The manor house on the site of Twyford Abbey can be traced back to the 13th century. By 1593 Twyford Abbey was the only inhabited house in West Twyford, with a small private chapel.

In 1806, the manor house was sold to Thomas Willan, a stagecoach proprietor who employed architect William Atkinson to replace the moated manor house with a Gothic-style castellated Abbey and Walled Garden.

The Abbey, was purchased by the Alexian Brotherhood, a Roman Catholic order in 1902, who ran it as a convalescent home and later as a nursing home.

Twyford Abbey and the walled garden were individually Grade 11 listed in the 1970’s and have been vacant since 1988.

Demolition of the existing dairy and stables building to provide a 73,948 sq ft linear building at the northern end of the site.

The building will comprise six blocks. The two 4 storey blocks will bookend the remaining three storey blocks.

The building will provide the majority of the general teaching accommodation, specialist art, design technology, IT and science spaces and main school library.
