Savitribai Phule Pune University was one of the universities in India to recognize that academic training in Communication means much more than Mass Communication in general and Journalism in particular. Department of Media and Communication Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University was established in July 1990 to serve this need. DMCS offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. Media and Communication Studies and M.Sc. Media and Communication Studies as a part of the Science faculty. DMCS has identi ed Video Production and Media Research as its strength areas and over the years, the course has also incorporated emerging areas in the of mass communication, interpersonal and organizational communication.

This constant endeavour to tune in to the demands of the ever-changing media industry and maintain high academic standards has earned DMCS the reputation of ofCommunication Studies in the India. Savitribai Phule Pune University has been given the highest Five Star status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC) for its overall performance. It has also been as having 'Potential for Excellence' by University Grants Commission (UGC) - the apex body for higher education in India. DMCS strives to uphold this legacy of the University in letter and in spirit. Media Research includes study of the theories and critical methods necessary to conduct research. Students pursue research in several fields in media such as content analysis, audience reception, advertising and corporate communications among others. Potential employers include research agencies, advertising firms and media planners, instructional designers and content developers.

Video Production focuses on intensive hands-on training including direction, research, scripting, editing, camera work and sound production. The students will be equipped to work in the areas of film, television and independent production houses. Potential employers include filmmakers, television production houses, non-governmental organiza-tions, educational & research institutions.

M. Sc. Media and Communication Studies at DMCS, Savitribai Phule Pune University is a two-year full time programme that offers two specializations - Media Research and Video Production

Admission Process:Admission to the Masters' programme is given on the basis of an entrance examination. This exam is generally conducted in the last week of June and the notification for the same is announced in the university and the department's website, and Facebook page from the last week of April every year. DMCS admits 47 students per year. The University rules and regulations about reservations and quotas are followed while admitting them. There are 13 more seats for the NRI/ Foreign students category, admissions for which are channelized through International Students Center (ISC), Savitribai Phule Pune University.

Admission Process:Admission to the Post Graduate Diploma programme is given on the basis of an entrance examination. This exam is generally conducted in the last week of June and the notification for the same is announced in the university and the department's website, and Facebook page from the last week of April every year. DMCS admits 25 students including foreign students per year for students for the Indian Film Studies course. The course is self-funded and reservation quota rules are not applied for the fees of the programme.

Offered in collaboration with the National Film Archive of India, Pune, the Post Graduate Diploma in Indian Film Studies is a one-year full time flexible programme of study. It provides students with opportunities to study various areas of film theory, cinema history and culture, and research techniques. It also equips students with practical knowledge in archiving, exclusively in the setting of Indian Cinemas.

The Indian Film Studies programme aims to provide students with tools to look at classic and contemporary cinema with marketing and distribution strategies. The course engages with sociology of cinema in terms of politics of identity, gender, and film music.

The admissions for M. Phil. and Ph.D. courses are centralized as per the rules of Savitribai Phule Pune University. The announcement for the courses is made on the websites of the University as well as the Department.

Duration of M. Phil course is maximum 3 semesters i.e. 18 months, coinciding with academic calendar of the university. It includes course work and dissertation. Course work is completed in the first semester, followed by a dissertation within the maximum permissible period of one year. Course work for students admitted into M. Phil./Ph.D. programme carries a total of 16 credits. It includes a combination of lectures, tutorials, presentation of seminar papers, book reviews, class room tests and participation in discussions of work in progress.

For both courses listed above, students who have earned a Bachelor's degree in any discipline (Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Law, etc.) from a recognized university are eligible to apply. Students who have appeared for final year degree examination and awaiting results can also apply.
