PAGE 2 RAPID NEWS – OCTOBER 2011

First p ub lished in 1995, BS EN 545 is well estab lished as the p roduc tspe c ifica tion for duc tile iron po tab le wa ter pipe line systems within the wa ter

industry. European standards are reviewed regularly to ensure that they

rema in in touc h with tec hnic al improvements and this stand ard ha s rec ently

been revised and published (31st October 2010) following a 3 year work

programme.

The ne w standard inc ludes the m ost rad ica l cha nge since the first

publication with the replacement of thickness (K) classes by the more

logical and practical pressure (C) classification. Although there were some

other amendments to the standard they were more to reflect the reality of

current supply from most manufacturers, e.g. the minimum coating

thickness wa s increased to 200 mg/ m2.

BS EN 545: 2010

Saint-Goba in PAM UK beg an p rep arat ions for the transition to the ne w

standard in 2010, to make sure that the transition from a customer’s point of

view will be as sea mless as possible.

As from now, we will start to deliver pipes marked to the new standard (see

below ) as stoc ks with the p revious ma rkings a re run dow n.

Som e c od es will cha nge and we will keep yo u informed of these through

Rapid News, your local contact (see back page) and updates to your

electronic schedules.

You c an still order on the existing c od es and we will ca rry out the substitution

throug h our SAP system.

Roll-out Programme for the new Standard

Pressure c lasses are a

more log ica l wa y of

expressing a pipe’s

p ressure ca pability – c an

anyo ne spo ntane ously

give the working pressure

of a DN 600 K9 pipe?

Previously, p ipe s and fittings were c lassified in K c lasses (e.g. K9), ca lcu lated

from an emp iric al formula b ased ma inly on m anufa c turing c onstraints at the

time of the first p ub lica tion in 1995. This resulted in p ipes with p ressure

capabilities far in excess of their intended usage especially at smaller

diameters. For example, a DN 150 flexibly jointed pipe of K9 minimum

thickness wa s ra ted a t 79 ba r working p ressure w hich, with a safe ty fac tor of

3, mea ns an ac tua l failure p ressure in the reg ion of 235 ba r – far in excess of

normal network operating pressures! Even in the larger diameters, say DN

1200, the ac tua l failure p ressure was in excess of 110 ba r.

With the advent of improved manufacturing techniques and substantial

investment in comp uter co ntrolled tec hnology, it is now po ssible to produc e

homogeneous ductile iron pipe consistently to more realistic thicknesses

ap propriate to their use.

The new standard EN 545:2010 ad op ts the language of users and c lassifies

pipes and fittings by pressure classes, i.e. according to their pressure

c ap ab ility. The old K c lasses will disappe ar as they w ill no long er confo rm

eithe r to EN 545:2010 or the ISO 2531:2009 sta ndard, a s used outside Europe.

Pressure Classes

F

D.S

.R20.ePFA

PFA = working pressure in bars

emin is the minimum pipe wallthickness, in mm

Rm is the minimum tensile strengthof ductile iron (= 420 MPa)

D is the mean pipe diameter, in mm

SF is a safety factor of 3

The maximum PFA of a pipe isequal to its class number, e.g. PFA40 bar for a class 40 pipe

‘Preferred’ Pressure Cla sses

EN 545: 2010 de fines de fa ult p ressure c lasses by d iam eter. These

are referred to in the standard as ‘preferred pressure classes:

DN 40 to 300 – Cla ss 40 = 40 bar PFA (working pressure)

DN 350 to 600 – Class 30 = 30 bar PFA

DN 700 to 2000 – Class 25 = 25 bar PFA

These pressures still reta in a sa fety fa c to r of 3 (the highe st o f a ny

pipe material). Other pressure classes are available, with

provision to tailor-make a pressure class to suit a specific project

or ap plica tion, e.g. PAM Universal anc hored pipe s.

Pipe MarkingsPipes conforming to the new stand ard w ill be m arked with both

ISO 2531 and EN 545 (the two sta ndards are now we ll a ligned to

a llow c onfo rmity to b oth) and t he p ressure c lass. This is a c ha nge

to the previous ma rking where e ither EN 545 or ISO 2531 would

be marked and the rating was not marked, unless it was not

Class 40 (uti 400mm) or K9 (>450mm ). This cha ng e in marking

protocol will help you identify pipes conforming to the new

standard

Are Pressures Classes Applied to Fittings?

EN 545: 2010 doe s c lassify soc keted fitting s in p ressure c lasses but

the classes were selected to match the existing performance

under the o ld K class reg ime. Therefore, no c hang es to our

current offer are required in order to comply with the new

standard.

Note that the standard recognises that fittings with branches

may have a lower pressure rating than the ‘preferred’ pressure

c lass and this should b e spe c ified b y the manufac turer.

Note also that the working pressure of flanged fittings is

dete rmined by the p ressure rating of the flang e.

The Imp ac t on Self –Restrained Joints

The use o f anc hor gaskets (or any self–restrained joint) can

reduc e the PFA o f a pipe line a nd Saint-Gob ain PAM spe c ifies

the working pressure of all its self-restrained joints.

To ensure c ontinued pe rforma nce, we have mod ified the

anchor gaskets for DN 150, 200 and 250 from the first quarter of

2011, but a ll other self-restrained joints rema in the same .

Fittings are not marked

with the ir pressure c lass
