RANDOM THOUGHTS DIFERENTES PENSAMIENTOS

from Father Bill Promesso

Lent III The Ten Commandments have a long history in our nation, but they came from another nation long ago. These commandments were given by God to Moses, to ensure a proper relationship between the Lord and the chosen people, and the people among themselves. Note that the commandments aren’t “Christian” in the sense that they come from our Christian sources. They are from the Old Testament and the Jewish Israelite tradition. Jesus’ double commandment of love reflects a similar disposition for good and healthy relationships. When people refer to the Ten Commandments as hard and fast rules that supersede anything else, I remind them that Jesus, in the new covenant, gave two commandments: to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself. Come, Encounter Christ Sunday afternoon offers a time for quiet prayer in the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. The Mass is our more common way to worship. But adoration is another way in which to offer praise and thanks to God for the gift of Real Presence that is celebrated and received. After a quiet afternoon, we will be rockin’ Riverview and praising the Lord in song and scripture, receive God’s benediction and encountering Christ.

Journey to Jerusalem 2018 Report #3

Please remember the following:

• REPORTING IS ANONYMOUS. And may be done individually, as a family, or any other group.

• You may join the Journey at any time and miles may be submitted retroactive to Ash Wednesday.

• If you want to save time when coming to Mass, write your miles on any old piece of paper before Mass and just drop it in the Miles Box on the table in the Gathering Area as you are passing through.

The Journey:

• Traveling west the 12,112 miles to Jerusalem requires 303 miles per day or 2,121 miles per week (greater than the distance from Riverview to Los Angeles – 1,974 miles).

• From Ash Wednesday through the Second Sunday of Lent we journeyed 1,912 miles (1,724 miles behind schedule). We REALLY. REALLY need your help to reach Jerusalem for Holy Week. The ways to earn miles have been expanded from prior years and the miles equivalents have been made more generous to help us meet the challenge.

• The original plan was to use excess miles to take side trips from the shortest route to points of religious or general interest that may provide food for thought or spark discussions.

• Because of our mileage shortage, we had to take a direct route this week as the eagle flies which took us to San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico.

The Worship Commission invites and encourages you to attend the Annual Soup Supper on March 11 from 4:00-6:00pm in the social hall. We are asking for Soup Makers, so if your last name begins with A-H please make Chicken Noodle, I-P Vegetable Soup and Q-Z Vegetable Beef. This is to be a simple meal of soup and bread — as we remember that some in our area are left hungry on a daily basis. Please bring your crockpots to the social hall anytime after 2:30pm. Suggested donation is $5/per bowl. Monies raised will be donated to New Life Rescue Mission in Detroit.

Please call or email Mason if you are bringing soup, (734) 283-1366 ext. 120 or [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you there!

Youth Ministry All during lent in the Gathering Space you will see a bulletin board with footprints. Attached to each footprint is an envelope that we are asking for a donation to help alleviate the total cost of $11,229 for the pilgrims. There is space on each footprint to write your prayers or petitions. We will be taking these with us to include in our daily prayers and hold them up for blessing by Pope Francis during the Vigil Mass. We are hoping that all of you will take a footprint to fill out even if you cannot donate. You can return the envelope with your footprint/donation in the offering basket at mass. If you are writing a check make it out to St. Cyprian and put Youth Ministry in the memo space.

Thank you to those who have donated. We appreciate it very much. Please keep us in your prayers as we will keep you in ours.

God Bless you today and always, Stacey, Sydney and Sierra

Book Club Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom In his most stunning novel yet, the voice of Music narrates the tale of its most beloved disciple, young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town. At nine years old, Frankie is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings.

But Frankie’s talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS.

Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realizes, through his music, he can actually affect people’s futures — with one string turning blue whenever a life is altered.

At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later, does he reappear — just before his spectacular death — to change one last life.

Why it’s a great group read: Frankie Presto is a fascinating character to discuss: Is he like a fictional Elvis? Which real-life artists did he bring to mind? There is plenty to discuss in any Mitch Albom novel, and here he proves that to be true once again.

The Riverview Library will have copies of this book available. Just talked to the front desk and let them know you are from the St. Cyprian Book Club.

