the expansion of rapid transit in Vaughan continues

York Region Rapid Transit Corporation is connecting east and west—from Yonge Street to Helen Street. VivaNext is committed to designing and delivering an exceptional rapid transit system that will provide faster, more reliable and congestion-free trips, help shape growth in our communities, and connect York Region’s urban centres.

The vivaNext rapidway in Vaughan is more than just a transit project. It also includes urban design elements such as wide, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, attractive landscaping and bicycle lanes for the whole community to enjoy. Throughout construction, we keep everyone informed and minimize disruptions as much as possible for those who live, work, play—and commute in Vaughan.

In this booklet, we answer the most common questions and highlight construction activities planned for the summer in Vaughan.

The 8.6 kilometre Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension [TYSSE] is advancing and is on track to its scheduled opening in December 2017.

The latest updates for station completion progress are as follows:

• Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station. . . . . . . . . . . . 83% complete

• Highway 407 Station. . . . . . . 79% complete

• Pioneer Village Station . . . . 85% complete

• York University Station. . . . . 63% complete

• Finch West Station . . . . . . . . 81% complete

• Downsview Park Station . . . 87% complete

Construction of the rapidway vivastation on Highway 7 that directly connects to the subway—called the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre-Spadina Subway Station—is now underway. The unique design has a longer, wider roof and platform. Customers and pedestrians will be able to make connections to Viva at street level and access the subway and bus terminal through a fully-accessible underground pedestrian concourse.

Residents and visitors alike will enjoy the mixed-use, transit-oriented development offered in the VMC area. Anchored around a tree-lined street, it will include a variety of shops, services, recreational facilities, entertainment venues and more. It will be a great place to work, shop or relax, and getting there will be easy whether you walk, ride your bike, or take transit.

TYSSE and VMC update

frequently asked questions

what is bus rapid transit?

Bus rapid transit provides frequent service on dedicated lanes using buses, which allow more flexibility than rail-based rapid transit services. Also, it provides a high level of service and is both faster and less costly to build.

why does York Region need rapid transit?

With over 1 million residents, York Region is the fastest growing and most desired municipality to live in within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area [GTHA]. More and more people are coming to York Region every day, to live, to work and to shop and the population is expected to exceed 1.5 million people by 2031.

This growth will bring with it many benefits, including more choices for housing, employment and recreation—but it also means our roads are getting increasingly congested. World-wide experience shows that the top priority to reduce traffic congestion is to have a great rapid transit network in place, making it easier for people to get around.

what are rapidways?

Rapidways are dedicated lanes in the centre of the road for Viva vehicles only. Stations will be placed every kilometre or so, with passenger access located at signalized intersections. Rapidways will allow Viva vehicles to zip past congested traffic. In response to emergencies, police, fire and ambulance vehicles will be permitted to use the rapidways and cross the median at designated intervals.

how will traffic patterns change?

Rapidways will change how motorists access properties and streets between intersections. Drivers will make safe, easy left turns and u-turns using the dedicated left-turn signals at the intersections. With our design, there will still be the same number of lanes for traffic, plus the rapidways will run down the centre of the road for Viva vehicles.

what is the impact of removing mid-block left turns?

Traffic studies show that making turns using left and u-turn lanes at signalized intersections are safer and easier than making left turns mid-block.

will pedestrians be able to easily cross the street?

Well-marked crossings, combined with audible signals, will help make it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross at signalized intersections. Crossing can be done in two stages if required, with a safe median waiting area.

how many riders are expected to use the Viva network?

Ridership on Viva has grown over 38% since it was launched in 2005. With the new rapidway and projected economic and population growth, ridership growth is expected to continue.

how will the rapidway construction impact the environment?

Our biologists and foresters will help to minimize impacts to plants, animals and their habitats during construction. Also, tree planting along the boulevards will help create a more attractive place for you to enjoy.

will there be bike lanes along the rapid transit corridors?

Bike lanes identified in The Regional Cycling Master Plan will be constructed along the rapid transit corridors. They will have distinct markings to separate them from vehicle traffic. Cyclists will also have a designated marked area at signalized intersections that provides a safe area for them to wait until the light changes.
