HILLBILLY OUTHOUSE #4 MOONSHINE

Ibetcha, I just betcha, that deep down you areabsolutely excited to know that the Hillbilly floatwon a prize at the Powassan Parade. It was just

great to join in withthe Cycle & CartUnit and the Klownsin this fun annualevent. Now mind you,

Cuzzins Brenda andBarb were a bitconcerned as theirrocking chairs kepta-rockin’ every

bump and hill and curve on the route. It didn’t helpthat Cuzzins Guy and Norm in the cab of the truckpulling the float kept giggling and laughing. The nextweek, the same Hillbilly Float as well as the HillbillySkunkKar were in the Labour Day Parade down onNorth Bay’s Waterfront. No prizes on that one, but our Rorab Klown Unit,

above, also made a big hit at the Powassan Fall Fairparade, so much so that our MPP Vic Fedeli snappedthe Klown picture and included it on his NipissingRiding web site. Awesome Job to our Rorab Hillbilliesand Klowns.

Below; Cuzzin’s Guy, Randy and Tiny enjoying the nice weather, who’s in the outhouse?

The Rorab Klown Unit, left to right is Ken “SI” McKenney, Fred“Lighting” Taylor and Dale “Foggy” Letts.

Skunky Cuzzins Barb and Steve pe-uuing! No one is around, everyone’s run away!

WHAT WE WILL WE CAN

As I write this early, it is always challenging to write for the future time, as I am sure you will understand. My Lady Joyce and I wereprivileged, once again, to attend the Rainbow Girls Convention in Burlington. We then were off to the Rorab Hillbilly BBQ in North Bayunder the capable leadership of the President Bert Parks. The pig roast was unbelievable and the entertainers kept us on our toes. It

was a great event. Wow, these Hillbillies sure are active especially when we also were at the Chowdown in Stouffville area. It was held atcousins Beth and Jim Johnston’s farm.

We enjoyed the Tunis Potentate’s Ball in Ottawa. The gracious invitation from my good friend and Potentate Michel Vigeant and LadyWendy. It included a dinner cruise on the Ottawa River and a good time was had by all, we could tell by the great fellowship, good food, andthe sights we all enjoyed. In early September we were present at the Trent Valley Shrine Club’s annual BBQ which is traditionally attended bya minimum of 4 Shrine Clubs and the entire Divan was present. A big thank you to Noble Aubrey and Lady Lois for yet another great event.

We went next to the Oronto Temple to visit with Queen Joyce Anderson-Johnson and Supreme Queen Margaret Ann Risk. We wereimpressed with the “unique chariot” that she uses to visit all over North America. What great advertising for the Shriners. Some of our Divanmembers were able to play at the Kingston Golf Tournament with a great meal and wonderful fellowship.

The Oakville Shrine Club under the capable leadership of Noble Martin Kossowski organized a bus trip to the Montreal Hospital, whichthey named the Potentate’s Hospital Visit on September 6th. The bus was full, several members from Niagara Shrine Club were present andthe camaraderie was special. Thanks Nobles. Lady Joyce and I were guests for a night at Blue Mountain Resort for a dinner with Scottish RiteSupreme Masonic body and the next morning we were off to Kalurah Potentate’s Ball in Ellicott, N.Y.

I was privileged to be the host for the traditional Past Potentates’ Luncheon Annual event held at Rameses. It was unfortunate that somePast Potentates could not attend.

Your Divan (with assistance) performed a 2nd Degree in Parry Sound, Granit Lodge No. 352 we all had a great time.On September 21st my Lady Joyce and I, along with 25 other Nobles and Ladies, left for our Russian River Cruise. We could not plan the

weather but the sights were absolutely mind-boggling. I believe that everyone enjoyed the story, history and beautiful cathedrals and palaceswith gold leaf and watchful attendants. All in all it was a wonderful experience and all who went enjoyed and even got history andlanguages seminars while on board ship.

On our return we welcomed the Western Night. It was a great success with a higher attendance than other years. Thanks to ChairmenNobles Tom Woodward and Shawn Hewlett for a big success.

Your Divan is working long hours planning the interior of our new premises on Queens Plate Drive. We hope to speed up the constructionbut as you know permits and red tape are always a situation to be prepared for.

Lady Joyce and I attended the Potentate’s Ball at Damascus Temple in Rochester for Potentate James Miller and Lady Mary Louise onOctober 26th. Your Divan attended the Bokhara Court Ceremonial at 3100 Keele St. on November 9th and it is always a pleasure to visit withour Ladies and compliment their efforts and dedication to our Shrine Hospitals.

I was happy to be able to attend the Erie Hospital along with your Divan member Al Berry and LadyJackie and present a cheque on your behalf along with a wheelchair.

We expect to be at the Oakville Shrine Club annual Christmas Dinner, which we are lookingforward to.

With mixed feelings Lady Joyce and I attended the Rameses Carol Service and later the DivanFarewell Dinner (also known as the last supper).

We wish to thank the Nobles and Ladies of Rameses for their support and encouragementover the many years we have been privileged to serve all of you at Rameses and Lady Joyce and Iwish you a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy 2014.

I am always mindful that you and I are Masons first and always. We all made a pledge tohonor and respect and protect each other. Please remember your obligation in our First Degree, assometimes we may forget, and perhaps you may wish to re-read. Please do.

