- Theodore Roosevelt, former USA President

Since the time the first small citiesdeveloped in the Middle East 5 000years ago, urban centres have been

predominantly plantless. City dwellersoccupied houses or apartments thatcompletely occupied the available space.Only royalty or the very wealthy indulged in gardens of any sort, whilst the morebenign rulers provided open spaces in theform of parks – open to the public forrecreation.

This model remained basically unchangeduntil the advent of the railway in the 19th

One could now have a house witha garden of some sort in the newlydeveloping suburbs and commute to workeach day. Although most homeownerscreated their own rudimentary gardens, this

practice, never-the-less, led to the first self-trained garden designers.

It took another 150 years and the arrivalof buses and cars for property developersto conceive of the idea of office parks onthe outskirts of the suburbs. For the firsttime in history, places of work werecombined with landscapes.

At this stage, South Africa’s experiencedlandscapers saw the need to establish aprofessional body to enable propertydevelopers – as well as homeowners – tohave a surety of professionalism whenappointing a landscaper to undertake aproject.

Glenn Norrie of Capescapes wasresponsible for constructing andplanting the landscape envisaged by

OvP Associates at the new Life SciencesFaculty at the University of the WesternCape. The project comprised paved andplanted areas surrounding the new building,as well as a non-accessible roof gardenabove lecture rooms.

Particular difficulties of the site wereworking with the poor quality soils that

The University is next to the Cape FlatsNature Reserve, so it was essential that theplantings harmonised with the naturalvegetation. For this purpose, with the help ofthe Horticultural Department of the

A conference is held annually for all members of the green industry, including SALI.This is the highlight of the landscape contractingcalendar, as the SALI Awards of Excellence takes place at a function

during this conference.SALI member projects of the preceding year, after extensive reviewing by a

panel of judges, are evaluated and awarded one or the other prestigious trophyand/or certificates of excellence.

Purpose of the AwardsThis Awards of Excellence programme gives SALI members the chance toshowcase their skills, workmanship and professionalism to their peers, propertydevelopers, business parks, golf estates, industrial parks, hotel and tourismdevelopments, municipal and provincial parks departments, prisons, mines andthe green industry as a whole.

The Awards of Excellence also gives members the opportunity to marketthemselves directly to potential clients through media exposure and throughtheir own marketing campaigns.Twelve trophies are awarded for outstandingwork in a variety of categories.

The SALI constitution also prescribes that each member must submit at least one project in a two-year cycle. This is a condition of continued SALI principalmembership. It also gives SALI the opportunity to check that the workmanship, skills level and professionalism of its members is kept to a high standard.

JudgingJudging is done at two levels. The first level is done on a regional basis withteams of judges visiting all the projects entered. Each region appoints its ownjudges. All the projects that score 75% plus are then judged by a national judge, who travels to all those projects and together with the regional results, willassess the projects and make the final decision on the awards.

The National Judge is appointed by the SALI National Executive. Piet Vosloo, lecturer in Landscape Architecture at the University of Pretoria, is the currentNational Judge. National judges serve a 3-5 year term to ensure continuity.

Projects are eligible for the following awards:Merit: 60-70%Bronze: 71-75%Silver : 76-79%Gold: 80% plusAny member whose projects score less than 60% will be visited by a regional

executive member who will investigate why that project has scored below theacceptable level of 60%.The member will be required to submit a project forevaluation in the following Awards of Excellence program. Should the contractorfail to meet the minimum level required of 60% in the next year, then thatmember may have his or her membership suspended or terminated subject toan investigation by the regional executive.

2011 Awards of Excellence

Capescapes won the SALI Shield, the highesthonour given at the 2011 South AfricanLandscapers Institute Awards of Excellence fortheir landscaping of/at the University of theWestern Cape’s Life Science Faculty

University, attractive local indigenous plants wereidentified, and these made up the bulk of the plantmaterial. A particular advantage of the local plants isthat they are adapted to survive the harsh prevailingconditions of the area – dry soil and strong winds.Never-the-less, it takes a good designer to create anattractive landscape with a limited palette of plants.