We will meet at 7pm on Wednesday, March 28.

Red Cross Blood Drive St. Cyprian will host the Red Cross Blood Drive on Sunday, March 18th. By sacrificing our own blood, we can bring new life to others. Give blood and save a life this Lenten season!

The drive will take place from 8 am to 2 pm in the Social Hall. You can sign-up online as you have in the past or in the gathering space before and after all masses this weekend.

The Red Cross is now offering RapidPass. RapidPass allows you to start the blood donation process from the comfort of your home and save time at the donation site. The process is simple, just visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass, read the information and complete the questions online, then print your RapidPass and bring it with you or show it on your mobile device. This way you don’t have to read the booklet and answer the questions at the donation site so the process can flow more smoothly. The RapidPass must be done the day of the drive. So give it a try!

Bread for the World On March 11th at our Soup event, please stop by the Christian Service table to write or sign an Offering of Letters. The Offering of Letters is one opportunity for Christians to live out this commitment. It invites us to be good stewards, using our voices to encourage our elected representatives to take the necessary steps to end hunger.

As God’s hands and feet in the world, we work toward a beloved community in which every person has an equal opportunity to thrive

Easter Pork Roasts If you are interested in donating a pork roast for our pantry clients, please bring the pork roast to the parish office any time during office hours before March 21st. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Tales for Tots

sponsored by

Riverview Knights of Columbus Council 13980

March is “Reading Month!”

Please join the Riverview Knights of Columbus and their families as we celebrate “Reading Month” with our new “Tales For Tots” program. During the month of March, we will be collecting NEW and GENTLY USED children’s books to encourage kids to read and stress the importance of reading to them. Fact #1 – Children in low income families are less likely to own their own books and are read to less often at home as a result. Fact #2 – The more types of reading material there are in the home, the higher students are in reading proficiency. Fact #3 – Students who do more reading at home are better readers and have higher scores in other subjects.

Today’s children are tomorrow’s future….

we can help.

Your generous donations will be given to children’s charities, homeless shelters, health facilities,

and local teachers and students throughout the area.

Donations will be collected in the gathering space St. Cyprian Catholic Church, Riverview at weekend masses March 3 – 25, 2018

“The more that you read, the more things you will

know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss

Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, March 6th at 6:00pm. Our special theme for this meeting

is St. Patrick’s Day. Get out your green and get into the spirit! We will be enjoying Irish favorites during hospitality. Our speaker for the evening is attorney Kimberly Grover. Ms. Grover has an office in Allen Park, and focuses her practice on family law, estate planning and probate. She will be discussing comprehensive estate plans, including wills, Lady Bird deeds, trusts and powers of attorney, as well as guardianships and conservatorship. On Saturday, April 21st, the Council of Catholic Women/AD will be holding its 2018 Biennial Assembly “Women of Faith, Women of Action”. The event begins at 10:00am with Archbishop Allen Vigneron celebrating mass here at St. Cyprian, followed by the conference and lunch reception at Crystal Gardens in Southgate. Fr. Bill Promesso and Patty Merlo, M.P.M are the featured speakers. Tickets are $30 per person. Contact Beverly Nicholson at 734-654-3353, or register online at www.ccw-aod.weebly.com. As always, we are collecting items for basket raffles, pennies for the Penny Pot, new greeting cards, and items for the food pantry.

Third Sunday of Lent PAGE 5 March 4, 2018

Stewardship Thoughts Today’s First Reading from the Book of Exodus recalls God’s giving of the Ten Commandments to the ancient Israelites, who passed them down through the generations to us. Following these instructions leads to a path of holiness. The Scripture readings from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthian community and St. John’s Gospel both express the people’s need for signs or miracles to believe in Christ. However, faith based only on signs and miracles does not last. Only after Christ rises from the dead do His disciples believe what He taught. As Christian stewards seeking ongoing discipleship in the Lord, we must believe in the essential elements of our faith: Christ’s life, death, Resurrection, Ascension, and sending of the Holy Spirit. Unity with Him in the Holy Eucharist strengthens our faith. Make time every Sunday to attend Mass and receive Holy Communion — the “source and summit” of our Catholic faith.