RECORDER’SMESSAGE

Nobles, by the time you read this, Christmas celebrationswill be in full swing and we will once more celebrate ourgood fortune and give thanks that we live in the greatest

country in the world. We have so many freedoms that manyothers don’t have. We have freedom of movement, freedom ofspeech, freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize ourelected politicians, when necessary, and all without fear ofretribution.

We are not perfect. We need to work on the distribution ofwealth and food and it’s a blot on our almost perfect recordthat there are actually some poor folks that could use a littlehelp on both these items. I’m in favour of helping the lessfortunate but I’d rather see our elected officials give our sparecash to our own people first, before we start sending it overseasand yes my freedom of speech gives me the right to say that.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy NewYear. May there be peace on earth and goodwill to all peoplethe world over. Let it be known that we want the promise ofpeace on earth and that we are all fed up with the constantthreat of war hanging over us. Yes, I realize that this is easiersaid than done, but we must at least try.

In my September report, I failed to report on the SpringCeremonial in Kingston. I did send a letter to the Cub thankingthem for a very well run event but in my enthusiasm I failed tomention the Director General of the Ceremonial, Eric Wellbanks, and I would like to do that now. Great job Eric. The weather wasnot on your side but you pulled it off anyway. I repeat, greatjob.

I trust that you are all following the progress of our newHeadquarters. There is one important revision. Based on ourarchitect’s opinion, it will be at least November before therenovation plans will be ready. It will take from 4-6 weeks tohave them approved and a work permit issued. We will then putthe job out for tender, which will carry us into December, so it isreasonable to assume that the actual work will not start until atleast late December and the estimated completion date will beApril, 2014. It’s not all that bad. We have been at Keele Streetfor 32 years so an extra couple of months won’t hurt and Idon’t think we should move in until the work is completed.

Be assured that I will keep you in the picture as we moveforward. We have our next meeting with the architect onTuesday, October 22nd, 2013 for our second revision onsketches supplied to date and naturally these changes have tobe approved before we produce the renovation plans. It alltakes time so some patience will be required.

The Club and Unit Elections will be over by the time you readthis and I hope that you have all made the wise choices thatwill be required to make for a successful year ahead. In anyevent, I wish you all good luck and that if nothing else; youhave good fun and fellowship all year long.

Now to the somewhat sad part of 2013. Please be advisedthat all of Illustrious Sir Terry Lamping’s appointments for thisyear will come to an end on January 11th, 2014 and betweennow and then, the Chief Rabban will have the option to choosehis own team of appointments which includes Appointed Divan,Potentate’s Appointments, Ambassadors, Ambassadors at Largeand Temple Ambassadors. Please note: if it is the Chief Rabban’schoice to re-appoint you, he will have sent you a letterrequesting you to stay on. If it is his choice to appoint someoneelse in your place, he will have advised you of this also.

You may recall that in your obligation, you acknowledge thatyour appointment starts and finishes with the current Potentate.Note: if you are not re-appointed and you have been issuedwith a fez strip, please return this to Keele Street on January11th, 2014 at the latest so that we can re-issue the fez strip toanother Noble and I thank you for your service to Rameses thispast year regardless of the new Potentate’s decision, you willhave a place of honour in my log book, thank you.

The Divan Elections will take place on Saturday, January11th, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. and I urge all of you to show up forthis very important meeting. All positions are up for electionand not one position is sacred. You will have the choice to re-elect or reject any one on the Elected Divan and it’s importantthat you know that this is your choice whether you decide tomake a change or not. You do have a choice. Please exercisethis choice wisely. This is not a popularity contest. It is yourchoice to pick your Executive, who will run Rameses for the next12 months and you do have a choice but if you’re happy withthose already on the line, then re-elect them and then showsupport for their effort on behalf of our membership.

One of the saddest jobs I have to do is suspend all Nobleswho are two years behind in their dues. This list was read out atour Fall Stated Meeting however, as a result of this, someNobles have since paid. Those that are still two years in defaultwill automatically be suspended on December 31st, 2013.Please Nobles, this does not have to happen. Let me know yourproblem and I’m almost certain I know how to help you. Pleasecall me.

I wish all Rameses Nobles and their Ladies the complimentsof the season. I recommend you buy a Christmas tree not aholiday tree and you wish everyone a Merry Christmas notcompliments of the season. This is Christmas. Let us celebrate itwith pride. It represents the birth of our Saviour.

Thank you all for your support of Rameses and thank you allfor just being Shriners.

DAVE’SNOTE PAD

Rameses Christmas Carol Service being held on December15th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. will be the last opportunity wewill have to celebrate Christmas with our fellow Nobles,

Ladies and friends at our current location. Therefore, pleasemark your calendars to attend this celebration of the season aswe have done so many times over the years.

Our Temple Drum Corps, Organist and Soloist along withBokhara Court and Oronto Temple Ladies Choir will again beparticipating in our service.

As so many enjoyed the talents of the York Regional PoliceYouth Band last year, we have invited them to entertain usagain after the service.

We are looking forward to moving into our new Templesometime in the new year. This is the beginning of a new era forRameses. Let us all get involved in rebuilding our membershipand bringing new life back into our Temple.

With a new year ahead of us let us pray for peace and good

will to all mankind. May we continue to make good men betterand become better Masons and Shriners.

