During the month of November the students in our POPS program will be learning about the farm. We will be discussing and learning about animals that live on the farm along with the farmers who take care of them. We will be expanding our knowledge about the farm through hands on classroom activities. Throughout our day we will engage in activities where we will be dis-cussing the color of the month; brown, our shape of the month; rectangle, the concept s of in and out and the sounds of the letters Ff and Vv.
We are going "Batty" in first grade! We read the book, Stellaluna. We completed a character analy-sis and identified the story's setting. We have cre-ated circle maps, tree maps, and will write para-graphs all about bats. Students will use a double bubble map to compare and contrast bats and birds. We will label parts of a bat and create our own bats using paper bags. Students are having a blast learning about bats!
First Grade
Kinder Prep
In the month of November, Kinder Prep will be learning
all about” Life on the Farm”. The children will be an-
swering questions: “What is a Farm?” “How do ma-
chines help farmers?” “ Why do farmers have animals?”
and “How does food get from the farm to your plate?”
Our concepts of the month will be top and bottom. We
will be learning about foods that grow above the ground
and below the ground. Our color of the month is brown
and our shape is a rectangle. Our letters this month are
Oo,Gg, and Ll. Our numbers are 7,8. Our rhyming word
families are –ake _ill and –ine. Our math concept of the
month is patterns. Our author of the month is Norman
Bridwell who writes the Clifford series. Our outside
game of the month is “The Farmer in the Dell.” Our
folktales are Stone Soup and Rapunzel. We will be in-
volved in a STEAM day activity where students will
learn how to make a simple pulley to help Rapunzel dur-
ing Fairy tale Steam. Our nursery
rhyme is Old Mother Hubbard this
month.
We will be wrapping up Unit 1 in Funda-tions and start Unit 2. Please continue working with your child on the Fundations packet that is sent home every week. In math, we will be looking for groups of a number and practice simple addition and subtraction using math stories. We will also be helping “Puzzled Penguin” figure out his mistakes! Students should contin-ue working on number recognition and formation. Thank you for all you do at home to support your child’s learning!
Kindergarten
Second grade has been working on the Human
Body and learning about all the major organs and
muscles. We will finish up our 3D replica
soon. Students have also been creating Narra-
tive stories about themselves. In reading, stu-
dents are exploring Folktales and Fables. It's a
great idea to read your favorite Folktale to your
child this month. We will be sending home in-
formation about our Thanksgiving Celebration
soon.
Second Grade
Turkey, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, and Pie – OH
MY! November is here with all the fun activities
that it brings. We will be learning all about ani-
mals on the farm and food the farmer grows.
Of course, we will have to make some wonderful
Thanksgiving treats to share.

Fourth Grade
November is here and 4th graders are ready for another month of fun & learning! In math we are learning different methods for long division and will begin analyzing algebraic equations. During our writing time we are are writing expository pa-pers. Science is all about fast & slow processes that change the Earth's surface. In Social Studies we are learning how state and national govern-ment works and what our rights & responsibilities are as US citizens.
Thank you for all your help in making our class harvest parties such a success! During the month of November, we will wrap up Unit 3 in math and dive into Unit 4: Multiplying with Multi-digit Numbers. This unit will help students de-velop skills in multiplying with whole numbers and decimal numbers by modeling different solutions. In reading, students will continue to close read their weekly passages. This re-quires students to get truly involved with the text they are reading. Students are noticing features and languages used by the authors and are thinking thoroughly and methodically about the details in their text. We look forward to another great month of learning!
Fifth Grade
Third Grade
Third grade is starting to work on life science, learning about the plant structure and the purpose of each part. We will be learning about plant and animal life cycles and then moving on to adapta-tions that they make to survive. In writing we have been working on and finishing our creative pump-kin stories. We then will be starting com-paring and contrasting Lon Po Po and Little Red Riding Hood. In math we have been working with area of rectangles and squares and will be moving into learning about fractions. Our unit of study in reading is focused around folktales so we have been reading Lon Po Po, and will be reading Why Mosqui-toes Buzz in People's Ears and Coyote Places the Stars. The third graders have been working so hard and learning so much!
Sixth graders are revving up for the wonderful world of algebra, which will be the primary fo-cus for the month of November. They will be assessed on their algebra knowledge in De-cember! In science, they will be planting, grow-ing, and caring for several different types of plants right here on campus. In addition, they will be reading The Secret Garden, which ties in with the plants. In social studies, students will be going back to the middle ages to learn about the rise and fall of Rome. And we are already getting prepared for our Biz-Town trip in January. Permission slips have already been sent home!
This quarter for grades K-2nd in phys. ed. we are continuing our fundamen-tals and game play, learning how to properly socialize in games by using good sportsmanship. In grades 3rd and 4th we will be introduced to hockey and small game play. 5th and 6th grade are ending hockey and beginning flag football with teams and games. Have a healthy happy Thanksgiving!!!

