“COCUYOS” es el nombre que recibe la luciérnaga del Caribe y es la palabra que  la artista Raquel Cohen ha elegido para referirse a su obra.

"COCUYOS", is the generic name that the artist RC has chosen for her work and it comes from the Caribbean Spanish for fireflies or lightening bugs.

Los cocuyos de Raquel – asteroides, laberintos, discos solares, palos santos y barcas- nos hablan del origen de la vida y de la conveniencia de conectarnos con nuestro  interior para percibir lo esencial, es decir, la belleza, la  bondad, la generosidad, la sabiduría y la armonía del espíritu. Esculturas de formas orgánico- cósmicas hechas con maderas, telas metálicas, cobres y mangueras revestidas. Estructuras de

ricas texturas y al tiempo delicadas formas y colores que se iluminan al llegar la noche.

Raquel's  COCUYOS, asteroids, labyrinths, solar discs, Amazonian vines, vessels, speak of the origins of life and of the inner contemplation which allows us to perceive the essential: beauty, goodness,

generosity, wisdom and harmony of the spiritSculptures of organic/cosmic forms made from a mixed medium of metals, wire screens, copper and materials that allow for the passage of light and its

emanation into the surrounding space. Structures of rich textures and delicate forms and colors during the day, who, as night falls, transform into light beings.

Alegre, espontánea y entusiasta, Raquel es una de esas personas que disfruta de la vida y sobretodo, de sus

momentos más sencillos: una taza de té, un atardecer, un paseo o una conversación entre amigos son instantes que esta artista convierte en luz.  Un espíritu inquieto y ávido

de saber que desde muy joven sintió la necesidad de recorrer el mundo para conectar con otros seres y culturas.

Formada en el Art Institut of Chicago y en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Boston, abandonó su tierra natal para viajar

por Sudamérica, África, Asia y finalmente afincarse en España. Primero fue Barcelona, donde la panorámica de la

ciudad iluminada por la noche, sus destellos y brillos vistos desde la casa-estudio de Vallvidriera, fueron su inspiración. Desde hace un tiempo reside en Asturias, en su pequeño y

amado Niao,  donde sigue trabajando para hablarnos del poder de la luz, de su simbolismo, significado y capacidad

para transformarnos.

Joyful, spontaneous, and enthusiastic, Raquel is the kind of person who enjoys life to the fullest and above all in the most essential moments: a shared cup of tea, an afternoon stroll and an intimate conversation between friends, these are the treasures that this artist converts into light.Of an inquisitive spirit, avid of adventure and knowledge, she was drawn at any early age to travel far and wide to  experience other cultures as her real education. Born in Chicago and trained at The Art Institute of Chicago and Boston University School of Fine Arts, she left her native country and art education to  travel in Africa, Asia, and South America, and finally settling in Spain. For many years she lived in Barcelona, in Vallvidrera, upon the mountain overlooking the city whose nightly spectacle of jeweled light became her source of inspiration. A few years ago, she moved to a village in Asturias, her tiny and beloved Niao where she continues to work and speak to us of the power of light, its symbolism, meaning and capacity to transform us.

El lenguaje artístico de  Raquel se gesta en  el conocimiento y  profundo respeto por  culturas y tradiciones milenarias y

se alimenta con el poso de las vivencias de la artista.  Fundamental, esencial e inherente es también la

naturaleza. Los cuatro elementos: tierra, aire, fuego y agua están presentes en su obra.  Los ríos, las nubes, los bosques,

las rocas, el sol, el cielo….son fuente de inspiración y la energía que nutre y habita en Raquel y en sus entes

escultóricos de materia y luz.

Raquel's artistic language is conceived in the profound respect for traditions and cultures of past milleniums and

nourished by the artist's own pool of personal experience.Nature is here fundamental, inherent and

essential. The four elements: earth, water, air and fire are present in her work. Rivers, clouds, forests, stones, the sun, the sky....all form part of her inspiration and the energy that

nourishes and inhabits her beings of matter and light.
