Ravenna School District Annual Library

Report 2015-2016 Mr. Petrosino

Ravenna School District

Annual Library Report

2015-2016

Mr. Nicholas Petrosino

Coordinator of Library Media Services

6/3/2016

This annual report provides a brief overview of Ravenna School District’s

libraries. The document provides an inside look at each school library in regard to collection analysis, circulation statistics, library events, patron usage, value of the library, etc. This report is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather retrospective and insightful for a better understanding of the school libraries and their importance. Each school library report features a look at the services provided and the patrons served as well as library management activities and special events. A collection analysis for each school library is presented in order to show the age of the collection, the number of items owned, and the percentage in regard to overall library collection. The report is limited to these chosen characteristics as it would be virtually impossible to ever fully report on the multitude of activities, happenings, inner-workings, etc. of an active, functioning school library. The libraries within Ravenna School District are a vital aspect in the overall education and future success of our student population. Our libraries serve our staff, students, and community in a variety of ways as we strive for excellence in each building. As this report will show, we are continuously aiming to improve our services by upgrading the collection, continuing to be the hub of school activity, and focusing on student growth and achievement.

The report features each school library in the following order:

1. Ravenna High School 2. Brown Middle School 3. Carlin Elementary 4. West Main Elementary 5. Willyard Elementary 6. West Park Elementary

Please consider remedying this oversight.

➢ Bulletin Boards & Showcases: o Changed hall bulletin monthly! o Decorated the library for the different seasons. o Decorate the hall with the work the students do in the library.

CONCERNS: I have expressed to Mr. Petrosino throughout the school year of not having enough time with going to West Park and all my extra duties, that I don’t have time to shelf my books weekly, put new books into the system, repair books and do all my paperwork! I would like to continue to read to the students and plan activities that time would allow. Maybe West Park could be a half of a day and it would allow for them to have library and me to get my home schools work done.

West Main Elementary Annual Library Report

2015-2016 Mrs. Heidi Kovach, Library Aide

PATRONS SERVED ● 555 students ● 26 faculty members

SERVICES PROVIDED

➢ Circulation: 9714 checkouts in 2015-16 ➢ Collection:

o 3703 Nonfiction books 23 Magazines 263 AV items o 7077 Fiction books 56 EBooks

➢ Library Management Activities: The year began with a complete reorganization of

all sections of the library; putting books in the correct order and weeding nonfiction along the way. Discarding leveled readers and distributing them to appropriate classes. This whole process took 3 of us the better part of any free time during the first nine weeks of school. Throughout the year, I maintained the organization of sections. A new book area was created for the students to check out books new to the library. A display was created for emerging readers going from picture books to beginning chapter books, this made it easier for the students to make their own choices and see a variety available.

➢ Special Events: We started this year with a book fair in November which earned

4000.00 in sales, giving us roughly 2000.00 in profit. During the winter some classes made snowflakes to create a “blizzard of books”. February/March brought us another book fair, which was offered during conference nights; this fair had a sales total of 4150.00. The week before spring break we had a bookmark contest; each class had a winner who chose a poster. We ended the school year with a special BOGO book fair that concluded with our carnival night. We had a total of over 11,000.00 in sales with roughly 50%of that coming back to us in Scholastic dollars, which are being used for new library books and classroom materials for teachers.

➢ Bulletin Boards & Showcases: The library maintained the two hall bulletin boards

and created new, fresh decor for inside the library. The new look helps students create a renewed interest in reading.

➢ Library Anecdotes: This year I started to show 3 students how to shelve books. We

started by recognizing the different sections and organizing the return cart to make shelving easier. One of my 5th grade girls did write me a note to tell me that shelving books was more fun than reading them. The two remaining students will be 4th graders and will learn more about shelving this year so they can continue to help in the library.

CONCERNS: My concerns remain the same as I have expressed throughout the school year. I struggle with my heavy schedule; the issue of not having a day without students where I can repair, do paperwork, shelve and enter books creates a balancing act for me. I would like to have the time to do these tasks properly and also maintain the order of the library by periodically checking sections for misplaced books or weeding old copies. With a half day at West Park and a half day without kids on Fridays, that simply does not give me enough time to properly keep tasks done. I find that I have to let some tasks go to complete others which creates a catch up routine for me. I don’t want to give up my time reading to students to keep my side work caught up. If the schedule could be changed to eliminate my time at West Park or my repeating classes on Fridays could be re-routed, I could get my work done properly. I understand there are budget constraints and we are all trying to do what we can when and where we can, but my schedule is heavy and may not be distributed fairly compared to the whole district.

Willyard Elementary Annual Library Report

2015-2016 Mrs. Sandy Bennett, Library Aide

PATRONS SERVED

● 345 students ● 30 staff

SERVICES PROVIDED

➢ Circulation: 6149 books checked out 2015-16 ➢ Collection:

o 5823 books in library o 3473 Fiction o 2350 Non-fiction o 25 audio

➢ Library Management Activities: Weeded out approximately 80-90 books and

magazines, Moved out desks and non-working computers to make more room in the 1st and 2nd grade reading area.

➢ Special Events: Hosted 2 Usborne book fairs and one Scholastic book fair,

Author Michelle Nelson-Schmidt the author of The What if Monster and Bob is a Unicorn along with several other children’s books came to Willyard and talked to children, Hosted a Poem month having the children write and submit their poem into the Young Poet contest

➢ Bulletin Boards & Showcases: changed the bulletin board monthly

CONCERNS: The computers are very slow and unresponsive at times making it hard to check books in and out which in turn can at times make it difficult to get the books out to the students and also causing errors of books not getting checked in correctly along with the library printers being old and outdated which makes it hard to get the new books on the shelves for the students to check out, it's almost impossible to run off labels on the main office printer and also risky with labels getting stuck when printing causing costly service calls.

West Park Elementary Annual Library Report

2015-2016

Mrs. Sandy Bennett, Library Aide Mrs. Heidi Kovach, Library Aide

Mrs. Connie O’Donnell, Library Aide Mrs. Debra Paolucci, Library Aide

PATRONS SERVED

● 211 students ● 27 faculty members

SERVICES PROVIDED

➢ Circulation: 3437 total checkouts 2015-16 ➢ Collection:

o 2876 Fiction books o 1097 Non-fiction books o 156 Audio Visual resources

➢ Library Management Activities:

o Added new books from Junior Library Guild and Book Fairs. o Added tables and chairs to the library

➢ Special Events: 3 Scholastic Book Fairs

CONCERNS: The West Park Library Aide schedule is not ideal for the library aides, nor is it ideal for their “home” buildings. West Park Elementary would be better served by a full-time library aide rather than the current situation of a different library aide being there 4 out of 5 days a week. If a full-time library aide is not feasible, I suggest condensing the library classroom schedule. Schedule the library classes for either the afternoon or the morning so the library aides need only be present for half a day. Most duties will still be covered at West Park and the library aides would get more time in their home building for shelving, cataloging, processing, planning, running reports, decorating, book repairs, etc. as needed.