To those who are ill, we pray for your return to good healthand a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Doesn’t it feel good to have someone wrap their armsaround you and tell you that everything is going to be okay?Today, you can be that someone. Wrap your arms around aNoble, wife, family or friend and wish them Health, Happinessand Love.

Lady Marilyn and I extend to all the Nobles and their familiesa Great Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah and a Happy, Healthy andProsperous New Year.

The next event is Elections on January 11, 2014. THEREARE SOME GOOD MEN PUTTING THEIR NAMES ON THE BALLOTFOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, COME OUT EXERCISEYOUR FRANCHISE.

The Nobles of Sudbury Shrine Club have been working veryhard over the last number of years to produce a fantastic SpringCeremonial for you Nobles and your Ladies. So don’t let themdown. Make sure you attend this one. Get your rooms bookedearly as they are going fast.

Lastly, but most important, Lady Helen and I wish you andyours a great Holiday Season and a Happy and Prosperous NewYear.

The Election of the Executive to run your Club or Unit is bynow, well under way. Each and every Noble have in someway, something they can contribute to your Club or Unit, so

please step up and run for office and help make your Clubstronger.

We have a number of Nobles who have not paid theirTemple dues for the past two years. If these dues are not paidby the end of December 2013, Ill. Sir Robert McGregor will haveno choice but to read these names for Suspensions with DuesOwing. Please check your cards to be sure you are current.

The Shrine Lottery Tickets are with every Club and Unit. Ifevery Noble would take a few moments and make a list of whothey could sell a lottery ticket to, we could sell out. They makegreat Christmas gifts. Ask your neighbour, your relatives, whereyou get your vehicle serviced, your doctor, dentist or anyoneelse you can think of. All you have to do is ask, and you will besurprised how easy they are to sell.

While I am writing this article, the leaves are in brilliantcolours, when you will be reading these notes, we will probablyhave had a good taste of winter.

At this time Lady Edith and I would like to wish everyone aMerry Christmas, the very best of health and happiness for nowand the New Year.

AL’SALMANAC

By the time you get this message we, at your Divan, willhave just about had all of our Elections and Installationsdone, with a few to do in the New Year. I congratulate all

the Nobles that were elected to their Clubs and Units. I knowthat you will do a great job.

The Fall Ceremonial is now over and was well attended. Icongratulate all the new Nobles that joined. It is now up totheir sponsors to take them out and attend different Clubs andUnits and have fun.

Nobles, we all talk about membership and the only way we

can do this is we all have to try and get at least one newmember.

When a new Noble joins and comes out to a few events suchas BBQ’s or golfing, make him and his Lady WELCOME. Maybethat Noble might like to invite other Masons or Nobles to yourClub or Unit.

Nobles, do not forget the Elections on January 11th 2014.Come out and support your Divan.

I hope that you all have bought your Lottery Ticket. It is atwo-fold system, one way you can win money and the otherway you help the Shrine.

I hope that you are all visiting the Shriners web sitebeashrinrenow.com and Shriners Village.

At this time Lady Barb and I would like to wish all theNobles and their Ladies a Merry Christmas, a happy New Yearand a happy Hanukkah.

It’s hard to believe that my first year on the Divan is almostover. What a great experience it was. Both Lady Jackie and Ihave so many wonderful memories of the functions we have

attended and of all the great Nobles and their Ladies we havemet in our travels.

We have had a busy year. The search and eventual purchaseof a new home was certainly a highlight. It was at timesfrustrating, coming close on several occasions, only to run into

problems such as zoning. I do however feelthat the Nobility will be pleased with ournew home once completed. We are working

with our architect and the plans arewell underway. We are pleased withthe internal floor plan and lookforward to completion in early2014.

2014 looks again to be verybusy. Membership and fundraisingcontinue to be our biggestchallenge but there are manyexciting events planned and ifthey come off as expected it willbe a very successful year.

We are excited about the2014 Circus season. 2013

exceeded all our expectations. We have tweaked the format for2014 and improved some of the locations and hope to increaseattendance. We desperately need all Clubs, Units, and individualNobles to attend the Circus and offer assistance for the firewatch, crowd control, gate control, and we hope to haveprogram sales. I would ask that one of your New Yearresolutions is to establish a date to offer your services at theCircus. You will see a great show and you will be well lookedafter. We really do need your support; please put us into yourplans.

I am Chairman of the Peanut Brittle sales. This, I am sure, willbe a great fundraiser, not just at Christmas but year round. Thepeanut brittle will be available in various tins for any specialevents that you may have. The initial response to the programand product has been encouraging so I ask you all to get onboard, as it will make you money.

Both Lady Jackie and I would like to thank you all for yourcourtesy, support, and most important your friendship. Until wemeet again we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and aHappy, Healthy and Safe 2014.

By the time you receive this issue of Papyrus, most of 2013will be over, TEMPUS FUGIT is a saying that is very true. This year has been a very interesting year to say the least

and next year promises to be even more interesting. We need to all get behind our Membership Chairman, Noble

Jim Thornton, and get our numbers going the other way. I think

we need to look beyond our Masonic Lodges for new members. No, I do not mean I advocate bypassing the Lodge, but ratherlet's look at our families and friends for new members. Invitethem out to an event, introduce them to some of the Nobles, tell them what we do and encourage them to join. Find a Lodgenear where they live and have a Noble in that area tell themabout his Lodge etc. With your help WE can do it.

