He was an unpopular president (unlike Barack Obama) so eleven Southern states withdrew from the Union, and set up their own independent government. This caused the Civil War to occur. A fight between the Northern and Southern states.

It was a brutal event, and many lives were disturbed. But after the four year conflict, the South were defeated and there was no more slavery.

Martin Luther King

“I have a dream”. How lives changed In the 1950’s the black race were not aloud to be

in contact with white people. They had separate theatres, schools, busses, restaurants and a lot near amore things as well. And Black areas were run down in comparison to where the whites spent their time.

Martin Luther King strongly disagreed with this, so he did what no other had the guts to do. He stood up for black peoples rights and gave his inspiring “ I have a dream” speech.

He stood in a park with thousands of people listening and watching. Blacks and some whites agreed that what was happening was wrong.

Just this one single man and his amazing speech, helped form the life that American people have today.

King was assassinated in 1968, by James Earl Ray, a small-time criminal. It was a tragic but memorable day.
