TIOBE Index for December 2014

December Headline: R and Swift candidate languagesof the year

There are two candidates for the TIOBE programming language of the year award that will be announced

around the 1st of January 2015 These are statistical language ! "#1$%&' and (pple)s new *wift language

"#10+&' (part from these, also Ja-a*cript and .art ha-e a chance to win The award is gi-en to the

language with the highest increase in ratings in 201/ isual Basic has the highest delta but it doesn)t ualify

for the award because it has been introduced as a split off of the general Basic entry

The TIOBE rogramming 3ommunity inde4 is an indicator of the popularity of programming languages The

inde4 is updated once a month The ratings are based on the number of silled engineers world6wide, courses

and third party -endors opular search engines such as 7oogle, Bing, 8ahoo9, :iipedia, (ma;on, 8ouTube

and Baidu are used to calculate the ratings It is important to note that the TIOBE inde4 is not about

the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code ha-e been written

The inde4 can be used to chec whether your programming sills are still up to date or to mae a strategic

decision about what programming language should be adopted when starting to build a new software system

Q: I wold li#e to have the complete data set of the TIOBE index$ Is this possible!

(L :e spent a lot of effort to obtain all the data and eep the TIOBE inde4 up to date In order to

compensate a bit for this, we as a fee of 5,000 *P for the complete data set The data set runs from

June 2001 till today It started with 25 languages bac in 2001, and now measures more than 150

languages once a month The data are a-ailabe in comma separated format lease

(L :ell, you can do it either way and both are wrong If you tae the sum, then you get the

intersection twice If you tae the ma4, then you miss the difference :hich one to chooseQ *uppose

somebody comes up with a new search term that is 10& of the original If you tae the ma4, nothing

changes If you tae the sum then the ratings will rise 10& *o taing the sum will be an incenti-e for

some to come up with all inds of obscure terms for a language That)s why we decided to tae the

ma4

The proper way to sol-e this is is of course to tae the sum and subtract the intersection This will gi-e

rise to an e4plosion of e4tra ueries that must be performed *uppose a language has a grouping of

15 terms, then you ha-e to perform $2,<+% ueries "all combinations of intersections' *o this seems

not possible either If somebody has a solution for this, please let us now

(L Ao, we did not change our methodology at that time 7oogle changed its methodology They

performed a general sweep action to get rid of all inds of web sites that had been pushed up (s a

conseuence, there was a huge drop for languages such as Ja-a and 3## In order to minimi;e such

fluctuations in the future, we added two more search engines "F*A and 8ahoo' a few months after

this incident

(L irst of all, 8ouTube counts for less than 10& of all ratings, so it has hardly any influence on the

inde4 8ouTube has been added as an e4periment It ualified for the TIOBE inde4 because of its high

raning on (le4a 8ouTube is a young platform "so an indicator for popularity' and there are uite

some lectures, presentations, programming tips and language introductions a-ailable on 8ouTube