In the meantime, on behalf of my wife Linda and I, I wouldlike to wish everyone of you a Merry Christmas and HappyHanukkah to our Jewish members and all a happy, healthy andprosperous new year. May 2014 be a great year for all of you.

Being dark in July and August ourmembers were ready to return toour business of “providing for the

I was privileged to attend theCornerstone laying ceremony for the newShriners Hospital in Montreal onSeptember 22nd with four other membersof Bokhara Court #22; what wonderful, emotional and well-organized ceremonyit was. I am a proud member of LOSNAknowing our work makes a difference.

I attended our Great Lakes Unit Meetin Cincinnati September 26-29 as well asLady Lynda Stone, GM, PHP, and severalmembers of the Blue Mountain SteppersUnit from Salaam Club, Collingwood. Weall had a great time. I also had theopportunity to catch up with 11 othermembers of Jan’s Explorers Class as wellas visit with our Grand High Priestess,Lady Jan Hiebert.

Ill. Sir Bob McGregor, Recorder keptour Court up to date regarding Ramesessearch for a new home; we were all veryexcited to learn the new home had beenfound and now officially owned.

Bokhara Court #22 ladies are excitedto see the new Temple location, andeager to also be moving with the meninto our new home. Just counting the entertainment nightsat the Oshawa Shrine Club Buildingreminds one of Las Vegas. The Neil

Diamond Concert performed by MarkThomas and sponsored by our ownswinging Oriental Band is always a hugeevent in November.

And what a special night is plannedfor our annual New Year’s Eve bash.Music, entertainment, dinner and dancingat bargain prices for tickets. This year wewill have chauffeurs for out of townguests staying over in the Whitby/Oshawaarea so there shouldbe no worry aboutthe driveafterwards. I noticethat today a lot ofkids dancing don’tlook at each otherand they don’ttouch. They look as ifthey’ve been marriedfor thirty years.

Our Club’s recentSpaghetti Dinner was ahuge success as wereseveral other eventsput on by all five ClubUnits. The ladsburned off some of the calories from thatnight by getting their vehicles andmusical instruments into shape forparades from Port Perry to Orono, toNorwood to Oshawa and other fun townsalong our marching routes. At least oneof our Units usually wins a prize for bestparade float.

The Club is missing and mourning thepassing of two of our most activeShriners. Long time members, Nobles RegSherren and Ken Moffitt, were visited bythe Black Camel. Their absence hasaffected the entire Club.

One of our Shrine pals recently signedup with a dating service but quit whenthey matched him up with his ex wife. Heis at the age where his teeth are okay butthe gums have to come out.

The Club welcomes visitors to ourregular meeting on the third Wednesdayevery month. C’mon out and enjoy thefriendship.

Shriners love winter

Noble Frank Fielder’s vision for agolf course at Coldwaterbegan with memories of his

war years in Holland. Frank was a tankcorps driver with the Three RiversRegiment of the Royal CanadianArmoured Corps that liberatedApeldoorn, Holland, in 1945.

His tank was the first to cross theApeldoorn River Bridge.

After the war Frank was the owner-operator of an auto repair garage inToronto, but his passion for golf soonswitched his considerable talent andenergy to a new business, BonaireGolf Course, named after the Dutchisland in the Caribbean. The title wasin honour of the many friends Frankmade in Holland. The name andphilosophy were a good fit for Frank’svision.

Bonaire, it means Good Air, inDutch, started in 1968 and grew froma virtual wasteland to the spectacularoasis it is today.

The annual Sheba tournamentbegan in 1988 when Frank and hisson Randy donated the green fees asa fundraiser to go directly to theShriners Hospitals. Bonaire and Shebahave been Brothers ever since withlots of fun and laughs for all whoparticipate.

The Annual Sheba Golf Tournamentcelebrates its 25th Anniversary thisyear. It is estimated the tournamenthas raised in excess of $150,000 forthe Shriners Hospitals.

Noble Frank passed away in 2008.To honour his memory and hiscontribution to the Shrine, thetournament has been acclaimed as the“Frank Fielder Memorial Event”.

And now the tradition of thisannual event carries on with RandyFielder, who vows, “to continue thisfundraising tournament as long asSheba wishes.”

Summer in Muskoka is tourist, tourist and tourist while theShrine takes a break. Quiet at the moment for events butour Club does get together for an interclub Corn Roast and

at the same time stages their one annual Gala Surf & Turf eventfor the public. We’ve fun, food and a fun raffle. Happy to saythat both were awesome.

The Surf & Turf had its usual top-notch lobster, beef andtrimmings all prepared on site with good attendance from boththe public and the Divan.

The Corn Roast was also exceptional for Nobles, families andtheir friends. Eighty attendees with food fit for a king.

The picture above highlights the homegrown corn, theMuskoka-produced BBQ burgers and member-producedtrimmings. Ideal weather along with the bountiful food andsome fun raffles were conducive to great fellowship andcamaraderie. Well-done guys.

Our fall season was initiated by our own Memorial GolfTournament. It was a great fun day and, $24,000 was raised forour cause. Kudos to our planner-organizer Noble Ron Austin andhis well-placed peons who were there for all duties and support.

Our Hillbilly Unit, Outhouse #3, readied for fall action aswell. A three day BBQ sale at a local grocery store producedgood fun as well a nice amount of net funds. They followed thisup meeting as a Unit, had an election and a change of someofficers, had a real good feed of Hillbilly victuals and all cuzzinswere well geared up to bring on another banner year. Ourparading will be more colourful with their participation and wewelcome them as a fine Club Unit.