All material for the roof garden was transferred bycrane. The prepared ‘sticky’ soil remained in place onthe slightly sloping site until the roots of the selectedsoil-binding plants were established. The plants arepredominantly low-growing indigenous groundcoversand small shrubs. This ‘green’ roof helps to keep thebuilding beneath it cool. And in all probability it is thelargest roof garden in southern Africa!

The roof garden is inaccessible to the public andcan only be viewed from neighbouring buildings.Never-the-less, Glenn Norrie created an attractivedesign. He utilised the air vents as focal points, andadded a decorative path to create visual interest. Dripirrigation is used throughout the landscape.

The judges were particularly impressed with thesoil preparation for this windy site. They regarded thelandscaping as exceptionally attractive given the variousdemands and limitations of the site.

“The trouble with water - and there is trouble with water - is that they’re not making any more of it”

- Marq de Villiers, Water 2000

Rand Water has been encouraging the installation of Water Wise landscapesas part of their Water Wise campaign, which started in 1995. To recogniseprofessional expertise in this sphere Rand Water sponsored a Water Wise

Trophy to be awarded to the landscaper of the most Water Wise landscape atSALI’s annual Awards of Excellence.

It is estimated that 30-55% of domestic urban water is used on traditionallandscapes. Applying Water Wise principles reduces this amount considerably. Thistranslates into benefits for the landscape owner in terms of cost savings and lesstime spent on maintenance. The Rand Water Water Wise Trophy recognises theimportance of professional landscapers in supporting the Water Wise cause.

Winners of this trophy have demonstrated how Water Wise landscaping isapplicable to all landscape developments in a wide variety of projects. Indeed, SALImember landscapers are now fully conversant with the techniques and principlesthat can be implemented to keep the irrigation needs of a landscape to aminimum, and such installations have aroused the interest and admiration ofproperty developers throughout South Africa as well as in semi-arid countriesabroad.

What makes a landscape a Water Wisewinner? When awarding a Water Wise trophy, the judges look for the number of WaterWise principles that have been utilised (see page 4). Innovative approaches scoreextra points, for example, using rainwater from a downspout to fill up a pond, orusing pathways or ‘dry river beds’ to direct runoff into water features.

A Water Wise garden must also be attractive, fulfilling the design criteria of line, flow, rhythm, form, focal points, colour and function. So award-winning landscapesneed to showcase Water Wise principles in a way that it makes people want tomake their property Water Wise.

While a desert landscape of cacti and succulents would use very little water, itsappeal is more limited than a more conventional landscape style. That said, if alandscape utilises a less conventional design of succulents that is so well designedthat it could kindle a whole new trend in garden design and thereby promoteWater Wise gardening, such a landscape would be a strong contender for theTrophy.

The landscape that illustrates how a conventional design can be made WaterWise in an attractive way also has a good chance of winning the Trophy. Forexample, many people want a rose garden. By zoning the roses into one area, composting well and mulching the soil, the rose garden can be made more WaterWise. If the rest of the landscape fulfills Water Wise criteria it may well beawarded the Trophy.

Landscapes that are totally locally indigenous and therefore highly waterefficient, can on the other hand be dull – or exciting. It is the latter element thatthe judges look for – as well as the usual criteria – that make for an award-winningWater Wise landscape.

2011 Water Wise TrophyWinner

Vula Environmental Services’s massive, but hugely water efficient, revegetationproject at the Berg River dam made thisproject a clear Water Wise winner.

It took Vula Environmental Services five years torevegetate the dam wall and adjacent area of the newlyconstructed Berg River Dam in the Cape. The areabeneath the wall, where the construction team wasbased, was subject to massive earthworks, and therewas huge disturbance to, and destruction of, the naturalvegetation.

Maintaining the stability of the steeply sloping damwall was an ongoing process. Planting and hydroseedingwith a wide diversity of local indigenous plants was donefrom May to July over a 3 year period to maximise onthe winter rainfall. Each planting hole contained moistureretaining Stockosorb. No additional irrigation is required.

The regional judges deemed this five year project an incredible success that demonstrated outstandingknowledge of the mountain fynbos ecosystem.

