It’s hard to believe that another term in Rang a hAon has come to a close. The weeks have flown by in a flurry of activity and there is no doubt that the children deserve every chocolate egg that comes their way this Easter! The highlights of this term included an exploration of weather and spring-time – the children were scientists as they made rain gauges to monitor rainfall and artists as they made rain-makers! We investigated the parts of an egg and used vinegar to make ‘naked eggs’! We went on a spring walk to spot signs of spring in the neighbourhood and spent a lovely morning identifying blossoms and birds on the Scilly Walk. We learned new poses in our yoga lessons, new steps in our dancing lessons and we started orienteering!I was so impressed by the children’s independence and ever-increasing organisational skills during Literacy Lift Off. The experience gave the children an opportunity to develop their fluency and word/sentence level skills as well as oral language skills and we loved welcoming Ms. O Regan and Ms. McCarthy to our classroom.

We celebrated St. Brigid’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter in style in Rang a hAon and the children delighted with songs, poems and beautiful art-work for each. Most recently, we learned all about Australia in our class. Once again, the children’s enthusiasm, energy and commitment to learning was overwhelming and we had the most wonderful time in the classroom exploring the Great Barrier Reef, Aboriginal culture and art, its wildlife, landscape and music. We created an ‘Australian Corner’ in our classroom that the children filled with boomerangs, coral, coins, independent project work, didgeridoos and storybooks about Australia. We welcomed Ruairí’s dad to our room where he regaled the children with stories from his childhood and pictures of the wildlife there and the children had the opportunity to experience learning in a new way.We made some wonderful memories this term and we are looking forward to summer term and all the new adventures ahead. Go dtí sin, beannachtaí na Cásca oraibh go léir ó Rang a hAon!

It has been a very eventful and busy term for 2nd class. After all their preparation and hard work the boys and girls received their First Confession on the 13th of March last. It was a lovely evening for the children, parents and teachers involved and one that will be remembered. We are now looking forward to the First Holy Communion in May which will be another special day for the children. We have also been busy reading! We have spent the last few weeks taking part in the Shared Reading Programme running in the school. Rang á 2 have really got involved in this and have enjoyed reading a variety of books both in class and at home. We also started our class novel ‘The Butterfly Lion’. This has proved to

be a big hit with 2nd class and we have enjoyed writing letters, diary entries and producing some beautiful African art work based on the book. We really enjoyed Seachtain na Gaeilge this year. Rang á 2 put together a wonderful play ‘Na Trí Mhuicín’ especially for the occasion. The children should be very proud of themselves as the play was performed completely trí Gaeilge. The children really enjoyed performing in front of different classes throughout the school. ‘Shéid sé is shéid sé ach níor leag sé an teach brící!’We all look forward to the next term and hope everyone has a relaxing and peaceful Easter. Cáisc shona daoibh!

Our second term got off to an active start with rugby sessions with Finbarr and hurling coaching with Anthony. We are now looking forward to starting swimming lessons on April 5th.In February, Rang a 3 researched World War 1 using our school iPads. We also enjoyed reading the story War Game, based on a historic football match that took place on Christmas Day 1914. Many thanks to Jerry who brought in one of the gift tins that the soldiers received from Princess Mary on that day.

During the term, we marked Friendship Week and Catholic Schools Week. It was lovely to share some stories about our grandparents. We learned about the work of engineers, constructed models and worked with Rang a 5 who helped us with the electrical circuits for our traffic lights during Engineers Week.

Bhain Rang a 3 an-taitneamh as Seachtain na Gaeilge agus ghléas siad suas don cluiche ‘Cé Mise?’ Bhí siad ar fheabhas ag caint as Gaeilge. Beatha teanga í a labhairt!

We have been enjoying shared reading, including celebrating World Book Day on March 3rd. Well done to everyone for taking part and dressing up. Let’s keep up the reading!David, Tess, Maeve and Kali represented Rang a 3 in the choir that sang in Cork Opera House on St. Patrick’s Day. Pupils are currently busy rehearsing their medley of songs with Ruth for the Cor Fhéile on April 3rd.

After a busy second term, we are really looking forward to our Easter break. Cáisc Shona daoibh go léir!

This second term has been in full swing with the Naíonáin Bheaga. Our classroom is currently a Pet Shop and we have lots of pets on display – from gigantic giraffes, cute little kittens, our popular puppies to the mischievous mice. Some children even brought in their own pets from home to say hello. We are learning the importance of caring for a pet in the home – that a pet is for life and not just for Christmas!

The children have been learning about the work of the Gardaí and the doctor. We set up our own Garda Station in the classroom, where each day the gardaí were taking fingerprints, writing up notes, chasing robbers, patrolling the classroom, scrutinising evidence. Garda Colin came to visit us. We set up Summercove Doctor’s Surgery and took on the roles of patient, doctor, nurse and receptionist. We

learned how to use a stethoscope, a thermometer, we read x-rays and checked blood pressure. We had a visit from Liam’s dad, Dr. Healy and Hugh’s Dad, Dave who is a Paramedic. We loved practicing Yoga during this term and we all agree that it

was great fun. We were practicing different yoga poses such as dog pose, cat pose, frog pose and crocodile pose.

We are looking forward to our Easter egg hunt which we know we’ll enjoy. Hopefully we’ll get lots

of chocolate eggs because we really have been so good…

Beannachtaí na Cásca oraibh.

Naíonáin Bheaga - Ms. O’Flynn

We have been extremely busy in Naíonáin Mhóra this term. The children are making huge strides in literacy, as a result of avid reading of library books both independently and with shared reading of more difficult texts together with parents at home.

To celebrate the beginning of Spring, we enjoyed a March walkabout along the Scilly walk, and as the weather was perfectly Spring-y, we saw loads of signs of the new season.

The children continue to improve their Irish dancing, and recently also enjoyed a block of yoga with our guest teacher, Véronique, who taught us lots of great yoga poses and stretches through entertaining stories and rhymes.

During Seachtain na Gaeilge, we played ‘Suas an Dréimire, Síos an Nathair’ with the pupils from Rang a Trí, and we celebrated Friendship Week by chatting about what makes a good friend. Finally, we pledged to be ‘Friendship Superheroes’ to each other in our school.

We marked World Book Day with some fun activities in class -everyone looked great in our costumes and we were all very amused by the various characters that took shape in our classroom that day! As always, spectacular art work was produced in our room - we have been doing loads of work in printmaking. The children have been so surprised to discover that fantastic art can be created from such simple things as vegetables, tin foil and bubble wrap!

Naíonáin Mhóra - Mrs. Brunicardi

Dia daoibh,As the year has progressed we have looked for new initiatives to introduce to the school and are delighted that the teachers have been so appreciative in working with us to make this school a happy and joyful place. We have been working hard and are proud to say that we

have fulfilled our goals to get bike racks and a new set of school jerseys. We were proud to present cheques to the value of €200 to Refugee Education Chios (for a school for refugees in the Greek islands) and the Rainbow Club for children with autism. Goalposts have been ordered for those sunny days in the field and we

are sure that they will be enjoyed by all pupils. We look forward to our final term in primary school and hope to bring more exciting ideas to our wonderful school!