On the horizon is our annual Sports Dinner. A plethora ofwild game foods, plenty of shucked oysters, moose sausagechunks and of course, some much needed refreshments tocompliment this. A fabulous male bonding get-together andfundraiser to boot, topping the fall hunt season with a goldentouch.

Also on the horizon, in early December, comes the annualChristmas party, as an inter-Club event again. Yes, Santa will bethere presenting every attending Lady with a gift while sittingon his knee. Members will receive their earned awards, asShriners and the fellowship atmosphere will be electric. Anothergreat inter-Club event and fostering nice member togetherness.

The summer, with its quietness, was needed but the fall withits melancholic colour canopy is also needed providing a drivingspirit and the Club is ready to forge on.

It will be Christmas when this submission is read by all. OurClub extends their best wishes to all for a healthy and happyholiday time.

By Noble Jim Thornton MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

Membership is the most crucial dilemma presently facingRameses Shriners. One of the goals in writing thesearticles has been to present information objectively and

in a positive manner. But sometimes that is not possible. As Iwrite this article, on October 17, there are over 160 Nobles onthe possible suspension list, which represents about 4% of ourmembership.

For our Ceremonial in November, there have been 14applications received.

That is the bad news. The good news is there are dozens ofbrothers becoming Master Masons in our jurisdiction eachmonth. The population we have to draw from is expanding. Thechallenge: how do we, all of us, attract new Nobles? Is it: ourphilanthropy, our social activities, the fun, the parade unit, orthe people.

I would suggest it is the people, the Nobles and their Ladies. The Shrine Centres that are experiencing growth are doing it onthe backs of their social events, and Lodge visits. That might bea lesson for all our Shrine Clubs and Units as well. Let us knowwhat has worked in your Club or Unit. Has it been the twoactivities mentioned above? Use the Rameses MembershipFacebook page if you like. It is a closed page (private) so onlymembers of the page can see the posts.

Recently at the NYOSA conference in Utica, I suggested tothe Nobles that since its start in 1872 the Shrine has evolved inresponse to social changes. The formation of the Shrine in theUS shortly followed the Civil War, the end of slavery andeconomic change. The Masons wanted, maybe needed, a morerelaxed institution that would be “fun”.

The first hospital was built in 1922 after WWI and theindustrial revolution, which again brought on social change. Also the Shrine was responding to the polio outbreak.

The next large change came in the mid 50’s after Korea andWWII. Society had under gone a rapid change. Returningsoldiers wanted to keep that bonding with other men. TheShrine experienced a rapid growth. Then came the babyboomers and the social revolution of the early 70’s a timewhere the women’s rights movement charged ahead, protestsover war and marches against the status quo.

The Shrine changed again but this time with the beginningof the decline in membership. Joining traditional organizationswas not a priority. The Shrine kept on doing what it had alwaysdone, we did not change.

Now we are in the greatest societal chance of all time, thetechnology revolution. Family dynamics, business models, education methods, communications, entertainment have allchanged drastically. Are we changing with the times? Does ourcurrent view of who we are and what we do match the needsand expectations of our Masonic brethren?

With all the changes we have witnessed in the last 20 years, how do we stay relevant? I have my ideas, which have beenexpressed in many issues of this magazine. I suggest we need to

change how we do business. Not the core values Masonic andShrine principles.

Imperial is changing. Look at the new hospitals being built. They are no longer stand-alone structures. The technology usedhas reduced the hospital stays to 2 or 3 days. The introductionof Shriners Village and beashrinernow web sites has madeinformation easier to access, increasing our knowledge base.

Think about having a special meeting in your Club dedicatedsolely to membership initiatives and the attracting of newmembers as well as retention of those who are alreadymembers.

Do you have some ideas? Want to be part of the Club orTemple membership committee. Send the Membership Director(me) an email, letter or just call.

Nobles, it is up to all of us to help meet the needs of thenew Mason and get them to join the best philanthropy in theworld. You are our best ambassador and the most importantmembership tool.

Thank you for caring and what you are going to do in thefuture.

Membership is the most crucial dilemma facing us

Sam was well known in Masonic circles for his grittydetermination, dedicated loyalty and perseveranceto achieve an allotted task, while at the same time

showing a compassion and generosity to those lessfortunate than himself.

His wry smile and sense of humour drew brethren tohim from all bodies of Masonry.

As a past Master, a past President and a past DDGMhe displayed exemplary leadership capacities and he willbe sorely missed by all, particularly the Nobles ofLakeshore Shrine Club.

It is natural to associate the fez with Shriners Hospitals for Children. Because of this, meticulous attention must be given to all fundraising activities, including circuses, to make certain that such activities comply with the law of the land and that a contributor is not led to believe that his money will be used for the Hospitals when all or a portion thereof will be used otherwise. The integrity of our charity and of our fraternity must remain above reproach.

Your specific attention is called to the following fraternal and chari-table bylaws:

§335.3 USE OF NAME “SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN.” The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any fundraising activ-ity by a temple or Noble without the written consent of the Imperial Potentate and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Hospitals is prohibited.§503.10 The use of the name “Shriners Hospitals for Children” or reference to the Hospitals in connection with any commercial product or business enterprise is prohibited unless the written consent of the Board of Directors and Trustees has been first obtained.