“If people destroy something replaceable made by man, they are called vandals; if they destroy something irreplaceable made by God, they are called developers”

- Joseph Wood Crutch

With planet Earth under threat from climate change, urban sprawland societal changes, the 21st century has resulted in a plethoraof research on environmental matters. And, as never before, the

public has become aware of the fragility of our fauna and flora, and watersupplies. We now have a new consciousness of the importance of ‘greenlungs’ in urban areas and the preservation of wetlands and ecosystems.

For example, research shows that a lack ofshade trees causes cities to bear the burdenof ‘heat islands’, which are 5°C to 15°Chotter than outlying rural areas. Streets, sidewalks and paved areas reflect heat andglare during the day and retain significantamounts of heat energy during the night. As a result, cooling seldom occurs in built-upareas. In towns in scorching hot areas ofSouth Africa, such conditions are enervatingand emotionally trying for both inhabitantsand workers – and yet relatively easy to rectify.

Landscaping around hotels, commercialproperties and factories is now acknowledgedto be able to play a role in environmentalpreservation, as well as influencing physical

and mental wellbeing. Property owners and developers are now aware of theirresponsibilities in preserving the environmentto the best of their ability for futuregenerations. Members of the South AfricanLandscapers Institute are thoroughlyproficient in the design and installation oflandscapes that are environmentally friendlyin every possible sense.

The environmental benefits oflandscaping• Grass, trees and plants reduce soil

erosion. Erosion is a major cause of waterpollution in ponds, streams, rivers and dams.

• Trees absorb climate-endangering carbondioxide from the atmosphere. One tree

removes 12kg of carbon dioxide from theair each year.

• Plants fight pollution.Without the filter ofplant material, there is an increasedprevalence of dust that carries disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

• Rainfall on planted up areas permeatesinto the friable soil. It then replenishessoil moisture, recharges the groundwatersupplies and/or flows into nearby streams, filtered by the roots of plants. Note thatrainwater is clean water. Where soil iscovered with an impermeable surface ofpaving or concrete, rainwater passes overpolluted surfaces before enteringstormwater drains. Stormwater requires

expensive purification treatment tomake it potable.

• A permeable surface serves as aflood control system, lessening theimpact of runaway stormwater inurban areas.

• Shrubs and trees reduce noisepollution by up to 50%.

• Appropriate plant material, canlower the heating and cooling costsof a building by as much as 20%when correctly positioned.

• Trees absorb heat. They can absorbas much as 85% of the sun’s directheat. One large tree can absorb asmuch heat as several window airconditioners and can lowertemperatures by 5°C.

• Wildfire damage to a property canbe reduced with correctly chosenand positioned plants.

• Planted areas provide urbanhabitats in ever expanding cities forour increasingly endangered wildlifespecies.

- Cree Indian Prophecy

Social benefits of landscapingAll members of society are currently cooperating to make South Africa a better countryfor all. In this regard the findings of a recent study that suggest that green spaces reducecrime are particularly relevant.

The study demonstrated that exposure to nature may reduce aggression and violencein inner-city neighbourhoods. Compared to residents living near barren areas, thosenearer to green spaces were typically friendlier and more social. This in turn createsstronger community ties and offers more opportunities for a cohesive and cooperativeneighbourhood.

The study documentedthe following:• Landscaped settings in

inner cities can helpreduce the stress causedby everyday issues relatedto poverty and urbancongestion.

• Exposure to green spacescan mitigate chronicmental fatigue, which canlead to irritability, inattentiveness andimpulsive behaviour.

Life-enhancing benefitsof landscapingConsidering the stresses imposed by urbanlife in modern South African cities, both onemployers and employees, the benefit ofattractive work surrounds with a tranquiloutdoor area for lunch breaks would seemconsiderable.

A Gallop survey carried out in the USAin 1999 investigated the benefits of a gardenas perceived by homeowners. Many of thefindings are also applicable to commerciallandscapes:• Adds beauty and relaxation for the family,

employees or visitors – 54.0%.• Reflects positively on its owner – 53.2%.• Offers a comfortable place to entertain,

work or visit – 47.4%.• Increases real estate value – 44.1%.• Beautifies the neighbourhood – 43.3%.• Provides a safe, high-quality play area for

children – 36.7%.• Provides an exercise area for pets –21.3%.• Helps purify the air – 19.9%.• Helps cool the air –17.8%.• Provides a natural water filter to protect

water quality and the environment –13.5%.
