The potato story – from the Incas to ‘Old Fritz’

Potatoes come from South America. The Incas grew them in the Andes Mountains of what is now Peru at altitudes of 3,000 – 4,000 metres, where maize would not flourish.

The Spaniards brought the potato to Europe in the 16th century – but at first it didn’t oc-cur to anyone to eat them; they were cultivated for their lovely white and purple blooms in the gardens of botanists and the aristocracy.

Potatoes arrived in Germany in the 17th century. Their popularity is largely thanks to the Prussian King Friedrich the Great, who in 1756 issued the ‘Potato Decree’ compelling every farmer to plant potatoes or face punishment.

Friedrich, so the story goes, also employed a ruse to promote potato cultivation; he had the potato fields guarded by soldiers. “Whatever needs guarding must be valuable,” thought the farmers, stole a few potatoes from the King’s fields … and found that when the tuber were properly cooked, that is, boiled, tasted really good.

And so the cultivation of this German staple food gradually established itself.

In 2001 two of the oldest established butchers in the Hannover region, Gramann and Ahr-berg, merged to continue a 100-year tradition; today Gramann-Ahrberg still gets its pork from around Hannover. These trusted farms keep their animals on straw and bring them to the butcher’s just like they did a century ago. Gramann-Ahrberg prepares the pork to old family recipes, and one can taste the tradition and dedication in all their sausages and fresh meat.