Now, therefore, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED:1. Fundraising for Fraternal Purposes:

(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any fundraising activity without the express written consent of the potentate of the temple having jurisdiction thereof.

(b) There can be no representation, express or implied, that the pro-ceeds will be for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

(c) The temple potentate shall carefully examine all phases of the advertising, promotion and solicitation to determine that it com-plies with §335.3 and §503.11 of the fraternal and charitable bylaws.

(d) The temple potentate must approve the terms and provisions of any contract for a fundraising activity after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, and additionally, as may be required by the temple bylaws.

(e) A copy of the temple potentate’s written consent shall be mailed to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International. Further, such written material pertaining to the fundraising activity, as requested by the Executive Vice President, Shriners International shall be promptly mailed to him.

2. Fundraising for Charitable Purposes:(a) No Noble (in his capacity as a Shriner), club, unit, organization of

Nobles or affiliated or appendant corporations shall engage in any charitable fundraising activity other than for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and said activity shall not be in the jurisdiction of any other temple. Permission therefore must be first obtained in writing from the temple potentate. The temple potentate must then obtain written permission from the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees. This request for written per-mission shall be sent to the Executive Vice President, Shriners International, P.O. Box 31356, Tampa, FL 33631-3356.

However, a joint charitable fundraising activity with another §501(c)(3) charity may be authorized provided that a minimum of 50% of the net proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for Children, and the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine, on a case by case basis, that it is in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children and they grant their written permission for the activity.

(b) 100% of net proceeds (as defined in the Charitable Fund Raising-Approval And Reporting provisions of any existing General Order) from charitable fundraising must be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children except for such portion thereof as may be permitted to be retained for the temple Shrine Hospital Patient

Transportation Fund, pursuant to the Special Purpose Funds pro-visions of any existing General Order. Provided, however, if the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees determine for good cause shown, that the law of the land requires that a portion of the net proceeds must be distributed locally, then they may, if they determine it to be in the best interest of Shriners Hospitals for Children, grant their written permission for such distribution.

(c) The temple shall report the result of each charitable fundrais-ing activity within sixty days of the activity, pursuant to the Charitable Fund Raising–Approval And Reporting provision of any existing General Order.

(d) This section shall not apply to activities exempt under §335.4(b) of the bylaws of Shriners International.

(e) Each independent corporation or entity that receives the permis-sion of the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors and Trustees to raise money for Shriners Hospitals for Children, and which does not have its financial statements reviewed pursuant to §334.6 & §337.8 of the bylaws of Shriners International, shall have its financial statements audited by a certified, chartered or licensed public accountant and shall submit such audit report to Shriners International within 120 days of the activity.

3. Statement of Purpose and Disclosure:(a) Every fundraising activity must contain factual information on its

solicitation material, tickets, programs and documents, including all electronically transmitted materials, regarding the use of the proceeds.Examples:“Proceeds are for the benefit of ( Shriners)

( Shrine Club) activities.”“Proceeds are for the benefit of Shriners Hospitals for

Children.”(b) Every fundraising activity which is not entirely for the benefit

of Shriners Hospitals for Children shall prominently state on the solicitation material, tickets and documents that “payments are not deductible as charitable contributions.”

(c) There must be compliance with the Revenue Act of 1987 provi-sion of any existing general order by U.S. temples.

4. Compliance with Applicable Laws:It is the responsibility of the temple potentate, after receiving the advice of the temple attorney, to determine that there is compliance with all applicable laws in its jurisdiction for the temple’s fundraising activities.

5. Financial Records:(a) The temple shall maintain detailed financial records pertaining

to all fundraising activities involving Nobles, clubs, units, orga-nizations of Nobles and affiliated and appendant corporations. Details of all revenues and expenditures shall be maintained in such financial records.

(b) The temple must retain such detailed financial records for a peri-od of seven (7) years.

(c) There must be compliance with Financial Reporting on Chari-table Funds and Activities provision of any existing general order.

6. Notification to Nobility:A copy of the Fundraising Activities provisions of any existing general order shall be printed in the temple publication at least once every calendar year. If there is no temple publication, then a copy shall be mailed to each Noble in the temple not later than the last day in March of each calendar year.

7. Discipline:Any officer, Noble or temple which violates a provision of Fundraising Activities is subject to discipline pursuant to the bylaws of Shriners International.

By Cuzzin Noble Jim Johnston SRHILLBILLY SHRINE CLUB

Howdee cuzzins, neighbours and friends. Glad to hear wegot a new Temple in the big city of Torona. We should beable to use it in January or February. It is in the highway

27 area across from the Woodbine racetrack. Should be easy toget to for everybody.

The Western Dinner Dance was abig success and a large group ofHillbillies had a great time. Us hereHillbillies are still busy with fall andharvest parades. We hardly have time

to fix our equipment on the float. Our outhouse on the go-cartneeds a complete fixing as it is so busy, it is worn out.

Don’t forget to get more news about Hillbillies on ourwebsite: www.rameseshillbillyshrineclub.ca.

If you want to have the fun and the best time of your life byjoining us crazy guys and gals from Hillbilly country, contact ourmembership chairman Brian Korson at 905-731-4355. He willgive you all the details.

I hope all you good folks get in our Shrine lottery. We haveapproval from the city of Torona for 2014 for it. You have 573

chances during the year and wehave 1-$1,000, 1-$500, 4-$250 and5-$100 every week for cost of $104.This is an important fundraiser forRameses to support ourShrine hospital.