Social Worker Corner Hard to believe it is time, but the JO Combs School District is starting to prepare for the annual Thanksgiving food drive. Food donations may be made at Ranch Elementary till November 18. Food items such as turkeys, stuffing, bags of potatoes, rolls, and pies as well as grocery store gift cards would be welcome additions. Currently, there is an adequate supply of vegetables. If your family is in need of help for Thanksgiving or for the Holidays, please contact the school social worker, Laurie McRae at 480 882-3530, Ext 1633 On Thursday, Oct. 28, Ranch students had the opportunity to learn more about kindness and how our actions affect others. The kindergarten and first grades met with Princess Belle, learning about her own love of reading and her desires to be helpful and kind to others. Grades 2-6 were treated to the Kindness Adventure and learned more about the people and culture of Kenya. Jewelry produced by Kenyan artists will be available for sale in the mornings at Ranch from 10/29-11/4. Please see the parent letter previously sent home. On Friday, November 4, the Arizona Attorney General's office representative will be at Ranch to meet with 5th and 6th grades, discussing cyberbullying. This would be a great time to talk with your stu-dents, find out more about what they are sharing on social media, and have them explain the dan-gers of revealing too much information on social media. The following students were recognized as the Ranch Elementary School Students of the Month for October, representing Trustworthiness. They enjoyed sitting on the stage with a friend for lunch on Oct 20th.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE We are reaching that season once again where flu and other respiratory illnesses are common. We would like to take a moment to remind you of the best ways to help decrease the spread of disease. Wash hands often with soap and water for
at least 20 seconds Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth Cover your cough or sneeze with the inside
of your elbow or a tissue, never your hands Stay home when you are ill Clean commonly touched surfaces Stay current on vaccinations including your
seasonal flu shot
Hand washing is the in thing to do!!! Hand washing is one of the ways to stop bacteria and viruses from spreading. It’s not new, but it’s working! It gets rid of dirt and germs before they can find their way into your bodies. As more bacteria become resistant to antibiotics, proper hand washing is essential in protecting your health. Sanitizers can be used for extra protec-
tion after washing with soap and water,
or when soap and water are unavailable.
Did you know that our de-partment has a web page
at http://combsnutrition.com
Parents and students can view menus, nutritional information, allergen infor-
mation and contact information for our district food service leadership? Feedback and suggestions are wel-come and encouraged from our stu-
dents, parents and community.
Thanksgiving Lunch with your Child - Monday, November 14th
Come have a feast with your child! The cafeteria will be serving turkey, mashed potato's, corn, gravy, Cae-sars Salad, dried cranberries, ap-plesauce, dinner roll, cookie & milk. The cost for an adult lunch is $3.15. Please call the front office at 480-882-3530 by Thursday, November 10th to reserve your spot.
October has been a busy month in Title 1 Reading. First graders have been working hard on
blending sounds to read words. We have also been working on recognizing sight words. The
students enjoy creating and reading sentences that include the sight words they are learning.
Second and third graders have been focusing on phonics skills and finding the main idea and
important details in a story. Comprehension has been the emphasis in fourth through sixth
grades. Students are making inferences and using context clues to comprehend non-fiction
passages. We will continue to work on these skills plus more throughout November!

When a classmate is struggling with an assignment she is willing to assist them to help them better understand the con-cept. Alexis always follows classroom rules and procedures and will remind others to help them make good choices. Alexis is also a good friend. She treats everyone with respect and equally.
