“A HIGHLY TARGETED, ERROR-FOCUSED PRACTICE PROCESS”

“IF SOMEBODY COULD BOTTLE THIS, IT WOULD BE WORTH

MILLIONS”

THE TALENT CODE

Presentation Notes
I was struck by a statement in The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown, a book by Daniel Coyle – it someone could find a process by which individuals could methodically obtain any given skill set, “it would be worth millions.” This intrigued me.

BIG, HAIRY, AUDACIOUS GOAL (BHAG)

Presentation Notes
Web-based skill transfer platform After 17 years of on-going introspection and self-education, I have chosen a Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal for myself. And that ultimate goal is to build the world’s largest evolving repository of the vast wealth of human skills, using a technology I’ve developed called the RSTP that will eventually be developed into a web-based skill transfer platform. I’ve dubbed this goal the “SkillsOpedia” Project.

THE BIG “WHY”

The RSTP allows an expert to record and transfer their expertise to a novice with 95% replicability, in 10% of the time, and 0% of the stress and anxiety for the instructor and student.

FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS

Presenter
Presentation Notes
What I decided to do was to break out my BHAG into phases of the SkillOpedia project, a venture that will likely span years, and then set my sights on reaching the next tangible, attainable milestone towards that ultimate vision. Therefore, my next next step is to test the RSTP, particularly…

PROBLEMS WITH ATTEMPTING TO GAIN PROFICIENCY IN A

PARTICULAR SKILL SETMassive Information Dump

Presenter
Presentation Notes
So what is the problem I’m trying to solve? The problem is that, currently, there is a very flawed approach to attempting to gain proficiency in a particular skill set, particularly in the transfer of a skill from an expert to novice. Typically, loosely structured raw information is dumped onto the passive student, who then has to figure out how to unravel all the information, restructure it for their particular circumstances and skill level, and then attempt to master the skill set through a trial and error approach.

PROBLEMS WITH ATTEMPTING TO GAIN PROFICIENCY IN A

PARTICULAR SKILL SETSkill segments that must be mastered

Unconscious capacity for competence of skill segments

Conscious Attention Capacity Bottleneck

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Another problem with attempting to gain proficiency in a given skill set, is that the student is left trying to figure out how to organize all the information dumped out by the expert and then attempt to push that information through the narrow capacity bottleneck of their conscious attention, into their unconscious competence

THEREFORE… THIS ABOUT SUMS UP CURRENTTYPICAL SKILL ACQUISITION PRACTICES

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In other words, we continue to ignore the fact that we’re trying to cram a rather large camel through the itti bitti eye of a needle. Fresh attempts to do so are not netting us any appreciable improvements in acquisition of personally relevant skill sets and it’s generally assumed that improvements in this arena are not possible.

SOLUTION

Presenter
Presentation Notes
My solution is to create a guided skill transfer platform and app/program that the individual can use on a smart phone, tablet or computer to learn any given skill set.

AHH, A TIDY SOLUTION…Skill segments that must be mastered

Unconscious capacity for competence of skill segments

Conscious Attention Capacity Bottleneck

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You can’t make the eye of the needle bigger, you have to shrink the camel You have to drive individual building blocks of the skill set sequentially, one at time, through the limited bottleneck of an individual’s conscious attention into their unconscious competence, and then sequentially aggregate those pieces into larger and more complex skill units until the full skill set has been realized