Our Shrine Hospitals areworld leaders in researchand teaching about the

most difficult children’s health conditions. We have 22 hospitals

in NorthAmerica andhave a health caresystem that offers care fororthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lipand palate, regardless of the family’sability to pay.

Hillbillies are like lawnmowers. They are hard to start, they emitnoxious odours and half the timethey do not work

You can feel proud of the good work we do to support theShrine Hospital. Work has been started and by 2015 the ShrineHospital will be almost three times its size, to offer more of theneeded services we provide.

Cuzzin Zeke couldn’t afford to get his car brakes fixed, so hemade his horn louder.

We are getting excited and hope you are too, about ourSpring Ceremonial in Sudbury June 12-15. Our float should be in

perfect condition for the parade. Ourbluegrass music will have them toetapping. Don’t forget to get moreCandidates for initiation because weneed to increase our numbers as we

loose about 200 members who pass on and a large number stillhave not paid their dues.

Speaking of Sudbury, Cuzzin Clem said thatthere are only hookers and hockey players inSudbury. I said my sister lives in Sudbury. CuzzinClem said “Which position does she play?”

The boys are off the porch at J. JohnsonGeneral Store with the single gas pump becausethe weather is getting cooler. We like sittingaround the old potbelly stove and chewing thefat. The cool weather has cut down on the roadkill being available, but we will survive.

And Cuzzins, I want you to know that aHillbilly divorce and a tornado are similarbecause, either way, somebody loses a trailer.

To all our Shriner friends and families notenjoying the best of health, may the G.A.O.T.U.take a liking to you, bless and keep you.

Remember Christmas is a time of giving sogive your best to everyone including yourdonations to the Shrine Hospital. See you nexttime. The good Lord willing and the creek don’trun dry.

By Noble David GilliesNIAGARA SHRINE CLUB

HHot off the wire in October. This photo smuggled in fromthe eastern block at great cost; a Maid of the Mistgoodwill ambassador promoting Niagara Falls in front

of the Kremlin. Rumour has it the KGB is trying to determine hisidentity and why he was addressed as “Illustrious Sir”.

The following statement was said by someone, somewhere, sometime and could also apply to us all. You only have toreplace the last word with “Shrine Club”. “When half of thepeople get the idea that they do not have to work because theother half is going to take care of them, and when the otherhalf gets the idea that it does no good to work becausesomebody else is going to get what they worked for, that is thebeginning of the end of any nation!”

Volunteer for something, don’t be just a “knife and forker”at your dinner meetings. Support your newly elected executive, bring your ideas and expertise to the table, join in the fun, itreally is fun.

The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting inline for. This time the waitwasn’t long and the result wellworth it. Rich aromaticmarinara sauce, tasty meatballsand al dente spaghetti awaitedthe willing recipients at theClown Spaghetti Dinner inNovember. I can still smell thatsauce, see the checkeredtablecloths and hear LouisPrima singing Angelina/ZoomaZooma. Another greatfundraising job done by theClowns! Kudos on the Trivianight also!

The easiest way to findsomething lost around the Clubis to buy a replacement. Youmust know what I’m talkingabout. Skippy can really domore than run aroundscrubbing the Maid; he’s prettyhandy with a label machineand as a sideline can do audiowork. While housekeeping onthe Maid, he fired up his fancylabeler getting ready to identifyall our switches and gauges. You’ll never guess what wefound on board; a bagcontaining every label needed, all made when the Maid waslaunched! The chief engineer

should have then laid him off for lack of work. Instead, pressedhim into replacing a bad amplifier for our sound system; noweverything is in balance and sounding GOOD; crank up thatvolume!

The Maid’s parade season wrapped up on December 20thwith our ninth greeting to Santa Claus, this time in Hagersville. Our now rotund sailors, stuffed with the buffet the Legion putson there, have tucked the Maid into her dry dock bed until theice melts and she can sail the high seas again inMay.

Niagara Hospitality Unit, that non-official group, has been busy cookingand serving at various functions.Rameses Circus Appreciation, anotherPHD luncheon at Buffalo’s IsmailiaTemple, our monthly dinner meetings,an official visit to Wentworth Lodge inHamilton, a Scottish Rite reunion, and theLadies of the Bokhara Court CeremonialDinner. The non-unit might even get it right with a little morepractice; give them a call.

For those that know me, you may not know there is anothermale member of our Clan. On one of his infrequent visits fromCalgary, I drafted my brother into our fraternity as a Shriner forthe day (actually two days). He was assigned the job of hookingin prospective customers at the Vineland Craft Fair, steeringthem to our super salesman for a cake closure and the cash.

I think he had more fun, if that’s possible than we have atour Thanksgiving cake sales kickoff. Over that weekend hereceived a spontaneous, unanimous field promotion to supersalesman. We also both received a frosty reception on the homefront for leaving his wife to play tourist by herself on this, herfirst visit to the honeymoon city. I guess I’m not welcome at hisplace now so it’s into the doghouse again for me.

George, are you sure it’s great to be a Shriner? Thanks Fred, there’s a sales spot waiting for your

participation next year; but I’d really love to fit you for a Fezthough and make it official.

