present at the function
venue as well as those at the four VRCs in Kerala
and Tamil Nadu.
Asking them to note down, he said, `Learning gives
creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides
knowledge and knowledge makes you great.' Hence,
students should realise that learning is a must....
Asking the students to note down, he said: `We are
God's children with strong minds. We will win, win
and win and have the will to win. When God is with us
who could be against us.'

Innovation is the key to competitiveness, says
Kalam
`Creative leadership improves working environment,
employee productivity.'
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam turned management
consultant on Wednesday, telling businessmen in this
city of entrepreneurs that creative leadership will help
them become competitive.
`Creative leadership is exercising the task to change
the traditional role from commander to coach, manager
to mentor, from director to delegator and from one who
demands respect to one who facilitates selfrespect,'
he said.
Creative leadership improves the working
environment, increases employee productivity and
innovation and thus leads to a better quality of
products. Improved products bring customer loyalty,
boost returns on investments and make companies
competitive.
`A nation's economic development is powered by
competitiveness,' Mr. Kalam told hundreds of
industrialists while inaugurating an engineering fair,
INTEC 2005, at CODISSIA Trade Fair grounds.

`Focus on capacity building', varsities told
Knowledge-based society
`For preparing the future generations for a knowledge-
based society that lies ahead of them, universities
should focus more on capacity-building. It should be
with a view to equiping the students with creativity
and innovative skills, which would be relevant to
society and needs. A new situation was emerging
today, with ascending economic trajectory, global
recognition for Indian technology at the international
forums and willingness for global investments to pour
into the country. It was high time that universities
started focussing on preparing the future generations
for a knowledge-based society,' he said.
