Vietnam TripWelcome back to the 17 girls, Dorothy Brown and Tui
Elliott who have just returned from a highly successful
trip to Vietnam. The girls were able to learn much about
the history, the geography and the rapid development
of this country, as well as undergoing much personal
growth. Trip leader, Tui Elliott, commented “They all
got into using local phrases, interacting with locals,
especially the children, and generally were interested
in learning more about the French colonisation and war,
the American war and the early Communist structures
set up in the country after reunification…The girls
were fantastic….co-operative, caring, looking after
each other. They gained confidence in learning how to
manage travelling in an unfamiliar place, were always
back on time and gave speeches of thanks when called
upon. And they were full of fun!”. Our thanks to Tui and
Dorothy for providing this wonderful experience for the
girls. See page 5 for photos.
Number One Girls’ Rowing School in New Zealand!!It was indeed a very special Maadi Cup this year and
for my first one as a “Novie” Principal to see Rangi
win the Executive Trophy awarded for Top Sweep Oar
School in New Zealand, as well as the title of the Top
Girls’ School, was just the most incredible experience.
There was certainly lots of cheering back at School as
staff were tuned to live streaming, and with winning
three gold medals and three silver medals there was
lots of celebrating on the dais and back at school.
Congratulations to all of the Rowing crews, the coaching
team ably led by Mark Cotham, and special thanks
to Peter and Susan McLeod who were the backbone
behind a successful parents’ group with hospitality
and support of our coaches. I would also like to thank
Maaka Kahukuranui who willingly brought the Kapa
From the Principal Haka team down to perform at our evening function.
The girls’ performance was outstanding as was their
pride in their School; they were a real credit to Rangi
Ruru and created a wonderful sense of occasion.
Results were:
Gold: U16 eight, U18 Novice eight, U15 eight
Silver: U17 four, U16 four, U15 four
Fourth: Lightweight four, Novice four
Fifth: U18 eight
Seventh: Lightweight double scull, U15 octuple
Eighth: Lightweight four, number 2 crew
New Zealand Secondary Schools' OrchestraI had the pleasure of attending the New Zealand
Secondary Schools' Orchestra performance in the April
term break and was absolutely enthralled at the level
of musicianship that was evident. Rangi was strongly
represented with fifteen musicians selected which was
a record number for the School. Congratulations also
goes to the following music scholars – violinist Grace
McKenzie, cellist Karen Hu and flautist Isabella Gregory,
on gaining selection for the NZSO National Youth
Orchestra. This is the second year for Grace. Members
of this orchestra are aged 25 years and under, with the
majority being tertiary level/semi-professional players
so it is indeed a huge achievement for our girls to be
part of this. I wish them the best for their upcoming
concerts.
Visit to Yokohama, JapanOn Friday 6 May I have been invited to travel to Japan
to visit our sister school Yokohama Jogakuin. This is a
wonderful opportunity to continue to develop the strong
association that we have had with Yokohama Jogakuin
over the last 23 years. They visit us every year bringing
around 90 students to spend time at Rangi. Tania
Morgan and Stephanie Barnett will also be travelling
with me.

From the Deputy PrincipalSenior Dance Head of Community, Brittany
O’Rourke, and her Dance
Committee are preparing for the
much anticipated Senior Dance on Saturday 11 June.

and the dance concludes at midnight.
This year the venue is the Rydges Hotel, Latimer Square,

not necessitate great expense on outfits or cosmetic
treatments – the emphasis is on creativity and
enjoyment.
More detailed information about this event and the
procedures and protocols surrounding it will be sent out
to parents and partners.
Year 11 Semi-Formal The Year 11 Semi-Formal will be held on Saturday
18 June at Hagley Oval Pavilion from 7.30pm - 11.30pm.
We ask your support in seeing this as a low-cost and fun
evening. With the emphasis on enjoyment, and feeling
comfortable in your own skin, we discourage spending
large amounts of money on expensive outfits and beauty
treatments. Please assist us with this message.
Girls must fulfil all sporting and other commitments on
these Saturdays.
A photographer will be in attendance at both events and
photos will be available for viewing online.

Masterclasses let Girls Bring their Horses to SchoolAround 12 girls, including a number from a variety of Christchurch girl’s schools, got up close to a horse at Rangi Ruru last term.
It’s the first time the school has run such an event which encourages Rangi Ruru students to bring a friend from another school to learn more about the Rangi equestrian programme.
Girls learnt from Rangi parent Sally Field-Dodgson about the art of turning out a horse to 'display it to maxiumum advantage. See more at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJgdcHKFVl0