Well, thankfully I have the “Titanic” all wrapped up and putaway for the winter. That boat of my sons and I are not friendsanymore after three trips to the fish(?) camp this year. The darkcloud over my head that follows me faithfully on my excursionsto the North Country covered me on every trip again this year. Imay have to change direction and go south from now on.

We almost sunk her on pickerel’s opening week; the bilgepump failed to kick in one stormy dark night in a torrentialdownpour. Broke the trailer axle, the out drive transom gasketdisintegrated and as a further insult, had a flat waiting for mefor the drive home this August. I had the audacity to try again inSeptember only to have the out drive fail completely this time,am I stupid or just stubborn? I’d like to think more an optimist;the boat WILL work, we WILL catch fish, the fundraiser WILL besuccessful, our trip to the Imperial WILL be a blast, all our Shrineactivities WILL run smoothly. This keeps me going, enjoying life, family and the Shrine with all the fun and friends we have here, and I hope you all feel the same. “What we will we can.”

All the best to you this festive season; Merry Christmas andHappy New Year!

By the way, anyone want to go fishing with me next year?

Marching with the School Band: A “Wow” Moment for Joseph

Since the first Shriners Hospital opened in 1922 in Shreveport, La., caring for children with orthopaedic conditions has been a primary mission of our health care system. The orthopaedic diseases and disorders we treat are wide-ranging and diverse. Whether we are treating bone deformities such as clubfoot, neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy, or genetic anomalies such as achondroplasia, our goal is to help each child become as independent, confident and healthy as possible. Here is one patient’s story:

When Joseph Van Hofwegen was born in February 2001, he was immediately diagnosed with caudal regression syndrome, which impairs the development of the lower half of the body. In this disorder, the bones of the lower spine are frequently misshapen or missing, and the corresponding section of the spinal cord can be irregular or missing. In Joseph’s case, his legs were bent with the knees pointing out to the side and his feet tucked underneath the hips. Joseph could crawl as a baby, but only by dragging his lower extremities. Kristen Hartless, Joseph’s mother, accepted the probability he would never walk.

The family learned of Shriners Hospitals for Children ®— Lexington and made an appointment to discuss possible surgical solutions. Janet Walker, M.D., a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon who researches club feet, limb deficiencies, limb misalignment and children with amputations, examined Joseph. Dr. Walker advised that Joseph, then age 6, have amputation surgery, followed by prosthetics.

After a successful surgery, Joseph was very nervous about preparing for his new prosthetic legs. “He was worried he would walk like a cartoon robot,” said Hartless. “Oh, and also, he wanted toes!”

The prosthetics department at the Lexington Shriners Hospital went to work and soon Joseph had his new legs. Now 12 years old, Joseph continues to come to the hospital for fittings and therapy every six months. Recently, he announced a big event in his life.

“I have been playing the drums for several years, and we figured out how to attach the drums to my walker. Next spring, I will be in my middle school marching band as a drummer,” Joseph said. “Walking, marching, playing my drums. Wow!”

Hartless says Shriners Hospitals for Children—Lexington has changed her child’s life. “In four years, we progressed from Joseph never having walked to ‘Hey, Mom, where are my drumsticks?’ For that, I simply say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Top: Joseph Van Hofwegen, 6 years old here, waits for surgery that will give him two prosthetic legs.

Bottom: Along with his love of music, Joseph also enjoys playing sports.

Commodore Brian Graham and his assistants held theirfirst Fall Theme Dance Party on October 25th at theFerndale Banquet Hall. With over 100 guests attending,

we all enjoyed an exceptional evening listening and dancing tothe music by Norris Vines and company. Norris is an exceptionentertainer as he kept everyone involved by singing whilemingling with the dancers singing directly to them and visitingeach and every table, singing love songs to the ladies from the50’s era until present time.

Norris’s band includes an amazing sax player and keyboardspecialist, also a superb disc jockey that kept us entertainedduring breaks. We also had the treat of Norris’s daughter,Natasha singing, look out Norris, Natasha has a fantasticallyclear, strong voice and she’s better looking.

By Noble Eric RankinAmbassadorLAKESHORE SHRINE CLUB

On Friday September 27th, Lakeshore and BellevilleShrine Clubs began a glorious 4-day trip toPhiladelphia to visit the Shriners Hospital and also the

Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.A loud and boisterous group began the journey early and

had a good trip down and stay at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel.Grand Lodge was an eye-opener to everyone; 9 ornate and

beautiful lodge rooms, all in different architectural designs andcolours. The entire building was beautiful. Our guided tour toldus many things that most of us knew or understood, as theywere a bit different than our work etc. here.

We also enjoyed an outstanding tour of the PhiladelphiaShriners Hospital and most had an eye opener as what they dothere, in conjunction with the Temple University Medical

center. The main focus in Philadelphia is spinal surgeries andresearch. It was a reaffirmation of what we are about and theimportance of our philanthropy.

And to top it off, we were their guests for a luncheon thatincluded staff members and a few of the little patients whowere having their lunch with their parents. It was a wonderfulexperience.

We also had an informative tour of the historical area of thecity and learned a lot of the Masonic history involved with theirtime of the Revolution. And yes, we visited the Liberty Bell.

The Ladies also had a visit to a large Outlet Mall towards theend of our stay, where they got rid of some frustration and theirAmerican money and we all came back with a lot moremerchandise than when we left home.

This successful weekend was the work and time put into itby Noble Bob Van Wort and he is to be commended for hiseffort.
